OSWEGO — Women’s Soccer finished their 2019 season this weekend against two strong SUNYAC conference teams. The Lakers started their final home stand versus Fredonia on Friday that ended in a 2-1 victory for the Blue Devils. However, sophomore Maggie Riordan would score the lone goal for Oswego just over five minutes into the game from a Graisa Madden pass. Fredonia would later get two past goalkeeper Sophia Portalatin, one coming before the end of the half and the second immediately at the start of the next half. Portalatin would rebound the following day against Buffalo State with a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory, the first SUNYAC win of the season. Lynsey Roth would snag two goals in the match up, one on a Penalty Kick and her second off the pass from freshman Katharine Balog. The team did not qualify for the SUNYAC championships, and finished their campaign with an overall record of 3-14.

Oswego State Baseball Splits with Oneonta in SUNYAC Crossover
ONEONTA, N.Y. — The Oswego State Lakers baseball team traveled to Oneonta thursday for a doubleheader SUNYAC crossover matchup against the Red Dragons. Oswego would only be able to secure one of the possible two wins today by taking the first game in dominant fashion by a score of 19-5 but then falling in the second game 5-2.
In the first game it was all Lakers as they were up 6-3 after three innings and up 8-3 after four. Oswego’s bats would continue to remain hot by propelling 6 runs in the seventh inning to put them up 17-5. Led by senior Ryan Enos he was able to hit for a pair of doubles and a home run. However not only the upperclassmen came out to shine in the first game, freshman Jacob Levine was able to provide 4 RBI’s for Oswego as well. Moving on to the second game Oneonta was able to edge the lakers by a score of 5-2. Oswego would not have the hot offense in this matchup only generating 2 runs in seven innings as well as only 5 hits. The Red Dragons were able to jump off early by getting three runs in the first three innings including two individual home runs in the third. Brandon Frank and Julian Drew were the only Lakers to generate RBI’s. Looking on the other end at the mound, Oneonta senior pitcher Michael Losak was able to steal the show and throw 120 pitches in a complete game to carry them to the win.
Oneonta now sits at 11-9 overall this season with the split and 6-8 in the SUNYAC East division and currently are in second . The team looks forward to Saturday for a doubleheader against another west division foe in the Brockport Golden Eagles with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. As for the Lakers, they have now gone 2-2 in their last 4 to move to 19-3 overall and 12-2 in the SUNYAC and secure the first place seed in the West division. They will look to bounce back on track with a double header on Saturday as well against an East division opponent in the Plattsburgh Cardinals who have not won in Oswego since 2014. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. for the first game and approximately 3:00 p.m. for the 2nd game. Both games will be played at the Laker Baseball Field.

Lakers Field Hockey shutout at home
OSWEGO N.Y- The Oswego Women’s Field Hockey team took on the University of Rochester Yellow Jackets in a non-conference contest Tuesday evening and were shutout 2-0. Both goals happened early in the first quarter when Rochester’sAnya Arseneau scored directly 1 minute into game and almost 3 minutes later Maeve Fogarty scored the second and final goal of the game. The Lakers tried to play catch up for the rest of the game and in the second quarter Oswego put on the pressure putting multiple shots on goal and earning two penalty corners to finish the half.
The third quarter started with two yellow cards for the Lakers just five minutes in and the defense held the Yellow Jackets to nothing while fighting off the two and five minute penalties. But the Lakers couldn’t fight their way back as the Yellow Jackets got back into rhythm in the fourth quarter holding possession for the majority of it. Rochester ended the contest with a 19-4 shots advantage on the Lakers and also had 7 penalty corners to the Lakers 3. Scheblein finished the contest with 12 saves on 14 shots faced in the contest marking 27 saves in the last two contests for the Oswego senior goalkeeper.
Oswego will now head on the road for a SUNYAC matchup against the New Paltz Hawks. This game is set to start at 1:00PM on Saturday, September 24.

Field hockey Loses in OT thriller
OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Lakers faced their SUNYAC foe Oneonta Red Dragons in a defensive battle on Saturday afternoon. Both defenses dominated in the first half where neither team could get a shot on goal. Oswego could only get 3 shots altogether in the first half with 2 from Kaitlyn Mastracco and one coming from Molly Darcy.
The second half started out the same with 3 minutes of no shots from both sides. That was until 3 minutes into the 3rd period sophomore Bryleigh Beauchat had her first shot blocked by Oneonta goalkeeper Jennifer Tumino, Beauchat was then able to get possession of the ball back off the save and knock it into the back of the goal for her first collegiate goal and a 1-0 Lakers lead. The Dragons were able to get their first penalty corner of the game 2 minutes later and took advantage of it off the stick of Carly Waszczak who tied the game at one. The Lakers had a chance in the fourth to pull away from the Red Dragons but failed to capitalize off of three back to back penalty corners. After another strong defensive performance from both sides in the 4th the game moved on to overtime in a 1-1 tied battle.
The Red Dragons found a spark in the first overtime, getting five shots on goal. But Erica Scheblein was a force to be reckoned with on a day where she ended with a game leading 5 saves. The Lakers had a chance early into the first overtime with a penalty corner that missed just wide left from Mastracco and brought this game to a second overtime. The Red Dragons decided to continue their fast paced offense in the second overtime and they capitalized 3 minutes in off a goal by Morgan Fleming to win the contest 2-1.
The Lakers now move to 0-3 in SUNYAC play and 6-5 altogether on the season. Oswego will now travel east to St. John Fisher University on Tuesday October 4th for their next matchup.
