Hewitt Hall Set to Become New Communications Building
This spring, Hewitt Hall is expected to shut down in preparation for its renovation to become the new communications department building. This new space is set to give students more access to the tools they need.
The Chair of the Department of Communication Studies, Jessica Reeher, explains what is planned to be included in this new space. “The new building is going to house all of communications studies as a department, and as well as the Dean’s office for SCMA and the graphic design faculty component of the art department.”
The Hewitt building is home to many of SUNY Oswego’s departments, including the Department of Sustainability and the Department of Auxiliary Services. It also currently includes many counseling services, and the health center.
The renovated Hewitt building is expected to be a space for students to utilize 24 hours a day. Once the renovations are finished, this new space is set to include open areas for students to relax and eat.
There are also plans for team rooms where small groups can get together to work on projects or scripts. There will also be more studio spaces, more computer labs, and more opportunities for students to get ahold of the technology they need.
Reeher stated, “We envision this as a 24-hour building. So students can access if you need to get into the editing suite, if you need to get into a studio, you can get access to many of the facilities 24 hours.”
According to Reeher, once the space in Hewitt is up and running for the students, Lanigan hall will then move into a phase of renovation. All of the renovations happening are being done with the students in mind, so they are able to make the most of their time here at Oswego.
The renovation plans were made pre-COVID so the dates for opening the new building are subject to change. But, Reeher seems to have high hopes that the project will be completed and that the building will be open for students by spring 2024.

Faculty Art Exhibit

Last Friday, November 11 at 10:00 a.m., the Faculty Art Exhibit opened in Tyler Hall. According to Michael Flanagan, the director of the gallery, the Faculty Art Exhibition tradition has been around since the 1960’s.
The exhibit in Tyler Hall is filled with art created with various mediums, some art actually being interactive. Rebecca Mushtare created a piece based off Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story ‘The Yellow Wallpaper,’ entitled ‘After the Yellow Wallpaper,’ where gallery attendees are encouraged to touch her piece. Their body warmth or the use of a provided “hand warmer” packet on her piece creates an endothermic reaction on the thermochromic pigments on her top pattern. The reaction caused her top design to disappear, and allows a hidden design to surface.
On the exhibit as a whole, Mushtare stated, “I love the faculty exhibit we have each year because it reflects the diversity of our practices and a wide range of creative process and techniques. This exhibition gives students insights into their faculty as creative beings who practice what they teach and beyond what they teach.”
Besides giving students and the Oswego community the ability to see an art exhibit when there aren’t many around, Flanagan also thinks it’s a great way to bring together the faculty. “I think it builds a sense of comradery. Often, professors are so busy teaching and researching and also making art that sometimes we don’t get to do things together,” said Flanagan.
The 2016 Faculty Art Exhibit is free to the public and will be open until November 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:0 p.m., with the exception of Mondays and school holidays. After this gallery, Flanagan predicts there will be a total of three galleries this fall semester and four more galleries in the spring semester.

New Art pieces in Oswego
OSWEGO, N.Y. -If you’ve walked through the quad lately, you’ve seen that Oswego has new sculptures on campus. The set of sculptures were a response to renovation work that was being done on Tyler Hall. The sculptures range from large red spikes representing connection or lack thereof with earth, to a sculpture that animals can live in blurring the lines between humans and nature.
The six pieces aren’t just local art, two of them hail from North Carolina and the other four from all across New York state. The Lifestyles Center will be co-hosting an event with the Student Art Exhibit Committee on October 19. #CelebrateSculpture will be held in the quad featuring the artists who built the sculptures, who will answer questions and talk about their experiences.
The large red piece is titled Prince, by Fredrick Douglas Schatz. This work is meant to be a self portrait. He said that it was a comment on the harmony and lack of harmony between each person and the earth that we inhabit.
