OSWEGO, N.Y. — The trees are changing color, pumpkin spice is back, and Halloween is right around the corner. Students at SUNY Oswego shared their excitement with Reporter William Corsi.
Of the 27 people who were polled about their plans for Halloween, 19 of them said they were going to dress up for Halloween and 16 of them said they will be going out to get candy and celebrating with friends.
Student Marina Pantoliano said that she likes Halloween is one of the only holidays where people really get into it besides Christmas.
Some students said certain aspects of halloween make them feel uncomfortable.
“People running around in masks kind of creeps me out,” Student Dalton Bisson said.
Halloween takes place on Tuesday this year.

Travel Ban Response

Oswego, NY – Oswego State President Deborah Stanley sent students and faculty members an email on Sunday morning in response to President Donald Trump’s recent executive order banning travel into the United States from seven Muslim majority countries including Iraq, Syria, and Iran for 90 days.
The ban affects both non-immigrants and immigrants as well as those with a student or scholar visa. Green card holders were originally affected by the ban. However, according the New York Times, that decision has been reversed.
“There is considerable uncertainty about its implications,” Stanley wrote. “We advise great caution on the part of our international students, faculty and staff to consider carefully any travel outside the country or consider deferring travel until there is more clarity about how the Executive Order will affect us.”
Oswego State does not have a study abroad or international education program in any of the seven countries. Stanley advises those who are from any of those countries and are either planning to travel or are currently outside of the United States to seek the advice of an immigration lawyer before making travel plans.
“SUNY Oswego has always been a welcome and hospitable home for international students and visitors since our founding over 150 years ago,” she wrote. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to international students, scholars and programs for the creativity, intellectual rigor and cultural diversity you bring to our campus.”
According to the New York Times, a federal judge partially blocked Trump’s ban on refugees and other foreign nationals who were being held at U.S. airports on Saturday night. Protests against the ban continue across the country.

Relay For Life
Oswego, NY – SUNY Oswego is putting on their 10th annual Relay for Life event on April 6th from 6pm to 2am. Coordinator, Tina Cooper, tells us all about the event.
“Historically it has been a event that goes from an evening to a morning. It is representing the change over from dusk to dawn. Talking about throughout the night, relating it back to a person enduring cancer throughout their journey and throughout their fight.” Relay for Life Coordinator Tina Cooper said.
Senior, Riley Synan, has been involved in Relay for Life for 12 years, she shares with us her inspiration to why she continues to help this organization.
“Both my grandparents died of different types of cancer and my mom also got diagnosed with cancer when I was in high school so, we made a team for her after that.” Synan said.
Coordinator Tina Cooper encourages students to come out and get involved in SUNY Oswego’s Relay for Life event.
“Come to this and see what your campus is about and see what it is like to actually be involved on campus with a whole ton of people your age that care about the same thing.” Cooper said.

Lakers Earn Shutout in Season Opener
The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team defeated New England College 5-0 in their season opener on Friday.
Early in the first period, freshman Katie Mlostek made her presence known as she tallied her first career goal to put the Lakers on the board. Just under a minute later, yet another Laker scored their first career goal as Monica Cramer scored on the power play after being assisted by Kate Randazzo. Cramer would finish the game with two goals and an assist while Randazzo tallied four assists. However, the highlight of the contest came off the stick of Oswego State’s captain, Olivia Ellis, who was able to weave through three defenders for a backhanded goal.
Mariah Madrigal earned the shutout for the Lakers to go along with seven saves. On the offensive side of the puck, Oswego State outshot New England College 58 to 7.
The Lakers will look to continue their momentum when they take on Castleton during their Teal Game today at 3:00 pm.
