Progress Report: Oswego State women’s basketball

OSWEGO, N.Y. —  The Oswego State women’s basketball team started the 2021 season off strong, going 3-3 in their first six games with an average margin of victory of 33 points. However, the Lakers suffered from a four-game losing skid to end the fall semester and now sit at 3-7 heading into 2022. Although Oswego is four games under .500, they boast two blowout victories over non-SUNYAC teams in SUNY-Delhi (75-39) and Wells College (73-23).

The Lakers are currently 0-4 in SUNYAC games with losses to SUNY Cortland, Buffalo State, SUNY Brockport and Fredonia. Though they sit one game back from SUNY Plattsburgh and two games back from SUNY Geneseo in the SUNYAC standings.

The Lakers are led by senior guard Danielle Caivana who leads the team in minutes per game (33.0), points per game (15.1) and 3-pointers made (25). Freshman forward Diamond Pickett is having a great start to her collegiate career, averaging close to a double-double with 8.3 points per game and 10.1 rebounds per game. Pickett also leads the team in field goal percentage, shooting 51% from the field. Sophomore forward Caitie Lilly has been the Lakers anchor on the defensive end, racking up 14 blocks thus far in the season, including back-to-back five-block performances versus SUNY Cortland and Buffalo State.

As a team, the Lakers are giving up 60 points per game, their lowest point total allowed since 2017. However, Oswego is only averaging 62.3 points per game, with that average being inflated from their 36 and 50-point victories earlier this season. Although the Lakers are on a losing streak, they’ve been competitive in all of their games thus far, with their biggest losing deficit being just 14 points.

With Oswego sitting at 3-7 entering the new year, they’ll need to be on the winning side of their close contests to have a shot at the SUNYAC playoffs. Luckily for the Lakers, there are more 15 opportunities for them to climb back into contention, with 14 of their next 15 games being against SUNYAC rivals. Oswego’s next game comes against Alfred State College on Monday, Jan. 4. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. at the Max Ziel Gymnasium.

Progress Report: Oswego State men’s basketball

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s basketball has had a hot start to the season. They boast a 7-1 record and are undefeated in SUNYAC play over four games. The Lakers started their season on a three game win streak. They hosted the Max Ziel Tournament, beating Elmira and Hobart handily to win the whole thing. They followed the tournament with a non-conference win over Clarkson. They finished their early slate of non-conference games with their lone loss against the Nazareth Golden Flyers on November 23 in a nail bitter, they lost by two points. They opened SUNYAC play on November 30, and have won all four games thus far, beating Cortland, Buffalo State, Brockport, and Fredonia.

The team is led by Senior guard Julien Crittendon who has 12.1 points per game, while getting 2.4 rebounds per game and is second on the team is steals per game at 1.6. The team’s leader in steals per game is Freshman Guard Ahkee Anderson at 2.1 per game. Anderson also leads the team in assists at 3.9 while also contributing 8.0 points and 2.6 rebounds. Junior Guard Devin Green is the teams sharpshooter. He is hitting threes at .457% clip, which leads the team. He contributes 8.5 points per game and collects 4.5 rebounds per game. Oswego’s glass cleaner is Sophomore guard Jeremiah Sparks with 7.0 rebounds per game, while also being second on the team in scoring at 11.9. Grad Transfer Brendon Mulson has also made his impact. He averages 9.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game while being a very efficient .448% from the field shooting.

As a team, the defense is what makes them stand out. They lead the SUNYAC in points against per game at 55.8, a whole 10 points lower than second best Brockport. Against conference foes its an even better 53.3 against per game. The offense is middle of the pack so far. They average 74.0 points per game, which sits them seventh.

Currently, the team sits second in the SUNYAC, behind Geneseo who are 4-3, 3-0 in conference. They have seventeen games remaining in the season. They come out of their eighteen day break in the St. John Fisher Tournament against Rensaeller Polytechnic Institute on December 29. The winner will face the winner of St. John Fisher and Medaille on December 30. RPI currently sits 21 in the most recent men’s basketball rankings, while Oswego received 10 votes. No other SUNYAC team received votes or are ranked. The team has three non-conference games remaining, including the tournament, followed by fourteen games of conference play to finish the season. WTOP 10 will have continuing coverage of all home men’s basketball games throughout the season as the Lakers look to continue their early success.

Progress Report: Oswego State men’s hockey

OSWEGO, N.Y. — After last night’s contest in Rochester, the Oswego State men’s hockey team has completed twelve games prior to the turn of the New Year. After six SUNYAC games and five nonconference games, the Lakers find themselves with a overall record of 8-3-1. The Lakers head into Christmas Break on a five game win streak. Oswego State also posts a stellular away record which features six wins and only one lost along with a tie.

Game Recap: Oswego State @ Nazareth College

Saturday night, the Lakers headed west to Rochester to take on the Nazareth College Golden Flyers. Nazareth College was hosting the annual Hockey Fights Cancer game at Bill Gray’s Regional Iceplex so the Lakers wore their teal jerseys and the Golden Flyers wore special uniforms to honor the cause. Oswego State halted a Nazareth College comeback in overtime to get their fifth straight win by a score line of 6-5. This win was head coach Ed Gosek‘s 350th win as the bench boss for the Oswego State Lakers. His all time record as Oswego State’s head coach improves to 350-111-31 and currently posts a winning percentage of .743. Oswego State forward Alex DiCarlo would net two goals in the contest, both in the first period to put the Lakers ahead. Tyler Flack would have an assist on both of those goals along with two assists later in the contest to put up a four point night and lead the Lakers on the stats sheet. Nazareth would answer in the first period to cut the lead in half but the Lakers would find an answer in the next stanza. Oswego State would net another two goals as Connor Sleeth got a pair of his own. Sleeth was also a factor in the faceoff circle with ten wins, the most from any Oswego State player. The Golden Flyers would string together four goals in the third period, two of them coming from Spencerport native Nick Charron. The tying goal would come with one second remaining off a faceoff that push the game into overtime.

Oswego State and Nazareth would trade shots to start the overtime period before the Lakers gained procession around the one minute mark. Ryan Dickinson would be the hero the Lakers needed after the defenseman redirected the puck off a pass from DiCarlo. The forward would finish with two goals and one assist in the contest. Goaltender Eric Green would finish the contest in between the pipes as starting netminder Steven Kozikoski left the game with the trainer at the end of regulation. Kozikoski would make a total of 27 saves over the course of the sixty minutes of hockey.

