OSWEGO, NY — This past Sunday, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) COVID-19 task force met once again to create a plan for the return of fall interscholastic athletics. The group has been reading over documents from the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) which has guidance and recommendations on this ever-changing situation, created by the COVID-19 pandemic. This group has met five times so far and plans to release a comprehensive document containing information for schools across the state, which will be released this Friday, September 4th.
The newest news to come from the NYSPHSAA is the change to push the start date of the winter sports season from November 16th to November 30th. The association did this to allot time to schools and sections to complete this condensed fall athletic season. Currently, only low risk to moderate risk fall sports will be allowed to compete against other schools in their section. Football and Volleyball will be allowed to practice but cannot play due to the sports being categorized as both high risk sports. Oswego womens hockey sweeps Morrisville this weekend
OSWEGO, N.Y. – It was a great way for the lakers to get back on track this weekend as they added two big SUNYAC victories to their record. The Lakers first faced the Mustangs in Morrisville where it was almost all Lakers from start to finish. After a scoreless first period for the Lakers Ashlyn Mcgrath scored two minutes into the second period. The lakers kept heavy pressure throughout the second period outshooting the Mustings 25-13. Mia Conboy tacked on another Lakers goal in the second scoring her first of the season. Morrisville was able to score at the end of the second but it was too late as the lakers momentum was not going to be stopped. In the third period sophomore Ashlyn Mcgrath scored her fourth goal of the season and second of the contest for the Lakers. A late goal by Mack Hull sealed the 4-1 win for the Lakers. The Mustangs had a chance at redemption the following day.The Lakers had a rematch against the mustangs this past Saturday this time in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. This was another fantastic performance from the Lakers as they skated to another 4-1 victory. Another scoreless first period made the Lakers hungry to get on the board in the second. After a missed power play opportunity shortly into the second Amanda Zenstein scored her first goal of the season and the first goal of the game for the Lakers. The Mustangs would answer right back scoring their only goal of the game in the second. After having an amazing performance the day before, Ashlyn Mcgrath added to her weekend resume with another goal to put the Lakers up by two. Taylor Hudon would then put another goal on on the board for the Lakers. As if three goals on the weekend wasn’t enough, Ashlyn Mcgrath would score her fourth goal of the weekend and second of the game for the Lakers. Mcgrath has been a tremendous asset to this Lakers team and continues to prove her importance. The Lakers gained some needed momentum this weekend and look to keep it rolling as they take on the the Cortland Red Dragons this Friday in the Deb. Catch it live on WTOP10!

Field Hockey wins in big second half attack
OSWEGO N.Y- The Oswego Field hockey team hosted the Utica Pioneers on Tuesday afternoon. The Lakers started the game dominating in time of possession over utica in the first 5 minutes. Oswego struck first off the stick of Kacie Simzer 14:37 into the contest which would be the only goal of the quarter leaving the score 1-0. To start the second period the Lakers held the momentum they had with multiple penalty corners and 4 shots at goal but couldn’t get anything to go. Utica turned their great defense into offense and at 18:47 Mackenzie Mix got the Pioneers on the board to tie the game. No one else could get anything to go and it stayed tied at 1-1 after 2 periods.
Oswego came out firing to start the 3rd with three shots in the first 1:36 and they got one to fall coming from senior Kaitlyn Jordan. Oswego was able to capitalize over a couple yellow cards by Utica and Jordan was able to score her second goal of the game to bring the Oswego lead to 3-1. Kacie Simzer then netted the 4th goal for the Lakers with 9th seconds left in the third for a 4-1 lead. The real story of the game was the defense by Oswego not allowing any shots on goal in the second half giving the Lakers a 4-1 win. The Lakers all together ended with 10 shots on goal and Erica Scheblein kept up her great season with two saves and only one goal allowed.
Oswego will be back home in a SUNYAC matchup against Oneonta on Saturday, October 1st at 4:00 PM.

Lakers Show Out for Family and Friends Weekend
OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State Lakers faced off against the St. John Fisher Cardinals in their first game of the 2025-2026 season during an exhibition match last night. The Lakers were looking to pick up right where they left off after being named the 2024-2025 SUNYAC champions. The Cardinals were coming in with a slightly different goal…to finish their first-ever game in program history. The difference in experience showed early on with the Lakers scoring just 3:30 seconds into the game after Junior defenseman Travis Baker rocketed a one-timer from the point.
This dominance continued for the rest of the 1st period, with the Lakers collecting 4 more goals to make the score 5-1 at the start of the first intermission. The pre-game jitters for the Lakers seemed to carry into the second period, with two early back-to-back goals putting the Cardinals into a 7-1 deficit. This early deficit resulted in the Cardinals pulling out Marcus Oulette for freshman Sebastian Woods. This substitution proved beneficial for the Cardinals as the Lakers were unable to get a puck in the back of the net for the rest of the second period, resulting in a 7-2 score.
Heading into the third period, the Cardinals looked like a completely different team compared to the first period. The team gelled together in real time during the game, taking massive strides in terms of their chemistry and playcalling. This resulted in holding the Lakers to just one goal in the third period while scoring one more of their own, resulting in the final score being 8-3 Lakers.
The Lakers showed out in their 8-3 win for Family and Friends Weekend while the Cardinals lost their first game in program history. The Oswego State Lakers will look to face off against the Nazareth Golden Flyers on October 25th at 7:00 PM in their final exhibition match, as the St. John Fisher Cardinals will face off against the Buffalo State Bengals on October 31st at 7:00 PM.
