OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team took a road trip to the Midwest this weekend. The first game of the trip came against Adrian College in Michigan. Adrian College was undefeated in their last season before Covid stopped their chances at the national title. The Lakers would start the season hot with a 2-1 victory. The first period would see the Lakers get off six shots on target and Adrian have seven, but the period would end 0-0. Megan Teachout would open the scoring for the Lakers in the second period with an unassisted goal. Teachout would get the Lakers second goal of the night in the third period. The goal, assisted by Chyne Kennedy, would come on a power play. Adrian would score with less than a minute to go in the game to make it 2-1. Oswego Goalie Joanna Hiebert had a spectacular night in goal, recording 31 saves on 32 shots.
The second game of the weekend came against Trine University in Indiana. This was the first matchup between the two teams. The game wouldn’t start as well for the Lakers, as Trine scored half way into the first period with a power play goal to give them a 1-0 lead. The Lakers got on the scoreboard in the second period. A goal by Amanda Zenstein assisted by Philomena Teggart seven minutes into the second period would put momentum on the Lakers side. Megan Teachout got Oswego’s second goal of the night and her third on the weekend to make the game 2-1 Lakers in the third. Rachel Corbett had a good day in the face-off circle winning seven of her eight draws. Lakers goaltender Bryn White had sixteen total saves and one goal against in the victory.
The Lakers next game comes against Buffalo State at home on Saturday, November 6 at 3 p.m. where they open conference play in the NEWHL. Coverage will start on WTOP 10 at 2:30 p.m. with the pregame show streaming on wtop10.com/live and twitch.tv/wtop10tv.

Lakers field hockey suffer first loss on the road
CANTON, N.Y. – The Lakers end their undefeated start with a 1-0 loss to the St. Lawrence Saints on Saturday afternoon. Both teams had great defensive starts with no team budging in the first 20 minutes. After a quiet first quarter St. Lawrence finally had a breakthrough 23:07 in the second when forward Anna Coyne weaved her way through the lakers defense to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Oswego tried to fight back in the third quarter behind a 5-1 edge in shots, but St. Lawrence played great defense and dominated possesion in the 4th and the lakers could not break through. St. Lawrence dominated possession for most of the game with 19 shots on goal compared to the Lakers’ nine and dominated on penalty corners 14-2. Lakers goalie Erica Scheblein ended with a game leading 15 saves on the day.The Lakers are now 5-1 and will next host the University of Rochester on the Laker Turf Field Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the program’s annual Teal Game.

Oswego State women’s basketball concludes 2021-22 season celebrating two seniors
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s basketball team concluded the 2021-22 season last weekend, honoring seniors Danielle Caivana and Raiven Encarnacion in the process. The Lakers fell to SUNY Brockport 56-55 on Friday and Fredonia 68-60 on Saturday, bringing their season record to 5-19. In their second matchup of the season, the Lakers and Golden Eagles played a hard fought game from start to finish. After the opening tip, Brockport took an early 8-6 lead before the Lakers went on a 14-2 run. With 2:42 left in the first quarter, Oswego led 20-10. Danielle Caivana scored nine points in the quarter, shooting 3-3 from behind the arc. Heading into the second frame, Brockport stormed back to knot the game up at 20. However, eight points from Logan Castiglione helped the Lakers regain the lead and go into the half up 37-25. After a back-and-forth third quarter, Brockport brought the deficit to seven entering the final ten minutes. The Golden Eagles continued to fight down the stretch and pulled the game within two points with just over a minute remaining in regulation. Castiglione, who was great defensively in this game, came up with a clutch steal to maintain the Oswego lead with 30 seconds remaining. After some scrappy play, an Oswego foul put Brockport on the free throw line down just one point. The Golden Eagles nailed both free throws to take their first lead since the opening quarter. The Lakers got a last-second shot off in time, but it would fall short, giving Brockport the victory. Shania Iglesias finished the contest with 16 points while Caivana (15) and Castiglione (10) both scored double-digit points.
Before the tip-off of Saturday’s senior night game, Oswego celebrated Caivana and Encarnacion for their accomplishments with the team. Both teams exchanged a flurry of baskets throughout the first quarter, with Fredonia up 18-16 heading into the second. The Lakers quickly took their first lead of the game off a Diamond Pickett three-point shot. The Blue Devils and Lakers went shot-for-shot throughout the frame, with Fredonia escaping the the quarter up 32-27. To begin the second half, Fredonia went on a small scoring run. Though, Encarnacion scored two buckets and a free throw to bring the deficit to five. Despite Oswego’s persistence, Fredonia went into the final quarter with a nine point lead. The Lakers would bring the game within six points with 30 seconds remaining, but it was too little, too late for the home team. Diamond Pickett finished with her fifth double-double of the season, putting up 19 points, 16 boards, three assists, and three steals. Encarnacion and Caivana combined for 25 points in their final game as Lakers. With this win, the Blue Devils clinched the sixth and final playoff berth in the SUNYAC Championship.
Although it wasn’t the outcome the team was hoping for, the Lakers have a bright future lead by their young star athletes. Oswego saw major contributions from the likes of Catie Lilly, Chastin Giles, and Diamond Pickett throughout the course of the season and will look to build upon their performances from this season. The team will reload in the offseason and look towards the 2022-23 season, where they hope to make it back to the SUNYAC playoffs once again.

Mens Baseball Sweeps Fredonia in Weekend Action
ROCHESTER, NY – It was a successful weekend for the Lakers as they convincingly beat the Fredonia Blue Devils in both of their encounters this weekend. Game won was nothing short of a blowout that saw the Lakers dominate Fredonia with a final score of 12-1. The momentum was in favor of the Lakers from the start as they truly dominated this game. Fredonia would score their only run of the game in the top of the second inning. Senior Colin Williams was on fire this game as he finished with one run and two RBI’s. It really was a team effort however as the Lakers were firing on all cylinders from start to finish. The Lakers looked to take this momentum into the next day where they had a rematch against the Blue Devils.The Lakers kept the momentum rolling the next day when they knocked off Fredonia for the second time. This game was a lot closer and saw both teams fighting hard for a victory. The Lakers started off hot scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Blue Devils weren’t going to let history repeat itself as they bounced right back tying the game in the third. The Lakers then went on to score three more runs and the game looked like it was shaping up to be another Lakers victory. Fredonia was not done however as they came right back and scored three more runs to tie the game at six. After this the game got out of hand with the Lakers completely taking over. Freshman Emil Sander would score the Lakers final run to give them a five run victory as the Lakers completed the weekend sweep. The Lakers look to keep this momentum rolling as they head to New Paltz this Friday at 3pm.
