Sullivan and Lakers take care of business against No. 5 Hobart

OSWEGO — The No. 6 Oswego State men’s ice hockey team defeated No. 5 Hobart by a score of 4-2. Jody Sullivan started the scoring as he crept in past the blue line and punished a wrister past the Statesmen goalie’s right shoulder. Aaron Huffnagle, Anthony Pasero, and Mitch Emerson also tallied a goal apiece in the match. David Richer was strong in the net recording twelve saves while allowing two in the net. The Lakers will travel to Fredonia on Friday for a meeting with the Blue Devils. Puck drops at 7 p.m.

Oswego State women’s basketball concludes 2021-22 season celebrating two seniors

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s basketball team concluded the 2021-22 season last weekend, honoring seniors Danielle Caivana and Raiven Encarnacion in the process. The Lakers fell to SUNY Brockport 56-55 on Friday and Fredonia 68-60 on Saturday, bringing their season record to 5-19.

In their second matchup of the season, the Lakers and Golden Eagles played a hard fought game from start to finish. After the opening tip, Brockport took an early 8-6 lead before the Lakers went on a 14-2 run. With 2:42 left in the first quarter, Oswego led 20-10. Danielle Caivana scored nine points in the quarter, shooting 3-3 from behind the arc. Heading into the second frame, Brockport stormed back to knot the game up at 20. However, eight points from Logan Castiglione helped the Lakers regain the lead and go into the half up 37-25. After a back-and-forth third quarter, Brockport brought the deficit to seven entering the final ten minutes. The Golden Eagles continued to fight down the stretch and pulled the game within two points with just over a minute remaining in regulation. Castiglione, who was great defensively in this game, came up with a clutch steal to maintain the Oswego lead with 30 seconds remaining. After some scrappy play, an Oswego foul put Brockport on the free throw line down just one point. The Golden Eagles nailed both free throws to take their first lead since the opening quarter. The Lakers got a last-second shot off in time, but it would fall short, giving Brockport the victory. Shania Iglesias finished the contest with 16 points while Caivana (15) and Castiglione (10) both scored double-digit points.

Before the tip-off of Saturday’s senior night game, Oswego celebrated Caivana and Encarnacion for their accomplishments with the team. Both teams exchanged a flurry of baskets throughout the first quarter, with Fredonia up 18-16 heading into the second. The Lakers quickly took their first lead of the game off a Diamond Pickett three-point shot. The Blue Devils and Lakers went shot-for-shot throughout the frame, with Fredonia escaping the the quarter up 32-27. To begin the second half, Fredonia went on a small scoring run. Though, Encarnacion scored two buckets and a free throw to bring the deficit to five. Despite Oswego’s persistence, Fredonia went into the final quarter with a nine point lead. The Lakers would bring the game within six points with 30 seconds remaining, but it was too little, too late for the home team. Diamond Pickett finished with her fifth double-double of the season, putting up 19 points, 16 boards, three assists, and three steals. Encarnacion and Caivana combined for 25 points in their final game as Lakers. With this win, the Blue Devils clinched the sixth and final playoff berth in the SUNYAC Championship.

Although it wasn’t the outcome the team was hoping for, the Lakers have a bright future lead by their young star athletes. Oswego saw major contributions from the likes of Catie Lilly, Chastin Giles, and Diamond Pickett throughout the course of the season and will look to build upon their performances from this season. The team will reload in the offseason and look towards the 2022-23 season, where they hope to make it back to the SUNYAC playoffs once again.

SUNY Oswego hires McManus as Director of Intercollegiate Athletics

OSWEGO, N.Y. — On Thursday, SUNY Oswego announced that the athletic department will have a new leader prior to the start of the 2021-22 academic year. Wendy McManus accepted the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics position that was previously filled by two interim athletic directors.

McManus joins the Lakers with administrative and coaching experience over multiple different positions and colleges.. Her 17 plus years of experience features managing facility improvements and developing corporate sponsorship opportunities. This most recently occurred at Elmhurst University (Illinois), a NCAA Division III college that has 20 varsity sports and 80 employees. Prior to her time with Elmhurst, McManus was the associate director of athletics for internal operations and senior women administrator at Minot State University (North Dakota). She worked on managing budget and facility development along with personnel management. McManus has also spent time as an associate director of athletics at the University of New Haven and Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Her coaching experience originates from University of the Southwest as head volleyball coach and continued onto Texas A&M International University. McManus is a member and mentor of the Women Leaders in College Sports as well as a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

McManus will be joining the department on August 1st, 2021 prior to the start of the highly anticipated return of fall sports at Oswego State. WTOP 10 will continue to provide coverage of all news regarding the Oswego State Lakers.

Oswego State men’s lacrosse extends win streak to seven, first time since 2012

OSWEGO, N.Y. — In the first ever meeting between the two programs, the Oswego State men’s lacrosse team defeated New Paltz 18-10 on Friday. With this victory, the Lakers extend their win-streak to seven games, their longest since the 2012 season.

It was another dominant offensive display from the Lakers, one that fans have been accustomed to seeing during this seven-game stretch. Oswego notched one on the board first with Corey O’Connor assisting Max Brodman, giving the home team an early lead. Shortly after, Lakers leading goal scorer Gavin Elston found the back of the net for his first goal of the afternoon. Following the Hawks first goal of the contest, Ryan Eccles set up Elston twice in less than a minute to put Oswego up 4-1. New Paltz would go onto score once more, but throughout the final 3:42 in the opening quarter, the duo of Eccles and Elston continued their stellar performance and put in two more goals. The Lakers went into the second quarter with a 6-2 lead, but O’Connor quickly extended the lead after gaining the opening draw control. Though, over the next seven minutes, New Paltz scored four unanswered goals. Eventually, Eccles found the back of the net for his second goal of the game, but the Hawks would go on to score with 22 seconds remaining in the quarter. Oswego went into halftime leading 8-7.

After being shut out in the third quarter by Potsdam earlier in the week, Oswego completely flipped the script in this game. Elston picked up his 23rd goal of the season off a Brodman assist with 13:31 on the clock. Three minutes later, Eccles got his hat-trick off another Brodman assist. Over the final ten minute of the third quarter, not only did Oswego continue hold New Paltz scoreless, but Brodman, Weston Gray, and Ryan Dumont all scored to make the score 13-7. This run virtually put the game out of reach for the Hawks as they could not go on a run to tie the game after this point. Both team went goal-for-goal to open up the final quarter, with Max Brodman collecting another two goals. He would go on to complete his hat-trick to give the Lakers a 16-9 lead with 6:16 left in regulation. New Paltz went on to score once more, but it wouldn’t be enough to overcome the large deficit. Oswego closed out the game with Liam Sexton scoring two fancy goals including a beautiful behind-the-back shot. The Lakers went on to win 18-10 and secured their third SUNYAC win of the season.

Not only was this the seventh straight win for the Lakers, it also marked the fifth straight game in which Oswego put up at least 18 points. Oswego was extremely efficient on offense throughout the day as they had a total of 11 player record at least one point. The team was well-rounded in other aspects of the game as well. The Lakers won more faceoffs (16-14), collected more ground balls (34-20), and had less turnovers (15-27). With this win, Oswego is now tied for first place in the SUNYAC with Cortland and Geneseo. The Lakers will have the opportunity to knock off at least one of those teams this week as they take on Geneseo under the lights. Faceoff is set for 7:00 p.m. on Friday at Geneseo.
