Filmmaker and Environmental activist to headline 11th annual Global Awareness Conference

OSWEGO, N.Y.– Fulbright Scholar and TED fellow Shalini Kantayya, a filmmaker and eco-activist will be making a free public keynote presentation at SUNY Oswego. Kantayya, whose film “Catching the Sun” was nominated for the Environmental Media Association Award for Best Documentary, has lectured at universities such as Princeton, Yale, and Stanford.
Kantayya will be presenting at The 2017 Hart Hall Global Awareness Conference. The theme this year will be “A Drop of Life – Water Crisis, Catching the Sun – Renewable Energy & Breakthrough: How Innovations Would Change the World”.
“Catching the Sun” was nominated for the 2016 Environmental Media Association Award for Best Documentary and has been translated in 35 languages.
Kantayya’s film “A Drop of Life” was used as a tool to organize for water rights in 40 villages across Africa, making a real-world impact in the lives of thousands.
The presentation will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, in Sheldon Hall ballroom for the 11th annual Hart Hall Global Awareness Conference.

New Year, New Set
Big things in store for the spring semester as improvements keep coming for the WTOP-10 TV studio
After all the talk about the new equipment that came along with our recent HD upgrade, e-board and management now prepare for a whole new look in front of the camera. It’s out with the old and in with the new for our studio’s set!
Before leaving for winter break, the old set pieces were either torn down and discarded, or saved and put in the engineering closet for possible future use
With wires all across the news desk and old set pieces around, clean out and clean up will continue for Vice President of Productions, Ian Dwyer ‘17 and Vice President of Engineering Nick Costanzo ‘18 for the remainder of winter break.
Rochester based company Uniset will be delivering the set’s pieces, while Dwyer and Costanzo will be installing them. The new set will allow for a lot of customizability; with panels that are interchangeable and wheels that it can move around on. This means that news, original productions, and sports original productions will be able to tailor the set based on the format of their show. Along with new panels, comes a new desk. There will be four different table tops that are easy to change and adjust based on each show’s needs and wants.

“I think this new set is going to really allow WTOP to grow and allow each show to express themselves and the theme of their show even more”, Vice President of Productions, Ian Dwyer ‘17 says.
Dwyer and Costanzo hope to have the set fully built by the end of January 2017 before students arrive back on campus for the semester.

Lakers Suffer Loss Against Fredonia
The Oswego State women’s basketball team fell to Fredonia on Saturday by a score of 66-50. With the loss, the Lakers drop to 7-16 overall and 4-12 in conference play while the Blue Devils improve to 9-15 on the season.
The two teams appeared to be evenly matched as they ended the first quarter tied at 16. Fredonia’s Jenna Einick changed that as she was able to dominate against Oswego’s weak defense, scoring 16 points in the first half. She would finish with a game high 25 points. As a team, the Blue Devils shot 59.3% from the field during that span.
Oswego was able to cut the deficit to single digits at times in the second half but Fredonia had the answers. This was largely in part to their ability to score off turnovers as they outscored the Lakers 26-8. Oswego finished the game with 19 turnovers while Fredonia finished with 15.
Courtney Ameele (17) was one of three Lakers that scored in double digits along with Rachael Windhausen (11) and Erin Gantley (10).
Oswego will look to end their two game skid next weekend when they host Brockport at Max Ziel Gymnasium. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30.
