Lakers baseball takes cares of business in weekend sweep

NEW PALTZ, NY –  The Oswego Lakers baseball team travelled to New Paltz, N.Y this weekend to play the New Paltz Hawks in a weekend series. The series started friday where the series started slow with both teams unable to score a run in the first two innings. Oswego the broke things open when in the top of the third inning the Lakers scored four runs. The inning started off with the Hawks walking Brian Brezosky.  The Hawks then matched the Lakers in the bottom of the third inning with four runs of their own. The offensive prowess continued when Tishawn Featherstone hit a homerun in the top of the fourth, bringing in two runs for the Lakers and giving them the lead again.

A single to left field by Blake VanDreason gave the Lakers a third run in the fourth inning, bringing in Parliment for his second score of the game.  The offensive showing kept coming as New Paltz earned  five runs in the bottom of the fourth and took a two run lead over the Lakers. Both teams then went quiet for four innings until Oswego scored 7 runs in the top of the eighth inning behind a home run by Jelani Hamer tying the game at 10.  Later in the inning, McCarthy hit a double to right field, bringing in two runners and the last run of the game would come from a sacrifice fly by Drew, which brought in Anthony Barone and gave the Lakers a 14-10 lead. The Lakers would shut out the Hawks for the rest of the game and win the game 14-10. Hamer led the Lakers at the plate, going four for six at-bat, earning three RBIs, scoring two runs, and hitting one home run.

The Lakers then moved to saturday where they had a doubleheader against the Hawks. In the first inning, the Hawks struggled on the mound walking three batters to give Oswego bases loaded with just one out.  Owen Parliment was at bat with one out and bases loaded, Parliament theb hit  a grand slam to put the Lakers up 4-0 early. In the top of the third, Parliment would come up to bat again with a runner on first. He would continue his big day hitting his second home run of the day giving the Lakers a six run lead. In the same inning Frank Levanti would double to third base bringing in another run for the Lakers. Jelani Hamer would continue his weekend giving Oswego a nine run lead with a sacrifice fly out to center field, Levanti was brought in by Hamer.  In the same inning t he Hawks walked Levanti  with the bases loaded which earned a run for Oswego, bringing in Parliment. Oswego had a ten run lead going into the fifth inning.

Oswego didn’t score again until the top of the seventh inning. Bringing in two RBIs off a single to left field was none other than Parliment. New Paltz could not get anything on the board as Oswego held on to get the 12-0 shutout victory over the Hawks in game one. Kieran Finnegan received the victory on the mound, recording seven strikeouts in five innings. Sean Clifford came in to replace Finnegan and recorded three strikeouts in two innings.  Parliament led the Lakers at the plate, going four for four on the day, hitting two home runs, earning eight RBIs, and scoring three runs as they head into game 2

It was the same theme for the Lakers in game two, jumping out to a commanding ten run lead in the first inning. Hamer hit a two-run home run to open up the scoring for Oswego, bringing in Brezosky. A double by Parliment set the Lakers up to score with runners on second and third. Jacob Levine earned two RBIs off a single to left field, giving the Lakers a four run lead. With runners on first and third, Greg Carullo  singled to left field, bringing in another runner for Oswego. Sam Allen gave the Lakers a six run lead with a single to center field, bringing in CJ Mccarthy. Oswego jumped out to an eight run t lead in the first off a single by Brezosky, bringing in two runners. The Hawks then walked in two and gained a ten run lead. The Hawks scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning, cutting the Laker lead to eight.

In the top of the second, Oswego earned just one run, coming from a wild pitch by the Hawks. New Paltz scored two runs in the bottom of the second, making the score 11 to 4. In the next inning, the Lakers added four more runs. The Hawks earned three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, giving them seven runs through four and Oswego scored their final run in the top of the sixth inning, with Featherstone scoring an unearned run from an error by New Paltz. The Hawks continued to climb back into the game, with a pair of runs earned in the bottom of the sixth inning, and one run in the bottom of the seventh. The Hawks trailed by six with two innings left. New Paltz scored their final run in the bottom of the eighth inning, falling to the Lakers by five. The final score was 16 Oswego, 11 New Paltz. Anthony Van Fossen got the win on the mound for game two, recording one strikeout in one inning. Six other pitchers saw the mound in game two, combining for a total of six strikeouts. Three Lakers tied with two hits each to lead Oswego at the plate. Those players were Brezosky, McCarthy, and Carullo. Brezosky earned two RBIs and one run, McCarthy earned one RBI and three runs, and Carullo earned one RBI and one run.

Oswego moves to .500 at 11-11 and  will stay on the road and take on the University of Rochester on Wednesday, April 12th.

Mens Baseball Sweeps Fredonia in Weekend Action

2022_Team_Photo ROCHESTER, NY – It was a successful weekend for the Lakers as they convincingly beat the Fredonia Blue Devils in both of their encounters this weekend. Game won was nothing short of a blowout that saw the Lakers dominate Fredonia with a final score of 12-1. The momentum was in favor of the Lakers from the start as they truly dominated this game. Fredonia would score their only run of the game in the top of the second inning. Senior Colin Williams was on fire this game as he finished with one run and two RBI’s. It really was a team effort however as the Lakers were firing on all cylinders from start to finish. The Lakers looked to take this momentum into the next day where they had a rematch against the Blue Devils.

The Lakers kept the momentum rolling the next day when they knocked off Fredonia for the second time. This game was a lot closer and saw both teams fighting hard for a victory. The Lakers started off hot scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Blue Devils weren’t going to let history repeat itself as they bounced right back tying the game in the third. The Lakers then went on to score three more runs and the game looked like it was shaping up to be another Lakers victory. Fredonia was not done however as they came right back and scored three more runs to tie the game at six. After this the game got out of hand with the Lakers completely taking over. Freshman Emil Sander would score the Lakers final run to give them a five run victory as the Lakers completed the weekend sweep. The Lakers look to keep this momentum rolling as they head to New Paltz this Friday at 3pm.

