Lakers Win a Thriller Against Blue Devils
The Oswego State men’s basketball team defeated Fredonia on Saturday in thrilling fashion by a score of 76-73. With the win, the Lakers move to 12-11 overall and 9-7 in conference play while the Blue Devils drop to 4-19. The victory marks the first time that Oswego has had a winning record since January 6th.
Oswego’s offense started out hot as they scored the first six points of the contest. From there, it would be back and forth with Fredonia taking a three point lead into halftime. While it seemed as though the Blue Devils would pull away at times, Jamir Ferebee and the Lakers would find answers. Ferebee played a crucial role in the final quarter, hitting three key free throws to put the Lakers up by one with just under four minutes remaining. He was also able to get the assist on Tyler Pierre’s game-winning basket with less than 10 seconds in the game.
Ian Schupp led the Lakers with 25 points and was joined by Ferebee (18), Pierre (13) and Josh Ivey (10) in scoring double digits.
Oswego will face Brockport at home next Friday with tip off scheduled for 7:30 pm.

Rob Gronkowski will undergo back surgery
In the NFL, news out of Foxborough today is that the New England Patriots star tight end Rob Gronkowski will undergo back surgery this Friday.
After leaving last weekend’s game against the New York Jets and not returning, Gronkowski was diagnosed with a herniated disk in his back. This will be the third time since 2009 that Gronkowski will undergo surgery on his back for a herniated disk, with the recovery time this time expected to be approximately two months.
This isn’t the first time this year that ‘Gronk’ has been bit by the injury bug, as the 27 year old missed the beginning of the season dealing with a hamstring injury, and missed the Patriots’ game two weeks ago against the San Francisco 49ers with a punctured lung.
Gronkowski has appeared in eight games this season, only starting in six of them, but has still recorded 25 catches for 540 yards and three touchdowns this season.
Even if the Patriots were to advance to Super Bowl LI, the game is scheduled for February 5th; meaning Gronkowski’s season is likely over, barring a New England playoff run.

Lakers Come Up Short Against Hawks
The Oswego State field hockey team lost to New Paltz by a final score of 5-3 on Friday afternoon as their losing streak moved to four games. After the defeat, the Lakers drop to 5-7 on the season and 2-3 in the SUNYAC while the Hawks improve to 5-9 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
In the first half of the contest, New Paltz dominated on both sides of the ball with their leading scorer, Justine O’Reilly, putting them on the board first and outstanding play from their goalie, Megan Gangwere. The Hawks went into halftime with a 3-0 lead but then Oswego found a spark from Katie Reynolds. With commotion going on near the net, Reynolds somehow found Kathleen Little to give the Lakers their first goal. Just over a minute later, the junior earned her second assist after getting the ball to Monica Harvey for another score on a penalty corner. After scoring a goal that put Oswego within one, Reynolds finished her day with four points and has a team-leading total of 22 for the season. Just as the Lakers seemed that they would complete the comeback, New Paltz’s O’Reilly put the game away with her second goal coming in the 67th minute.
Oswego will look to keep their SUNYAC playoff chances alive, today on Senior Day, against Oneonta at 1:00 at Laker Turf Stadium.
