Oswego Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Cortland

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego Men’s Lacrosse team lost their second game of the 2021 season on Friday, falling to the Cortland Red Dragons 16-7. The Cortland winning streak vs Oswego continues as the Red Dragons improve to 37-0 all time vs the Lakers. Oswego has yet to win a game this season after losing to Brockport to start the 2021 campaign.

Cortland came out firing early on, scoring the game’s first 3 goals before Weston Gray put the Lakers on the board to end the 1st quarter. Both teams scored 2 goals apiece in the 2nd quarter with the Red Dragons leading 5-3 at halftime. However Cortland would go on and blow things open in the second half. They outscored Oswego 11-4, including a 7-goal run to end the 3rd quarter. Liam Dollard and Weston Gray lead the way for the Lakers, each scoring 2 goals in the contest. Freshman midfielder, Lucas Cioch, also added 2 assists in the loss. Oswego now drops to 0-2 on the season following their two SUNYAC losses, and currently sit in 4th place in the West division. They’ll look to bounce back vs Nazareth College on Tuesday, April 13th at 4 p.m. in the Lakers first non-conference game of the season. Oswego Men’s Lacrosse Gets Set For the Cortland Red Dragons

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Men’s Lacrosse team is set to continue their 2021 season as they host the 2-3 Cortland Red Dragons on Friday, April 9th. This is only the second game for the Lakers as their previous games vs. Morrisville State and SUNY Oneonta were postponed last month.

Oswego is looking to recover from their 5-12 loss to the Brockport Golden Eagles on April 10th, and with SUNYAC games currently being played throughout their division, it’s more pivotal than ever for the Lakers to secure an early season victory. However, history is not on Oswego’s side. Oswego Men’s Lacrosse is 0-36 all-time vs. SUNY Cortland, with their last matchup being a 10-13 away loss in 2019. The Lakers will have to play better offensively than they did against Brockport in order to secure a victory. Five players scored in that game, including Dan Doolan and Weston Gray, who both added assists in the defeat. SUNY Cortland, currently on a two-game losing streak, will be lead by senior midfielder, Brandon Stiles, and sophomore attack, Luke Kilner, who are the leading scorers for the Red Dragons. Oswego goalie, Kevin O’Donnell, will have to be on has A-game in order to stop the high-powered Cortland offense. Faceoff is set for 7 PM at Laker Turf Stadium.

Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse team defeats Fredonia

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse team won their first SUNYAC game of the 2021 season, defeating SUNY Fredonia 16-10. It wasn’t just the Women’s Lacrosse team’s home opener, but the first Oswego home game in over 395 days. The Lakers defended home field exceptionally well as they lead for a majority of the game and never let the Blue Devils run their offensive systems smoothly.

Fredonia’s Madeline Haney started off strong, scoring the games first goal five minutes into regulation. However, that was the only lead Fredonia would have all game as the Lakers went on to score the next 5 goals, including back-to-back goals from freshman midfielder Shae McConnell. Oswego played tremendous defense all game, especially in the first half, giving up only 3 goals. The Blue Devils were more efficient in the second half, however they weren’t able to generate enough offense to keep up with the Lakers. Sophomore midfielder, Sela Wiley, played phenomenal once again, totaling 5 goals and 2 assists in the Oswego victory. Kamryn Sherman and Shae McConnell each had 4 goals apiece, while Isabella Lembo (2) and Logan Castiglione (1) also scored. Junior goalkeeper, Delaney Kendrick, held the Blue Devil offense in check as she totaled 5 saves and cleared the ball effectively all game. The Oswego Women’s Lacrosse team will have the opportunity to continue their 2021 season undefeated when they take on SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday, April 10th, at 4 PM.

Oswego Men’s Lacrosse falls to SUNY Brockport 12-5

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Men’s Lacrosse team was defeated by SUNY Brockport on Friday, losing their season opener 12-5. It was not the outcome the Lakers were looking for, especially after they had to wait longer than any other team in the West Division to start their 2021 season.

