OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s hockey team’s season came to a head on Saturday night. The squads finished one and two in the SUNYAC regular season standings, and were playing for the fourth time this season. The Lakers were leading the series 2-1, but the second win over the Cardinals didn’t count for SUNYAC standings as it was in a winter break tournament.

It took just two minutes for the Cardinals to find the back of the net. Plattsburgh’s Adam Tretowicz stole the puck from an Oswego defender, skated across the face of the goal, and buried it in the top left corner. From there it was a very back on forth first period, and also a very physical one. Plenty of big hits across the middle and against the boards, some of which resulted in penalties. The first penalty of the period was a goalie interference call against Connor Sleeth who checked Plattsburgh goalie Eli Shiller who was out of his goal. The second penalty was against Ryan Dickinson for elbowing, both penalties were killed by the Lakers. Plattsburgh Jacob Modry took a cross checking penalty with less than a minute left in the period. Another two penalties against the Cardinals were called during the period. Shiller made another six saves in that period, while the Schell had seven.

In the third period, the Cardinals took another early penalty, but once again killed it. Both teams weren’t effective on power. play in the game, Plattsburgh being 0-3, Oswego going 0-4. The Lakers were the most productive in the third period, with 15 shots on goal, more than doubling their shots output, from 12 to 27 total in the game. Despite that it was Plattsburgh that doubled their advantage with less than four minutes in the game. The Lakers didn’t go down with out a fight though and with less than a minute a slap shot from Tommy Cahill finally go the Lakers on the board. From there they pulled Cal Schell, but couldn’t get another in the net. Men’s Hockey headed to Whiteout pt 2, SUNYAC Final addition

OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego State Men’s hockey team had a high pressure SUNYAC semi-final on Saturday night against the Buffalo State Bengals. The Bengals were coming off a mid-week upset over Cortland, and had their starting goalie, Emil Norrman, back from injury. The two sides had just played a week prior, but without Norrman, an All-SUNYAC goalie, in net, the Lakers put seven goals in the back of the net.

The first action in the first period was a slashing call against the Lakers, giving the Bengals an early man-advantage. The Lakers killed it without allowing a shot on net. A few minutes after the end of the penalty, Tyler Flack scored his first goal of the season to give Oswego a 1-0 lead. Just seconds after the puck-drop from the last goal, Alex DiCarlo found netting behind Norrman again. The rest of the period was tame, without anymore goals or penalties. The Oswego defense was strong in the first, and Cal Schell only had four saves. Norrman had eight saves.

At the start of the second, the Lakers were started quickly. It took just 40 seconds for Oswego’s Connor Gatto to score the Lakers third goal. Throughout the rest of the period, both squads traded shots though nothing found netting. With five to go in the period the Bengals took a too-many men penalty, though the Lakers couldn’t capitalize. With just over a minute to go in the period, Drake Semrad was called for a 5-minute major for contact to the head, meaning he also missed the remainder of the game. With the Lakers up 3-0 at the end of the period, things looked bleak for the Bengals, but with just under four minutes remaining on the penalty there was still hope. Schell only had to make another four saves in the period, Norrman made 14.

To start the third, Lakers killed the major penalty, but also picked up another meaning they were 5-on-3 for about 30 seconds. The Lakers killed that one as well, while only giving up two shots throughout the entire ordeal. The Lakers spent a good portion of five minutes on a man-advantage, with the Bengals taking back-to-back penalties. Oswego got five shots off during the penalties, but couldn’t find netting. With less than four to go, Buffalo State broke the shutout, burying a slap shot. It was long before the Lakers recaptured that three-goal lead. Tommy Cahill buried one just a minute later. A late penalty against Jackson Arcan gave Buffalo State one last shot, but they didn’t take advantage and the game ended 4-1. Troy Robillard had two assists, in the game. Quinn Warmuth and Matt McQuade led the team with five shots each, while also each grabbing an assist. Cal Schell only had 15 saves in the game, Emil Norrman had 33.

