Oz Speaks Series: ‘Blue Lives Matter’

Moderated speak-out series “Oz Speaks” held the most recent talk in their series on Oct. 25. The topic was on the issue about Blue Lives Matter.
Students, faculty and members of the community were encouraged to speak about their thoughts and feelings about the situation without it being a debate. Some participants shared stories of family members in law enforcement while others discussed the impact of both the Blue Lives Matter and Black Lives Matter movements on their personal lives.
Sophomore Keonna Wren was one of the participants of the event. One of the issues she spoke about was her identity as a black woman and how the two movements, [Black Lives Matter and Blue Lives Matter] shaped her life.
“I absolutely love events like this because it’s not a debate,” said Wren. “I’m happy I got to spoke my truth and that’s what I came here for.”
Associate Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students Jerri Howland is one of the organizers for “Oz Speaks.” She says this speak out is different from the others because of the structure for how Blue Lives Matter came about and how this movement contrasts to Black Lives Matter.
“It’s not only important for students, but it’s important for everyone in our society to make sure we listen to all points of views,” Howland said. “I think it’s when we don’t listen to others and don’t understand their point of view that we don’t really get to the heart of what diversity is.”
Howland says the goal of the “Oz Speaks” series is to create a space for the SUNY Oswego community to freely speak about their thoughts on issues. She believes the series has successfully done that so far.
The next “Oz Speaks” talk will be Nov. 1 at 6:30 PM in the Campus Center Auditorium.

Lakers Sweep First Day of Tourney
The Oswego State volleyball team performed a clean sweep of its opponents at Max Ziel Gymnasium on Friday night.
In their opening game, the Lakers dominated the Hilbert Hawks in every major statistical category. They would go on to win three sets to none by scores of 25-5, 25-10 and 25-12. Laura Finn starred for Oswego State, finishing with eleven digs, seven kills and two aces while Julia Flohr contributed 28 assists.
Against SUNY Canton, Oswego State won by narrower margins, 25-18, 25-20 and 26-24. Alison Sullivan was a force to be reckoned with on both the offensive and defensive ends for the Lakers as she had eight kills and a team-leading seven blocks. Also contributing was Shauna O’Flaherty with 17 digs and two aces.
Oswego, now 4-6 on the year, will face Utica College at 11 a.m tomorrow followed by Elmira College at 1 p.m.

Internet Safety Beyond Cyber Awareness Month
OSWEGO N.Y.— Beyond Cyber Awareness Month, online scams continue to threaten identities. A cyber attack happens every 39 seconds in the United States alone, according to a study by the University of Maryland.
Young adults appear to be a primary target. A report from the Federal Trade Commissions says that young adults are 20 percent more likely to lose money in an online scam than their senior citizen counterparts, who more often fall victim to telemarketing scams.
SUNY Oswego’s Campus Technology Officer Sean Moriarity warned students to take precautions and explained how hackers can use your identity at any time, even decades from now.
“Young people are young,” Moriarity said, “Some day they’re going to be more wealthy than they are right now, so it is important to stay vigilant.”
In light of Cyber Awareness Month, Oswego’s Campus Technology Services hosted a variety of events to educate students about cybersecurity, including an email-phishing quiz, two-factor verification contest, and a phishing derby.