Progress Report

With thirteen regular season games left prior to the start of the SUNYAC Championships, the Lakers have a nineteen day rest before the start of the Clarion/Best Western Oswego Hockey Classic. This group of young talent currently sits fifth in the conference standings with six SUNYAC games completed. The Lakers have 13 points posting a 4-1-1 conference record. One positive, the four teams ahead of Oswego State (Geneseo, Cortland, Plattsburgh State, Brockport) have all finished eight conference games. The Lakers have the advantage heading into the second half of the season with two extra conference games still ahead on the calendar. Oswego State still needs to face Buffalo State and Fredonia as those four contests linger on the schedule. Both western teams have had a rough start in terms of conference play.

In terms of offense, the Oswego State Lakers average 3.3 goals per game. The offense goes through both Alex DiCarlo and captain Travis Broughman who are both tied for the points lead with a total of thirteen. DiCarlo has found his freshman form once again and has eight tallies along with eight assist for that thirteen point total. The sophomore is currently on a three game point streak which includes two games that feature multiple point nights. Broughman headed into Rochester with a four game point streak which featured a five point night in SUNY Canton against the Kangaroos. The captains nine assists is a team high and also included in his stat column are four goals for his thirteen point total. Currently these two players are the only Lakers above a point per game. Newcomers like Connor Sleeth and Tyler Flack have also made an impact in the Lakers offense both posting nine points through twelve games. Sleeth heads into January with three goals and six assists while Flack has two goals and seven assists.

On the other side of the puck, the Lakers defensive core averages 2.3 goals against per game, the fourth best in the SUNYAC conference. Out of the eight defenseman on the roster, there is not one that has not dressed in all twelve games so far this season. The team effort on defense has kept opponents to just an average of 25.5 shots per game which compares to the 30.4 that the Lakers average on net. Transfer Troy Robillard leads the team in blocks with a total of fourteen after his eleven games played in an Oswego State uniform. In between the pipes, starting netminder Steven Kozikoski has come to mid season form after a slower start. The Laker currently averages 1.90 goals against and posts a .931 save percentage after his ten games played this season. Newcomer Eric Green has also seen time in net for Oswego State and holds a 2.89 goals against average and has a .840 save percentage. The tandem has done a solid job in the first half of the season especially in tight games.

The special teams have also come a long way after a slow start in the 2021-22 season. As of right now, the Oswego State Lakers power play unit ranks number one in the SUNYAC with a 34.7 efficiency percentage. The Lakers have scored a total of seventeen power play goals over the course of forty nine opportunities. When the Lakers are a man down, Oswego State has only given up seven power play goals to opponents, the same as Geneseo. The Oswego State Lakers rank fourth in the conference with a penalty kill that has a 84.1 success rate. The special team units will be essential to success in the second half of the season.

On the other side of the break, Oswego State will have to look forward to the annual Clarion/Best Western Oswego Hockey Classic. This year, the #4 Augsburg Auggies, SUNY Canton Kangaroos, and Skidmore Thoroughbreds will head to SUNY Oswego to compete in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. On Saturday, January 1st, SUNY Canton will take on Skidmore College at 3:00 p.m. prior to the Oswego State Lakers facing off against the Augsburg University Auggies at 7:00 p.m. in front of a hometown crowd. Sunday’s match ups will be determined by the results from Saturday but Oswego State will play during the 7:00 p.m. time slot. Oswego State has only played Augsburg University once during the 2008-09 season during the Oswego Hockey Classic. The Lakers were victorious in that contest with a final score of 5-2. The Lakers will play six more contests after that weekend in January and a majority of those games will be SUNYAC match ups. Oswego State women’s basketball falls short heading into holiday break

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s basketball team Saturday suffered an unfortunate 59-48 loss to the Fredonia Blue Devils. The Lakers stayed in it until the very end where Fredonia went on a nine point run to end the game, ultimately giving the Blue Devils the victory. It was almost as close as it can get heading into the forth with the Blue Devils only up by one point. The Lakers were ready for a battle, but came up on the losing end. Freshman Shania Iglesias was the lead scorer for the Lakers dropping an impressive seventeen points with two three pointers and nine rebounds. Right behind Iglesias was senior Danielle Caivana with twelve points. Despite this tough loss, the Lakers have to find a way to start clicking and picking up some wins. All hope is not lost as the Lakers return after the holiday season to host Alfred State January 3rd in the Max Ziel Gymnasium. Tip off is at 12 p.m. on WTOP 10!

Men’s basketball finishes semester on high, beats Fredonia

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s basketball team travelled to Fredonia to take on the Blue Devils Saturday afternoon. Their final game of the semester before an eighteen day break was a successful one with a dominant 63-48 victory. This was a game of scoring runs, with the Lakers starting the game with a 17-0 run over the first six minutes. Six different Lakers found the bottom of the net during that run, with Jeremiah Sparks leading the way with six of the seventeen. Fredonia would pull back some with an 11-4 run over the following six minutes and get the score to 21-11. The remainder of the half would be back and forth, and going into the locker rooms the score was 36-25 Lakers. Both teams were efficient from the free throw line in the half, Oswego shooting 8-11 and Fredonia 10-11.

The second half started with the Lakers pushing their lead to sixteen after five minutes, including an Oswego 6-2 run. Following a Jamal Achille dunk at the thirteen minute mark neither team would score for three straight minutes, with the scoreless run being broken by Laker Devin Green, who got the lead to seventeen again, the score being 51-34. The final ten minutes was back and forth, Oswego responding to every score by Fredonia. Sparks would finish the game for the Lakers at the free throw line, hitting both, and getting the final score to 63-48. The Lakers never faltered from their lead they grabbed in the beginning, the Blue Devils never even tying the score throughout the game. Four Lakers would score ten in the game, with Jeremiah Sparks leading the way with sixteen while adding five rebounds. Ahkee Anderson led Oswego from the free throw line going 6-6, he would have eight points on the night, while also leading the team with four steals. The three point line was not the Lakers friend in this game, Oswego going an ice cold 2-22, both made threes coming in the first half. The defense was big for Oswego in the game, 22 of their 63 points coming off Fredonia turnovers.

Oswego now sit at 7-1 this season while also being 4-0 in the SUNYAC. They sit second in the conference. Their next game is on December 29 versus Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the St. John Fisher tournament. Tip off is set for 7:00 P.M. at the Manning & Napier Varsity Gym in Pittsford, N.Y. The final of that tournament comes the following day. WTOP 10 will have continuing coverage of home games throughout the season.

Oswego State men’s hockey heads west to Rochester

OSWEGO, N.Y. — This Saturday, the Oswego State men’s hockey team will travel west down Route 104 to Rochester to take on the Nazareth College Golden Flyers. 7-3-1 Lakers take on a familiar nonconference opponent after stringing together a four game win streak which features Oswego State outscoring nineteen to four. This is due to the offense coming into form especially the powerplay unit which now ranks second in the SUNYAC with a power play efficiency of 33.3 percent. The Lakers have five powerplay goals over the course of the four game win streak heading into this weekend’s contest. Senior captain Travis Broughman leads the team in points with eleven. The Laker has three goals and eight assists through eleven games played and is currently the only Oswego State player that averages a point per game. Alex DiCarlo leads the team in goals with six total. The forward also has three assists for a total of nine points.