Baseball team loses in Marietta

MARIETTA, OHIO — The Oswego State Lakers took to the road over the holiday weekend to take on the Marietta College Pioneers in the NCAA Division Three Super Regionals. A tough test for the Lakers, as the Pioneers were ranked the number two team in the country by D3baseball.com at the end of the regular season and had easily run through their competition in the regional round. 

The first game of the weekend was postponed from Friday to Saturday due to the weather. When it started, Oswego was the team to strike first. A Paul Tammaro lead-off single was followed by a Ryan Enos walk. Both runners would steal the next base, and Lukas Olsson would ground out but drive in Tammaro in the process. Marietta quickly answered tying the game at one in the bottom of the first. Both teams were held scoreless through the second and third innings. Marietta took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Pioneers scored seven times in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead, all seven of the runs being unearned. Marietta scored twice more in the bottom of the fifth to get a 10-1 lead. Oswego got one back on a Ryan Enos double scoring Frank Levanti. Unfortunately, Marietta hit a three-run home run to extend the lead 13-2 in the bottom of the sixth. No runs would be scored during the rest of the game and Marietta took game one of the best of three set. Paul Tammaroand Jacob Levine shared the team’s hit lead with two each. Kieran Finnegan got the start for the Lakers. He went 3.2 innings, gave up eight hits and eight runs, only one being earned. He struck out two and walked one.

Game two was played Sunday. In the first two innings, both of the teams were held scoreless, but Marietta quickly changed that in the third. They scored six runs on only three hits. Two of the runs were unearned as the Lakers had three errors in the inning. In the bottom of the third, the Lakers scored one, Ryan Enos scoring on a Lukas Olsson single. The Pioneers scored five more runs in the top of the fourth, including a three-run home run. Marietta scored twice more in the top of the fifth. Another two-run home run in the top of the sixth gave Marietta a 15-1 lead. The Pioneers crossed the plate four more times in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, the Lakers scored four runs. Ryan Enos drove in one with a bases-loaded walk. Lukas Olsson drove in the other three with a double. Neither team scored in the ninth and Marietta moved on to the Division 3 World Series. Lukas Olsson led the team with three hits and four RBIs. Anthony Van Fossen got the start in game two for Oswego. He went 2.1 innings, giving up six runs, only four earned, on three hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.

The Lakers’ season ends with a 33-13 record. They went 16-2 in conference matchups. The team was led by second basemen Ryan Enos who had a .451 batting average, 21 doubles, a triple, 10 home runs, and 60 RBIs. Shortstop Paul Tammaro also had an extremely good year. He batted .444 with 16 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, and 26 RBIs. Centerfielder Kyle Lauria hit .345 with 12 doubles, three triples, five home runs, and 53 RBIs. First Baseman Ryan Weiss hit .315 with 11 doubles, ten home runs, and 38 RBIs. Pitcher Kieran Finnegan had thirteen starts for the Lakers, he pitched 75.2 innings pitched. he had a 2.97 ERA with a 1.33 WHIP, he pitched four complete games. He walked 17 and struck out 59, opponents hit .275 against him. Enos, Tammaro, Lauria, Weiss, and Finnegan all earned All-SUNYAC First-team honors. Pitcher Jacob Sanders, Catcher Lukas Olsson, and Designated Hitter Jacob Levine were all awarded All Second-Team honors. Freshman Tishawn Featherstone was awarded SUNYAC Freshman of the year.

Oswego baseball shines against St. John Fisher

Levine_BattingOSWEGO, N.Y.  – The boys went to work Tuesday in a battle against St. John Fisher. Ultimately the Lakers were more hungry for the win and came out on top. They had the momentum early on and were able to maintain this momentum  throughout the game. The Lakers went up by four runs after sophomore Jacob Levine hit one out of the park resulting in a three run homer. Levine had himself a day with a homer and four RBI’s. St. John Fisher would score six unanswered runs in two innings, ultimately taking a one run lead going into the bottom of the seventh. The Lakers were not going to let off the gas however as they answered right back with two runs after Lukas Olsson scored a two run homer to give the Lakers the momentum. Another three runs sealed the deal for the Lakers as they walked out with an 10-8 victory. The Lakers go on the road Friday to take on Fredonia in their final regular season series. The first matchup begins at 3:00pm.

Oswego State baseball wins biggest series of Year

OSWEGO N.Y. — The biggest and most anticipated series of the season finally came for the Lakers. The #5 ranked Cortland Red Dragons travelled up 1-81 to take on the Lakers at the Laker Baseball Stadium. The three game set started with game one Friday afternoon, and games two and three Saturday. 

Game one started fast, with the Red Dragons finding the scoreboard in the top off the first inning. A lead off single, was then moved to second on a sac bunt. The runner would score on an ensuing single, and the Red Dragons took an early 1-0 lead. In the top of the third the Red Dragons struck again. A lead off double would move to third on a pass ball in the next at bat. After a foul out, a fly out to center would be deep enough to score the runner and Cortland took a 2-0 lead. It was the bottom of the third when the Lakers finally struck. Paul Tammaro led off with a triple. Ryan Enos‘s double drove him home for the Lakers first run. After a strike out, Lukas Olsson hit a two run home-run to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead. After a scoreless fourth and fifth, the Red Dragons found the scoreboard again in the sixth. They crossed the plate three times, but the Lakers weren’t letting them keep it for long. A Ryan Weiss lead off homer got the scoring starting in the bottom of the sixth. Julian Drew then got hit by a pitch. Two groundouts moved Drew to third and he was brought home by a wild pitch. After a walk and a bunt single, Ryan Enos drove home the sixth run on a single to center. Cortland tied it a six in the top of the seventh. It took until the top of the tenth for any runs to be scored. A lead off single moved to second on a sac bunt. A double drove him home, and Cortland grabbed a 7-6 lead. In the top of the tenth, Frank Levanti reached on an error to start the inning. Paul Tammaro moved him to second on a sac bunt. A Ryan Enos walk put runners on first and second. Kyle Lauria grounded into a fielder’s choice putting runners at first and third for Lukas Olsson. Olsson walked it off with a three run bomb, Oswego winning 9-7. Paul Tammaro and Lukas Olsson led the team with three hits each. Olsson also led the team with 5 RBIs. Jacob Sanders got the start for the Lakers, throwing 5 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits and two walks, striking out three.

