The women’s basketball team was looking for its first win of the season tonight against the Canton Kangaroos. The Lakers were successful in winning the game 71-46.
At the end of the first quarter, the Lakers were only up 13-9. Going into the half, the Lakers increased the lead to 43-22. The Lakers defense only allowed three points to be given up during the second half.
Four Lakers including, senior Heather Hebert had points in the double digits. Hebert had 17 points and did not miss any of her eight free throws. Mary Mazzella had 12 points and four rebounds. Courtney Ameele had 11 points and Zana Dillard had 10.
Canton had 46 rebounds compared to Oswego’s 35 but still turned the ball over 24 times. The Laker defense had 14 steals.
Oswego will play its first SUNYAC game on Saturday at 3 against the Cortland Red Dragons.

WTOP HD Upgrade Blog
Hello future, current, and former ‘Toppers! Everyone here at WTOP hopes that you will enjoy our series of blog posts over the upcoming weeks. We will be giving you updates throughout the semester on our HD upgrade. Buckle up folks, it’s gonna be a fun ride!
Getting right into it- as many of you know over the summer we started our transition to high definition. So what exactly does this mean? Well, it means we are getting an infrastructure and equipment upgrade. This allows us to go from standard definition to high definition. We will be getting new HD cameras, a new Ross Xpression graphics system, Ross Carbonite 2ME switcher, along with new playout and automation servers. Eventually we will add a sliding door area in the control room in order to create a separate audio area for our A1.
Aside from that, we will also have wireless microphones and wireless IFB’s. All of this will mix with our new WSI meteorology graphics that were purchased last year.
General Manager, Justin Dobrow says this upgrade will benefit students that come through WTOP’s doors for years to come. “It [the upgrade] adds industry standard high definition equipment that really will improve our production quality and proficiency. That will follow ‘Toppers for years to come as they go on their journey”.
Dobrow also couldn’t help but comment on the remarkable situation that he encountered during the upgrade process. “One unique aspect of the HD upgrade is that a former GM (Peter Kurys, ‘98) who works for our integrator (the people who are designing and building our upgrade) was a previous GM of WTOP!”, he exclaimed.
One barrier that comes with the upgrade is that members have to learn all of the new equipment being installed. Installers will be running a training course to teach management how to use all of the new technology before everyone else get to start using it. None the less, it will be a transition for everyone; one that Dobrow does not see a problem with. “I believe the transition will take some getting used to, I don’t think we will struggle learning the new equipment. In our industry we need to be able to adapt to changing technology, and this gives us a chance to really hone in on those skills”, said Dobrow.
On September 12, 2016 we held our general interest meeting. The crowd got a chance to hear a little bit about how the HD upgrade was going to affect the production schedule. Public Relations Manager, Arielle Schunk says she doesn’t think the delay in production will affect involvement in the slightest. “After such a huge turnout at the general interest meeting on September 12th, I can already see how great of a semester it’s going to be even though we are starting productions a little late”. The turnout for the General Interest meeting was one of the biggest yet, filling the auditorium with over 220 toppers.
We would like to thank the Oswego Alumni Association, the Student Association of Oswego and all of the generous alumni who have helped to fund our transition to HD! In addition, we want to thank the support we’ve gotten from all of the faculty and administration during this whole process.

Fall foliage peaks at SUNY Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y– Autumn is considered by some people as one of the most beautiful times of the year because of leaves changing, and the peak of Fall is here in Oswego. Strong leaf colors are being expected for several sections of Jefferson, St. Lawrence and Oswego counties this week.
According to I Love NY.com, the Thousand Islands-Seaway region of New York, which includes Oswego County, will experience 80 to nearly 100 percent leaf color change this week. This means that oak, maple, and sweetgum trees will be bright shades of red, yellow and orange while fewer areas of muted green, orange and purple remain.
For the students of SUNY Oswego, this color change of foliage brings about many opportunities to explore all of the beauty the campus has to offer. SUNY Oswego’s outdoor club takes trips in the fall to view the leaves changing colors, which peak at different times around the state.
“The adirondacks start first so we got a jump start a few weeks ago in the adirondacks to see the peak. Now it’s in the central New York region, [so we] kind of just drift with the leaves to chase the peak colors for the best hikes for our club members,” Meteorology student and co-president of SUNY Oswego’s Outdoor’s club Zach Butler said.
Rice Creek Field Station also offers opportunities to watch the change in seasons. Rice Creek has trails that are open during daylight hours that can be used for viewing the changing of the leaves in the fall. Student’s can also educate themselves on the ecosystem of Rice Creek at the field station’s wildlife exhibit.
Other areas of New York, such as Long island, are still in their midpoint of color change and are expected to reach their peak later in the month.

Zully Ramirez Visits SUNY Oswego
OSWEGO, NY— Earlier this week, students had the opportunity of meeting and speaking with Zully Ramirez. She is currently an investigative news reporter at Chicago Telemundo. The event was hosted by the PRSSA here at SUNY Oswego and was open to the general public.
Zully Ramirez originally hails from Guatemala, but she moved to Harlem, NY at a young age. Many students were intrigued by her success story and her honesty about being an investigative news reporter.
After the event, I had the opportunity of interviewing Zully Ramirez and asked her what she would tell present and future students of SUNY Oswego. Her response was, “I would just say persevere. Persevere, listen to advice and put your heart and soul into everything that you do. Because when you persevere and listen to advice, and put your heart and soul into everything that you do, you can make it.”
