OSWEGO — Women’s Soccer finished their 2019 season this weekend against two strong SUNYAC conference teams. The Lakers started their final home stand versus Fredonia on Friday that ended in a 2-1 victory for the Blue Devils. However, sophomore Maggie Riordan would score the lone goal for Oswego just over five minutes into the game from a Graisa Madden pass. Fredonia would later get two past goalkeeper Sophia Portalatin, one coming before the end of the half and the second immediately at the start of the next half. Portalatin would rebound the following day against Buffalo State with a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory, the first SUNYAC win of the season. Lynsey Roth would snag two goals in the match up, one on a Penalty Kick and her second off the pass from freshman Katharine Balog. The team did not qualify for the SUNYAC championships, and finished their campaign with an overall record of 3-14.

Oswego State Baseball Heads into SUNYAC Championship
OSWEGO, N.Y. — SUNYAC Baseball playoffs kick off Saturday, May 15th as Oswego hosts Oneonta and Brockport goes on the road to take on Cortland. Games are scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday with a if necessary game three slated for 12:00 on Sunday, May 16th.
Cortland comes in as the number one overall seed and ranked 22nd in the country, at 14-2 as the nationally ranked Red Dragons look for their 35th conference championship. Scott Giordano leads the Cortland offense with a .455 batting average, four home runs, and 25 RBIs, the first two stats rank 3rd and the third stat ranks 5th in the SUNYAC. Former SUNYAC Baseball Athlete of the Week Daniel Coleman has four home runs to his name as well to go along with 26 RBIs which is good for 4th in the conference. Cortland also touts the three lowest ERAs in the SUNYAC, Ryan Flansburg leads with a 0.93 ERA in 29 innings, former SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week Zack Durant comes in with a 2.18 ERA in 29 innings, and Brandon Buchan carries a 2.20 ERA in 28.2 innings of work. Cortland met their first round opponent, Brockport back on May 3rd in the regular season. Brockport took game one 9-4 and Cortland took game two 9-1.
Brockport faces Cortland in the first round as the second seed in the West division, as the Golden Eagles have a 12-4 SUNYAC record. Brockport has two hitters in the top five for batting average in the SUNYAC, former SUNYAC Baseball Athlete of the Week Matt O’Dair led all hitters in the regular season with a .478 and Daniel Delgazio is 5th with a .423 average. Brockport has hitters in 1st and 5th in another hitting category, as Tom Kretzler led all hitters with eight home runs, and Jake Sisto had four long balls of his own. On the mound, former SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week Trevor McCarthy is 2nd in the SUNYAC in strikeouts with 37, and Andrew Huffman is 5th in the stat with 33 punchouts. Brockport goes on the road to take on Cortland with the winner in the two of three series advancing to the SUNYAC championship.
Oswego hosts the other first round matchup, as the first seed in the West and 21st nationally ranked Lakers come in with a 14-2 regular season record. Oswego is looking to win their 16th SUNYAC title as well as their fourth consecutive. Paul Tammaro in the leadoff spot has a .444 batting average which is good for 4th in the SUNYAC. The top three RBI leaders in the SUNYAC are also in the Oswego order in the form of Kyle Lauria, Ryan Enos, and Ryan Weiss who have 38, 34, and 31 RBIs apiece. Brendon Frank and Lauria are tied for 1st in the conference in stolen bases with 18 each, and Enos ranks 4th with 12 as all three former SUNYAC Baseball Athlete of the Week winners are threats both at the plate and on the basepaths. On the mound, former SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week Kieran Finnegan ranks 5th in the conference in ERA with a 2.40 in 30 innings of work. Oswego faced first round opponent Oneonta on May 6th in the regular season. Oswego took game one 19-5 and Oneonta won game two 5-2.
Oneonta goes on the road to take on Oswego in the first round as the second seed in the East, the Red Dragons have the only losing record of any of the four playoff teams with their 6-10 SUNYAC record. The biggest strength for Oneonta is their two headed monster on the mound in the form of Michael Losak and Sean Liquori. Losak is 4th in ERA in the SUNYAC with a 2.30 through 27.1 innings, and the duo is 3rd and 4th in strikeouts in the conference with 35 and 34.