Game two of the series started just like the first, Cortland finding the scoreboard first. The first two batter of the inning would groundout, but three two-out singles brought home the first run of the game. Oswego answered right away. The first three batters for Oswego reached, loading the bases. A Lukas Olsson single brought home the first run for the Lakers, and the next at bat Ryan Weiss would clear the bases with a grand slam giving the Lakers a 5-1 lead after one. Cortland fought back in the second. The lead-off hitter reached on an error, and a home run in the next at bat brought the lead down to 5-3. In the bottom of the second, the first two batters would reach for Oswego. A Kyle Lauria single brought home the sixth run for the Lakers. After Lukas Olsson was intentionally walked, a passed ball brought home the seventh run. A few batters later, another passed ball brought home the final run if the inning for the Lakers. Cortland kept the pressure up in the third. A one-out grand slam brought the deficit down to 8-7. After all the fireworks of the first few frames, no runs were scored after the top of the third, and the Lakers won the seven inning game one of the double header. Paul Tammaro led the Lakers in hits, going 4-4 and scoring two runs. Ryan Weiss‘s four RBIs were enough to lead the Lakers. Kyle Finnegan got the start for Oswego, going 5.1 innings. He allowed eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits and two walks, striking out two. He was relieved by Ben Wilcox who pitched the final 1.2 innings allowing one hit and striking out three.

The final game of the series had the Lakers looking for their brooms going for the sweep. Unlike the previous two games, the first run wasn’t scored until the bottom of the fifth inning. Tim Shinto was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He would score in the next at bat on a series of errors by Cortland. Two consecutive walks would load the bases for Kyle Lauria who would also walk, to bringing home the second run. Lukas Olsson would follow the third consecutive walk with a grand slam, giving the Lakers a 6-0 lead. Cortland found their stride in the top of the sixth, bringing home four runs. Oswego scored two in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to 8-4. A scoreless seventh and eight led to the top of the ninth. A lead-off walk was followed by a two run homer, bringing the lead down to 8-6. Three straight walks, loaded the bases, and a wild pitch brought home the seventh run, with still no outs. Another walk reloaded the bases, before the Lakers finally got the first out on a strike out. A passed ball allowed the another runner to score, tying the game. A another strike out, was followed by a single, bringing home two, and Cortland took the lead 10-8. Oswego got two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn’t get them across the plate, and the late rally by Cortland getting them the win and avoiding a sweep. Three Lakers tied for the lead in hits with 2. Lukas Olsson led the way with six RBIs. Anthony Van Fossen got the start on the mound for Oswego. He pitched 5.2 innings, allowing four runs, all earned, on seven hits and no walks, striking out three.

The Lakers are now 24-8 (13-2 SUNYAC). Oswego has four games left this season, a mid-week matchup with #20 St. John Fisher at home, and final three game set with the Fredonia Blue Devils in Fredonia next weekend. As of May 3, the Lakers climbed up to #14 in the country, and Cortland fell to #13 after the losses to the Lakers.

Oswego State baseball goes 2-1 on Senior Day weekend

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State baseball team faced off against rival SUNY Brockport this weekend in a three-game series, winning the the first two contests 2-0 before dropping the final game 13-11. This was the first home series of the season for the Lakers after multiple games were either postponed or moved to a different location.

In Saturday’s Senior Day game, the Lakers celebrated a total of 12 seniors, including Ryan Enos who’s emerged as one of the best division III players in the country. However, game one of the series was mainly a battle between the pitchers — not something that was expected for these juggernaut offenses. The first five innings of the contest were scoreless with both teams combining for just four hits. It wasn’t until the sixth inning where a single from Julian Drew brought in Kyle Lauria for the Lakers first score. In the top of the seventh inning, the Golden Eagles hit one deep into center field, but Lauria tracked the ball down and made a tremendous diving catch to keep the game 1-0. Oswego carried this momentum into their next at-bat where Jacob Levine hit a double to help Blake Vandreason cross home plate. Oswego went on to win the Senior Day contest 2-0 with Jacob Sanders and Sean Dertinger allowing a total of two hits.

Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader started much the same as the first game of the series for the Lakers, retiring the first six Brockport batters. Though, unlike the prior contest, Oswego got their offense rolling early on as they took a two-run lead in the bottom of the first. Paul Tammaro, Enos, and Lauria all reached base with Ryan Weiss bringing home Enos off a single. Jacob Levine the singled opposite of Weiss to the right side, allowing Lauria to reach home plate. In the fourth inning, the Golden Eagles were in a threatening position with men on first and second. After a strikeout by Kieran Finnegan, the Lakers collected the third out of the inning on a line out to third base. Oswego was then able to shutout Brockport through the remaining innings and went on to win 2-0 once again. Finnegan moved to 5-0 on the season, allowing just three hits while facing 26 batters.

