Softball Drops Three of Four Over the Weekend

Brockport, N.Y. – The Oswego State Softball team was on the road this weekend, heading out West for a double header against the Geneseo Knights on Friday. Then, on Saturday, they traveled out further West for another double header, this time against the Brockport Golden Eagles.

The series with Geneseo was a tough one to watch for the Lakers, as they were blanked ten to zero by the Knights in game one, then dropping game two by eight runs. Fiona Higgins got the start on the mound in both games, recording eight strikeouts in four innings. Samantha Morgan continued to shine at the plate, going 4-5 in the box, scoring two runs for the Lakers. Oswego dropped game one by a score of 10-0, then fell in game two by a score of 13-5 in ten total innings played.

Oswego rebounded to their tough day on Friday with a game one win over the Golden Eagles on Saturday. Higgins got the starting nod again and did not disappoint. in game one, Higgins threw 11 strikeouts and gave up just four hits, including a shutout win. Morgan continued to have a solid performance this weekend, going 2-4 at bat, including two RBI’s and a run scored in game one. The Lakers took game one by a score of 6-0. Game two started off promising for the Lakers, as they jumped out to a three run lead in the first three and a half innings of play. However, the Golden Eagles would shut out Oswego for the remainder of the game, and add eight runs to give them a 8-3 win over Oswego in game two. Oswego recorded just three hits at bat in game two, with Morgan leading the way yet again, going 2-3 with an RBI.

Samantha Morgan shined despite the Laker’s weekend struggles. Overall, Morgan recorded eight hits at bat, going 8-12 over the weekend. Morgan now leads the team in batting average with .337 on the season. Oswego’s tough weekend puts them with an overall record of 8-22-1, and a 3-9 SUNYAC record. The ladies will look to turn things around this weekend, with two double headers at home against Buffalo State and Fredonia.

Oswego State softball wraps up 2022 season

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State softball team finished their 2022 regular season this past weekend with 2 conference doubleheaders as SUNY Brockport and SUNY Geneseo traveled to SUNY Oswego’s campus. The Lakers were unable to find the win column this weekend and finished the campaign with an overall record of 9-26 and 4-14 in SUNYAC play. Oswego State was eliminated from post season contention as the Lakers finished 9th in the conference standings, just above SUNY Potsdam.

On Friday, the Golden Eagles of SUNY Brockport traveled into Oswego, New York to take on the Lakers in a doubleheader. Game 1 finished with a 9-4 score in favor of SUNY Brockport after the Golden Eagles score first in the top of the 3rd. Oswego State would answer with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning but the Golden Eagles ran away with the contest the rest of the way. In Game 2, Oswego State struck first in the bottom of the opening inning with 1 run. The teams would trade runs in the 2nd inning before the Lakers took a commanding lead in the 4th inning. The Golden Eagles would have a monster 5th inning with 6 runs scored to take the lead and the group never looked back from there.

The following day, the Lakers would honor their seniors in a doubleheader against the top team in the SUNYAC, the Knights from SUNY Geneseo. The Lakers were swept by the Knights as SUNY Geneseo won a close Game 1 by a score of 8-7. Oswego State would take a commanding 7-1 lead early in the contest before SUNY Geneseo reeled back in the Lakers. The contest would go to extra innings as the Knights found the winning run in the top of the 9th inning.

It would be another 1 run game in the second stretch of the doubleheader. Oswego State unfortunately were on the wrong of the score line as the Knights came away with a 6-5 win in the final game of the regular season. SUNY Geneseo would snag 4 runs over the course of a few innings to take an early lead. Oswego State would tally 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to tie the game. In the final inning, SUNY Geneseo would score 2 more runs while the Lakers could only manage to find 1 run and would fall in their last contest of the 2022 campaign.

Laker Zoe Mennig would lead the Oswego State squad at the plate for the 2nd season in a row. The senior catcher finished with a .442 batting average and 42 hits over the course of 95 at bats. Fionna Higgins followed up Mennig with a .300 batting average. Higgins was also the top pitcher in the bullpen this season with the lowest ERA which was 4.72 at the end of the season. The junior finished with a 6-8 record at the end of the season. The Oswego State softball team will return next season in the spring for the 2023 season.

Softball loses five over hard weekend matchups

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State softball team played six games over four days this weekend. A Friday double header in New Paltz against the Hawks was followed by a Saturday double header in Oneonta with the Red Dragons, the team had a day off Sunday, but played another double header at home against the Plattsburgh Cardinals Monday. 