On the defensive side of the puck, the goaltender tandem of Steven Kozikoski and Eric Green have improved since the start of the season. Over the course of the past four games, Kozikoski has seen action in three of the contests and improved his season statistics to a 1.51 goals against average and a .944 save percentage. Green was able to get his first win as an Oswego State Laker this past weekend against SUNY Canton and posts a 2.91 goals against average and a .840 save percentage. The defensive core has allowed opponents to only score 2.1 goals per game over the course of the season.

On the other side of the ice sheet, the Nazareth Golden Flyers enter the contest with an overall record of 3-6-1 and find themselves sixth in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference. The Golden Flyers are looking for their first nonconference win over the season and are currently on a one game win streak after defeating King’s College 5-2 at home. Ryan Turse leads the Golden Flyers in points with two goals and six assists for eight total points. Forward Nick Charron is tied for the lead in goals with a total of three on the year. Starting netminder Matt Sayles posts a 3.01 goals against average with a .894 save percentage heading into the contest and will most likely start this Saturday.

Looking at the match up history, the Oswego State Lakers have only lost two games against the Golden Flyers since the teams first meet back in the 2012-13 season. Oswego has nine wins against the program and is currently on a four game win streak against Nazareth College. At Bill Grays Regional Iceplex, the Lakers are 3-1 and their only lose came during the 2015-16 season. Both teams are currently receiving votes towards the USCHO poll as Oswego State received thirteen this past week, and increase from the previous poll. In terms of Nazareth, the Golden Flyers received three votes this past week, the first time the program has been in the votes section this season. Both teams are looking to crack the top fifteen heading into the second half of the season.

Progress Report: Oswego State women’s hockey

OSWEGO, N.Y. — As the fall semester comes to a close, the Oswego State women’s hockey team finishes the first half of their 2021-22 season. The Lakers are 6-2-1 after nine games played and are third in the Northeast Women’s Hockey League (NEWHL). Oswego State posts a 3-0-2-1 record in conference play and trail behind Plattsburgh State and SUNY Cortland. Those two loses come from the two opponents the Lakers are chasing for the conference lead. The Lakers were able to string together a three game win streak heading into Christmas break after defeating SUNY Potsdam, Williams Smith, and SUNY Cortland.

So far this season, the Lakers have been led by Ariella Haas and Megan Teachout on offense. So far, the transfer from Elmira College has two goals and seven assists for nine points in her first season with Oswego State. Haas is currently the only Laker that is a point per game. Teachout, Kyleigh Grugin, and Morgan Shines are all tied for lead in goals with each player tallying four. The offense averages 3.1 goals per game with 40.4 shots per game.

On the other side of the puck, the defensive core has averaged only 2.0 goals allowed through nine games played. Defenseman Avery Webster leads the team in blocks with seven and also has four assists. In between the pipes, the goaltender tandem of Joanna Hiebert and Bryn White have done a solid job after starting their first season with the Lakers. Head Coach Mark Digby has given both goaltenders time in games but Hiebert has gotten the majority with six games played. The Michigan native currently posts a 2.30 goals against average with a .875 save percentage. White has less time in net but posts better numbers holding a 1.33 goals against average and a save percentage of .915.

After the break, Oswego State will ring in the new year with a trip to Massachusetts to take on nonconference opponent Amherst College. The January 3rd match up will be the fifth game between these two programs. Amherst currently holds the advantage in the match up history with the Mammoths holding the record 3-1. Oswego will head back to NEWHL play on January 7th when Oswego State heads to Morrisville to take on the Mustangs. City of Oswego, Port Authority officials take construction feud to court

OSWEGO N.Y. —  Construction of a storage facility at the port, meant for the transport of pot-ash or salt, is now at a standstill after city officials took the Port Authority to court. 

“Their whole attitude should have been one of picking up the phone and talking to us,” the Executive Director of the Port Authority, William Scriber said. 

Now, Port Authority officials are trying to prove that the structure will help the city if completed. 

“With this project, we’re putting a lot of money into this local economy,” Scriber said. 

Scriber explained that the port runs as its own business, creating jobs, and opening opportunities for the local economy without the help of tax money. But Mayor Barlow said they are going about the project in the wrong way – upset that the structure will block the view of the iconic Oswego lighthouse coming into the city. 

“What would really be the win is for the port to build what they originally proposed, that being the 55 foot dome..What you can do is completely skirt the entire review process,” Mayor Billy Barlow said. 

What stands now is a roughly  68-70 foot tall square structure, something city officials said they never agreed on. But Scriber said the height difference won’t change that view of the lighthouse from the Marina.

“If you’re not changing the holding capacity, or position…It’s not a major change…It’s still going to block that view, which by the way, isn’t a historical registered view,” Scriber said. 

But Fort Ontario on the other hand is a historical view of the lighthouse, and Scriber said that was the view that they worked through with the SHPO review – where the State Historic Preservation Office reviewed and eventually approved the initial proposal of the 55 foot dome.  

“The view of the Fort is not in the least obstructed by the building,” Scriber added. 
City residents are split, some feeling as though the structure isn’t a big deal, and others agreeing with the Mayor. Lee Chetney is a city resident who said the view of the lighthouse is going to be, ”forever changed.” 

“You used to be able to come into the city…and ‘wow, I made it to Oswego, and look at how beautiful it is’ now they put that thing up and I hope they take it down because it’s just terrible,” city resident Lee Chetney said.

National emergency declared in child and teen mental health – what this means for college students

In early October, a group of health professionals and psychiatric experts around the nation gathered enough data to declare a national emergency in child and adolescent mental health. 

This comes nearly two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, and for young adults specifically in higher education, their mental health is also taking a toll. 

“With the environment constantly changing, it’s kind of hard to reach stability in mental health,” Nicole Hillyard, a student at University at Buffalo said about her own struggles this year. 

This includes SUNY Oswego students who have been feeling the effects of keeping up with mandates as the school resumes in-person activities. 
“We’re so used to just having all these online classes, and not doing as much, and now we’re doing so much more,” Seth Nesbitt, a SUNY Oswego student said in regards to coming back in person. “I feel like a lot of my peers and I are having a hard time with the readjustments.”

“I just needed to take this semester off to help fix my mental health”

A study called Healthy Minds Network found that last fall, college students in particular reported peak levels of depression and anxiety. 