Oswego moves onto the SUNYAC Championship game against rival Plattsburgh in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. The two sides have already met three times this season, twice as regular season games, once as a non-conference game. The winner of the game gets an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Puck drop is set for 7:00, in what will be a big weekend for Laker athletics.

Men’s Hockey gets revenge on Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Oswego State Men’s Hockey team took to the road Wednesday night for a revenge game with the Morrisville Mustangs. The Mustangs came to Oswego just after the Thanksgiving break for the Teddy Bear toss game and shocked the Lakers by beating them 3-1, in a game that would end up being the second loss in a three game skid. Now only three games away from the SUNYAC playoffs, every game matters for the Lakers who are looking to secure home ice advantage in the playoffs.

In what could have been a trap game for the Lakers, they showed what they were made of and it started with the games first goal halfway through the first period. Tommy Cahill found netting, with the assist coming from Daniel Colabufo. The Lakers did a good job killing penalties in the first period, killing off two. Once again, they Lakers ran into a goalie who was having a great game, at least in the first period. Morrisville’s Ryan Creenan had 21 saves in the first period, Cal Schell had seven.

The second period it seemed as thought the Lakers figured Creenan out. It took just under ten minutes for the first goal, but from there they were off to the races. The Lakers second goal came from Shane Bull, with assists credit going to Alex DiCarlo. Less than three minutes later, Jackson Arcan buried one, Tyler Flack getting an assist. The Lakers would find netting for a third time in the second period. Alex DiCarlo added to his team leading goal total, while Ryan Bunka and Connor Gatto each grabbed assists. With a 4-0 lead at the second break, Oswego looked good to win, but they weren’t done. Creenan only had seven saves in the second period, Schell had eight.

Not even four minutes into the third, the Lakers struck again. Connor Gatto grabbed his third goal of the year. Alex DiCarlo grabbed his third point of the game with the goal, Shane Bull also grabbed an assist. The middle part of the period was more tame, Oswego killed a Quinn Warmuth tripping penalty around the halfway point. Oswego took advantage of a late Morrisville penalty to put the cherry on top of the game. Jackson Arcan scored his second goal of the game, and sixth of the season. Shane Bull became the second Laker in the game to reach three points, with Ben Addison also tallying an assist. Oswego walked onto the bus with a 6-0 victory. Matt McQuade led the Lakers with four shots in the game. Schell finished with 26 games and his first shutout of the season. Creenan had 33 in the game.

The Lakers have two games left, both on the road. They take on Buffalo State Friday followed by Fredonia Saturday. With the win the Lakers reclaimed first place in the SUNYAC, one point ahead of Plattsburgh on an even number of games played. Fredonia and Buffalo State won’t be walk over games, both squads still playing for playoff spots and seeding.

Men’s hockey splits big weekend

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s hockey team had a big weekend that had implications for the final SUNYAC standings picture. A Friday night rematch with the Geneseo Knights, this time on home ice, was followed by a Saturday road game against the Brockport Golden Eagles. The best case scenario would have been taking both games, tying Plattsburgh on points with one less game played than them.

One of the most highly anticipated matches of the season for Oswego States fan was Friday’s matchup with the Knights. The Lakers had taken the first game of the season series in Geneseo, and were looking to sweep the series. Geneseo came out firing though, and quickly put the Lakers on their back foot. Nine minutes into the first period they put one past Schell. The Knights doubled their lead before the end of the period and went into the locker rooms with a 2-0 lead. Geneseo’s Matt Petizian was playing out of his mind through the entire game, in the first period alone he had 17 saves. Schell only had 6.

The Knights extent ended their lead once more in the second. In the eighth minute of the period they fired on past Schell for what was the only goal of the frame. The Lakers put themselves in a tough spot in the final minutes of the second, playing a good chunk of the final five minutes down two men. They did a good job killing off all of the penalties and went in to the break on a mini high. Petizian racked up another 13 saves in the period, while Schell had 12 of his own.

