OSWEGO, N.Y. – It was a back and fourth battle yesterday afternoon when the Red Dragons of Cortland made the hour and a half drive to Oswego. Cortland has had the Lakers number for a while and they looked to keep the streak going. The Lakers were hungry and were ready for a war. They found themselves battling from behind early on in the matchup when they were down three goals at the end of the first quarter. The Lakers found more success in the second, putting up four goals. Cortland was still firing on all cylinders and had a four goal lead over the Lakers heading into halftime. Freshman Max Brodman had himself a day scoring four goals on the contest, making him the lead scorer for the Lakers. Sophomore Gavin Elston had two goals on the day as well as freshman Cameron Tallman. The Lakers went goal for goal with Cortland in the third, leaving them at a four goal deficit heading into the forth. The Lakers came off firing in the fourth scoring two back to back goals at the start of the fourth. Their momentum was halted after another goal from Cortland as the final score was 16-12. Lakers Comeback Against Clarkson Falls Short
OSWEGO, NY- The women’s lacrosse team dropped their season opener to Clarkson 15-11 despite rallying at the end of the game.The first quarter started out the wrong way for the Lakers as they fell behind 2-0 as Clarkson controlled the first quarter. The second quarter was brutal as well for the Lakers as they gave up more goals to Clarkson. Clarkson’s Julia Lavarnway set up Madelynn Barnum to score to put Clarkson up 3-0 with 9:14 left in the second quarter. Lavarnway had a great second quarter assisting with two goals for the Golden Knights, Lavarnway would score later in the second quarter as she scored to put Clarkson up 6-0 with 3:58 left in the first half. The Lakers would finally get on the board as Katie Fierro would score with 40 seconds left in the first half as Shae McConnell would assist with the goal. Julia Lavarnway had a great first half as she assisted with three goals and scored as well. Clarkson’s goalie Jennaca McGill would record nine saves in the first half.
Madelynn Barnum started out the second half on an attack as he had back-to-back goals to put Clarkson up 8-1. The Lakers would then go on their own attack as Madison Davis put on a show scoring three straight goals to put the Lakers down 11-4. A penalty on Clarkson’s Kaitlyn McNamara set up Shae McConnell to score her first goal of the season but the Lakers still trailed 11-5. Mia Petrone would score her second goal of the day for Clarkson as they led 12-6 over Oswego at the end of the third quarter. Hailee Millington would score her fourth goal of the game as Clarkson led 13-6 early in the fourth quarter. Madelynn Barnum would also score her final and fourth goal of the game to put Clarkson up 14-7. Chrissy Benedict would score the final goal of the game for the Golden Knights as Clarkson led 15-7. Isabella Lembo, Julia Quirk, and Katie Fierro would give the Lakers life as they trailed 15-10. Madison Davis would score her fifth goal of the game as the Lakers trailed 15-11 but it was a little too late with 1:50 left in the game, the Lakers would lose their season opener. The last two matchups between Clarkson and Oswego were the season openers to the women’s lacrosse season and the Lakers would drop both games. Oswego’s last win against Clarkson came on March 1, 2019 where they won on the road against Clarkson 16-14 but they haven’t beat Clarkson at Laker Turf Stadium since the 2010-2011 women’s lacrosse season.
The Lakers travel to Suny Canton on Friday, March 3rd to take on the Kangaroos. The Lakers are undefeated against Canton as the Kangaroos look to break the long winning streak by the Lakers against them and the Lakers look to rebound and win their first game of the season.

Game Recap: Skaneateles beats Oswego
OSWEGO, NY — Thursday evening, the Oswego Boys Buccaneers Hockey team took on the Skaneateles Lakers inside the Crisafulli Ice Rink. The Section III matchup featured two teams in division two that were used to seeing each other during a season. Both groups have seen each other before as Oswego kicked off their season on the road in Skaneateles. The Bucs would fall to the Lakers 7-2 but would-be prepared heading into this contest after coming off a win the night before against Auburn.
