The Oswego State men’s hockey team won their first game of the season against Elmira Saturday night. The Lakers’ record improves to 1-0-0 while the Soaring Eagles fall to 1-1-0.
Before the game started, Mary Gosek’s children dropped the ceremonial puck in honor of her and everyone fighting cancer.
Elmira got on the board first with goals from Nick Ford and Anthony Perrucci. However, that’s all the Soaring Eagles were able to do. The Lakers scored four unanswered goals, including three from Josh Zizek and one from David Ferreira to cement the victory.
Lakers’ netminder David Richer made 30 saves in his Laker debut.
Oswego is back in action on Sunday when they travel to face No. 9/10 Hobart at 4 p.m..

Syracuse Police Receive Funds for Body Cameras
SYRACUSE, NY >> The U.S. Department of Justice has awarded a grant for $117,888 to Syracuse. The grant is specifically geared towards the sole purpose of equipping the police with body cameras for a pilot program.
However, the city of Syracuse will only be using half of that grant to buy ten police cameras. Syracuse mayor Stephanie Miner held a press conference this morning and said that the city of Syracuse will be working with the Department of Justice on how to implement this batch of cameras.
Miner also talked about how the new equipment in the police department will be apart of a pilot program that could be used to justify more cameras in the future.
Miner compared this pilot program to the use of surveillance cameras in the city back in 2011. Those cameras had started to be implemented on the Near West Side for their pilot program.
“Stationary cameras also started off as a pilot program, and now people want more cameras and feel they’re very effective,” Miner said. “People will want more as long as we do it in a methodical and effective way.”
In the past the city has been denied from being able to equip its police officers with cameras. Rochester and Albany had received more than $700,000 in federal grants to equip their own police with body cameras at the time when Syracuse’s proposal got rejected.
These struggles led Miner to criticize Rep. John Katko last week for not offering more help to the city in its bid for the grant.
But with Syracuse finally accepting $59,000 from the feds they can finally look forward to new police body cameras. Miner says that the police in Syracuse should be wearing cameras by the end of 2016.

Ponto Reaches Milestone
Oswego senior goalie Angela Ponto recorded her 500th career save in a dominant 11-4 victory on the road against the Potsdam Bears. The Bears put the first goal on the board but the Lakers went on a quick 5 goal run and never looked back. The Lakers added 6 more before Potsdam could even score another goal, making it an 11-0 run until Potsdam scored the final 3 goals of the game. Ponto got her 500th save, and she finished the game at career save number 503, putting her 115 saves past the previous saves record holder. Ponto will keep adding to that lead in the Lakers’ next contest on Saturday when they travel to Oneonta. Game time is set for 1 pm.

Improvised comedy club Shawn Cassidy Fan Club Looks Forward To An Exciting Year
SUNY Oswego’s improvised comedy club, the Shawn Cassidy Fan Club, hosts weekly shows every Saturday night at the Marano Campus Center Auditorium at 8 PM.
Kayla Bonasera is the club president.
“Every Saturday night we do live improve comedy performances where we have sketch-based comedy that revolves around the suggestions that we take from our audience,” said Kayla.
In the darkness of this room not only the bracelets glow, but some of the worst humor also comes to surface, which is why they must censor some parts of the show.
“It does get crazy. During the parents weekend show we censor it. We actually allow one swear word,” said Carl Neff, who is treasurer of the club.
But not only the local students and their parents come to the shows. One example is Spanish exchange student Andrea Rodriguez.
“I think the most exciting thing about this performance is that they all act natural,” said Andrea.
If you are looking for something fun to do on the weekends here on campus, the troop practices every Sunday night and performs the skits on Saturdays.