The Lakers made some good changes and took advantage of Geneseo’s sloppy play in the third frame. Matt McQuade finally got the Lakers on the board just before the halfway point of the final period of regulation. The Lakers second goal came just four minutes later, this time on the power play. Daniel Colabufo took advantage of the man-advantage to bring the Lakers within one. It was less than three minutes until the game tying goal. Again on the power play, the puck was bouncing around in a scrum in front of the goal when Connor Sleeth poked it out to a wide open Quinn WarmuthWarmuth buried it past two diving defenders, sending the fan section into raptures. The goal sent the game to OT.  At the end of regulation Matt Petizian, despite giving up the three goals, had raked up 47 to that point. Schell had 21, the total he would end the game at.

In OT, the Lakers found themselves on the man advantage, once more, but couldn’t capitalize. It was Geneseo, in even-strength play, that would get the break-away opportunity, to seal the victory 4-3. Petizian was the star of the game, 53 total saves. Oswego’s Connor Sleeth led the team with eight shots. Seven total Lakers tallied a point, but not one of them more than one point.

After the heartbreaking loss, Oswego had to regroup and head on the road to take on the Brockport Golden Eagles. It was a scoreless first period, again highlighted by the opposing goal tender. Brockport’s Nolan Egbert had 20 saves in the first period, Schell back in net had 11 of his own.

The second period was where the Lakers found their stride from the previous night. Noah Bull found the back of the net first for Oswego, just past the nine-minute mark of the period. He was followed less than two minutes later by Jackson Arcan, this time on the power-play. Brockport was going to go away easily though, they scored a short-handed goal with just over a minute to go in the frame to make it a 2-1 game.

Oswego didn’t take long to recapture the two goal lead they had. Five minutes into the third period Daniel Colabufo found netting for the second time in the weekend, again on the power-play. Oswego scored one more goal to finish the game off, Quinn Warmuth also finding the back of the net for the second time in the weekend. The final score was 4-1. The Lakers out-shot the Golden Eagles 45-32 in the contest. Trent Grimshaw and Alex DiCarlo each had two assists in the game.

After splitting the weekend, but the loss being an OT loss, the Lakers took three points and retained the second place in the SUNYAC they went into the weekend with. Only two points separate the the top three teams, with Oswego sandwiched between Plattsburgh and Geneseo. The top five SUNYAC teams all clinched playoff spots, the rest of the game are all fights for seeding for them. Oswego’s next game is a mid-week matchup with the Morrisville Mustangs, a team they lost to earlier this season, and who are fighting for the final playoff spot in the SUNYAC.

It was the second meeting between the two this season, the Lakers won the last matchup 5-4. Cortland found the scoreboard first. After a tripping call against Oswego’s Ryan Dickinson, the Red Dragons capitalized on the power play. The game remained 1-0 for a good chunk of the first period, both teams putting chances on net, but the goal tenders playing well. Oswego was next to score, tying the game. Connor Gatto was one-on-one with the goalie and made an excellent move to deke around him and have a wide open net behind for the game-tier. The Lakers then took the lead, Tommy Cahill firing one past the goalie for the 2-1 lead, but Cortland wouldn’t let it stand for long. The Red Dragons would tie it again before the end of the first, with less than a minute to go. When the first period finally ended it was 2-2. Cal Schell made seven saves, the Cortland’s goalie, Luca Durante‘s six.

Oswego did have 14 shots on goal in the period, all of them saved by DuranteSchell had another seven saves of his own, to go with the one allowed goal.

The Lakers would re-tie the game early in the third. Alex DiCarlo snuck one by Durante. The Lakers had another two power-play chances in the period that they couldn’t capitalize on, they were an abysmal 0-6 in the game on the powerplay. Men’s Hockey splits high ranked opening weekend

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State Lakers men’s hockey team took to both road and home ice this weekend for the first official games of their season. The weekend started with a Friday night trip to Geneva, NY to take on the Hobart Statesmen, followed by a Saturday night matchup in the Deb against the Elmira Soaring Eagles. The opening weekend was a real test for the Lakers as both squads they faced were ranked higher than them in the uscho preseason poll, Hobart #5 and Elmira #9.

