OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Men’s Lacrosse game lost their sixth game of the season, falling to the Geneseo Knights 20-4 on Saturday. This is the Lakers second consecutive loss to the Knights as they were previously defeated 19-8 on April 22nd. Oswego now drops to 0-6 in 2021 with only one game remaining in their schedule.
Geneseo was dominant early on, scoring the first 5 goals of the game and holding Oswego scoreless in the first quarter. Junior attackman, Weston Gray, scored the Lakers first goal early in the second quarter, but Oswego was unable to keep pace with Geneseo’s high-powered offense. The Knights went on a 4-1 scoring run to end the first half and outscored the Lakers 11-2 the rest of the game. Geneseo was shooting the ball at a fast and substantial rate throughout the game. The Knights totaled 72 shots and held the Lakers to only 26, including 9 in the first half. Dan Doolan, Ryan Eccles, and Garrett Petrelli all had goals in Saturday’s matchup. Geneseo junior attackman, Kevin Cook, was once again a huge problem for Oswego’s defense. He totaled 5 goals and 1 assist in their previous game and he followed it up with another 5-goal performance.
Oswego was eliminated from postseason play earlier this week while Geneseo will be looking ahead to their upcoming playoff game in the SUNYAC Championship. The Lakers haven’t won a game this season but will have the opportunity to improve to 1-6 on April 30th vs the Cortland Red Dragons. Oswego is 0-37 versus Cortland all-time and will need to capture their first victory to avoid a winless season. Faceoff is set for 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 30th at Cortland.

Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse Prepares for Clarkson University
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego Women’s Lacrosse team is set to play their second non-conference game of the season, taking on the Clarkson University Golden Knights on Wednesday, April 14th. The Lakers won their previous non-conference game vs Morrisville State in a 20-14 victory.
Oswego is coming off their first loss of the season, so they’ll look to rebound vs the Golden Knights. They were defeated by the Geneseo Knights 22-9 on April 12th, which dropped them to 3rd in the West division. Clarkson is entering the matchup on a four-game losing streak, with their most recent loss being a 5-11 defeat to William Smith College. Lakers leading scorer, Sela Wiley, will look to continue her hot streak vs Clarkson. She’s totaled 18 goals on the season and has a .500 shot percentage in 2021. Freshman midfielder, Shae McConnell, will also look to continue her stellar start as she has 13 goals and 2 assists this season. Though, they’ll have to contend the explosive Clarkson offense. The Golden Knights will be lead by junior midfielder and leading scorer, Grace Hagberg, who’s totaled 13 goals. Senior attack, Krysten Stone, is also having a great season. She leads the team in total points, including 11 goals and 5 assists. Oswego is 12-11 all-time vs Clarkson University, however the Golden Knights won their last matchup 9-5 in 2020. Faceoff is set for 4:00 PM at Laker Turf Stadium.

Oswego State women’s hockey completes comeback against SUNY Potsdam
POTSDAM N.Y. — The Oswego women’s hockey team is in the midst of a fight for playoff seeding in the NEWHL. Coming into Tuesday night’s matchup in Potsdam they had three games remaining. The game against the Bears was a big one, the Lakers have already clinched a spot in the playoffs, but Potsdam still fighting for that final seed.
The Lakers took the first period. The lone goal of the period coming on the power play. Morgan Shines passed the puck up to the offensive blue line. Captain Philomena Teggart grabbed the puck and skated to the middle, Shines and Mack Hull set up a screen in front of goal and Teggart took a shot low on the goalies glove side and put it just inside the post. The Lakers killed a late power play for the Bears, and finished the first up on the scoreboard. They dominated the period, winning shots on goal 18-4.
The Lakers almost beat themselves at the start of the second period. A power play three minutes into the period for the Bears and a power play nine minutes in both got killed by the Lakers, with Laker goalie Joanna Hiebert making a few nice saves to keep the Lakers up. Unfortunately, quickly after the end of the second power play the Bears tied the game. Potsdam won possession at their offensive blue line setting up a two-on-two, and forward Kaylee Merrill threatened a pass but took it herself and scored a goal that was assisted by former Laker Megan Teachout. Just four minutes later Merrill picked off a Laker pass and took it one-on-one down the ice and scored a shorthanded goal to give the Bears a 2-1 lead and get her second goal of the night. Oswego again led in shot 15-11.
The third period started with the Lakers finishing off a penalty kill. The Lakers would go on the penalty kill again just before the three minute mark in the period. The Laker would kill it and clear the puck out of the defensive zone. The puck would skip a Bears players stick and Morgan Shines would gather and shoot it to the high blocker side for her team leading ninth goal and tie the game back up at two a piece with fifteen to go. The Lakers would go on a power play with 7:30 to go. Chyne Kennedy would make a key play to keep stop Potsdam for clearing the puck. She would pass the puck to Simone Bednarik who would pass it to Ariella Haas would put the puck in the back of the net for what was the game winning goal. The Lakers defensive would step up and stop a few Potsdam chances, including a late penalty kill, and the game would finish 3-2 in the Lakers favor. Joanna Hiebert would finish the game with twenty saves and improve her record to 10-3-1.