Friday’s first game in New Paltz saw the Hawks grab an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Two two-out singles were followed by a triple, bringing that brought both runners home to open the scoring. In the bottom of the second the Hawks would strike again. A two-out double was followed by a single. A throwing error would bring home the lead runner, and another triple would bring home the other runner. No more runs would be scored until the seventh inning, where the Lakers finally found the score sheet. Two one-out singles were followed by Madison Hoeflich reaching on an error, that would score the first runner of the inning for the Lakers. Ellie Mahoney then grounded out the the Shortstop, but would bring home another run. A Samantha Morgan double brought home the third run of the inning for the Lakers, but the scoring would end there, and Oswego fell 4-3. The Lakers only had four hits on the day, no batter having more than one, and a lone walk. Freshman Maria Lutz pitched all six innings for Oswego, allowing four runs, nine hits, two walks, and striking out two.

Game two of the double header was a more convincing win for New Paltz. The Hawks scored one in the first, but Oswego would match the run the second on a Ellie Mahoney single. Errors in the bottom half of the second brought home two more runs, and a two out double in the third brought home run number four for the Hawks. The bottom of the fourth was started by a single for New Paltz which was followed by a double driving home the run. Oswego got two consecutive pop-outs after, but a single drove home the sixth run. Oswego held New Paltz scoreless in the fifth, but three runs in the sixth triggered the mercy rule, and the game ended 9-1 in favor of the Hawks. Zoe Mennig led the Lakers with two hits, and Madison Hoeflich led the Lakers with two walks. Fiona Higgins had a rough day on the mound. She allowed fifteen hits, nine runs, eight earned, and walked three, she would strike out six.

The Lakers took the two hour trip to Oneonta for the Saturday double header. The Lakers found the scoreboard in the top of the first in game one. Tai Smith led off with a walk, and she was moved to second by a sac bunt. Taylor Dubois hit a double moving Smith to third, and a fielder’s choice in the next at bat scored the run. The Lakers held the Red Dragons scoreless until the third inning, when a lead off triple would be driven in by a sac fly to tie the game. Oneonta scored once more in the fourth inning, and twice more in the fifth. In the sixth, a two out single, then stole second and was driven in by a double. Oswego wouldn’t score in the seventh, and the game ended 5-1 Oneonta. Taylor Dubois led Oswego with two hits. Tai Smith got on base three times, a hit and a team leading two walks. Maria Lutz pitched all six innings once again, allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits and no walks, striking out two.

Game two of the second double header saw Oneonta grab a big lead in the bottom of the first, scoring four. The next run wouldn’t be scored until the top of the third, when Taylor Dubois hit a lead off double and was then drive in by Zoe Mennig’s double in the next at bat. A scoreless fourth was followed by a scoreless top of the fifth, and the Red Dragons broke the scoreless streak in the bottom of the fifth, crossing the plate once. Oneonta grabbed two more in the bottom of the sixth, and the Lakers, trying to rally could only manage one in the top of the seventh, a Zoe Mennig solo shot to left, and the Red Dragons took game two, 7-2. Samantha Morgan led the Lakers, going three for three at the plate. Zoe Mennig drove in both runs for Oswego. Madison Hoeflich got the start for the Lakers, but only pitched one inning, allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits, striking out two. Chelsea Sellars pitched the remaining five innings for Oswego, allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits, and four strike outs.

The Lakers took a much needed day off Sunday, and took to the diamond for two more Monday to take on the Cardinals of Plattsburgh. The Cardinals went 1-2-3 in the top of the first, and the Lakers struck first in the bottom half. The first two batters would get out, then Taylor Dubois and Zoe Mennig would reach on errors. Fiona Higgins drove in both with a double. The second inning was scoreless, and Plattsburgh grabbed their first run in the top of the third on an error. Two more scoreless innings brought the game to the sixth, where the Cardinals struck again. The Lakers committed two errors to start the inning, allowing two runners on base. A single by the next batter loaded the bases, and another single drove in the first run of the inning, second of the game for the Cardinals. A pop out to second got out number one of the inning,  and a fly out to center got the second out, but also drove in the runner from third, for the third run of the game and the lead for Plattsburgh. Another single drove in the fourth run, and the walk that followed reloaded the bases. Another single brought home two more, and Plattsburgh got out of the inning with a 6-2 lead. Oswego wouldn’t score after the first, and lost the game. Fiona Higgins led Oswego with two hits and two RBIs. Maria Lutz pitched all seven innings, doing the whole game for the third time over the weekend. She allowed six runs, two earned, do to three errors on the Lakers. Lutz struck out four and walked three during the game

The Lakers finally turned things around in game two of the double header, and the final one of the weekend. The Lakers scored three times in the bottom of the first on hits by Zoe Mennig and Fiona Higgins. Neither team would score until Oswego did in the bottom of the fifth. Fiona Higgins drove in the fourth run for Oswego on a double, and in the next at bat, Madison Hoeflich brought in one more on a single. The Lakers scored two more in the inning on a single and a sacrifice hit, bringing their total to seven in the game. Zoe Mennig brought in one more run in the bottom of the sixth, triggering the mercy rule. Zoe Mennig went 4-4 at the plate, driving in two runs, and scoring two of her own. Fiona Higgins was the star of the day though. She went 2-3 at the plate driving in three runs, and pitched six scoreless innings, striking out six, while only allowing two hits and two walks.