The game started off pretty even for both the Lakers and the Statesmen as they each would get shots off on each others goalies. An early Hobart penalty gave the Lakers their first real opportunity for a goal all season, but the Statesmen killed it and only allowed a single shot on the net during the two minutes. Not even a minute later, Conor Smart would be called for hooking giving Hobart their first chance of the season and they would capitalize. Halfway through the penalty Hobart would score giving them the 1-0 lead 11 minutes into the contest. Oswego would be called for another penalty with eight minutes left, but net-minder Eric Green would save two shots and keep the Statesmen from extending their lead. Green finished the period with six saves.

Hobart came out of the gates swinging in the second half, getting four shots off in the first minute of play. It was Oswego who scored first in the period though. A Connor Sleeth face-off win would go back to Ryan Dickinson who passed the puck to Quinn Warmuth who buried the puck in the back of the net from the blue line. It was a very chippy period for both teams, each receiving three penalties, at one point, there was only a 3v3 on the ice. The Statesmen recovered from the 3v3 first and actually got themselves back to full strength 5v3, where they would score twice. The second period ended 3-1 Statesmen. Green had another 14 saves in the period.

It only took 11 seconds for Hobart to extend their lead in the final period, winning the opening face-off and quickly moving down ice to make it 4-1. The Lakers would hold them off for a while in the third, but with just under six minutes left the Statesmen struck again, extending it to 5-1. Oswego would pull one back on the power-play. Tommy Cahill scored, assisted by Matt McQuade. Hobart out-shot the Lakers in the contest 59-43 and dominated on the powerplay, scoring on 3-4 chances. Eric Green had 32 saves in the game. Connor Sleeth led the Lakers in shots with six and was 17-29 in the face-off circle.

The Lakers were back in the Deborah. F. Stanley ice arena Saturday night for their official home opener and the Teal Night Game. The Teal Night game for both the men’s and women’s teams raises awareness for Ovarian Cancer and takes donations for Ovarian Research in memory of the late Mary Gosek. For more information you go can to http://peacefulremediesoswego.com The Lakers were wearing their teal jerseys for the game against Elmira. The first goal of the game was in favor of the Lakers. A pass from Connor Sleeth back to the blue line to Shane Bull, usually a forward but was filling in on defense for the game, buried one past the goalie just before the half way mark in the first period. A little more than two minutes later the Soaring Eagles were called for holding and went a man down. In the final frame, the Lakers kept pushing the pace and scored again just under four minutes in. Tommy Cahill shot it low off the goalies blocker on a two-on-two opportunity and Daniel Colabufo took the rebound and scored for his second of the game. Men’s hockey finishes preseason 2-0

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s hockey team took to the ice of the Deborah F. Stanley Ice Arena for the second and final preseason matchup on Saturday. They took on the Carleton Place Canadiens, a junior program, from the Central Canadian Hockey League.

The first period quickly showed the difference between the two sides. Less than six minutes into the first period of play, the Lakers found the scoreboard first, freshman Matt McQuade finding the back of the net for his first unofficial goal as a Laker, as stats don’t count for these games. The assist coming from Connor Sleeth. Less than three minutes later Oswego would find the back of the net again. Garrett Clegg would steal one off of a defenseman at the Lakers offensive blue line and take it himself burying it past the goalie on for an unassisted goal. The first period ended 2-0.

In the second period the Canadiens seemed to hold their own a bit more, but that didn’t stop the Lakers from scoring. With eight minutes to go in the second period the Lakers had beautiful tic-tac-toe style goal. Trent Grimshaw carried the puck across the blue line in a three-on-two opportunity. He sent a pass across to Daniel Colabufo who quickly sent it back across net to a cutting AJ Ryan who buried the goal. The Canadiens would answer though. With three minutes remaining, a breakout chance resulted in a beautiful goal, shooting from right to left and off the bar past net-minder Cal Schell.

