Family Weekend at SUNY Oswego
Oswego, NY — With many Oswego students coming to Oswego from different parts of New York and other states, events like Friends and Family Weekend are a good way for residents to have their home come to them, and for their families to see their home away from home.
As a celebrated tradition at SUNY Oswego, students are able to reunite with loved ones, and show them what the Oswego community has to offer.
For some students, it is an exciting way to show their family the accomplishments they’ve made so far. Students Anyissel Hernandez and Breanna Walker have done exactly that.
“I really miss them so when they come here I feel like supported and everything. Like it’s just nice to see them, hang out with them, just to see how I’m doing,” said Hernandez.
As for the family and friends, it’s a good way to see how their student has settled in to SUNY Oswego, as well as becoming familiar with the campus and town.
One family, the Minor, Callender, and Hechanova family, a blended family from New York City were excited to see some Oswego favorites.
“We checked out the lake, the barbershop, yeah. Walmart,” said the family.
One of the activities for the weekend, the Oswego Men’s Hockey Exhibition Game against Nazareth.
“Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes, we are going to check the hockey game out,” the family said.
A two-decade tradition, Friends and Family Weekend opens up opportunities not only for students, but for those who are unfamiliar with the town of Oswego.
Between learning about Oswego staples and the exciting hockey games, for one weekend, the Oswego communities grows just a little bit bigger.

Women’s basketball sneaks past Hamilton
The Oswego Women’s basketball team improved to 3-0 after a thrilling 76-72 non-conference victory over Hamilton. Heather Hebert scored the go-ahead layup for Oswego with 52 seconds remaining in the game. Jenn Robbins had a team high 21 points on the evening. Hebert finished with 20 points and 9 rebounds for the Lakers.

Non-Conference Battles Continue for Lakers
The Oswego State men’s and women’s ice hockey teams continue with the non-conference portions of their schedules this weekend, playing two games apiece.
The women’s team travels to Vermont for the Doubletree Ice Hockey Classic, hosted by Saint Michael’s College. Seeing their first action of 2015, Oswego’s women ride in on a 5 game win streak stretching back to November 21st. Sophomore Brianna Rice and a trio of dynamic freshmen, Olivia Ellis, Andrea Noss, and Rachel Lenard will lead the offense for Oswego, who face a Plymouth State team that gives up more than four and a half goals per game. The Lakers will face the Panthers Friday at 4 pm, and the host Purple Knights at 4 pm on Saturday. Both games are only available through Live Stats. WTOP Sports will also be updating Twitter throughout the games.
The men’s team is home for a rare Friday/Sunday pair of games, first hosting Hobart of the ECAC West, and then lining up against Southern New Hampshire University. The Hobart Statesmen present potentially the biggest upset threat for Lakers in their non-conference schedule, coming in with an 8-4 record and big wins against Brockport and Utica, who both drew against the Lakers earlier in the season. On Sunday afternoon the SNHU Penmen come to town. Sitting at 5-7 overall SNHU has dropped three contests against SUNYAC opponents, most recently a 7-1 decision to Fredonia on Tuesday, January 6th. They will face Morrisville before coming to the Marano Campus Center. WTOP will have full Hockey Night In Oswego coverage of the men’s games, with pregame starting 15 minutes before puckdrop.