The Lakers get the next three days off, until the play a double header Friday against the Brockport golden eagles at home, game one set to start at 3:00 P.M. They play their final series of the season against Geneseo at home Saturday with a double header.  The lakers now sit a 9-22 (4-10 SUNYAC). They are currently eighth in the SUNYAC, two games back of Fredonia in the six seed, the final spot in the SUNYAC playoffs.

Oswego State Softball picks up pair of wins in weekend doubleheader

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State softball team’s offense and pitching shined in their weekend doubleheader versus SUNY Potsdam. In the pair of weekend home games, the Lakers went on to defeat the Bears 13-3 in game one and 9-4 in game two. Oswego’s offense was on full display, scoring a combined 22 runs to earn their seventh and eighth wins on the year.

To begin game one, Potsdam got off to an early two-run lead only for Oswego to respond with a barrage of seven runs in the second. In that scoring run, Fiona Higgins hit a double to bring in Zoe Mennig for a run. Madison Hoeflich would then go on to hit a single to bring Higgins across home plate. Tai Smith’s double to left field brought in three more runs for the Lakers before Mennig returned the favor and brought Taylor Dubois home. Oswego continued their scoring onslaught in the third inning, putting three more runs on the board to take a 10-2 lead. Mattison Phinney, Samantha Morgan, and Smith all scored a run during that stretch. The Lakers struck again in the fourth inning after Maria Lutz brought one home and following a wild Potsdam pitch, Hoeflich ran in another one. Oswego led 13-2 heading into the fifth inning and with the large deficit, the Bears weren’t able to claw back. Although they scored a run in the fifth, the Lakers went on to win 13-3.

Game two started off much different with both teams failing to find any offense in the first inning. The Lakers would break the deadlock in the second inning after Phinney scored on a wild pitch. After both teams traded strikeouts in the third, Potsdam got on the board with two runs in the fourth inning. Oswego tied things up in the bottom of the fourth after Adriana Marini scored her first run of the afternoon. In the fifth inning, Dubois hit a double into center field to bring in Aleah Yaizzo and Smith. Following that, Mennig singled to right field and advanced Dubois for Oswego’s fifth run. Phinney closed out the inning with a single which helped Higgins and Mennig cross home plate. With the Lakers leading 7-2, Potsdam hit a two-run homer to decrease the deficit to three runs. In the bottom of the sixth, both Yaizzo and Dubois ran home to bring the game to 9-4. Oswego would hold on to their five-run lead by forcing Potsdam to a quick three-and-out, securing their second straight victory.

Oswego totaled 26 hits on the day with Higgins leading the team with six. The junior pitcher was great on the mound as well, finishing game two with 14 strikeouts. Smith continued her dominance in this series as she earned four hits and five RBI’s on the day. With Monday’s doubleheader versus SUNY Cobleskill being postponed, the next opportunity for the Lakers to continue their win-streak will be against Plattsburgh State on April 20. Game one is set for 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, with game two set to start at 3:00 p.m. at Laker Softball Field.

Oswego State softball swept by SUNY Cortland

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Lakers were defeated by the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons as the softball team could not out score the Red Dragons. Game 1 was a blow out in favor of the Red Dragons by the score of 13-1 and Game 2 was slightly closer with a score of 9-4. In Game 2, the Red Dragons were able to score six unanswered runs to come from behind and snag another SUNYAC win to improve to 4-1 in the conference. Zoe Mennig has 2 hits and 1 run in Game 2 and led the hitting squad in that contest. Fiona Higgins pitched both games for the Lakers and lead the pitching crew. Higgins had 4 strikeouts in Game 1 over the course of 3 innings.

For the Lakers, the team turns their attention to St. John Fisher College on Monday for a nonconference double header. The teams will battle at Laker Softball Field at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. Oswego State is 9-23 against the Cardinals thar represent the Empire 8 conference. The Lakers are looking to end a 7 game losing streak against the Rochester based team. WNYO will be live from the field tomorrow afternoon for the broadcast.

