OSWEGO, NY— Last Wednesday, a man named Saint Jesse Morrell unexpectedly visited the quads delivering his religious opinion. For roughly 20 minutes he was aggressively yelling to students his ideas of the LGBT community, targeting their lifestyle, calling it a sin. The students didn’t agree with what he was saying, retallying back in an argument until the police showed up. Since he did not have a free speech permit from the school, he was asked to leave.
“He has freedom of speech,” Oswego student Sarah Novak said after he targeting her and her girlfriend. “So we also have freedom of speech, so we choose to kiss and fight hate with love”

Keynote Speaker: Ferial Govashiri

Oswego, NY- A former personal aide to President Barack Obama will be visiting Oswego State this Friday. Ferial Govishiri will be the keynote speaker of the Student Leadership Conference. Her speech will center around finding and focusing on one’s passion in life.
Govashiri was born in Iran and immigrated to the United States with her family when she was six months old.
This Friday, a very special event as well as exciting opportunity will be taking place here at SUNY Oswego. Former personal aide to President Barack Obama and active member of the Iranian American Women Foundation Ferial Govashiri will be speaking on campus at the auditorium in Marano Campus Center around 7:30pm. She’ll be holding the position of keynote speaker which is being put on by the division of student affairs and enrollment management. Her talk will be free and opened to the public, in other words a perfect way spend a Friday evening to kick of the weekend.
Now a fact about Govashiri some may not know is that she was actually born in Iran
Of course as most are aware, President Trump has recently issued a temporary travel ban on refugees and citizens from seven Muslim majority countries including Govashiri’s home country of Iran.

Fruit Valley Orchards-Family Fun For All!
Local family owned orchard closes after a great crop season but continues to sell their delicious apples throughout the winter to the public and to SUNY Oswego as well. Not only do they sell apples but they also sell vibrant red cherries. Along with selling to the public and SUNY Oswego Fruit Valley Orchards also picks and produces apples for popular apple-based products brand Motts.
Although the Orchard has been around for many years it has recently been under new ownership for the Gfeller family from Northern Virginia. Owner and farmer Craig Gfeller said that he came to upstate New York to raise his family on a farm much like he did in Rochester. They purchased the land last July in 2017 and have been roaring ever since.
They’ve been able to rake in tons of families to their beautiful orchard with their U-pick program, when asked what family friendly activities they offer at the orchard Craig responded with “We offer a lot of activities here, mostly just U-pick right now,we have families that come and have picnics here, just a great way of spending the afternoon as a family.”
The crop season has been a little short this year due to the fact that not much rain had been around Oswego in the early fall months. However the orchard was still able to grow a great crop under the conditions they had. They grew and sold some of the same apples like Macintosh but also sold new apples to the orchard like Snap Dragon bred by Cornell University where Craig is an alum from.

New York: The First Tuition Free State in the Nation

OSWEGO, NY- – On April 8th, Governor Cuomo announced that all public 2 and 4 year universities in the state of New York will offer a tuition free scholarship. The Excelsior Scholarship will allow middle class families, who qualify, to be exempt from paying for college tuition.
In order to qualify, a family’s adjusted gross income must be under $100,000 in 2017. By 2018 that number will go up to $110,000, and by 2019 the amount will increase to $125,000. These incomes will include all student, parent, or spouse incomes within the family.
Students must be enrolled full-time, already have 30 college credits, and continue to complete 30 credits per year, which includes summer sessions, while in college. Transfer students will be eligible if they, or once, they’ve met the 30 credit requirement. If the student loses the scholarship, for now, they will be unable to regain it, though there is an appeal process being put in place.
Once students who are receiving the scholarship graduate, they will be required to stay New York residents for the same amount of time they had received the scholarship in college. Christopher Britts, an education major at SUNY Oswego, is apprehensive of where the state’s getting the money to fund this and what the resident restriction entitles.
“Are my taxes or other college expenses going to go up?… Will they decrease the PELL or TAP grants we get? Because if so and I don’t qualify where does that leave me?… What if I get a job in Cali or Jersey, I have to say no? If so, I’d rather have the loans, then at least I’m free.” says Christopher.
Graduate students are not eligible for the scholarship, nor are students who have already completed an undergraduate degree and are pursuing a second.
Families will still be responsible for other expenses such as room and board, meal plans, and books, but the hope is for the Excelsior Scholarship to help relieve some of the burdens that families face in trying to pay for student’s college education. Financial aid will not be effected if a student receives the scholarship.
Christopher is also a team leader for Mentor Scholar, an after school program helping children with homework, and says this scholarship is good for younger children as well.
“Yes the scholarship needs adjustments and clarification but it really does give them a future to look forward to. Many of these kids come from low income families who before now, college was probably never an option…well now it is. As a future educator and current college student thats a beautiful thing to see.” Chris said.
This scholarship will go into effect and be available to students for the Fall 2017 semester.