The study is led by four professors at different universities, and it details the rising trend over the last several  years of mental health concerns, especially depression and anxiety, among college students. 

Experts with the study reported that 47% of students screened positive for “clinically significant symptoms of depression, and/or anxiety,” which is the highest percentage since the trials began in 2007.

“I have terrible anxiety attacks, like constantly, so I kinda knew that if I lived alone, especially two hours away, I would have to come home every day, and I knew that wouldn’t have worked,” Keaundrea Handford, a student at SUNY Brockport said about why she took this semester off. “I just needed to take this semester off to help fix my mental health.” 

The Healthy Minds Network also studied that feeling of isolation, something Handford said she dreaded about going back to school.

In the study, they found that about 66% of students indicated feeling isolated from others sometimes or often, which experts said is a key risk factor in mental health.

At Wayne Behavioral Health, a mental health center located in Wayne County, representatives said most facilities no longer have enough staff to cover the rise in mental health concerns. However, the introduction of telehealth services during the pandemic helped them bring a new resource to patients in need. 

“Because of the fact that a lot of insurance companies now kind of across the board are  allowing telehealth, which is either by telephone or video conference,” Suzanne Catholdi, the communications liaison for Wayne Behavioral Health said. “A lot of people who weren’t seen before now have more accessibility.” 

Mental health facilities all over the country have been struggling to keep up with the rise of these mental health concerns, and many have also been utilizing telehealth services as a result. 

Catholdi said younger people and college students being seen at Wayne Behavioral are taking advantage of the virtual services now offered if they aren’t already using their on-campus college therapists. 

However wait times across the board for many mental health facilities are becoming problematic for those in need. For Strong Hospital in Rochester, they said over the summer that wait times for those seeking therapy reached over one year. 

“Our mental health therapists, they need to be able to be available and be on top of the needs, and we need to be supportive of our medical staff as well,” Catholdi said about facilities falling behind.

“They lost that, they lost those contacts, they lost that structure, a lot of kids were at home alone…”

She emphasized that staff all around are “suffering,” so It’s important to keep working through the pandemic and keep schools open as a resource for those struggling. 

“There were a lot of kids who were struggling already, that really needed that contact in the school with the teachers and professors,” Catholdi said while talking about the effects the shutdowns had on students. 

“When there’s nothing for people to do, and no support in place, and a big question mark day-to-day about what they’re doing,” Catholdi added. “It was a big disaster waiting to happen.” 

She said that students and adults “lost that structure,” and it led to a huge uptick in mental health concerns. Now therapy has become a big point of discussion. 

“I did start therapy, and it actually helped quite a lot,” Nesbitt said. 

But Nesbitt also said that despite these concerns being more publicly talked about, some students aren’t opening up enough. 

“I would recommend that help to anyone,” Nesbitt explained, “Those who may be going through something, but even if you’re just alive, it’s good to just have that outlet.” 
As things continue to open up, and people adjust to a normal life after two years shut down, those mental health concerns continue to be analyzed. The Healthy Minds Study is still in the process of gathering data during this time, and more colleges are being enrolled to help diversify the results.

Oswego State men’s hockey gets another weekend sweep

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team finds themselves coming out of the weekend with another two victories. The Lakers defeated SUNY Canton Friday night on the road by a score of 8-2 and then returned home Saturday to get a conference win 5-1 against the Morrisville State Mustangs. The Lakers are now 7-3-1 with one game left prior to a couple weeks off over the month of December.

Friday night, Oswego State traveled two hours and thirty minutes north to take on the SUNY Canton Kangaroos. The non conference victory featured a 8-2 score line with Oswego and Canton going into the second period tied at 1-1. Tyler Flack would get his first goal of the evening with Jackson Arcan snagging the assist. That powerplay goal was the first of five unanswered goals with four of them coming in the second period. Alex Dicarlo, AJ Ryan, Garrett Clegg, and Mac Lewis all got credited with the tallies to put the Lakers ahead big heading into the second period. The Kangaroos were able to get one powerplay goal before the end of the stanza but in the third period, Oswego State would find three more pucks going into the back of the net. Flack and DiCarlo both tallied their second goals of the evening and captain Travis Broughman found himself back in the goal column with the final goal of the evening. Oswego State netminder Eric Green would get his first win in between the pipes as a Laker after making fourteen saves and only allowing two goals.

On Saturday, head coach Ed Gosek put junior netminder Steven Kozikoski back in the net for their match up against Morrisville State. Tyson Kirkby would snag the first goal of the contest and let the teddy bears fly on Teddy Bear Night. All the toys were donated to Toys For Tots during this holiday season. That powerplay goal was assisted by Rocco Andreacchi and Ben Addison within the first ten minutes of the contest. Kirkby would tally another at the end of another powerplay for the Lakers as Flack and Arcan got back into the assist column. In the second period, it would be the Lakers once again as two defenseman buried two goals past the Morrisville State goaltender. Troy Robillard and Quinn Warmuth would find the back of the net and Warmuth gets his first goal as an Oswego State Laker. The two teams would trade back and forth powerplay goals as DiCarlo added another to his season totals. Kozikoski would make thirty saves and give up one goal over the course of the contest.

The Lakers now sit in third place in the SUNYAC conference behind Geneseo and Brockport. Oswego does have a game at hand compared to the two teams, and will not play any conference games until the middle of January when Potsdam and Plattsburgh State travel to the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. Till then, Oswego will head on the road down Route 104 towards Rochester to take on Nazareth College on Saturday in a non-conference match up. Oswego State Women’s Basketball falls short this weekend

OSWEGO, N.Y. — It was a rough weekend for the Lakers as they suffered two unfortunate losses Friday and Saturday. The Lakers played the Buffalo State Bengals Friday. Despite a valiant effort, the Lakers fell short with a fourteen point loss. Oswego State was off to a great start with help by star sophomore Chastin Giles. Giles had yet another dominant performance scoring twenty-one points. Not an uncommon sight seeing her put up big numbers like this. Giles was splashin all night, scoring five three pointers. Senior Danielle Caivana also had a notable performance with fourteen points. Unfortunately the Lakers were outscored in the first three quarters making a fourth quarter comeback highly unlikely. Despite Outscoring the Bengals in the fourth, it wasn’t enough to get the job done. The Lakers then had to shift their attention to the Golden Eagles of Brockport who have been on a tear this year.
The Lakers took on SUNY Brockport Saturday in a very close game from start to finish. The Lakers put up a fight but sadly came up short in a twelve point loss. Both teams put up big numbers in the first quarter with the Golden Eagles putting up nineteen and the Lakers with sixteen. From there it was a battle. The Lakers were hungry for a victory and fought tooth and nail to come out on top. Senior Danielle Caivana had yet another great performance dropping sixteen points, twelve of those points coming from threes. Caivana is the backbone of this offense and will surely be missed next season. Freshman Shania Iglesias also put up sixteen yesterday. These two combined for half of the teams points this game. Brockport was able to break free in the third and fourth quarter, outscoring the Lakers by fifteen to solidify their victory. The Lakers have a week to recuperate and try to get back in the win column as they go on the road to take on Fredonia on December 11th at 12:00 p.m.