Game 2 of the Sunday doubleheader was completely night and day from the previous two games. Brockport struck first to take a 1-0 lead in the opening inning, with Oswego responding with three runs of their own in bottom of the first. After a leadoff walk by Tammaro, Enos advanced him to third with a huge double to left field. Lauria hit a sac fly to center field, which brought in Tammaro for their first run. Soon after, Ryan Weiss was walked and Enos stole third base in the process. Levine then took after Lauria and hit a sac fly to center field, bringing in Enos for the Lakers second run. After a CJ McCarthy walk, Julian Drew slung one to center field, pushing the Laker lead to 3-1. In the top of the third, Brockport cut the Oswego lead with a run of their own. After some back-and-forth stellar pitching, the Lakers put two more on the board in the fourth inning and another in the fifth, giving them a 6-2 lead. In the top of the sixth, the momentum began to swing Brockport’s way. The Golden Eagles racked up seven hits and brought in five runs to take the lead. Then in the seventh inning, Brockport put up two more runs, bringing the score to 9-6. Though, the onslaught wouldn’t stop there as the away team scored four more runs in the eighth inning to make the score 13-6. Oswego began to rally back in the final two innings, but were just able to muster five runs. Brockport took game three of the series by a score of 13-11.

Following the series, Oswego moves to 21-7 on the season and 11-1 in the SUNYAC Conference — tied for first with Cortland. The Lakers will have the chance to carry this momentum into their next game against Ithaca College before hosting Cortland at home next weekend. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday in Ithaca, NY.

Oswego State baseball hits this weekend out of the park

Tammaro1ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Oswego Lakers baseball team had quite the impressive weekend in they’re three games played. Saturday the Lakers had a double header where they sweeped SUNY Oneonta in impressive fashion. The first matchup was a 8-0 shutout with the Lakers having an answer for everything Oneonta threw their way. Senior Paul Tammaro led the charge with two runs scored on the day with two RBIs. Ryan Enos also had two runs on the day in a performance that is far from unexpected. Enos has proved to be an integral part of this Laker team. Pure domination is the only way to describe this game as Oneonta could get absolutely nothing going in this contest. Pitcher Jakob Sanders had six strikeouts on the day and only gave up one hit.

The next game was much of the same as this time only one run was scored for Oneonta, making the final score 7-1. Tammaro lead the large again in this contest as he was the lead scorer with two runs and two RBIs. Enos also had a run with two RBIs in this game. The Lakers weren’t able to get much going until late in the contest. Going into the top of the seventh, the score was 2-1 with the lakers sitting on a one point lead. They went on to score five runs in the seventh sealing this contest. They would then have one more contest with Oneonta the following day.

With Oneonta out for blood, this contest was much closer than the previous two. A slow start for the Lakers resulted in Oneonta having a three run lead early in the contest. The following inning the Lakers put up two runs when senior Ryan Weiss hit a two run homer that couldn’t have been more clutch. With the momentum back with the Lakers they began to fight 6-1 run the rest of the contest, resulting in a 8-6 victory. Weiss was the star player with three runs total and a homer on the day. The Lakers look to take this momentum into next week as they face Clarkson University at home this Tuesday in a double header. Games start at 2pm and 5pm. Catch it live on WTOP10!

Baseball sweeps with massive offensive output, loses series finale with Rochester

Oswego, N.Y. — The Oswego State baseball team took to the road to take on the Plattsburgh Cardinals for a three game set Monday and Tuesday, and had a their first home game Wednesday against the University of Rochester. The Lakers were coming off two non-conference losses, but were ready to turn it around and stay undefeated in SUNYAC play and avenge their loss to Rochester last week.  

The first game of Monday’s double header saw the Lakers take an early commanding lead. The Lakers grabbed two runs before an out was made, a third run cross the plate before the second out, and a Tishawn Featherstone three run shot saw the top of the first end 6-0. Kyle Lauria got his second RBI of the game in the second inning, with Lukas Olsson driving one of his own for runs seven and eight of the game. The Lakers had three more runs in the third and led 11-0. A scoreless fourth was followed by Oswego getting one more in the fifth, and the Cardinals finally answering with one of their own in the bottom half. In the sixth, Tishawn Featherstone got his second home run of the game, a solo shot, Ryan Enos drove in two more with a double, and Kyle Lauria hit a two run homer to give the Lakers a 17-1 lead. The seventh inning was when the Cardinals finally found their stride, scoring five of their six in the game. The Lakers got two more in the top of the ninth, and won the game 19-6. Anthony Van Fossen pitched five innings, striking out six in the game. Kyle Lauria had a game high five RBI’s and five hits in the game.

Game two of the double header saw Plattsburgh find the scoreboard first. A scoreless first inning and top of the second was followed by the Cardinals grabbing two runs in the bottom half. Oswego would answer with one in the third inning. The fourth was when Oswego finally found the lead. With the bases loaded, Ryan Enos would reach on a fielders choice and one run would score and tie the game. A Kyle Lauria single to right would score the leading run. A double steal with Lauria and Enos saw Lauria get second and Enos steal home. The Lakers left the inning with a 4-2 lead. The fifth and sixth innings were scoreless. In the top of the seventh, the Lakers grabbed four more runs, and the Lakers won 8-2. Kieran Finnegan pitched all seven innings for Oswego, striking out 10, with only five hits and one walk. Kyle Lauria again led the Lakers in RBIs with three, with Ryan Enos, Paul Tammaro, and Tishawn Featherstone each scoring two runs.

The final game of the series was played on Tuesday. The first inning was again scoreless. Oswego got their first three runs of the game in the second, with Plattsburgh answering with one of their own. The third was led off with a CJ McCarthy solo shot, and Paul Tammaro would drive on the Lakers fifth later in the inning. Oswego got one more in the fourth, Kyle Lauria scoring on a wild pitch. The Cardinals crossed the plate for the second time in the bottom of the fifth, but Ryan Weiss would drive in two more for the Lakers in the sixth to extend their lead to 8-2. The Cardinals got three in the bottom of the seventh, but once again Oswego answered the following frame, scoring nine in the top of the eighth to extend the lead to 17-5, which would be the final score of the game. Ryan Weiss was the Lakers RBI leader with four, as well as leading the team in hits with four. Tyler Pecchia started the game for the Lakers, going four inning, striking out, allowing four hits, and one unearned run. He was relieved by Connor VanDreason, who went two innings in relief, and got the win for the game.