Oswego State softball battles in two doubleheaders

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State softball team has been busy at the start of the 2022 season. Most recently, the Lakers had four games over the course of two days. On Monday, the Lakers traveled down Interstate 90 to Western New York to take on the Blue Devils of SUNY Fredonia in a SUNYAC doubleheader. The Lakers would be swept by the Blue Devils as SUNY Fredonia defeated Oswego State by scores of 1-5 and 3-4. Game 2 featured a closer score line as the Lakers were close in getting over the hump. With one run in the 6th and 7th inning, Oswego State closed in on the Blue Devils but could not find a way to tie before the end of the contest. Fiona Higgins and Maria Lutz split time on the mound as Higgins pitched for a total of 4.1 innings. Zoe Minnig and Tia Smith both had 2 hits and 1 run over the course of the contest.

On Tuesday, the Lakers looked to bounce back in a nonconference doubleheader at Hamilton College. Oswego State would get back in the win column in game 2 as the Lakers took a 3-1 victory. The win came due to a big fourth inning which saw the Lakers snagging three runs. The Continentals got it done in game 1 in a high scoring 9-7 win for the home team.

Oswego State now sits at 5-12 overall on the season with a 1-3 conference record. The Lakers turn the ship towards SUNY Cortland as the Red Dragons will travel up Interstate 81 to take on the Lakers in another conference doubleheader. Oswego State was victorious last time these two teams met in the 2021 season. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. at Laker Softball Field as WNYO will be live with all the action.

Oswego State Softball Splits with Cortland Red Dragons

OSWEGO, N.Y. — On Tuesday, the Oswego State Softball team was able to bounce back in game two of the non-conference doubleheader to split with the Cortland Red Dragons. The Lakers were able to secure the 8-6 victory after falling in game one 5-2 to the top team in the SUNYAC East division. The team heads into their final doubleheader of the 2021 season with an 8-12 overall record and a 5-9 record in division play.

Game one started without offense till the top of the third when Cortland was able to get a run past the Oswego defense. The Lakers would answer in the bottom of the inning with their own run to keep pace with the Red Dragons. Cortland would add another in the fourth inning and pull away by the time the bottom of the 7th inning came around. Cortland was able to get five hits and two runs on pitcher Madison Hoeflich who was on the mound for the first five innings. Fiona Higgins would take over pitching duties in the sixth inning and was on the mound for three runs from the Red Dragons. Tia Smith and Higgins each had an RBI hit during the first contest. Senior Madelana Wrubel went 3-for-4 in the batting box to lead the Lakers.

Game two had a different start as both teams were able to get a run before starting the second inning. That second inning would feature multiple runs for both sides as Oswego would be able to pull ahead with six runs coming during the bottom of the inning. Senior Taylor DuBois would get a two RBI hit after Wrubel and Leah Czerwinski each hit singles to move the runners around the bases. Hoeflich would head back to the mound and pitched for over four innings which featured scoreless play from both sides. Oswego was able to come up with the victory with an insurance run being added in the bottom of the sixth inning. Czerwinski would lead the Lakers at the plate going 3-for-4 with two runs and a RBI.

The Lakers have a quick turnaround today as the group heads to Fredonia for a SUNYAC West doubleheader. This will be Oswego’s final two contests of the 2021 season after being eliminated for SUNYAC Championship contention a few weeks ago. The Blue Devils and Lakers split last time to the two teams saw each other. Fredonia took game one back on April 18th before Oswego battled back in game two. The Lakers Softball program is 23-28 all time against the Blue Devils and Oswego has nine victories in Western New York. The two teams kick off action at 3:00 p.m. for game one and will restart at tentatively 5:00 pm for game two.

Oswego State Softball Gets Set for Non-Conference Doubleheader

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Softball team has been preparing for a non-conference doubleheader against the Cortland Red Dragons. This matchup taking place Tuesday, May 4th at Laker Softball Field will be a test to see if the Lakers can extend their one game win streak. Oswego is coming off a split this past weekend with the Brockport Golden Eagles. The Lakers squad was able to bounce back in game two with a 7-6 victory this past Saturday after falling 8-1 to the Golden Eagles. Unfortunately, Oswego has been eliminated from playoff contention after posting a 5-9 conference record heading into the final week of the regular season.

Cortland makes the trip up Interstate 81 with a five game win streak and the number one seed in the SUNYAC East division in tow. The Red Dragons are 16-6 overall this season and have not seen the Lakers in exactly two years. The two teams faced off in Cortland on May 4th, 2019 with the Red Dragons shutting out the Lakers with a 7-0 victory. Oswego has only nine victories against the Cortland program with their last win coming at home back in the 2018 season. Oswego will look to break it’s four game losing streak against Cortland today at home. Game one is set to kick off at 3:00 p.m. and game two will tentatively start at 5:00 p.m. on the Laker Softball Field. WTOP 10 will be at the field to catch all the action.