Oswego State women’s hockey completes comeback to secure victory in Cortland

CORTLAND N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team traveled down Interstate 81 on Friday to take on the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons. The Lakers tallied four goals in the final period of regulation to win the NEWHL contest 5-4. Oswego State would strike first in the first period as Simone Bednarik would net her second goal of this season. Megan Teachout would add another assist to her stats column and the Lakers headed into the first intermission with the lead. The Red Dragons would come back in the second period and put three goals past Oswego State netminder Joanna Hiebert. Oswego would not have an answer until the third period. The Lakers would snag a powerplay goal off the twig of Mack Hull. The forward got her fourth goal of the season which was assisted by Chyne Kennedy and Ariella Haas. Cortland would respond with another goal only minutes later. From this point on, the game was in the hands of the Lakers as the women’s hockey team rallied back in the final stanza. Goals from Kyleigh Grugin, Lizzie Burke, and the game winner from Hull. Kennedy would get the assist on the game winning goal to put her assist total at two that day.

Oswego State improves to 6-2-1 overall during the 2021-22 season. In terms of the NEWHL conference, the Lakers find themselves back in second place after the victory with a conference record of 3-0-2-1 and seven total points. Oswego State will have some time to take a break and enjoy their holiday season before returning back in 2022. The Lakers will travel to Amherst, Massachusetts to take on Amherst College in a non-conference match up on January 3rd. A Look Ahead: Oswego State men’s hockey prepares for SUNY Canton and SUNY Morrisville

OSWEGO N.Y. — After completing nine games into the season, the Oswego State men’s hockey team finds themselves second in the State University of New York Athletic Conference and trending upward towards the national poll. After starting slow with two losses against Hobart College and Elmira College the opening weekend, the Lakers were able to get back on track going 3-0-1 against SUNYAC opponents. The wins coming against opponents like SUNY Cortland, SUNY Brockport, and SUNY Potsdam. The 2-2 tie against Plattsburgh State was the only fall back during that four games stretch. The Geneseo Ice Knights came to the Deborah F. Stanley Arena on November 20th in anticipated match up. The Lakers would fall 6-1 to the Ice Knights after six unanswered goals over the course of the contest. Although the Lakers out shot the Ice Knights 23-17, Oswego could not find a way around Geneseo netminder Matt Petizian.

The Lakers were able to get back in the win column this past weekend with two wins against the Williams College Ephs. The 3-0 and 3-1 victories put Oswego at 5-3-1 overall record. Underclassmen Shane Bull and Garrett Clegg both had stand out weekends with Bull recording a goal and assist in each contest and Clegg with two goals and one assist. Clegg was named Oswego State Athletics Male Athlete of the Week due to his performances. Junior goaltender Steven Kozikoski has continued to come to form in between the pipes for Oswego State making 50 saves over the course of the two games and only allowing one goal. Kozikoski was named the SUNYAC Prestosports Goaltender of the Week due to his performances in this past weekend’s games.

Junior captain Travis Broughman is tied for the lead in points through the first nine games of the season. The forward has two goals and five assists for seven points in these contests. Connor Sleeth has matched that points total with one goal and six assists. The sophomore forward scored his first career collegiate goal in the Teal Game against Cortland and started the season with a six game point streak. On the defensive side, transfer Troy Robillard leads the team in blocks with a total of twelve. The junior defenseman has also tallied one goal and two assists for three points through his eight games played with the Lakers this season.

Around the SUNYAC

With most teams playing five games or more in the conference, SUNYAC fans have been able to see how the conference is going to shake out this season. Without any shock, the Geneseo Ice Knights lead the pack with a conference record of 4-0-0-0-1 with 13 points. Geneseo’s tie comes against Cortland two weekends ago. Their 13 points are followed up by the Cortland Red Dragons with 11 points. The Red Dragons are coming off a 4-1 win over the Morrisville State Mustangs Wednesday night. The Lakers who sit with 10 points and a conference record of 3-0-1-0-1 hold the third spot. Oswego State’s loss came against Geneseo in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena and their tie against the Plattsburgh State Cardinals on the North Country swing. Plattsburgh State and SUNY Brockport are tied for fourth with nine points. However, the Cardinals have already played seven conference games compared to the five the Golden Eagles have completed. The two teams out west, Buffalo State and Fredonia, both have six points and conference records of 2-0-1-0-0. Rounding out the conference, Morrisville and Potsdam are both looking for their first wins of the season after starting 0-0-5-0-0 and 0-0-6-0-0. As the fall semester finishes up, a similar picture has emerged. Geneseo remains to be the top dog in the conference after winning the SUNYAC Championship in 2019-20, and everyone else is chasing the number one team in the nation.

Around the Nation

After five weeks of the United States College Hockey Online Division III poll, Oswego State fans have been able to see where the Lakers fall compared to the rest of Division III hockey. Throughout the beginning of the season, the Lakers have been receiving two to four votes per week. Compared to the rest of the SUNYAC, Oswego is one of just three teams currently listed in the poll that represent the conference. Geneseo remained at number one for the fourth straight week receiving eighteen first place votes. The Ice Knights have an 8-0-1 record overall and will not face Oswego State until February 5th when the Lakers travel back to Geneseo. SUNY Brockport also has received votes the first five weeks of the season, but has been decreasing in the votes count due to loses the past couple of weeks. The Golden Eagles got four votes this past week after a 2-3 lost to Connecticut College and a 7-1 victory over Chatham University in the Skidmore College tournament.

As the national poll stands right now, Oswego State will play three more teams that find themselves in the national poll. The first being January 1st in the Oswego State Hockey Classic as current #4 Augsburg University takes on the Lakers at 7:00 p.m. in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. Eight days later, Oswego will travel down Interstate 90 to take on current #3 Utica College in a Sunday afternoon contest on January 9th. This will the second contest between these two non-conference opponents this season after the Pioneers found themselves victorious in a preseason match up in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. The final nationally ranked opponent will be the SUNYAC match up on February 5th in Geneseo.