A Wednesday afternoon set with the University of Rochester Yellowjackets was game four of a busy week for the Lakers. The second and final matchup of the year between the two sides saw Rochester get on the board before the Lakers could even get an at bat. A leadoff home run got the Yellowjackets on the board early. A two-out single later in the inning drove in two more, and Rochester had a 3-0 lead after just half an inning. In the bottom of the second, a Julien Drew single brought home CJ McCarthy and got the Lakers on the board. Innings three through five were scoreless, and in the top the sixth, Rochester found the scoreboard once more. An error in right allowed a runner to score from third, and Rochester had a 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Lakers would strike for two more and bring the game to 4-3. The eighth was scoreless, and the game would be called before the ninth due to lightning. Ryan Enos led the Lakers with two hits and two RBIs, CJ McCarthy drew two walks in the game and got a hit. Sean Dertinger started the game for Oswego, going five innings, allowing four runs three earned, striking out four, walking two, and giving up five hits. The Laker bullpen shut down the Yellow Jackets, only allowing one hit after the fifth.

Oswego now has a 16-6 (5-0 SUNYAC) record. They are the 21st ranked team in the country. They have a three game set with the Oneonta Red Dragons in Oneonta starting Friday with a double header.

Baseball loses two non-conference games

Rochester N.Y. — The Oswego State baseball team took a trip to Rochester to take on two non-conference opponents, The University of Rochester and St. John Fisher College. The first game was on Tuesday against the Rochester Yellowjackets. Oswego got started early, a one out home run by Ryan Enos in the top of the first saw them grab the 1-0 lead. Rochester wasn’t letting the Lakers get comfortable though, and in the bottom of the first they led off with back-to-back walks and then a three run home run left. A double later in the inning drove one more home, and the Yellowjackets had a 4-1 to start the second frame. The bottom of the second saw Rochester grab two more runs on a two-out, bases loaded single. The Lakers found the scoreboard again in the third, a lead of double followed by a hit-by-pitch brought Kyle Lauria to the plate. He would hit it out and drop the deficit to 6-4. In the bottom of the fourth the Yellowjackets drove in one more to extend their lead to 7-4, and in the bottom of the fifth they would tally their eighth and final run of the game. Innings six through nine were scoreless, and the Lakers were handed their fourth loss of the season. A total of eight batters were hit in the game, four by each side. 

The Lakers road trip in Rochester continued on Wednesday with a 3 P.M. matchup with the St. John Fisher Cardinals. A scoreless first inning was followed by five run bottom of the second for the Cardinals. A one out RBI single got the first run, a walk would load the bases, and then another walk brought in the second. After an out, a third walk of the inning drove in the third walk, and a single drove in runs for and five. The Lakers answered the following frame, a bases loaded, two-out double by Lukas Olsson cleared the bases and got the Lakers up to a 5-3 deficit. The Lakers tied it in the fourth. Ryan Enos was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to bring in the fourth run, and a Kyle Lauria walk brought home the fifth of the game for the Lakers. A scoreless fifth, was followed by the Lakers grabbing a single run in the top of the sixth. St. John Fisher tied it in the bottom of the eight at six on a solo shot to left. The Lakers wouldn’t score in the top of the ninth. The Cardinals led of the bottom of the ninth with a walk. The runner advanced to second on a passed ball, and was then driven in on a walk-off double, 7-6. Lukas Olsson led the Lakers with three RBIs, Kyle Lauria had two, and Ryan Enos driving in the final one.

The Lakers next matchup comes on the road against the Plattsburgh Cardinals for a three game set. Game one played on Friday, the other two played Saturday. The team now sits at a 13-5 (3-0 SUNYAC).

Baseball opens SUNYAC play with weekend series sweep

Endwell N.Y. — The Oswego State baseball team took to the road this weekend to take on the New Paltz Hawks for a three game set to open their SUNYAC play. They played two games Saturday, winning both, and took the series topper on Sunday. Saturday’s first game saw the Hawks grab an early 2-0 lead. A lead of single and then a one out walk got two men on the base paths, a two out double drove both runs home. The Lakers finally found their swings in the third inning. Back to back one out doubles saw the Lakers grab their first run of the inning. After a fly out, an error on the Hawks saw the second runner get home. A walk followed by a single and another walk saw the Lakers load the bases, and then Julien Drew would send them all home with a grand slam. They Lakers ended the inning with the lead 6-2. The next inning saw the Lakers put three more on the score board. A lead off double, followed by walk and single saw the Lakers load the bases for the second inning in a row. Julien Drew would come back up to the plate with two out and this time hit a double to drive in three, his fifth, sixth, and seventh RBI’s of the day. In the fifth Ryan Enos would drive out his sixth homer of the season, this one a two run shot, to put the Lakers up 11-2. Oswego got another run in the sixth. In the seventh the Lakers would hit another two run shot and drive in a third to put the lead to 13, 15-2. Oswego’s staters, Anthony Van Fossen, was relieved to start the eighth, he gave up six hits, two runs, and walked three. With Van Fossen out of the game, New Paltz found a grove. Back to back singles, followed by a single loaded the bases with none out in the inning. A fielder’s choice at third saw one run cross the plate, and left men at first and second. Another fielders choice saw the Hawks have men at first and third with two outs. A single scored one, and that was followed by bunt to load the bases. A passed ball saw their fifth run score, and a wild pitched scored their sixth. No runs would be scored for the rest of the game and Oswego won, 15-6. Oswego finished the game with 20 hits, six doubles, and three homeruns. 

