OSWEGO N.Y. — A good ole fashion blowout. That’s what this game could be named. The Oswego State women’s hockey team faced off against the Buffalo State Bengals Wednesday night and held them scoreless. This dominant victory showcased just how impressive this Lakers team is. The Lakers now move to 12-7-1 on the season, and 9-4-1 in the SUNYAC Conference. This impressive five score victory was just what the Lakers needed to build more momentum moving forward. Some key contributors in this contest were freshman Ashlyn McGrath who led the Lakers with two goals on the night, as well as one assist. The freshman has proved this season that she’s here to stay and will be an integral part of this Lakers team for years to come. Sophomore Rachel Corbett also had an impressive performance with one goal and one assist. Sophomore Mia Conboy had a goal as well and was impressive throughout the contest. If this Lakers team continues to dominate, they will be very hard to stop in the coming weeks as the season heats up. The Lakers are set to have their senior night this Friday in the Deb Stan Arena. Lakers field hockey suffer first loss on the road
CANTON, N.Y. – The Lakers end their undefeated start with a 1-0 loss to the St. Lawrence Saints on Saturday afternoon. Both teams had great defensive starts with no team budging in the first 20 minutes. After a quiet first quarter St. Lawrence finally had a breakthrough 23:07 in the second when forward Anna Coyne weaved her way through the lakers defense to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Oswego tried to fight back in the third quarter behind a 5-1 edge in shots, but St. Lawrence played great defense and dominated possesion in the 4th and the lakers could not break through. St. Lawrence dominated possession for most of the game with 19 shots on goal compared to the Lakers’ nine and dominated on penalty corners 14-2. Lakers goalie Erica Scheblein ended with a game leading 15 saves on the day.The Lakers are now 5-1 and will next host the University of Rochester on the Laker Turf Field Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the program’s annual Teal Game.

Oswego State Softball Heads to Geneseo for SUNYAC Doubleheader
GENESEO, N.Y. — Oswego State Softball takes the field after four full days off with a doubleheader on Friday, April 23rd in Geneseo at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. as the Lakers take on the Knights. Geneseo enters at 7-4 (5-3) and in sole possession of first place in SUNYAC West Division, Oswego comes in at 5-5 (4-4) and a chance to take first place in SUNYAC West with a doubleheader sweep. Oswego is in a tight battle in the division as there is currently a three way tie between Fredonia, Brockport, and Oswego heading into the doubleheader.
Oswego and Geneseo met at Laker Softball Field on Friday, April 9th when Geneseo swept the Lakers 9-1 and 5-0. Fiona Higgins was the best hitter in the doubleheader going 2-4 with the only Oswego RBI on the day. Nicole Schwartz and Lauren Kersch combined to throw all 12 innings on the day (game one was abbreviated to five innings due to mercy rule) allowing just five hits, one unearned run and 12 strikeouts. Oswego has gone 4-2 since being swept by Geneseo, and will look to keep some offense rolling into the weekend which features a Friday doubleheader at Geneseo, and a Saturday doubleheader at home versus Buffalo State.
Madison Hoeflich won SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week last week with a 2-0 record, Hoeflich threw 10 innings allowing just seven hits and three runs to get her season ERA down to 2.66. Hoeflich will likely be locked in a pitchers duel in one of the games against Schwartz who has a 1.17 ERA, or Kersch with a 2.68 ERA very similar to Hoeflich. Zoe Mennig is not only the best hitter for Oswego, but also one of the best in the SUNYAC. Mennig leads SUNYAC in batting average with a .545, tied for second in the conference with three home runs, and leads the team in RBIs with 12. Oswego Softball plays four games in two days starting with a doubleheader Friday, April 23rd at Geneseo at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Oswego High School Girls Bucaneers Hockey: Julia Roman commits to WNE
OSWEGO, NY — Wednesday Morning, June 3rd, the Western New England Women’s Hockey team announced the commitment of Oswego Buccaneer Julia Roman. The Oswego native attended Oswego High School and played on the Oswego High School Girls Hockey team along with the school’s soccer team. The Senior was named Captain this season for the Bucs and led the group to a 9-8 overall record and finished fourth in the season standings. The team would fall to the Section III Champions, the Clinton Warriors, in the semifinals of Sectionals. Roman, a right handed shot, would tally 7 points (2 goals & 5 assists) over the course of her senior season and led defenseman in points along side freshman Mia Fierro. The defenseman recorded 17 points over the past three seasons in a Buccaneers uniform.
Western New England University is located just outside Springfield, Massachusetts, and is a part of the Commonwealth Coast Conference, who will now recognize Women’s Hockey with a conference championship. The Golden Bear announced last June that the college would start a Women’s Hockey team at the start of the 2020-21 season. The Division III program would join the new conference along with Suffolk University. A majority of this conference is made up of members of the CHC, the Colonial Hockey Conference. The CHC will has recently disbanded after the creation of the newer conference. This conference winner will get an automatic bid to the Division III Women’s Hockey Championship. The Oswego State Lakers have yet to play a CHC opponent in program history, so the return of Julia Roman to Oswego to play against the green and gold is unlikely. WTOP 10 will continue to deliver updates on both the Oswego High School Buccaneers and the Oswego High School Girls Buccaneers Hockey teams next season as both teams currently prepare for the 2020-21 season.