A Look Ahead

Heading into this weekend, Oswego State sets their sights on SUNY Canton and then SUNY Morrisville. Friday night, the Lakers will head two and a half hours up north to take on the Kangaroos in a non-conference battle. Canton comes into the match up posting a 2-2-1 record and on a one game losing streak. Recently, the Kangaroos canceled their holiday tournament due to COVID-19 protocols. This will be the second contest these two teams will play this season after SUNY Canton dropped an exhibition match up to the Lakers earlier in October. This game gives Oswego another opportunity to continue their win streak and gain national attention as the season continues on.

On Saturday, the Lakers will head home for another SUNYAC match up in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. The Morrisville State Mustangs will return to Oswego to add another chapter to the two team’s history books. The last time the Lakers faced the Mustangs, it was a 7-0 victory on February 15th, 2020. The Lakers have won the last seventeen match ups against the Mustangs and have only dropped one game against Morrisville. Special teams will have an impact on Saturday’s match up as the Lakers post a 25.0 percent power play efficiency compared to the Mustang’s penalty kill that is below an 80.0 percent success rate. Morrisville comes to Oswego after losing Wednesday night to Cortland 4-1. Oswego looks to continue their success in the conference as the team chases the top spot in the SUNYAC. Saturday night is also the annual Teddy Bear Toss game for Oswego State men’s hockey. On the first goal, Oswego State fans are asked to throw teddy bears on the ice. Oswego State women’s basketball falls short in SUNYAC matchup

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s basketball team hosted SUNY Cortland in a hard fought SUNYAC opener last night. The 3-3-1 Lakers looked to pick up momentum after a dominant win Sunday night. Despite a valiant effort, the Lakers came up short. With a final score of 67-53 the Lakers continued to fight until the final buzzer. Cortland had a twelve point lead at the end of the first quarter that unfortunately set the tone for the rest of the game. The Lakers put up a fight and kept the game close. Senior Danielle Caivana was on fire scoring a whopping twenty-three points this game. Despite Caivana’s outstanding performance, Cortland refused to let up and fought their way to victory. Sophomores Chastin Giles and Caitie Lilly were the other key contributors for the Lakers. While this loss must have stung for the Lakers, they turn their attention towards another SUNYAC matchup against the Buffalo State Bengals December 3rd in the Max Zeil Gymnasium.  Tip-Off is at 5:30 p.m. on WTOP 10!

Men’s basketball rolls over Cortland in first SUNYAC matchup

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s basketball team took on the Cortland Red Dragons at home in the their SUNYAC opener Tuesday night. A great night on defense for the team saw them shutdown the Red Dragons and win 69-44. A fast start by the Red Dragons saw them grab an early 6-2 lead, but Oswego took control from there. The next twelve minutes saw the Lakers outscore Cortland 25-3, including an eight minute stretch where Cortland wouldn’t score at all. The scoring run was lead by guards Julien Crittendon, ten points, and Devin Green, eight points. The teams went into the locker rooms at the half with Oswego up a commanding 33-16. Oswego held the Cortland to 25% shooting in the first half, and 1-7 from beyond the arc.

The second half started with senior Brendon Mulson hitting a shot for his 1,001 career collegiate point, a major milestone on his part. Oswego would keep the defensive pressure high through the second half, with seven minutes left they had grown the lead to 56-28. After some Cortland makes, Green would add to his scoring output, hitting three straight threes to extend the lead to 65-35. Oswego’s reserves would finish the game from their, and the final score would be a whopping 69-44. Green lead the Lakers in scoring on the night with twenty points, adding four rebounds. Crittendon also had a good night with fourteen points of his own and three steals. Jeremiah Sparks cleaned the boards with fourteen rebounds for Oswego. The Lakers were efficient shooting on the night, 40% overall, while 39% from deep. They also scored nineteen points off turnovers.

The Lakers next game comes against the Buffalo State Bengals (0-4) at home in the Max Ziel Gymnasium. They look to keep the hot start going and extend on their now 4-1 record. Tip off is set for 7:30 P.M. WTOP 10 will have coverage of the game starting just before tip off.

Oswego State men’s hockey sweeps Williams College

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team travelled to Williamstown, Massachusetts this past weekend to take on the Williams College Ephs in two non-conference match ups. The Lakers played Saturday night and Sunday afternoon both resulting in 3-0 and 3-1 victories against the Ephs. Oswego improves to 5-3-1 and bounced back after their 6-1 loss against Geneseo the previous weekend.

Oswego rolled into town on a fast start as Shane Bull tallied a powerplay goal in the second part of the first period. Bull snags his first career goal as a Laker which was assisted by Travis Broughman and Garrett Clegg. Clegg would get Oswego’s next tally which once again came on the man advantage towards the end of the first stanza. Clegg’s first career goal as an Oswego State Laker was assisted by Bull. Both would have a goal and assist in the contest. The game would remain scoreless in the 2nd period before Broughman secured the game with an empty netter near the end of regulation. Steven Kozikoski stood tall in between the pipes for the Lakers as the junior goaltender secured the shutout and recorded 24 saves. The Lakers would finish two for eight on the powerplay and nine for nine playing shorthanded.

Kozikoski would get the start in the rematch but the first period would have a different outcome compared to the night before. The Ephs would get one pass the Oswego State defense during even strength play a little over six minutes into the period. The Lakers would have an answer on the powerplay as Jackson Arcan scored his first career goal with the Lakers. The goal that came in the final minute of the first period was assisted by veterans Tyson Kirkby and Tyler Antonucci. The Lakers would not look back in the second stanza as Shane Bull tallied another goal which was assisted by Ryan Dickinson. The powerplay goal put Oswego ahead for the first time in the contest. In the third period, Clegg added another goal to his stat column to put Oswego ahead 3-1. The Lakers went two for three on the man advantage and two for two while shorthanded. Kozikoski made 26 saves on 27 shots faced during Sunday’s game and only gave up one goal against over the course of the weekend.

The Oswego State men’s hockey team sets their sights on SUNY Canton and SUNY Morrisville this weekend ahead of the end of the fall semester. Oswego continues their road trip this Friday as the Lakers head to take on the SUNY Canton Kangaroos in a non-conference match up. Oswego State took on SUNY Canton during the pre season as the Lakers walked away with a 9-1 victory in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. On Saturday, the Lakers return home for their final home game of the semester against the SUNY Morrisville Mustangs. Oswego State women’s basketball dominates Wells Express in fifty point victory

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s basketball team was on a tear on Sunday when they went on the road to take on the 0-3 Wells Express. A dominant victory gave the Lakers their third win, as they now sit at 3-3. At no point was this game close as the Lakers sailed past the Express in a 73-23 victory. They outscored the Express in all four quarters, holding them to just three points in the first. From there the Lakers poured it on, scoring twenty-six in the second, eighteen in the third, and fourteen in the fourth. This high scoring offense combined with lockdown defense made it a very long day for Express. This Lakers team is very impressive and continues to showcase their skill with these performances. senior Danielle Caivana was electric in today’s game, dropping fourteen points and four steals. Logan Castiglione, Laila Elor, and Chastin Giles all had impressive performances with eight points each. The Lakers can’t celebrate for too long as they shift their attention towards SUNY Cortland this Tuesday at the Max Ziel Gymnasium. Men’s basketball falls short, takes first loss of year

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s basketball team took on Nazareth at home Tuesday night. Playing in their final game before opening SUNYAC play, the team couldn’t complete the comeback, losing 67-65. The game started with Nazareth taking a 10-4 lead early on, but the Lakers would tie it up at ten soon after. The Golden Flyers then went on another scoring run, over the next seven minutes they jumped the score to 23-13. The teams would go back and forth the rest of the half, with the score being 41-33 at the break. Nazareth was very efficient from beyond the arc in the half shooting 8-14. Oswego was also very accurate, shooting 5-8 from three point land.