In the third period the Lakers turned the after burners back on. Less than four minutes into the period, Tommy Cahill won a face-off in the Lakers offensive zone and sent it back to captain Ryan Bunka who buried it through traffic for the Lakers fourth goal of the game. The Lakers fifth goal was another tic-tac-toe goal that would end with defenseman Troy Robillard deking the goalie and putting it behind him for goal number five. The Lakers sixth and final goal of the game came off the stick of Robillard once again. This time he sniped one from the blue line by his own bench, a one-timer that would go bar-down. This goal coming just nine-minutes into the third period. The Canadiens would pull one goal back before the end of the game making the final score of 6-2.

Oswego starts their regular season play starting next weekend. The Lakers head to Geneva, N.Y. on Friday night to take on the Hobart University Statesmen. Hobart was ranked #5 in the preseason poll, Oswego was ranked #13. On Saturday the Lakers have their home opener on Saturday taking on #9 Elmira university. Men’s Hockey opens preseason with win

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s hockey team took to home ice for the first time since they beat SUNY Cortland in the SUNYAC semi-final last season. A preseason matchup against the Stevenson Mustangs was an opportunity for both teams to get their legs underneath them before they start regular season play in two weeks time.

The first period saw senior Eric Green get the start in goal for the Lakers. Both sides would get shots off on net, but it would be the Mustangs who struck first in the game. Liam McCanney would send one five hole and into the back of the net for the first goal of the season with just under 11 minutes remaining. The Lakers would quickly answer though. A pass from Quinn Warmuth toward the slot, would be deflected in by Tyler Flack for the Lakers first goal with just over nine to go in the period.

The second period was a goalie battle. The Lakers would switch goalies, junior Richie Parent becoming the Lakers net minder in the second period. Parent made a few excellent saves, and showed off his stick handling abilities as a goalie. Stevenson made their goalie change halfway through the second period. All three goalies that played in the period didn’t allow a goal, and the sides went into the second intermission still tied at one.

In the third period, the Lakers gave their third goalie on the roster, new freshman recruit Cal Schell, his first opportunity wearing the green in gold on the ice. Just as Richie Parent had in the second period, he didn’t allow the Mustangs to get one past him, but the Lakers got themselves the lead. Their second goal came less than three minutes in. Coming off a faceoff, a pass went back to Quinn Warmuth in also the same spot as last time by the blue line. He again threw it into the slot, and the puck would go off the skate of Conor Smart and into the back of the net. Oswego’s final goal would come late in the third. Just as Stevenson was pulling their goalie to have a 6-5 and try and tie the game, the Lakers would have a two-on-one opportunity. New transfer Thomas Rocco would pass the puck behind the lone defender to Tyler Flack who just tapped it into the empty net for the game sealing third and final goal.

The Lakers walked away with a victory 3-1 showing good promise before the challenging season ahead. They will play one final preseason game before the start of regular season play. A matchup with Carelton Place of the CCHL on Saturday October, 22 in the Deborah F. Stanley Ice Arena.

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team announced on Sunday, April 10th the 2022-23 leadership group for the team. The Lakers will return for their 56th season in the fall and three current Lakers will be the core leadership to lead the squad into battle. Ryan Bunka will return using his extra year of eligibility due to COVID-19 to be the captain of the 2022-23 team. The defenseman from Unionville, Ontario, Canada has played three seasons for the Lakers and missed the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19 canceling the campaign. Bunka has 36 games played with 3 goals and 6 assists over the course of his career at Oswego State. The Laker finished +16 in the plus/minus column at the end of the year, the best out of any Oswego State player.

In the assistant captain roles, defenseman Troy Robillard and forward Alex DiCarlo will get the A on the jersey for next season. DiCarlo has been with the program since his freshman year back in the 2019-20 season. During his sophomore season, DiCarlo returned from the COVID-19 break and continued his dominance in the SUNYAC conference. In 26 games played, the Laker tallied 14 goals and 12 assists for 26 points. The point per game player did not miss a game this season and set career high stats in both the goal and assist column.