With the win, the Lakers have now won six straight and have a record of 14-0-7-1 (11-0-4-1 NEWHL). They are currently tied with Cortland in the standings, but sit a seed below due to the tiebreaker being head-to-head with the one seed, in this case Plattsburgh. The Lakers have two games left in the season and need to win out and need Cortland to lose one of their final two, both against SUNY Canton. The first of the Lakers final two games is Friday February, 18 in Morrisville against the Mustangs. Lakers Show Out in Oswego Volleyball Classic
Oswego, N.Y. – The Oswego State volleyball team welcomed a slew of squads to the Max Ziel gymnasium on Friday as the Oswego State Invitational kicked off, with the Lakers taking on the Brockport Golden Eagles in the first contest of the day at 2 p.m.
The Lakers controlled the tempo from the outset, as an offensive onslaught from the home squad led to an early 10-4 lead. Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, errors loomed large, and they struggled to find a semblance of footing. The Lakers operated off of beneficiaries Grace Gdovin, Priscilla McReynolds and Kalley Vugteveen and others, to help lift the squad to a 25-14 win in the first set.
The second set was far tighter than the first, with ties and lead changes occurring amidst a competitive bout. The Golden Eagles found an edge when they went up 18-13, but the Lakers would not go down without a fight. They climbed all the way back, and the contest was eventually knotted up at 23, but late-stage heroics from Gigi Basile and Vugteveen pushed the Lakers over the hump as they took the second set, 25-23, to go up 2-0.
The third set replicated what happened in much of the second, with both squads matching up evenly. The Golden Eagles fought tooth and nail, and while they were able to generate momentum, errors once again proved to be more than costly. Moreover, the Lakers applied an aggressive offensive attack that was fueled by high-IQ plays, which led them to a 22-18 lead, and eventually a 25-21 win, thanks to Alaina Dudzinski and Gdovin coming through as clutch. The Lakers laid claim to their first victory of the day, and would hand the court to Western Connecticut and Keuka, as the two faced off at 4 p.m.
The sophisticated offensive schemes of Western Connecticut overpowered Keuka, as one of the constitution state’s own came out on top, 3-0. They held a height advantage, which allowed them to meet their opponents at the net and deny potential chances at scoring. That was one of many deciding factors in their dominant 25-10 win in set one, and the momentum wouldn’t slow down in the next.
While Keuka came out more competitive in the second set when they jumped out to a 5-4 lead, Western Connecticut remained undeterred. They tacked on five unanswered points amid a communication struggle within the confines of Keuka, and would eventually pull away while working in a tighter defense to take the set 25-15, and go up 2-0. The third and final set saw Western Connecticut return to their roots, as they took a 5-1 lead early on. Keuka made a late push that cut the deficit to just one, but an unfortunate overshot called out-of-bounds came as the game-clinching point for Western Connecticut, and they took the set 26-24 to claim a sweep.
The Wolves’ would return to the hardwood at 6 p.m., but their night would soon be spoiled, as the home-squad Lakers swiftly took them down, 3-0. Even with the sweep, each set balanced a competitive feel, with Keuka refusing to go down easily. The first saw the two tie 11 separate times, but the Lakers pulled away in the late stages when the Wolves committed an error, followed by a killshot from Priscilla McReynolds, which would give a first-set statement victory to the Lakers.
Keuka committed a strong playstyle in the second set, which assisted them in going up 14-11 early. However, the Lakers would quickly storm back, as both Vugteveen and Kalley put forth kills, succeeded by two-straight service aces from Gabriella Bishop. The outing remained even from there, with both teams trading conversions past the net. Thankfully for the Lakers, their top beneficiary in McReynolds came through swinging for a kill to make it 25-24, which was followed up with an unfortunate error from the opposition, which would give the Lakers the game-clinching point, for them to go up 2-0.
The momentum saw a drastic shift towards the Lakers in the final set, as they would double down on a tyrannical offensive attack that had the Wolves running around on eggshells. A victory would be returned to the shorelines of Lake Ontario, as a commanding performance helped the Lakers to come out as victors, 25-14, and end the night with a record of 2-0.
The day concluded with a scrappy battle between Pitt-Bradford and SUNY Canton on court one, with the Panthers coming out as victors, 3-1. While the Kangaroos took the first set, 25-23, the Panthers roared back and completely dominated in the second, highlighted by a commanding performance from Ruby Smith that helped her squad tie it up at one. From there it was all Panthers, as they came through strongly with schemes that were tough to match up against. They took the third and fourth sets, 25-20, and 25-21, to finish out day one of the event.
The competition opens back up tomorrow, when the Lakers take on the Wolves of Western Connecticut at 10 a.m., followed by a plethora of matches that conclude the annual Oswego State Invite.