The game was back and forth for most of the second half, but the Golden Flyers grew the lead to thirteen just with just under six minutes to play. The Lakers started their comeback with a pair of jumpers and a three from freshman guard Julien Crittendon. Oswego then cut the lead to four with just under two to play, and a block from Brendon Mulson would lead to a three for junior guard Devin Green to make the score 66-65 with a minute and half to go. The Lakers couldn’t capitalize on the momentum though, missing two layups and a corner three for the win. The Lakers played tough basketball all game. The second half the defense stepping up, holding Nazareth to 1-5 from deep, and 27% from the field. Jeremiah Sparks led the team in scoring with seventeen points, with Julien Crittendon and Kaleb Cook having thirteen and ten respectively. Mulson cleaned the boards, leading the whole contest with twelve rebounds while also being a point shy a double-double with nine points.

Oswego’s next game is on Tuesday, November 30th vs the Cortland Red Dragons in the Max Ziel Gymnasium. Tip off is set for 7:30 PM.

Oswego State men’s hockey splits weekend in SUNYAC play

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team had another jam packed weekend with two conference games against Brockport and Geneseo. Heading into the games, Oswego was coming off a 2-1 win over the Cortland Red Dragons. The Lakers would extend their win streak Friday night on the road in Rochester at the Tuttle North Arena against the Golden Eagles. The Brockport team came into the contest with an overall record of 5-0 and receiving 24 votes in the USCHO Division III poll. Trent Grimshaw would strike first for the Lakers on the powerplay to give Oswego it’s first goal in the first period this season. The goal came 14:46 minutes into the period and was assisted by team points leader Connor Sleeth and defenseman Ben Addison. Oswego would add another power play goal in the second period off the stick of Rocco Andreacchi. The Lakers would complete the contest going 2/5 with the man advantage and Addison and Grimshaw would get credited with the assists on the goal. Brockport would answer during 4 on 4 hockey later in the period but would not be able to finish the comeback before the final buzzer sounded. Oswego netminder Steven Kozikoski would get the win in between the pipes and made 30 saves over the course of the contest.

The Lakers would head back to the Deborah F. Stanley Arena and set their sights on the number one ranked team in the nation, the Geneseo Ice Knights. These two teams faced off for the first time since the 2019-20 SUNYAC Championship game and Geneseo found themselves in a similar situation at the end of the contest. The Lakers would fall 6-1 to the Ice Knights, their fourth straight loss against the team. Geneseo would tally four goals in the first period, three of those against Kozikoski before the junior got pulled by head coach Ed Gosek. Eric Green would finish the contest for the Lakers. The junior goaltender also gave up three goals against making eight saves in between the pipes. The Lakers would win the shot battle 23 to 17 but would only be able to put one puck past Geneseo netminder Matt Petizian. Alex DiCarlo would ruin the shutout in the third period to find his third goal of the season.

After this weekend, Oswego remains towards the top of the SUNYAC conference with a record of 3-0-1-0-1 and 10 points. Geneseo remains at the top with 13 points and four wins and one tie. Plattsburgh State and Brockport along with Cortland all remain close behind the Lakers heading into Thanksgiving Break. Oswego will take this weekend off from conference play and head to Williamstown, Massachusetts to take on Williams College. Games are scheduled for Friday night and Saturday afternoon as the Lakers look to improve their overall record. Women’s hockey breaks winless streak with big win

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego women’s hockey team got an extra day of preparation and rest for Saturday afternoon’s matchup with Potsdam after Friday’s game got postponed that was supposed to be played against SUNY Canton. The Lakers came in on a three game winless streak, but they snapped that with a dominant 5-0 victory over the Bears for the Teddy Bear Toss game. The first Lakers goal came nine minutes into the first period on the power play, where a shot from Avery Webster would be saved, but the rebound fell to Morgan Shines who put it in the back of the net. The Lakers wouldn’t score again in the first period, but dominated the second period, putting it past the goalie three times. The second goal of the game was off of another rebound, the initial shot was by Megan Teachout, with Ariella Haas cleaning up for her first of three points in the game. Teachout scored the third goal, deking through defenders on a four on four to score a spectacular goal. The third goal of the period came on the power play again, with Mack Hull winning and putting away a scramble in front of the net. The Lakers defense proved their prowess in the second period, shutting down a 5 on 3 situation at one point, and goalie Joanna Hiebert stopping a 2 on 1 break away at another point. Oswego’s final goal came in the third period, on the power play again, Simone Bednarik scored with assists from Chyne Kennedy and Ariella Haas. The Lakers were dominant all game, winning the shot battle 53 to 7, and going 3-4 on the powerplay while keeping Potsdam to 0-5.

The Lakers next game comes against William Smith on Tuesday at the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. Coverage will start 6:45 p.m. on WTOP 10.

Oswego State women’s basketball picks up dominant non-conference win

OSWEGO N.Y. — Domination, decimation, good ole fashioned whoopin.  Just a few words to describe the Oswego State women’s basketball team and their incredible 75-39 victory over the SUNY Delhi Broncos. The Lakers are a very dangerous team and continued to prove this with their impressive performance Tuesday night, as they advanced to 2-1 on the season. Now on a two game winning streak, the Lakers are laser focused as they have an immense amount of potential this year. The freshman in particular balled out this game. For the second week in a row freshman Diamond Pickett led the Lakers in scoring with thirteen points, as well as an astonishing 16 rebounds. Pickett played well on both sides of the ball. Freshman Elania Johnson was right behind in scoring with twelve points. Two young ladies with extremely bright futures here in Oswego. Chastin Giles and Danielle Caivana also had impressive performances in this game. The Lakers were off to a lightning fast start, scoring twenty-five points in the first quarter compared to the Broncos ten. From there the defense went off holding the Broncos to just fourteen points in the second and third quarter. Outscoring the Broncos in all four quarters, this game was never close. Now it’s back to the office as the Lakers get ready for their next game. Oswego State looks to keep this win streak alive when they go on the road to face SUNY Poly at 5:00 p.m. in the SUNY Morrisville tournament this Friday.

