High school students from near and far traveled to Oswego on Saturday, October 28th, to visit SUNY Oswego’s Open House. The open house was hosted by the office of admissions.
The Open House gave students and families an opportunity to talk with faculty and explore the campus buildings including academic buildings, residence halls, and dining halls. Just over a hundred tables were set up in the Marano Campus Center. Students and parents had the chance to talk to representatives from financial aid, career services, athletics, international education, and experience-based education.
“The people are very friendly and i felt very welcomed here. the campus is very modern and beautiful so it was easy to find my way around,” High School Senior Allison Smith said.

Travel Ban Response

Oswego, NY – Oswego State President Deborah Stanley sent students and faculty members an email on Sunday morning in response to President Donald Trump’s recent executive order banning travel into the United States from seven Muslim majority countries including Iraq, Syria, and Iran for 90 days.
The ban affects both non-immigrants and immigrants as well as those with a student or scholar visa. Green card holders were originally affected by the ban. However, according the New York Times, that decision has been reversed.
“There is considerable uncertainty about its implications,” Stanley wrote. “We advise great caution on the part of our international students, faculty and staff to consider carefully any travel outside the country or consider deferring travel until there is more clarity about how the Executive Order will affect us.”
Oswego State does not have a study abroad or international education program in any of the seven countries. Stanley advises those who are from any of those countries and are either planning to travel or are currently outside of the United States to seek the advice of an immigration lawyer before making travel plans.
“SUNY Oswego has always been a welcome and hospitable home for international students and visitors since our founding over 150 years ago,” she wrote. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to international students, scholars and programs for the creativity, intellectual rigor and cultural diversity you bring to our campus.”
According to the New York Times, a federal judge partially blocked Trump’s ban on refugees and other foreign nationals who were being held at U.S. airports on Saturday night. Protests against the ban continue across the country.

Women’s Ice Hockey Suffers OT Exhibition Loss
Oswego State’s women’s ice hockey team began their season with a 4-3 overtime exhibition loss against the Toronto Midget Aeros on Saturday. The Lakers’ first regular season action will come on Friday when they face New England College in the Marano Campus Center Ice Arena.
During the first period, there was not much action between these two teams until Toronto’s Claudia Yu got the Midget Aeros on the board. Oswego would have an answer though, as they stormed back with two goals in the following period. At the center of those two scores was Jean-marie Padden who had a goal and an assist. That would not be all from her as she tallied another assist in the third period. The normal three periods would not be enough for this game though as it went into overtime, largely because of Toronto’s ability to capitalize on the power play. However, there would not be much extra hockey as the Midget Aeros were able to score the game winner just 57 seconds in. During power play opportunities, Toronto went 2-for-3 while the Lakers scored on one of four of their opportunities.
During the contest, Oswego gave all three of their goalies some playing time as Mariah Madrigal and Mikaela DiTonto notched nine saves while Amber Samonek tallied eight.

Mumps on Campus

Two SUNY Oswego students have contracted the mumps this semester. Vaccinations at the college are required for all students, but there is a 30-day period in the beginning of the semester before students have to provide the records of their immunizations. The first case of the mumps appeared on campus during this period, whereas the second case appeared this past week.
School health officials took the proper precautions once they were notified the virus was on campus.
“We notified administration […] the student was placed in isolation, and isolation is just a private room on campus, and the student went home until results and symptoms resolved,” said Angie Brown, Director of Health Service at Mary Walker Health Center at SUNY Oswego.
Other students on campus had mixed reactions to hearing the diagnosis of the mumps in their community.
“I was going to get everything and do everything I could to keep myself healthy and safe,” said senior Joe Governale.
Since the school is taking precautions, other students had different things to say.
“I was kind of worried at first, but I don’t think it is as serious as some people think it is,” said student Lauren Nevil.
Officials at Mary Walker say that the symptoms of the mumps start out similar to the common cold, but the distinguishing symptom between the two are very swollen cheeks and glands under the ears.