Oswego State Softball Splits with Golden Eagles

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The Oswego State Softball team traveled to Brockport on Saturday eager for a doubleheader against the Golden Eagles. It was a tough go around for the Lakers this time as they split the double header (1-1) as well as the overall series this season (2-2). Brockport would take the first game in dominant fashion with a 8-1 victory and Oswego would edge the Golden Eagles in a last inning thriller with a final of 7-6. 

The first game was all Brockport with 4 runs in the 3rd inning alone and up 5-0 by the third inning. It was pretty straight forward for the Golden Eagles, generating 8 hits and putting in 8 runs in the first matchup with 2nd baseman Cameryn Duggan leading the way with 3 runs of her own. Oswego’s Taylor Dubois was the only Laker to generate a run as she hit a homerun and now has 3 on her career as a Laker. As for the second game, the Lakers jumped ahead early being up 4-0 in the second inning. The Lakers were led by Fiona Higgins and Tai Smith who each had three hits a piece in the second game. Things got extra interesting at the end of the second game as Brockport has the bases loaded with zero outs when trailing 7-5. However, Oswego was able to keep the Golden Eagles partially at bay with a force out at home, a throwout on an RBI-single as well as a fly out to end the game. 

The Lakers now move to 7-11 on the season as well as 5-9 in the division, Brockport now remains at .500 winning percentage in both the SUNYAC West as well as overall as they remain at 6-6. The Lakers look to test their strength in their next matchup against the red hot Cortland Red Dragons who are coming in on a six game winning streak and have beaten the Lakers in the last four matchups. First pitch is scheduled for Monday, May 3rd at 3:00 p.m and WTOP 10 will be covering the game as well.

Oswego State Softball Heads to Brockport for Doubleheader

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — Oswego State Softball heads to the road this weekend, eager to steal 4 crucial SUNYAC West division points against a familiar foe in the Brockport Golden Eagles. Oswego has gotten the best of Brockport and most of their recent matchups, winning 8 of 10 matchups since the 2016 season. However for this doubleheader, it will be crucial Oswego are able to complete a sweep to jump over Brockport in the standings to make a last minute push for a playoff spot. The Lakers are currently last in the SUNYAC West Standings.

In their last meeting almost a month ago, the Lakers were able to split the doubleheader with Brockport with lots of offense in their win and very little in the loss. Oswego would lose their first game of the series 5-2 but were able to bounce back with a convincing win 9-3 and Zoe Mennig and Madelana Wrubel contributed with two runs a piece. It will be a battle for the Lakers nonetheless as they have not swept the Golden Eagles on their home field since April of 2017. 

As for Brockport they have been fairly 50/50 with going 3-3 in their last 6 as well as going 5-5 currently on the entire season including the SUNYAC. Brockport will look to rely on names such as Olivia Hayden to carry the offense as she leads the team in hits as well as runs. It sure should be a good one at the Clark V. Whited Complex in Brockport as two teams try and push for that two seed in the West Division through the fading stretch of the season, first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. for the first game and 2 p.m. for game two.

Oswego State Softball Team Splits in Doubleheader Versus New Paltz

OSWEGO, N.Y — The Oswego State Softball team went 1-1 against the New Paltz Hawks on Tuesday, dropping the first game 9-3 before winning the second 6-2. With the win in the second game, the Lakers cut their win streak and gain momentum heading into the next conference doubleheader.

The first game started slow as neither team scored until infielder, Julia Mastrup, scored in the 5th inning and put the Hawks up 1-0. New Paltz then followed that with a 6-run 6th inning and put the games out of reach for Oswego. Three players scored for Oswego, including Madelana Wrubel, Leah Czerwinski, and Jessica DuPoint. The Lakers, desperate for a win, did not disappoint in the second game however.

Oswego kicked off the rematch with a 2nd inning home run by senior utility player, Taylor DuBois. The game was stagnant for the next three innings until Kelly Marmor tied the game with a home run in the 6th inning. Though, that would be as close as the game got. The Lakers exploded in their 6th inning at-bat, scoring 5 runs and capitalizing on poor pitching. New Paltz’s Katie Quagli would score off a Rhionna Bian RBI in the final inning, but it would be too little, to late. Five Lakers scored runs with Taylor DuBois totaling 2 runs off of 2 hits and 3 RBIs. Oswego also got great play out of their pitching core of Madison Hoeflich and Fiona Higgins who had 14 combined strikeouts on the day.

With the end of the season quickly approaching, Oswego will have to have play nearly perfect in their final few games in order to have a chance at the postseason. The Lakers will have the opportunity to improve in conference play as they take on the Brockport Golden Eagles in a doubleheader on May 1st. Oswego State Softball Team Prepares For Doubleheader versus New Paltz

OSWEGO, N.Y — The Oswego State Softball team will look to bounce back from their most recent defeat to Buffalo State as they take on the New Paltz Hawks on April 27th. They’ll compete in back-to-back games at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 pm for a non-conference doubleheader. The Lakers are currently on a four game losing streak heading into the pair of games.