Men’s basketball starts season with tournament win

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s basketball team competed in the Max Ziel Tournament this weekend. They played the first game on Friday night, beating Elmira College handily 85-51. They would play the second game on Saturday, winning the tournament in a closer contest against Hobart College 63-48.

Friday night’s game against Elmira started close. Oswego State led 6-4 after five minutes before a 10-0 run would help the grow a lead they wouldn’t give up. Another eight points from Laker senior guard Julien Crittendon gave Oswego a 25-6 lead with ten still to play in the first half. The first half would end 42-19 Oswego. Elmira had a more successful second half, scoring thirty-two points, but Oswego would score another forty-three of their own, for the final score of 85-51. Crittendon was the Lakers leading scorer with fifteen points, with freshman Ahkee Anderson the only other Laker with over ten points at twelve. Fourteen Lakers would score on the night. Anderson also contributed three assists. Junior guard Devin Green lead the team in rebounds with nine. Oswego shot 50.9% from the field on the night.

The second and final game of the tournament was against Hobart college. An opening three pointer from Hobart was answered by a 16-0 run by the Lakers over eight minutes. Fourteen of the Lakers sixteen came from junior guard Kaleb Cook and sophomore guard Jeremiah Sparks. The first half would end 35-20 Oswego. The Lakers pushed the lead to twenty-one early in the second half but Hobart would pull it back to eleven with three to play in the game. Oswego would play solid defense and hit their free throws to close out the game and win 63-48. Kaleb Cook led the Lakers with twenty-two points and Jeremiah Sparks had fifteen of his own. Senior center Louis Fedullo led the Laker with eight rebounds. Kaleb Cook was named tournament MVP and Julien Crittendon was named to the all-tournament team.

Oswego State plays Clarkson at 7:30 p.m. in the Max Ziel Gymnasium on Tuesday November, 16th. WTOP 10 will have coverage starting at 7:30 p.m.

Oswego women’s hockey suffers first two losses on back-to-back skid

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team lost their first two games of the season this weekend, falling to SUNY Cortland 2-1 on Friday and SUNY Plattsburgh 5-0 on Saturday. For the first time in 2021, the Lakers were held to a goal or less in back-to-back outings as they weren’t able to find a rhythm offensively.

Oswego went into Friday’s game versus Cortland undefeated, looking to continue their stellar start to the season. Sophomore forward Morgan Shines started the game off hot, scoring the teams lone goal at the 11:48 mark of the first period. The scored remained 1-0 until midway through the second period when the Red Dragons scored two unanswered goals. Although the Lakers outshot the Red Dragons 43-23 in the contest, they were unable to find the back of the net again. Bryn White finished the game with 21 total saves while Shines led the team in the faceoff circle going 15-7.

The offensive woes would continue in their next game against the #1 ranked division III women’s hockey team, the Plattsburgh Cardinals. The Lakers came out swinging in the first period, having multiple good looks in the offensive zones. The Cardinals defense became more poised as the game went on and held the Lakers scoreless throughout the contest, racking up 31 saves. Plattsburgh got on the board in the first period and then went on to score four unanswered goals throughout the remainder of the game. Plattsburgh, who held Buffalo State to 0-1 the on power play the night prior, continued their dominant run against Oswego, holding them to 0-4 on the night.

The Oswego State women’s hockey team is now 3-2-1 on the year and sit fifth place in the NEWHL. They’ll have the chance to rebound next weekend in a two-game homestand against SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam. Puck drop Friday night is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. Hockey Night in Oswego kicks off at 6:30 p.m. on WTOP 10!

Oswego State men’s hockey powers through Red Dragons

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team got their first victory on home ice Friday evening against the Cortland Red Dragons. The Lakers took the a 2-1 win to secure first place in the SUNYAC conference. The Red Dragons and Lakers came into the contest both number one in the standings with four points each. Tonight’s contest was Teal Night and Military Appreciation Night in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena to honor the late Mary Gosek and spread awareness for ovarian cancer.

The Lakers would find themselves in a similar situation in the first period after Cortland forward Trevor Veneklase buried one past netminder Steven Kozikoski on the lone power play of the contest. Captain Ethan Homitz would get credit with the assist as Cortland secured the lead eleven minutes and eighteen seconds into the period. Play would be back and forth the remainder of the stanza but Oswego would trail heading into the second period. So far this season, Oswego has been out scored 8-0 in the first twenty minutes of play.

Oswego would have an answer in the second period with a transition goal from Connor Sleeth assisted by captain Travis Broughman. Sleeth recorded his first goal in an Oswego uniform seven minutes and 23 seconds into the stanza. The two teams would trade shots back and fourth for the remainder of the period.

The third period featured Oswego outshooting Cortland fifteen to eight in the third period. Luca Durante would keep the Red Dragons in the contest until Oswego defenseman Troy Robillard grabbed the puck at the right point and shoot through traffic and tucked one in behind Durante with less than ten minutes remaining in regulation. The unassisted goal would be the game winner as the Lakers held on for their second conference win of the 2021-22 season.

The Lakers hold the lead in the SUNYAC with seven points and a conference record of 2-0-1. Brockport and Geneseo are tied in second with six points each. Cortland falls back to fourth with four points and a record of 1-2-0. After tonight’s contest, Oswego sets their sights on the Brockport Golden Eagles as the Lakers head on the road for another conference match up a week from now. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. in Brockport Friday, November 19th. WTOP 10 will continue to inform viewers on the men’s hockey team and their 2021-22 season.

Oswego State women’s basketball soar past Hawks in non-conference play

OSWEGO N.Y. — It was another day at the office for the Oswego State women’s basketball team. Last night, the Lakers hosted the Hilbert College Hawks in a non conference matchup. This game took place in the Max Ziel Gymnasium and it did not disappoint. The Lakers came out and handled business, winning with a final score of 72-58 as the team improves to 1-1 this season. The leading scorers for Oswego were freshman Diamond Pickett with fourteen, senior Danielle Caivana with fourteen, and sophomore Chastin Giles with eleven. The contest was close at the half with the Lakers leading only by four. The third quarter is where things took a turn for Hilbert as they only managed to drop five points, leading to the Lakers impressive victory. With this win the Lakers pick up momentum heading into their next matchup as they take on the SUNY-Delhi Broncos this Tuesday at the Max Ziel Gymnasium. Tip-Off is at 5:30 p.m. on WTOP 10!