Brockport set the tone early in the first quarter, scoring 3 goals in the first four minutes of regulation. The Golden Eagles’ ferocious defensive effort made it hard for the Lakers to run their offense early on, as they only allowed 1 goal in the 1st quarter and held Oswego scoreless in the 2nd. The Lakers faced a 6-point deficit going into halftime and unfortunately, it was too big for them to overcome. Although Oswego was more efficient in the second half, they were unable to stop Brockport’s high powered offense lead by Jack Peterson and Rocco Santillo, who each had 3 goals respectively.

The difference-maker in this game was turnovers, as Oswego had nearly double the number of turnovers that Brockport had (21 to 11). Five Lakers scored in this matchup, including Weston Gray, Liam Dollard, Lucas Cioch, Dan Doolan, and Ryan Dumont. Freshman midfielder, Shane Ladd, went 10-20 on faceoffs in his collegiate debut. Senior goalkeeper, Kevin O’Donnell, had 11 saves, bringing his collegiate all-time to 409 in the saves category. Oswego has an opportunity to win their first game of the season on April 9th vs Cortland. The game will be held at Laker Turf Stadium with a 7 p.m. faceoff and WTOP 10 will have all the action.

Oswego Women’s Lacrosse Gets Set For Fredonia Blue Devils

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse team is set to play their second game of the 2021 season on Saturday vs. Fredonia. After multiple games were rescheduled, this will be the Laker’s first action since their dominant season-opening victory over Morrisville State on March 20th. This will also be the Laker’s first SUNYAC matchup this season. As for Fredonia, they are coming off a 21-4 SUNYAC loss to SUNY Brockport and have a season record of 0-2.

Fredonia has given up 37 total goals in their first two games of the season which bodes well for the Lakers leading scorer, Sela Wiley, as she looks to top her outstanding performance in Oswego’s season opener vs Morrisville. The sophomore midfielder totaled 7 goals on only 10 shots, while also racking up 5 ground balls and 1 assist. Junior attack, Logan Castiglione, will also look to top her last performance as she totaled 5 goals, 2 assists, and 0 turnovers. Although Fredonia hasn’t played well as of late, the Lakers still have to play aggressively, especially against senior attack, Allison Coon. Coon has scored 20+ goals every year prior to last year’s shortened season and has 2 goals so far in 2021. The Oswego Women’s Lacrosse team is currently on a four-game win streak vs Fredonia, with their last matchup being a 23-3 Laker victory in 2019. Oswego will look to extend their win streak to five on Saturday at 1:00 PM. WTOP 10 will be live at Laker Turf Stadium for the matchup.

Oswego Men’s Lacrosse Takes on Brockport

OSWEGO, NY — The Oswego State Men’s Lacrosse team is set to make their 2021 season debut on Friday vs. SUNY Brockport. The Lakers have had their previous two games (vs Morrisville State and vs SUNY Oneonta) either postponed or canceled due to positive COVID-19 cases. This will be the first time the Men’s Lacrosse team has played a game since March of 2020 and their first time playing Brockport since April of 2019.

Oswego will be led by starting goalkeeper, Kevin O’Donnell, who will begin his senior season on Friday. O’Donnell, a four-year starter for the Lakers, is only 2 saves away from reaching 400 career saves. Once accomplished, he will become the first Oswego Men’s goalkeeper to surpass 400 saves since Wyatt Russo in 2016. Junior starting attackman, Weston Gray, will lead the Lakers offensively vs Brockport. Gray has totaled 26 goals the past two seasons, including 20 goals in 2019. This contest will be Brockport’s second game of the season as they fell to Alfred University in an 8-7 loss on March 20th. However, Friday’s game will be both teams’ first SUNYAC matchup of the season, making it more pivotal than ever to secure an early-season victory. The Oswego Men’s Lacrosse team is currently 9-10 against Brockport all time, but can even things up with a win on Friday. The game is set for a 4 p.m. face-off in Brockport. Oswego Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Morrisville to Kickoff 2021 Season

MORRISVILLE, NY — The Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse Team won their first game of the 2021 season, defeating SUNY Morrisville 20-14. This was the first game for the Lakers in over a year due to the pandemic and they started their season off strong with a hard fought road victory. Sophomore midfielder Sela Wiley set the tone early, scoring Oswego’s first goal less than three minutes into the game. After going down 6-3 midway through the 1st period, junior attack Logan Castiglione scored back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to one. Following a quick Mustang goal, the Lakers would score six consecutive points heading into the second period, before going on multiple scoring runs to put the game out of reach.