Both the Lakers and Hawks come into Tuesday’s matchup with losing records and are desperate for a late season sweep. Oswego is 5-9 which includes a pair of shutouts to SUNY Geneseo and Buffalo State on April 23rd. While New Paltz won their last game vs. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, they went 2-9 in their previous eleven games this season. The Lakers will be lead by junior 1st baseman, Zoe Menning, in Tuesday’s doubleheader. She leads the team in at-bats (45), hits (23), and home runs (3). She also bats a .511 average, which is the highest on the team. Oswego will have to get solid performances out of their talented pitching bullpen to ensure a victory. Madison Hoeflich has a 2.40 ERA and is 3-3 as the Lakers starting pitcher. While sophomore Fiona Higgins has a bit higher of an ERA (4.32), she leads the team in strikeouts with 33. This could be a high scoring contest if Oswego is able to capitalize on New Paltz’s poor pitching. The Hawks bullpen averages a 5.75 ERA and have given up a combined 107 hits this season.

Oswego is in “win now” mode and Tuesday’s doubleheader could change around their 2021 season. WTOP 10 will be at Laker Softball Field for the doubleheader.

Oswego State Softball Defeated by Buffalo State

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Softball team took on the Buffalo State Bengals at home on Saturday, April 14th. The Lakers would get swept by the Bengals as the games finished with scores of 4-2 and 11-3. For Oswego, the two losses put the Lakers on a four-game losing streak against two conference opponents. The Lakers now sit in the bottom of the SUNYAC West Standings, after being tied for second entering this past weekend. The Bengals move past Brockport, Fredonia, and Oswego and take sole possession of second place in the division.

Game one featured a close seven innings as Oswego drew first with Zoe Mennig scoring off a single from Samantha Morgan. The Lakers would hold be able to hold the Bengals till the top of the fourth before Buffalo State secured two runs to take over the lead. The Bengals would add two more the following inning and Oswego was unable to rebound in the later portion of the contest. The Lakers would get one run in the bottom of the seventh inning but it would not be enough. Fiona Higgins would pitch a complete game for the Lakers, giving up five hits and four runs over the course of her time at the mound.

Madison Hoeflich would take the mound for the second contest of the afternoon. Hoeflich would have a tough time keeping the Bengals in check as Buffalo State tallied six runs in the first two innings. Higgins would return to the mount to relive Hoeflich but Oswego was never able to bounce back with offense. Madelana Wrubel would tally one run in the contest before Buffalo State was able to force a mercy rule to end the game in the fifth inning.

The softball team is now 5-9 overall and currently on a four-game losing streak heading into their non-conference doubleheader against New Paltz. The Hawks are currently 2-8 in the SUNYAC East Division and will travel to Oswego for two seven inning contests on Tuesday, April 27th. The contests are scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the Laker Softball field. WTOP 10 will be live at the field for all the action in this highly contested non-conference matchup.

Oswego State Softball Looks to Rebound After Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y.– The Oswego State Lakers Softball team went into Geneseo on Friday to look for revenge after being swept on their homefield just a few weeks ago. It was all Geneseo though in the doubleheader today as they shut out the Lakers 7-0 in the first game and 6-0 in the second matchup of the day. The Lakers fall to 5-7 on the season and currently sit in third place in the SUNYAC West standings with a conference record of 4-6 after Friday’s results.

Holding the Lakers scoreless in the first game was Knights pitcher Nicole Schwartz who only allowed 6 hits the entire contest and still remains perfect at 5-0 this season at the mound. The Knights were able to jump out early with three different RBI’s which led to 5 runs in the second inning that would eventually seal the fate of Oswego State in the first game. Moving on to the second matchup of the day, once again it was Geneseo’s offense striking early. With three runs scored by the Knights in the first inning as well as two in the third and one in the 5th to cap off a 6-0 shutout in game two. As for Geneseo, they improve to 9-4 on the season and remain at the top of the SUNYAC West division. The Knights will have a little under a week  off with their next contest not until Wednesday at SUNY Brockport.

Looking on from this contest the Lakers will look to rebound on a quick turn around as they face off against the Buffalo State Bengals today at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. at Laker Softball Field. Oswego State was able to sweep the last doubleheader against the Bengals with final scores of 8-5 and 9-7. Oswego State Softball Heads to Geneseo for SUNYAC Doubleheader

GENESEO, N.Y. — Oswego State Softball takes the field after four full days off with a doubleheader on Friday, April 23rd in Geneseo at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. as the Lakers take on the Knights. Geneseo enters at 7-4 (5-3) and in sole possession of first place in SUNYAC West Division, Oswego comes in at 5-5 (4-4) and a chance to take first place in SUNYAC West with a doubleheader sweep. Oswego is in a tight battle in the division as there is currently a three way tie between Fredonia, Brockport, and Oswego heading into the doubleheader.