Game two of the double header was a the exact opposite of game one. The Lakers were the first to find the scoreboard. Paul Tammaro led off with a walk for the Lakers. New Paltz got two outs, but Tammaro stole second and third in the process, he scored on single. Both teams went scoreless on through the top of the fifth. In the bottom half, Ryan Enos led off with a walk, he moved to second on a Kyle Lauria single, and scored on Lukas Olsson double to left, for the Lakers second run. The Lakers held the Hawks scoreless over the final two innings and won 2-0 in the seven inning bout. The Lakers were held to four hits, but walked six times. Paul Tammaro stole four bases in the game. New Paltz was held to three singles and a lone walk in the game.

The third game of the series was played Sunday. The Lakers grabbed the early lead again in this game. A Ryan Enos single in the bottom of the first followed by a Kyle Lauria walk brought Lukas Olsson to the plate. He smacked a double into left and drove in both runners for the 2-0 lead. A one-two-three top of the second was followed by a lead off double by Jacob Levine in the bottom half. A single moved him to third, and he scored on a double-play. The Lakers kept their momentum going and Paul Tammaro singled with two outs. He moved to third on an error, and Enos walked to have runners at first and third. Lauria tripled driving in both, and he then scored on an Olsson single. Oswego left the inning up 6-0. New Paltz grabbed one in the third, but Oswego answered with one of their in the bottom half. A scoreless fourth was followed by a five run fifth for the Lakers, a CJ McCarthy three run shot, and a Lauria two run single. Oswego also got one in the sixth, a lead off solo homer by Sam Allen. The Hawks got their second run in the top of the seventh. New Paltz got one in the top of the eight, and in the bottom of the eight, Oswego grabbed one more too. The game ended with Oswego winning 14-3. Oswego had 18 hits and seven walks in the game. Kyle Lauria led the team with four RBIs, with Lukas Olsson and CJ McCarthy both having three.

The Lakers now have a 13-3 (3-0 SUNYAC) record. They are currently 20th in the national poll. Their next game is Wednesday against St. John Fisher in Rochester, and that’s followed by three game set with the Plattsburgh Cardinals on Friday and Saturday.

Oswego State baseball DOMINATES this weekend

WINCHESTER, V.A. — The Oswego State baseball team took a road trip to play in three contests in Virginia this weekend. The first game against Keystone was an absolute massacre as Oswego poured on twenty-seven runs by the end of the contest. The Lakers managed to score in every inning besides the fourth, and managed to ball out with twenty-three hits throughout the game. The most notable performance of this game was from senior Ryan Enos who shattered program records by cranking three homers, six total hits and five runs. A performance highly unlikely to be matched anytime soon. Graduate Student Lukas Olsson also scored five runs this game. Senior Leadoff batter Paul Tammaro proved why he has that role as he three for four with four runs scored as he had his first homerun of the season. Additionally Tammaro had 3 RBI’s. Center fielder Kyle Lauria scored 3 runs on the night in another impressive showing. Everyone got a chance to eat in this contest as this was the definition of a statement victory. The final score was 27-14. The Lakers would then take on Shenandoah University.

The Lakers had another dominant victory against Shenandoah University with the final score being 9-2. Senior Paul Tammaro was an absolute monster in this game hitting two homers in his first two at bats contributing to the Lakers early three run lead. Shenandoah did manage to score two runs, but the contest was never close. Graduate Student Ryan Weiss went 2-5, however both his were RBI’s giving Oswego some breathing room. Freshman Tishawn Featherstone and senior Ryan Enos both had RBI’s to seal this contest. On the mound, senior Kieran Finnegan had a fantastic day with ten total strikeouts. He managed to only let in two runs in six innings. The Lakers would face Shenandoah again the following day.

The Lakers completed the weekend sweep against Shenandoah. Sundays contest was much closer than the first encounter with a final score of 10-8. Similar to the last game Oswego went up early scoring four runs in the first two innings. Graduate student Lukas Olsson was a huge name in todays performance hitting 3 RBI’s. Per usual senior Ryan Enos had a day scoring two runs as well as an RBI. Other notable performances include  graduate student Kyle Lauria who scored his first homer of the season as well as two RBI. Paul Tammaro also had himself a day with one run and an overall impressive performance. Shenandoah gave the Lakers a run for their money, however the Lakers stayed calm under pressure and got the job done, completing the weekend sweep. The Lakers take this momentum into next week as they play seven games in Florida. The first contest is against Ramapo College March 13th at 10:30am.

Oswego State baseball team returns to action against Salisbury

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego Baseball team made their return over the week on with three contests. They faced off in two games Saturday against the nationally ranked Salisbury. These two contests were wildly different in outcomes. Their first game of the season was a rough one, with oswego giving up fifteen runs in a 15-2 loss. The Lakers scored a run in the first inning when graduate student Kyle Lauria stole second, leading to senior Ryan Enos putting the Lakers on the board. It was all downhill from there as the Lakers were only able to score one more run in the third inning when Ryan Enos scored his second run of the day.

The second matchup ended with a much better outcome for the Lakers as they found a way to come out with the victory. It was another rocky start for the Lakers as they were down by two runs after the first three innings. The Lakers were not even close to finished as they had a score to settle with Salisbury. A double by senior Julian Drew gave the Lakers a golden opportunity to get on the board. After a pitch sailed past the catcher the Lakers were able to cut the lead down to one. Another score at the top od the sixth by senior Ryan Weiss tied the game up at two a piece. Weiss had a dominant performance in this game, and came in clutch in the top of the ninth inning. Weiss had a base hit that set up senior Ryan Enos for a crunch time run, giving the Lakers a 3-2 lead. Pitcher Ben Wilcox would seal Salisbury’s fate in the bottom of the ninth. The Lakers would have the rubber match Sunday afternoon.

