Pride and Prejudice
by Michael Reilly
Oswego, NY- The Oswego State theater department’s production of Jon Jory’s adaptation of the Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice, directed by theater professor Mya Brown, begins this weekend. Alexandra Matsu stars as Elizabeth Bennet, a woman looking to break away from the strict social norms she’s expected to follow in 19th century England. Matsu says the play’s message is about staying true to your feelings.
“Open your heart and to keep your heart open and don’t allow yourself to be affected by the noise of outside life,” she said.
Stage Director Emily Stott says giving the show a more modern feel makes it more powerful.
“To incorporate a contemporary heartbeat allows us to revitalize the show,” she said. “It provides a relatability to the audience, a modern feel.”
Also starring in the production is Cadi Hannold as Mrs. Bennet, Evan Debevec-McKenney as Mr. Bennet, Logan Colby-Rowe as Jane Bennet, Marisa Miner as Mary Bennet, Kayla Bonesera as Kitty Bennet, and Sean Ryan as Mr. Darcy.
Pride and Prejudice’s first preview performance will be on Apr. 20 at 7:30PM at the Waterman Theater in Tyler Hall, with opening night on Apr. 21. Performances will continue on Apr. 22 and 29 at 7:30PM and Apr. 30 at 2:30PM. Tickets are $15 to the general public and $7 for Oswego State students with ID.

Resident Mentor Plans Never Before Attempted Overnight Trip

OSWEGO, NY — Students from Johnson Residence Hall at SUNY Oswego have recently embarked on an overnight trip to New York City. Johnson Hall resident mentor Jerimiah Butler says that this is the first time a member of campus residence life has organized an overnight trip with students.
“It’s an action-packed-like trip. We have no time for, you know, shenanigans here,” Butler said. “But we’re very excited, you know, it’s been a long planning process.”
The journey to New York had consisted of a concert from contemporary worship band, “Elevation Worship,” at the Playstation Theater in Times Square. The group had also made stops at Ellis Island, as well as the Statue of Liberty.
“It’s crazy how, like, it happened, because I wanted to see Elevation Worship for a long time,” student Amber Saint Joi said. “I was like, ‘I don’t know how I’m going to get here.’ And then this trip happened, so it’s like, ‘oh my god,’ so then we’re going to go see the Statue of Liberty, so definitely doing stuff for the residents, especially for all freshmen as well, it’s a new experience since people have never been to New York City.”
Resident mentor Butler hopes for this type of program to be held on an annual basis, with Niagara Falls possibly being the designated location for the next semester.
“We’re just dreaming big,” Butler said. “That’s one thing that my hall director here, Olive, really presses on us, it’s ‘think big.’ She’s been a huge help, as well as Linda, our FYRE coordinator. You know, a lot of meeting across this past month and a half or so, but this trip would not happen without their support.”
With a successful trip like this one, there’s no telling what amazing memories the RMs of SUNY Oswego will help make for students.

Lakers Win Close Game Against Canton
The nationally ranked Oswego State men’s hockey team defeated the Canton Kangaroos 3-2 on Saturday night. With the win, the Lakers move to 3-1 overall while the Kangaroos drop to 1-3.
After taking an early lead in the first period off of Josh Zizek’s team leading fourth goal of the season, the Lakers never looked back. The team continued its success on the power play in the second period with AJ D’Orazio scoring the first goal of his young Oswego career. However, Canton would not give up easily as they would pull within one. Just under two minutes later, Lakers’ alternate captain Cameron Berry gave Oswego the insurance goal they were looking for to put them up 3-1.
In goal, Canton’s Austin Washkurak made 37 saves while Oswego’s Cedric Hansen earned his first NCAA win, stopping 20 shots.
Oswego will look to build on their two game winning streak Friday night at 7 pm when they take on Buffalo State at the Marano Campus Center Arena.
