Oswego State’s women’s ice hockey team began their season with a 4-3 overtime exhibition loss against the Toronto Midget Aeros on Saturday. The Lakers’ first regular season action will come on Friday when they face New England College in the Marano Campus Center Ice Arena.

During the first period, there was not much action between these two teams until Toronto’s Claudia Yu got the Midget Aeros on the board. Oswego would have an answer though, as they stormed back with two goals in the following period. At the center of those two scores was Jean-marie Padden who had a goal and an assist. That would not be all from her as she tallied another assist in the third period. The normal three periods would not be enough for this game though as it went into overtime, largely because of Toronto’s ability to capitalize on the power play. However, there would not be much extra hockey as the Midget Aeros were able to score the game winner just 57 seconds in. During power play opportunities, Toronto went 2-for-3 while the Lakers scored on one of four of their opportunities.

During the contest, Oswego gave all three of their goalies some playing time as Mariah Madrigal and Mikaela DiTonto notched nine saves while Amber Samonek tallied eight.

Oswego State has a new Women’s Club Basketball team. The team got its start when Brianna Muncy met girls who showed interest in this type of club that did not exist on campus. She soon found a Vice President and Coach.

The club’s Vice President Raven Coffiel says, “I really have to give her all the credit though; it was really all her own.” Coach Chelsea Flores went to school for coaching at Oswego State and thought coaching women’s club basketball would be a great step toward her athletic coaching career.

The team started out small but is looking to improve and have some home games. They have had games in Binghamton and Hamilton so far, and are looking to play against schools such as Cortland and LeMoyne.

The club team gives the players a chance to play on a less competitive level. They are always looking for new players and  for people to cheer them on.

The fourth ranked Oswego State men’s hockey team defeated seventh ranked Geneseo 4-2 on Friday in what was a crucial SUNYAC matchup. With the win, the Lakers move to 17-3-2 overall while also clinching home-ice advantage throughout the conference playoffs. The Knights drop to 15-5-3 on the season.

Oswego came out strong on the offensive end in the beginning of the game scoring three goals. One of the scores came from Mitch Herlihey, off of an assist from Josh Zizek. The assist was Zizek’s team-leading 17th of the season. Geneseo’s top-five nationally ranked offense would not go down easily though as they cut the Lakers’ lead to just one in the final period. With 19 seconds remaining, Oswego put the game away on Herlihey’s empty net goal. The goal secured the senior captain a spot in the 100 point club making him the 56th Laker to reach the milestone.

Oswego will look to extend their winning streak tomorrow when they travel to Brockport for their last away matchup of the regular season. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 pm.