The Lakers battled it out in a hard fought game Sunday, but ultimately came out on the losing end. Despite being right in it until the very end, they ultimately lost 6-5. Oswego was on the board first at the top of the third when sophomore Brian Brezosky scored after a single that got him to the plate. The fifth inning was action packed as the Lakers scored 3 runs to give them a 4-1 lead. Salisbury answered right back though, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Later in the top of the seventh, Kyle Lauria would score his second run of the day after capitalizing on a botched pitch. Unfortunately this would be the Lakers last run of the contest as Salisbury went on to score a run in the bottom of the seventh, eighth, and ninth inning to seal their one run victory. Oswego walked out with one win this weekend but showed signs of greatness after going against top ranked Salisbury. The Lakers take a trip to Virginia to face Shenandoah University this Saturday and Sunday. Time is TBD.

Oswego State Falls to Cortland in SUNYAC Championship

CORTLAND, N.Y. — In a thrilling three game SUNYAC Baseball Championship Series that featured 11 lead changes between the two teams, the Oswego State Baseball team was defeated by Cortland. Oswego took game one from Cortland in a late comeback fashion, but Cortland won game two in extra innings and game three to take the series. Cortland outscored Oswego 25-23 between the three games, which featured one run wins for each team in games one and two and a two run win for Cortland in the deciding game.

Game one was tied 2-2 after four innings, Kieran Finnegan had some early command issues surrendering four walks which resulted in two runs in the first inning while allowing just one hit in the frame. Finnegan bounced back well, giving up no hits in the next three innings and just one walk. Oswego’s two runs came in the top of the second on a Hunter Holliday RBI double and Julian Drew RBI single. Cortland put up two runs on four hits against Finnegan in the 5th which led to Anthony Van Fossen entering the game for the Lakers. Van Fossen was brilliant out of the bullpen as the junior threw 3.1 hitless innings for the Lakers. SUNYAC RBI leader Kyle Lauria trimmed the deficit to one run with an RBI single in the 7th, and the Lakers kept going with a big two out rally in the 8th. Oswego scored three runs in the 8th as Myles Felton scored on a wild pickoff throw to tie it, Brendon Frank singled in Paul Tammaro, and Ryan Enos followed with an RBI double to score Frank. Mike Di Salvo came in to pitch the 9th but gave up a leadoff home run to make it a one run lead for the Lakers. Di Salvo had the tying run on third base, and the winning run on second with no outs but got back to back flyouts to finish the 7-6 game one Oswego win.

The highest scoring game of the weekend came in an 11-10 extra inning walk off win for Cortland. Game two featured 31 total hits and three home runs for each team, as it was Tammaro, Ryan Weiss, and Felton each hitting long balls for the Lakers. At least one team scored in all ten innings, as Cortland had a four run and multiple three run frames scoring in bunches, but Oswego scored more consistently with one or two runs in seven of the ten innings. Frank and Weiss led Oswego’s offense as both of the seniors contributed four hits apiece. After ten innings and a ton of offense, it was Scott Giordano from Cortland with a walkoff home run forcing a decisive game three the following day.

Oswego and Cortland had identical runs scored in each frame from the 1st to 4th, as the game was tied 5-5 after four innings. Oswego scored one in the top of the 5th but Cortland answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame that would be the tying and eventual winning run, before tacking on an insurance run in the 6th. Enos was 3-4 with a home run, a double, and 4 RBIs in the final game of the series but it was not enough as Cortland took game three 8-6 to win the SUNYAC Championship. 

The season is not over yet for Oswego as the Lakers got an at-large bid into the 48 team NCAA Division III Baseball Championship. There are eight separate locations with six teams at each site; the winning team from each of the eight sites will compete in the Division III World Series in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Oswego was selected to be the second seed at the Hartford, Connecticut Region which is being hosted by Trinity College (Connecticut), a team that Oswego was scheduled to play against earlier this year. The teams in order of seeds 1-6 playing at the Hartford Regional are Southern Maine, Oswego State, Wheaton (Massachusetts), Salve Regina, Husson, Johnson & Wales (Providence). This is Oswego’s sixth consecutive season qualifying for the Championship, and the Lakers are looking for their first World Series appearance since 2018. Games will take place Thursday, May 27th through Sunday, May 30th and Oswego will play their first game at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Oswego State Baseball Team Sweeps Plattsburgh State to Conclude Regular Season

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The #22 ranked Oswego State Baseball team finished the 2021 regular season victorious as they defeated Plattsburgh State in consecutive games on Sunday. The Lakers now move to 21-3 on the season and will look ahead towards their best-of-three semifinals matchup versus SUNY Oneonta.

Oswego was dominant in both contests, defeating the Cardinals 16-2 in game one and 13-3 in game two. The Lakers had 20 hits in the first game, led by Paul Tammaro and Dylan Frawley who each had three. Junior outfielder, Tim Shinto, had a great performance as he totaled 4 RBIs off 2 hits. Anthony Van Fossen also finished his season 4-0 after shutting out the Cardinals in five innings. Game two ended in similar fashion with Brendon Frank, Kyle Lauria, and Myles Felton combining for 7 hits in their final regular season game. Junior pitcher, Kieran Finnegan, finished his season 5-0 following his 4-inning performance. With Sunday’s victories, the Lakers improve their win streak vs the Cardinals to 15-0 dating back to 2014. Prior to the pair of games, the Oswego State Baseball team recognized ten seniors including Mike Di Salvo, Jake Terrill, Jonathan Luppens, Hunter Holliday, Ronald Loomis, Connor Stanton, Myles Felton, Kyle Lauria, Brendon Frank, and Dylan Frawley.

Oswego had previously locked up the #1 seed in the SUNYAC West division and will now set their focus on their upcoming playoff matchup versus Oneonta. The teams last played in a May 6th doubleheader resulting in a 19-5 Laker win and a 5-2 Red Dragon win. The best-of-three series is set for Saturday, May 15th starting at noon. The second game is scheduled for 3 p.m. an if necessary, game three will be played on Sunday at noon.

