Oswego State men’s hockey splits weekend in Buffalo

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team went on the road this past weekend to finish the regular season. The Lakers finish the 2021-22 season with an overall record of 17-6-1 and a conference record of 12-3-1. Oswego State fell to SUNY Fredonia Friday night with a final score of 4-5 but bounced back on Saturday with a shutout victory against Buffalo State. The 3-0 win secured second place in the SUNYAC standings and gives the group a home playoff game in the semifinals round.

On Friday, Oswego State traveled past Buffalo down Interstate 90 to faceoff against the Blue Devils of SUNY Fredonia. The Fredonia squad was red hot coming into the matchup after beating the number one team in the conference, SUNY Geneseo, in a middle of the week contest. The Blue Devils would get the first two before forward Tommy Cahill got the first Oswego State goal on the powerplay in the second period. He would have another in the final stanza of the game to continue his points streak. Jackson Arcan would snag an even strength goal in the beginning of the third period to get the Lakers closer to the Blue Devils. Oswego State would score two in the final three minutes but were unable to find the tying goal before time expired. Steven Kozikowski would get pulled and Eric Green would finish the game between the pipes for the Lakers.

The following evening, Green would get the start in net for Oswego State. The team would shutout the Bengals on their alumni night. The 3-0 victory would feature goals from forwards Travis Broughman, Alex DiCarlo, and Rocco Andreacchi. The Lakerds scored two powerplay goals in the final minute to put the game away. The Bengals were able to keep the game at 1-0 for most of the contest thanks to netminding and solid defense.

Oswego State men’s hockey will take a week off prior to their Wednesday night contest against the highest remaining seed after the quarter-finals. The Lakers will host a semifinal game on Wednesday, March 2nd on home ice in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. The quarterfinal round of the SUNYAC playoffs will be played this Saturday. WTOP 10 will have coverage thirty minutes prior to puck drop next Wednesday as the Lakers chase another conference championship. Lakers hockey is back in action

For all of the hockey fans in Oswego County, your months-long wait is finally at it’s end. Laker hockey returns this weekend with exhibition games for both the men’s and women’s programs. on Saturday the women’s team faces the Toronto Midget Arrows and are looking to improve upon last year’s successful regular season that saw them knocked out of the ECAC West Championship chase in the first round.

The men might have an even more bitter taste in their mouth after last season which they’ll begin to cure on Saturday against the CCHL all-graduate team. They went 21-6-1 en route to the first overall seed in the conference…only to lose at home to Plattsburgh in the SUNYAC Championship. From there they went on to get knocked out of the NCAA tournament in the first round by Hamilton. The games start at 3 and 7 p.m. respectively.

Non-Conference Battles Continue for Lakers

The Oswego State men’s and women’s ice hockey teams continue with the non-conference portions of their schedules this weekend, playing two games apiece.

The women’s team travels to Vermont for the Doubletree Ice Hockey Classic, hosted by Saint Michael’s College. Seeing their first action of 2015, Oswego’s women ride in on a 5 game win streak stretching back to November 21st. Sophomore Brianna Rice and a trio of dynamic freshmen, Olivia Ellis, Andrea Noss, and Rachel Lenard will lead the offense for Oswego, who face a Plymouth State team that gives up more than four and a half goals per game. The Lakers will face the Panthers Friday at 4 pm, and the host Purple Knights at 4 pm on Saturday. Both games are only available through Live Stats. WTOP Sports will also be updating Twitter throughout the games.

The men’s team is home for a rare Friday/Sunday pair of games, first hosting Hobart of the ECAC West, and then lining up against Southern New Hampshire University. The Hobart Statesmen present potentially the biggest upset threat for Lakers in their non-conference schedule, coming in with an 8-4 record and big wins against Brockport and Utica, who both drew against the Lakers earlier in the season. On Sunday afternoon the SNHU Penmen come to town. Sitting at 5-7 overall SNHU has dropped three contests against SUNYAC opponents, most recently a 7-1 decision to Fredonia on Tuesday, January 6th. They will face Morrisville before coming to the Marano Campus Center. WTOP will have full Hockey Night In Oswego coverage of the men’s games, with pregame starting 15 minutes before puckdrop. Senior Night for Oswego Men’s Hockey

Tonight marks the final game for two Oswego seniors, Captain David Titanic and Assistant Captain Kyle Badham.

Following a loss to Geneseo Friday night, the Lakers will also look to bounce back against Brockport, as well as honoring their seniors.

Titanic has led the Lakers through an adverse year, with 24 new faces on the roster. While Kyle Badham has been battling injuries during the season, and was shortly sidelined twice yesterday during a physical matchup.

During their four year careers at Oswego Titanic has achieved 25 goals and 19 assists for 44 points. While his Assistant Captain Badham has 6 goals and 14 assists for 20 career points.

The Lakers look to improve on their SUNYAC standings after Buffalo State moved within one point of Oswego after tying Fredonia Friday night.