Oswego and Geneseo met at Laker Softball Field on Friday, April 9th when Geneseo swept the Lakers 9-1 and 5-0. Fiona Higgins was the best hitter in the doubleheader going 2-4 with the only Oswego RBI on the day. Nicole Schwartz and Lauren Kersch combined to throw all 12 innings on the day (game one was abbreviated to five innings due to mercy rule) allowing just five hits, one unearned run and 12 strikeouts. Oswego has gone 4-2 since being swept by Geneseo, and will look to keep some offense rolling into the weekend which features a Friday doubleheader at Geneseo, and a Saturday doubleheader at home versus Buffalo State. 

Madison Hoeflich won SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week last week with a 2-0 record, Hoeflich threw 10 innings allowing just seven hits and three runs to get her season ERA down to 2.66. Hoeflich will likely be locked in a pitchers duel in one of the games against Schwartz who has a 1.17 ERA, or Kersch with a 2.68 ERA very similar to Hoeflich. Zoe Mennig is not only the best hitter for Oswego, but also one of the best in the SUNYAC. Mennig leads SUNYAC in batting average with a .545, tied for second in the conference with three home runs, and leads the team in RBIs with 12. Oswego Softball plays four games in two days starting with a doubleheader Friday, April 23rd at Geneseo at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Oswego State Softball Takes On Fredonia

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Oswego State Softball hosts Fredonia for a SUNYAC West doubleheader on Sunday, April 18th at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. at Laker Softball Field. The Lakers have the longest current active win streak in SUNYAC softball, at three straight wins, Oswego looks to extend their win streak against the Blue Devils in this critical matchup.

The Lakers offense put up 17 runs in the doubleheader at Buffalo State this past Wednesday, the most runs they have tallied in a doubleheader so far this season. Oswego hit five home runs Wednesday, after hitting none in the first six games of the season, two apiece from Zoe Mennig and Samantha Morgan, and one off the bat of Fiona Higgins. Mennig leads the team with a .577 batting average, along with a team high 10 RBIs, and the only triple the Lakers have on the season. Madelana Wrubel is second on the team in batting average with a .400, as well as a team high four doubles. Oswego has thrown just three pitchers over the first eight games, all are sophomores, and Madison Hoeflich is emerging as the ace of the trio with a 2.43 ERA over 23 innings, and two complete games.

Fredonia comes in tied with Oswego for second place in the SUNYAC at 3-3, but the Blue Devils have a 3-7 overall record compared to Oswego’s 4-4 overall record. Nicole Kumro leads Fredonia with 5 RBIs, Katie Yudin leads with a .478 batting average, and both girls have the only Fredonia home runs of the season. All four Fredonia pitchers who have thrown more than two innings have an ERA over four, as opposing teams average 9.6 runs per game against SUNY Fredonia.

Oswego softball takes the field Sunday, April 18th at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. against Fredonia, as the Laker bats will look to stay hot against the struggling Fredonia pitching. WTOP 10 will be at the field for all the action for Oswego State fans.

Oswego State Softball Sweeps Buffalo State on the Road

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Oswego State Softball went on the road Wednesday, April 14th for a SUNYAC West doubleheader at Buffalo State in which the Lakers got the sweep by scores of 8-5 and 9-7. Oswego had a 24 hit day, as the Lakers who were 1-4 at one point, are now on a three game win streak with a 4-4 overall record and 3-3 conference record. The Lakers lineup had not hit a home run through their first six games of the 2021 season, before hitting five across two games against Buffalo State.

Oswego hit a home run in each of the first three innings of game one, and six extra base hits in the early game. Zoe Mennig set the tone for the Lakers in her first at bat of the day, in the top of the first inning of game one with a two run home run. Samantha Morgan kept it going with two outs in the top of the second with a solo shot of her own. Fiona Higgins picked up her first home run of the season on a two run home run in the second, and Mennig made it back to back with her second of the day. Mennig and Morgan both had three hit days to go with three RBIs for the former, and two RBIs for the latter, in the 8-5 Lakers win. 