The other assistant captain transferred to Oswego State from the NCAA Division I program out of Anchorage, Alaska. Robillard established himself as a key addition to the defensive team after playing 23 games this past season. The defenseman finished with 4 goals and 3 assists after his first season in green and gold. One of those goals was a game winner in the Teal Night game against SUNY Cortland back during the fall semester. The junior will return for his senior year at Oswego State.

The Lakers are looking ahead to the summer months and the key part of the season, the offseason. Oswego State has one game announced so far for the 2022-23 season that is publicly known. Oswego State men’s hockey blanks Morrisville to earn fourth shutout of season

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team defeated Morrisville State 4-0 on Wednesday. This victory marks the 11th SUNYAC win for the Lakers and second win over the Mustangs in the 2021-22 season.

It was a back-and-fourth, scrappy first period that saw neither team find the back of the net. However, Oswego’s defense was stifling from the opening puck drop as they held Morrisville to just three shots in the first stanza compared to the Lakers 15. The Lakers remained relentless on the offensive end to start the second period, firing off 10 shots in the frame’s first nine minutes. Though, it wasn’t until the 13:17 mark where sophomore Connor Sleeth got things rolling for Oswego, scoring his sixth goal on the year. Ryan Bunka and Alex DiCarlo were awarded assists on the play. Just four minutes later, captain Travis Broughman put the Lakers up 2-0 as he tallied his eleventh goal of the year. To finish the period, Oswego went on to score another goal with Alex DiCarlo “one-upping” Broughman for his twelfth goal of the season. The team captain would not be upstaged for long however. As the Lakers took command in the final period, Broughman tacked on his second goal of the game, tying DiCarlo at 12 for the team lead. The Oswego defense, lead by senior Steven Kozikoski, played phenomenal all game long. The “Wizard of Koz” raked in 13 saves en route of earning his fourth shutout of the season. The team as a whole dominated the stat sheet, totaling 51 shots, 35 shots on goal and winning 36 faceoffs.

With this win, the Lakers improve to 16-5-1 on the season and currently sit atop the SUNYAC standings with 34 points. With just two regular season games remaining before SUNYAC playoffs begin on Feb. 23, Oswego will look to continue this momentum and finish the season strong. The men’s hockey team concludes the season with a weekend doubleheader against Fredonia on Feb. 18 and Buffalo State on Feb. 19. Puck-drop is set for Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Fredonia.

Oswego State men’s hockey splits weekend

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team split this past weekend in SUNYAC conference play after competing against SUNY Brockport and SUNY Geneseo. The Lakers were able to get the job done on Friday with a win on home ice against the Brockport Golden Eagles. On Saturday, Oswego State traveled to Geneseo and fell after trying to complete the comeback in the third period.

Friday evening, Oswego State welcomed the Golden Eagles of SUNY Brockport into the Marano Campus Center for Senior Night and Pride Night. The Lakers would get the job done against Brockport posting a victory by a score of 7-3 in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. Oswego State got out to an early lead in the first period with a quick goal from forward Alex DiCarlo. The Golden Eagles would respond with their own two goals to take the lead. Tyler Flack would answer for the Lakers and tie the game with an assist going to sophomore Shane Bull. Goals from Mac Lewis and Tommy Cahill finished the scoring for the Lakers in the first period. The Golden Eagles would net one more before heading into the locker room to round out the first stanza.

Over the course of the next forty minutes, the Golden Eagles would not be able to find the back of the net after a solid performance from the Oswego State defense. Cahill and Flack found the back of the net one more time prior to the end of the contest and defenseman Troy Robillard also found the twine before the completion of the game. In between the pipes for Oswego State, netminder Steven Kozikoski received the win after making a total of 24 saves and only allowing three goals against.

