OSWEGO — The SUNYAC Conference has selected Oswego State Men’s Soccer team goalie Brian Terra as the Defensive Player of the Week. Terra finished with five saves as the Lakers snapped a 5-game losing streak to lift the Lakers to a 1-0 win over Potsdam last Saturday. This shutout would staple Terra’s second shutout of the season, with his first being against Utica College and his fourth overall. Terra and the Lakers return to the Turf at 4 p.m. on Friday as they host the Buff. St. on Oct. 12.

Oswego State men’s hockey snags win in dominating fashion
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team continued their win streak on Friday night against the Buffalo State Bengals. The Lakers extended their win streak to two after a dominating 5-0 win on home ice. Oswego State is now with 10-4-1 after the SUNYAC victory and improves to 4-3-0 in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. The Lakers also move up the conference standings posting sixteen points and slotting in at third place behind Geneseo and Cortland.
Oswego State got off to a hot start when defenseman Ryan Bunka walked in from the point to put the first Oswego State goal in the back of the net. The Lakers were just two minutes into the contest and the tally was assisted by captain Travis Broughman and forward Connor Sleeth. That would be the lone goal of the period before a hot second period that featured Oswego State netting three more goals. Tristan Francis secured his first career goal as an Oswego State Laker after a pass from Broughman. Eight seconds later, Jackson Arcan was fed a pass from Ryan Dickinson off the faceoff and buried the third goal of the contest. Francis would get the secondary assist and finish the contest with a goal and assist. The final goal of the period came from Shane Bull on the rush as the sophomore popped the bottle and got his second goal of the season. Alternate captain Josh LeBlanc and Conor Smart would get credited with the assists. In the third stanza, the Lakers would put the cherry on top with a tally from Quinn Warmuth. The defenseman secured his second goal of the 2021-22 season. Broughman and Sleeth would get the assists and the captain would finish with three assists to end the conference matchup. In between the pipes, Lakers netminder Steven Kozikoski would get the win after staying perfect and making thirty-five saves. His season stats improve to a 1.73 goals against average and a .939 save percentage after starting in net for ten total contests.
Oswego State now looks ahead to whiteout weekend as the Lakers welcome SUNY Potsdam and Plattsburgh State for two SUNYAC contests. The Lakers finish their homestand this weekend as Potsdam faces off against Oswego State Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. On Saturday, the rivalry game is set for a 7:00 p.m. puck drop as the Cardinals of Plattsburgh State travel to Oswego. WTOP 10 will be live Friday night at 6:30 p.m. and then at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday for a special hour long pre-game show from the Perch inside the Marano Campus Center. WTOP 10 will continue to provide coverage of the Oswego State men’s hockey team and the group heads into the second half of their 2021-22 season.

Oswego women’s basketball suffers two point loss to Geneseo
GENESEO, N.Y. — It was a true fight to the finish for the Oswego State women’s basketball team against Geneseo. The Lakers went to battle against SUNY Geneseo and this matchup did not disappoint. It was a fight back and forth until ultimately one layup decided the contest with a final score of 49-51. This game was neck and neck until the very end. After the first quarter Geneseo had the momentum up seven points. The Lakers refused to go down this early however, going on a twelve to four run in the second putting them up two points at the half. Freshman Shania Iglesias scored twelve points with six coming from the three point line. Senior Logan Castiglione also had an impressive performance with nine points. Both Oswego and Geneseo put up sixteen points in the third leaving this game up for grabs in the final quarter. One key steal by Geneseo put them up by two in the final seconds of the contest to give them the win. Despite this tough loss the Lakers recorded an impressive sixteen turnovers. The Lakers face Oneonta in a SUNYAC matchup this Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the Max Ziel Gymnasium. Check it out live on WTOP 10!

Simzer shines as Lakers take down Keystone
LA PLUME, P.A. — The Lakers stay undefeated as they routed Keystone College 5-1. 13 seconds into the contest Senior Kacie Simzer scored the first goal of the game for the Lakers with Kaitlyn Ahle assisting. The Lakers were tested early as they faced a situation that they have not been in all year which was a team scoring a goal, effectively ending their four game streak of not allowing a single goal. It took the Lakers only one minute and 11 seconds to score another goal as Simzer scored her second of the game. The rest of the second quarter was a defensive battle where both Oswego and Keystone combined for three penalty corner kicks and four goals. Goalie Erica Scheblein was given her first test of the year and she was ready for the challenge. After giving up a goal early in the game, Scheblein had blocked five shots from the 36:08 to the 43:21 mark. She finished the game with nine total saves, which is almost half of her season’s total. Oswego adjusted in every quarter of the game as within one minute and 20 seconds of the second half beginning Kailtyn Mastracco scored for the Lakers off of a penalty shot.
After Keystone changed goalies during the fourth quarter, Simzer tested if their new goalie was up to the task. Simzer tied the all-time record for goals in a game for the Lakers as she finished the day with four goals. Oswego finished the day with 21 shots on goal. Throughout the game, the Lakers took advantage of Keystone penalties as they had ten penalty corner kicks.
This marks the first time the Lakers have started 5-0 since the 2016-2017 season. The Lakers travel north to take on the St. Lawrence Saints on Saturday, September 17th at 1:00 PM at North Country Field.