Sela Wiley lead the Lakers in points, scoring 7 goals on 10 shots, while Logan Castiglione scored 5 goals on 8 shots. Midfielders Shae McConnell (4), Isabella Lembo (3), and attack Kamryn Sherman (1) each added goals of their own. Junior Goalkeeper Delaney Kendrick also had two saves in the win. Following today’s victory, the Oswego Women’s Lacrosse Team remains undefeated versus Morrisville, bringing their all time record to 11-0. The Lakers are now 1-0 on the season as they turn their attention to their first game in conference play on March 27th at SUNY Brockport.

Oswego Men’s Lacrosse: Season Debut Delayed

OSWEGO, NY — The Oswego State Men’s Lacrosse Team hasn’t played a game since March 10th of last year. Unfortunately, the Lakers will have to wait a bit longer to play their first game of the 2021 season. Oswego was originally scheduled to begin their season at home vs. SUNY Morrisville on March 17th, but due to a positive coronavirus case on the opposing team, the game was cancelled. Oswego was then scheduled to play SUNY Oneonta on March 20th, however the game was postponed earlier on Friday due to a positive case on the Lakers team.

This is now the second time in one week the Lakers will have their game either postponed or cancelled. The next scheduled game for Oswego is March 26th vs Geneseo. This was unfortunate for the Lakers as the game vs. Geneseo is the first of six scheduled SUNYAC games, meaning Oswego will have played zero games before conference play begins. If this happens, Oswego will be the only team in their division to not play a game before conference play starts. The Oswego Men’s Lacrosse Team last played Geneseo on April 20th, 2019, in a 13-14 home loss.

Oswego’s Men’s Lacrosse Team Set to Begin 2021 Season

OSWEGO, NY — The Oswego State Men’s Lacrosse Team is set to take on SUNY Oneonta on  Saturday, March 20th to kick off their 2021 season. This will be the Oswego Men’s Lacrosse team’s first action in over a year due to the pandemic. However, unlike prior seasons, conference play is set to begin earlier than ever before, starting March 26th versus Geneseo. Senior goaltender Kevin O’Donnell understands just how important these early games are to set the tone for the rest of the  season. 

“With SUNYACs coming up so soon and those being the most important games for our team,  the level of expectancy exceeds any other season in my opinion,” O’Donnell said. “Especially  with the teams were playing, Morrisville, Oneonta, and then the rest of the SUNY division, it’s  important that were on our A-game.” 

O’Donnell is now a team captain and is looking to surpass 400 career saves in the coming games. 

Being that this is the Lakers first game since March of 2020, it’s important that they eliminate  any mistakes or confusion they might have. Head Coach Drew Bezek, who is going into his 7th season on the coaching staff, believes his team needs to master their game plan early on in order to be successful.  

“With early season games, it’s always about limiting mistakes and doing what we need to do. A  lot of times with the beginning part of the season, you’re not so worried about your competition  and what they run. It’s us being super-efficient and consistent at what we’re trying to do.” 

Although many things are different this season for the players, coaches, and staff, film sessions and scouting remain an important aspect of Oswego’s success. However, since teams only played a few games in 2020, the Lakers will have to anticipate Oneonta’s game plan based off  what they saw from early last year. 

Coach Bezek said, “We’ll treat this year similar to the past where for the first game of the year,  your kind of going off tendencies from the previous year. We’re not going to know some of their  new players, but from the film, we could try to piece together how they run their system.” 

The Lakers have won their last four games vs. Oneonta dating back to 2016 and look to extend their win streak to five on Saturday.