On Saturday, Oswego State loaded up the bus and headed down Interstate 90 to SUNY Geneseo’s campus to play against the number two team in the nation per the USCHO poll. The Lakers would fall in the contest by a score of 4-2 but played a better game against the Ice Knights compared to the contest against Geneseo back in November. Geneseo would score four unanswered goals in the first and second periods to take a commanding lead on home ice. Rocco Andreacchi found the back of the net first for Oswego State and Cahill had another goal on the weekend in the third period. Kozikoski made a total of 34 saves in the lost.

Although the Lakers split the weekend against the Rochester teams, Oswego State moved up in this week’s USCHO poll. In terms of the Pairwise rankings, the Lakers are in tenth and have a good shot at an at-large bid if necessary. In the conference standings, the Lakers are tied with Geneseo for the top spot but Geneseo has a game at hand. Oswego State has three more games left in the regular season before the SUNYAC Championship starts. This Wednesday, Oswego State will travel to Morrisville State to take on the Mustangs for a weekday SUNYAC matchup. Morrisville is currently last in the conference with a total of six points. Oswego State men’s hockey extends win streak to six games following weekend doubleheader

Oswego, N.Y.  — The Oswego State men’s hockey team improved to 14-4-1 this past weekend, defeating SUNY Cortland 5-3 on Friday and Fredonia 3-2 on Saturday. With these pair of victories, the Lakers have extended their win streak to six games and are nationally ranked for the first time this season, being named the #13 team in the most recent USCHO poll.

On Friday, the Lakers faced a familiar foe in the Cortland Red Dragons. Following an Oswego powerplay early in the first period, the Red Dragons scored their first goal to take the lead. Soon after, captain Travis Broughman scored his first goal of the evening to tie things up at one apiece. After some back-and-forth action between both teams to begin the second period, Cortland broke the tie once again at the 15:22 mark. It wouldn’t take long for the Lakers to tie things up as just two minutes later, Tommy Cahill found the back of the net, bringing the score to 2-2. Oswego would take their first lead of the evening with 10:22 left in the second period. Garrett Clegg found the twine off an assist by Mac Lewis, his second assist of the game. Though, Cortland would knot things up again just four minutes later. With the game tied 3-3 heading into the final period, the Lakers needed someone to step up to break the stalemate. Broughman, as he has done throughout much of his career at Oswego, was the guy to break things open. With 12:44 left in regulation, the team captain scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal, assisted by Alex DiCarlo and Quinn Warmuth. The Lakers defense was impenetrable through the final stretch. The Red Dragons pulled their goalie with 46 second left on the clock and with an empty net, Broughman was able to secure the hat trick, notching in his third goal of the contest.

On Saturday, the Lakers started the game off hot from the opening puck drop, scoring just 30 seconds into the first period off an Alex DiCarlo goal. Although each team continued to fire shots on net, the score remained 1-0 throughout the rest of the period. After some back-and-forth attempts in the second period, sophomore Tyler Flack opened things up for the Lakers at the 13:26 mark, using a screen to beat the Fredonia goalie for his fourth goal of the season. With seven minutes left in the period, captain Travis Broughman intercepted a Blue Devil turnover and found the back of the net to bring the score to 3-0. However, the Blue Devils responded with a goal of their own less than a minute later, using a two-on-one to beat Steven Kozikoski. To end the period, Oswego took a five-minute major for contact to the head of a Fredonia player.

The Lakers, like they’ve done all night, were able to kill the penalty efficiently. Fredonia was held to 0-3 on power plays. With 9:45 remaining in the third period, the Blue Devils scored off a clear that snuck past a Laker defenseman, bringing the deficit to just one goal. Though, a mighty defensive performance by the Lakers would hold Fredonia scoreless through the rest of regulation. With less than a minute left in the period, Oswego had a chance to score a fourth goal. However, an incredible sliding block by the Fredonia defenseman kept the game 3-2.

Travis Broughman lead the team in points with two (1 goal, 1 assist), while Steven Kozikoski continued his hot-streak as he totaled 24 saves. The Oswego State men’s hockey team will look to carry this momentum into their Senior Night and Pride Night game against SUNY Brockport. Puck drop is set for Friday at 7:00 p.m. in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. Coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. on WTOP 10!