In game two the Lakers picked up a run in the first inning for the third straight game. Oswego went off for a six run first inning, as the Lakers batted around and got RBIs from three different players, each RBI coming with two outs. Taylor DuBois had an RBI double to start the scoring, and Fiona Higgins scored on a wild pitch to the following batter Ellie Mahoney. Leah Czerwinski would slap an RBI single up the middle, and get driven in by the following batter Samantha Morgan courtesy of a three run shot, Morgan’s second home run of the day. Buffalo State answered back in the bottom of the first with six runs of their own, and each team would tack on a run between the second and fifth innings. It was a 7-7 score heading into the sixth inning before Mennig and DuBois went back to back with a pair of RBI singles, to win the game 9-7. Additional contributions in game two came from Madelana Wrubel who was 3-5, and Madison Hoeflich who threw four shutout innings of one hit pitching in relief.

The second win completes the softball team’s first doubleheader sweep since April 22nd 2019 against Fredonia. Oswego softball returns to the field in a SUNYAC West doubleheader at home, against Fredonia Sunday, April 18th at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. at the Oswego softball field. WTOP 10 will have all the action with the doubleheader being broadcasted by the television station.

Schedule Changes for Oswego State Baseball and Softball

Athletic teams at SUNY Oswego continue to feel the effects of COVID-19 in the form of game postponements and cancellations. The start of the season for the Oswego State baseball team is pushed back, and the softball team has a third of their remaining games canceled or postponed.

Oswego baseball was scheduled to open their season on the road at Saint John Fisher in a doubleheader on Saturday March 27 which was postponed. The season opener then became Wednesday March 31 against Ithaca at home, and that game was canceled. The Lakers baseball team is now scheduled to start their season Saturday April 3rd in a 1:00 and 3:00 doubleheader at Brockport.

Oswego softball opened their season with a doubleheader at RIT on Monday March 22, the Lakers lost the first game 9-8, and won the second game 4-3. The 1-1 Lakers softball team was scheduled to play at Saint John Fisher in a doubleheader on Monday March 29, those two games are postponed. Oswego softball was slated for a doubleheader on back to back days, Wednesday April 7 versus Houghton, and Thursday April 8 at Potsdam, all four of those games have been canceled. Oswego softball is scheduled to play their next game in a doubleheader April 10 at home against Brockport.

Oswego baseball will get a late start to their season, and softball will have a long layoff before returning to game action. Men’s lacrosse plays Friday April 2 at 4:00 at Brockport and Women’s lacrosse returns back to action Saturday April 3 at 1:00 versus Fredonia at home. Catch all the action on WTOP 10 as the spring sports season continues on.

Oswego State Softball splits games with RIT Tigers

Oswego State Softball split their Monday afternoon doubleheader at RIT with a 9-8 loss in game one and a 4-3 game two win. The Lakers showed lots of promise for their 2021 season in these first two games of the campaign.

In game one, Oswego got out to an early 5-1 lead through two innings. The majority of the offense in the first two innings came from Zoe Menning and Taylor DuBois who had two RBIs apiece, and Brianna LoMonaco who scored two runs. RIT chipped away with three runs of their own in the fifth as it was 6-5 with the Lakers in the lead after five. Oswego would get insurance runs in the top of the 6th and 7th to make the score 8-5, but the Tigers erased that lead during a four run comeback in the bottom of the 7th to win the contest by a score of 9-8. 

Game two started off the same as game one, with the Lakers offense getting out to an early lead. This time it would be a 3-0 Laker lead after two innings, Zoe Menning kept the hot bat going into game two with a 2 RBI double in the first inning. Each team got another run apiece to make it 4-1 after five innings. RIT showed signs of another comeback with a two run bottom of the 6th, but Madison Hoeflich weathered the storm and got back to her first five inning form. Hoeflich got out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the seventh as the Lakers prevailed and defeated RIT 4-3. Hoeflich was excellent in her first collegiate start, throwing all seven innings, giving up seven hits and leading the Lakers to their first win of the season. Oswego softball returns Sunday March 28th in a doubleheader at St. John Fisher beginning at 1:00.

Oswego State Softball gets set for RIT

The Oswego State Softball team takes the field Monday, March 22nd, for the first time since May 4th, 2019. The Lakers go on the road to take on RIT in a Monday afternoon doubleheader slated to take place at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. The Lakers nearly 700 day off season is shown in roster changes. Four of the 14 girls who appeared in the most recent game, against Cortland in the SUNYAC playoffs are on the roster this year. The 2021 Oswego softball roster features ten newcomers along with seven upperclassmen who return from the 2019 team. The upperclassmen on the team will have a big leadership role this year because the two classes have not seen game action in their college careers. 

The Tigers of RIT also have not yet played a game this season, but they were able to play ten in 2020 when they went 7-3 overall. The Tigers feature a very experienced team with nine upperclassmen plus two graduate students. Oswego starts their season with four games in Rochester, with two games against RIT at 3:00 and 5:00 Monday, March 22, as well as 1:00 and 3:00 Sunday March 28 at St. John Fisher. All of these games are non-conference as SUNYAC play does not start until April 1st.