The Lakers would open the scoring in the first period after Luke Renaud would tally his first goal of the contest. He would add another to his season total later in the game. Oswego would trail 1-0 heading into the second period as Brayden Demling had a strong performance in net to keep the contest within one goal. He would have a total of 31 saves in the contest and play all 45 minutes in between the pipes for the Buccaneers.
In the second stanza, the Lakers would start to extend their lead as the team would add three more goals. Oswego would answer in the third period with a Collin Cianfarano goal that was assisted by Marcus Baker and Brayden Miller. This tally would be the Bucs only goal of the evening as the Lakers would continue their dominance in the final stanza with three more goals to add to their total. Skaneateles netminder Adam Casper would make 13 saves in route to the victory.
Skaneateles extends their win streak to 48 and stays undefeated on the season. Oswego will take the weekend off and reset for another match up next Tuesday against the Ontario Bay Storm. The last time these two teams met was earlier on in the season, with Oswego coming away with a 5-0 win. Men’s basketball captures big milestone in route to winning tip off tournament
WILLIMANTIC, CT. – The Oswego state men’s basketball team has continued their success from last year with a big tournament win this past weekend The Lakers traveled to Eastern Connecticut for the Tip-Off Tournament on Friday where they first faced the Hobart statesman. Oswego started the game by establishing a 6 point lead late in the first half of play with the help of their solid defensive performance. Hobart would then go on a run and erase the lead, eventually getting a three point lead of their own with 2:42 in the first half. Oswego was not be able to erase the deficit in a very low scoring half and allowed Hobart to hold a 30-25 lead going into halftime.
Oswego would come out alot stronger in the second half and put on an impressive offensive performance. The Lakers would erase a nine-point second half deficit and turn it into a their highest lead of the game by 16 points,. The Lakers ended up winning 65-53 to win game one of their weekend. Oswego would shoot 50% from the field in the second half, converting 17 of 34 field goal attempts and shot 40% from 3pt range, hitting 6 of 15 3-pt field goal attempts. Ahkee Anderson lead the way for the Lakers by scoring 15 points and overall shooting 50% from the field. Jeremiah Sparks led the team in rebounds with 8 and brought the Lakers to the championship Saturday.
The Lakers team faced Eastern Connecticut State Warriors in a back and forth matchup for the championship game of the Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Oswego would come out on fire in the first half shooting lights out with an outstanding 46.4% (13/28) on field goal attempts. But the Lakers couldn’t get the 3pt shots to fall shooting only 20% (2/10) from beyond the arc. The Lakers played some tough defense on the Warriors holding them to only 28.6% on their field goal attempts in the first. Oswego then established a 16 point lead late in the first. However, the Warriors would rally and end the half on a 11-0 run, hitting three consecutive 3-pt shots. Oswego went into halftime leading 32-27 going into halftime. Jamal Achille led the Lakers with 9 points in the first half. New Laker Cartier Bowman lead Oswego on the glass with 7 rebounds and Devin Green and Ahkee Anderson would each add 2 assists going on half.
The Warriors defense in the second half would give them the advantage in the half, causing many Oswego turnovers to start. Oswego would then go ahead and build another double-digit lead early in the half, and the Warriors would go on another 11 point run to give them a 46-45 lead. Despite their struggles offensively early, Oswego would then hit several clutch free throws late to help push them over the Warriors. Oswego would win the tournament in a 60-50 victory over the Warriors. Ahkee Anderson lead the Lakers with 21 points,3 assists and 2 steals. Jeremiah Sparks recorded his first double-double of the season scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Three Oswego players made the all tournament team with Ahkee Anderson, Jeremiah Sparks and Cartier Bowman making the team. With this win on Saturday, Coach Jason Leone also becomes the winningest coach in Oswego State Basketball History passing Kevin Broderick who coached the Lakers from 1996 until 2009 with a 209-150 record. Leone now stands at the very top of the record book with a 210-78 record in his twelfth year as the Lakers’ Head Men’s Basketball Coach.
