Zonta Witches Ball Raises Funds to Fight Domestic Violence
OSWEGO, NY — The Zonta Club of Oswego has taken their celebration of Halloween to the next level with their second annual Witches Ball at the Lake Ontario Conference Center. According to the Witches Ball chairperson, Tammy Elowsky, the Zonta Club of Oswego serves as a service and advocacy group for women.
“Our friends of ours do a Witches’ Night Out, and they told me about their event. And I thought it was fantastic,” Elowsky said. “And so we decided to do a different spin on it and call it a Witches’ ball, some of the wizards are allowed to come. But we have all kinds of vendors and dancing and fun but it’s all for a great cause.”
The event had supported the Oswego County Opportunities’ Safe Services program to provide aid to survivors of domestic violence. Chairperson Elowsky strives for the Witches Ball to improve and evolve into a bigger and better event than ever before.
“So last year we had about 300 people that attended at our first year. We were absolutely amazed at that. We’ve outgrew our venue and we’ve come to the convention center this year,” Eloswky said. “And we’ve had more people, I don’t know what the final count is now. We’re obviously hoping to grow, looking for more vendors, whatever we can do to raise more money for this awesome cause.”

SUNY Oswego hosts 17th annual Great Pumpkin Run

OSWEGO, N.Y.– The Great Pumpkin Run lived up to its name this year by raising money for a great cause. Members of the Oswego community came out on Saturday, October 14th, to participate in the 11th annual Great Pumpkin Run 5k and walk. The event was hosted by SUNY Oswego’s fitness centers and served as fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Donations of five dollars were accepted at check in.
According to their website, the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s mission is to “save lives by meeting the most critical needs in their communities and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer.”
The race began at Hewitt Ballroom and continued around the campus for 3.1 miles. Some runners managed to complete the race in under twenty minutes while other participants chose to walk. Race winner Joe DeBona said finishing the race at 19 minutes and 17 seconds was his best record so far in college.

SUNY Oswego’s College Republicans Club uses beach ball to promote free speech

OSWEGO, NY – On Wednesday October 25th, the College Republicans Club at SUNY Oswego put up a 8-foot beach ball in front of Penfield Library to promote free speech. The beach ball was used as a medium to encourage students to write anything they wanted whether they were political views or their Instagrams.
President of the College Republicans Club Tyler Toomey said that using the beach ball as a medium for free speech is an event that is being held on other campuses along the east coast.
“It’s a pretty big event through some nonprofit organizations nationwide so we got in contact with them and they actually drove the ball from D.C down to us last night,” Toomey said.
Student Shelby Stewart took the opportunity to express her political views.
“I wrote that I support Trump…because a lot of people wrote a lot of liberal things and I feel like there’s not very many Republicans on campus,” Stewart said.
Stewart said she hopes that by having the beach ball present that it will inspire unity on campus.
“I think if anything it’s going to unite everybody because they see that the College Republicans aren’t just saying, ‘You can’t write anything on it if it’s not Republican’. So I think hopefully, it just going to unite campus and show that people can get along,” Stewart said.
