Barlow proposes lower sewer bills for some city residents

City of Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow proposed a $50 reduction to the sewer bill for flat-rate users. According to the mayor’s office, if approved, flat rate users would see their sewer bill decrease a total of $350 over the past five years.
“Further reducing the sewer bill for flat rate users is a well-deserved give-back to city residents who have paid too much in sewer fees due to the failures of previous administrations,” said Mayor Barlow, in a press release. “The work our wastewater department, economic development department, and smart budgeting and strategic thinking has allowed for two previous rate decreases and we are happy to continue that trend by further relieving residents with this proposed decrease.”
The proposed $50 reduction follows two previous annual reductions: a $200 decrease in 2019 and a $100 decrease in 2021.
Tonight at 6:30 p.m., the Administrative Services Committee will vote on the proposal at Oswego City Hall. If it passes, the Common Council will hold a full vote on Monday, September 11th.

Local Business Lookout: River’s End Bookstore
Oswego, N.Y. – Local hotspot, River’s End bookstore, is located in downtown Oswego at 19 West Bridge Street. Housing a collection of approximately 12,000 books, the store has a variety of genres and can special order books for customers, or offer online purchasing options.
All of this is an effort to provide stellar service and “to make a life time customer” according to owner Bill Reilly.
River’s End Bookstore holds Story Time on Tuesdays, collaborations with other local businesses and the campus, and book release parties. They also sell large quantity books to places like the hospital, as well as carry items like apparel, colored pencils, and greeting cards.

“Bid Bonjour” – 22nd Annual Bidding Bonanza
Oswego, NY- Dozens of Oswego students, faculty, and community members attended the 22nd annual Bidding Bonanza at Sheldon Hall last Thursday.
Bidding Bonanza, or “Bid Bon,” is an auction run by students and resident mentors in Johnson Hall’s FYRE program. This yearly event raises money for the hall’s scholarship, which current residents can apply for.
“It’s really awesome because everyone comes out.” Resident Mentor Bowden Drake-Deese said. “We work on it (basically) all of second semester. It’s the first thing we talk about when all the R.M.’s come together at the beginning of training.”
The auction consisted of various services, products, and prizes provided by generous donors. Many students and community menbers won items like gift baskets, show tickets, and autographed pictures. They were also served baguettes and macaroons served by students as a part of this year’s theme.
“We’re calling it Bid Bonjour.” Resident Mentor Cindy Pietrakowski said. “We have a little persian town over by the stage with two eifell towers.”