SUNYAC Baseball playoffs start Saturday, May 15th at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. as Cortland hosts Brockport and Oswego hosts Oneonta. If Cortland wins they will host the championship the following weekend, if Cortland loses but Oswego wins then Oswego will host, if both teams lose then Brockport will host the championship. Oswego State men’s hockey returns with loss to Utica
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team took the ice in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena on Saturday night for an exhibition game against the Utica College Pioneers. The Lakers fell 6-4 after the Pioneers scored four unanswered between the second and third periods. This was the first game back for the Lakers after missing out on the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19. Utica would have the lead after the first period but goals from Alex DiCarlo and Jared Nash put Oswego ahead a little over half way through the contest. The Pioneers would come back with two powerplay goals on netminder Eric Green and another to round out the stanza. Each team would bury another goal in the third period as the Lakers did not have enough to mount a comeback in the closing minutes of the contest.
Men’s hockey will host SUNY Canton for their second and final exhibition game of the season on Saturday, October 23rd at 7:00 p.m. in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. WTOP 10 will start coverage at 6:30 p.m. with Hockey Night in Oswego streaming on wtop10.com/live and twitch.tv/wtop10tv

Men’s Hockey Season Recap after SUNYAC run
GENESEO, NY — The Men’s Hockey team will head to Geneseo this weekend to battle for the SUNYAC Championship. The 16-9-1 Lakers have had an up and down season up to this point, as the group now is on a five-game winning streak fresh of a victory over rivals Plattsburgh. Oswego’s season started back on October 19th with an exhibition game against Carleton Place, then against Nazareth, both wins for the Lakers. The group would head into the regular season and secure four conference wins in a homestand at the Marano Campus Center that would give them first place in the SUNYAC standings.
One turning point in the season came from a road trip to Geneseo, to face a nationally ranked team in the same barn that Oswego lost the SUNYAC Championship in last season. The Lakers would fall apart and lose 9-1 as multiple Lakers would be tossed from the game and miss their next matchup against Hobart. This game would be the start of a three-game losing streak against nationally ranked teams, Hobart and Salve Regina in the Utica Thanksgiving Tournament. Oswego would turn it around on that Saturday in Utica against Plymouth State to give the Lakers hope as the team continued into the last week of the first half of the season. The Lakers would head on the road and swept the Buffalo teams in the conference to finish 7-3 in the first semester.
Oswego would come back from Christmas Break to play in the annual Pathfinder Bank/Oswego State Classic in which the team would first face off against Saint Mary’s. The defending champs would fall to the mid-west team 1-0 and face UNE the following day and also lose 4-3 to start the new year off on the wrong foot. This losing streak would continue against two more nationally ranked teams in the month of January as Utica and Elmira defeated the Lakers in the Marano Campus Center. The Lakers would not defeat any nationally ranked team this season as the group would go 0-6 against those teams, one of the biggest eyesores of the 2019-2020 season.
After losing to Cortland in overtime, Steven Kozikoski, the sophomore netminder that has not played in a regular season game for the Lakers, got his shot in between the pipes as both senior goalies David Richer and Cedric Hansen were not playing their best games. Kozikoski’s first start was against Canton, a team Oswego has figured out the past few seasons. The Lakers took a commanding win in the Marano Campus Center as the group defeated Canton 8-2 and was one of the turning points that occurred in the second half of the season. The new netminder would go 5-1-1 in net and win his first playoff game for the Lakers this past Tuesday.
The group secured the second seed in the standings with their success in the second semester and faced Plattsburgh on home ice. The team would defeat their rivals 4-1 and move on to Geneseo. The Lakers season once again would end in Geneseo as the Ice Knights defeated Oswego 4-1 in the SUNYAC finals. This would be the second time Oswego would not be able to get it done in the finals while being held at Geneseo. The Lakers would finish 16-10-1 to end the season as the group looks to rebuild as 13 seniors will move on from the program. Moving forward, Oswego looks to rebuild around players like Alex DiCarlo, Travis Broughman, and Steven Kozikoski heading into these next few years as these three players are all underclassmen.