Oswego State Baseball Splits with Oneonta in SUNYAC Crossover

ONEONTA, N.Y. — The Oswego State Lakers baseball team traveled to Oneonta thursday for a doubleheader SUNYAC crossover matchup against the Red Dragons. Oswego would only be able to secure one of the possible two wins today by taking the first game in dominant fashion by a score of 19-5 but then falling in the second game 5-2.

In the first game it was all Lakers as they were up 6-3 after three innings and up 8-3 after four. Oswego’s bats would continue to remain hot by propelling 6 runs in the seventh inning to put them up 17-5. Led by senior Ryan Enos he was able to hit for a pair of doubles and a home run. However not only the upperclassmen came out to shine in the first game, freshman Jacob Levine was able to provide 4 RBI’s for Oswego as well. Moving on to the second game Oneonta was able to edge the lakers by a score of 5-2. Oswego would not have the hot offense in this matchup only generating 2 runs in seven innings as well as only 5 hits. The Red Dragons were able to jump off early by getting three runs in the first three innings including two individual home runs in the third. Brandon Frank and Julian Drew were the only Lakers to generate RBI’s. Looking on the other end at the mound, Oneonta senior pitcher Michael Losak was able to steal the show and throw 120 pitches in a complete game to carry them to the win. 

Oneonta now sits at 11-9 overall this season with the split and 6-8 in the SUNYAC East division and currently are in second . The team looks forward to Saturday for a doubleheader against another west division foe in the Brockport Golden Eagles with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. As for the Lakers, they have now gone 2-2 in their last 4 to move to 19-3 overall and 12-2 in the SUNYAC and secure the first place seed in the West division. They will look to bounce back on track with a double header on Saturday as well against an East division opponent in the Plattsburgh Cardinals who have not won in Oswego since 2014. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. for the first game and approximately 3:00 p.m. for the 2nd game. Both games will be played at the Laker Baseball Field.

Oswego State Baseball Bounces Back in Doubleheader

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Baseball team split with the Clarkson Golden Knights on Tuesday afternoon at Laker Baseball Field. This was Oswego’s first loss since April 3rd which was against the Brockport Golden Eagles. Clarkson was able to take game one 12-9 after scoring eight runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Lakers bounced back in game two to get the doubleheader split. Oswego won 11-8 to secure their seventeenth win of the 2021 season. However, the Lakers win streak was snapped and ended after sixteen consecutive victories coming against SUNYAC and non-conference opponents.

The first contest featured Oswego getting out to an 8-0 lead through the first two innings. This due to Paul Tammaro, Brendon Frank, Kyle Lauria, and Myles Felton all had RBI hits to start the game off strong. Jake Terrill represented the Lakers on the mound for a majority of the game, pitching for over five innings which featured five strikeouts. Jonathan Luppens and Thomas Pecchia would also see time on the mound during game one. Clarkson shot back in the top of the fifth inning with two runs to get on the board. The Golden Knights would add to their total in the sixth inning with eight runs to take over the lead from the Lakers. Oswego was unable to get any more after the bottom of the sixth and Clarkson would snag two more insurance runs before the completion of the game.

Game two had a similar storyline with a different result as the Oswego State Lakers were able to maintain the lead over the course of the contest after a strong start in the first two innings. The Lakers got the game started with Lauria hitting a 3-run homerun and Felton adding his own in the second inning. Clarkson once again were alive innings later as the Golden Knights tallied seven runs over the course of the fourth and fifth inning. Oswego would remain with the lead and add to their totals with two insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to finish the contest.

The Lakers now look ahead to Oneonta this afternoon with a cross-over doubleheader in Oneonta. This will consist of the 64th and 65th meetings between the two teams and Oswego having the lead record with 38-25 versus Oneonta. The last time these two teams met was in the SUNYAC semi final two years ago in May of 2019 where the Lakers would edge the Red Dragons 5-2.

These games have large implications for the Red Dragons as they currently are in second place in the East division with two games in hand on the New Paltz Hawks who are currently at 5-9. As for Oswego, they currently sit at the top of the West division at 11-1 and 6 points ahead of the 8-4 Brockport Golden Eagles. As for the Red Dragons, their most recent matchup they were swept by the New Paltz Hawks on this past Saturday by scores of 1-0 and 6-3 as they look to get punch their ticket to the SUNYAC playoff. 

Oswego will look towards their veteran leadership with players such as Ryan Weiss who had 3 runs and two hits in his last matchup as well as junior Paul Tammaro who had 3 runs and 4 hits in his last two games. For Oneonta they are looking towards their younger studs such as sophomore Jake Barrett who leads the team in hits and is tied for first in runs as well as fellow sophomore Sean Liquori who is also tied for first in runs with 14 and is tied for second in hits with 16. First pitch for the first game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Oneonta with the second game expected to start around 4:00 p.m.

Oswego State Baseball Looks to Tie Record

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Baseball team will face off against Clarkson for the second time this season on Tuesday, May 4th. The Lakers have a chance to tie their win streak record that was set at eighteen victories back during the 1982 season as the group heads into the doubleheader with a sixteen straight wins. Oswego comes into the contest with a 17-1 overall record and is undefeated in non-conference matchups this season. The Golden Knights of Clarkson enter the doubleheader with a 12-13-1 record and is currently coming off a split with conference opponent RIT.

Clarkson and Oswego have already met up in Potsdam this season as the Lakers were able to get a sweep on the road back in April. The 17-13 and 9-4 wins were momentum boosters as multiple Lakers were able to get hits against the Golden Knights. Since those two games, Clarkson has gone 4-5-1, all games against Liberty League opponents. Since April 14th, Oswego has been able to take sole possession of first place in the SUNYAC West division. Today’s doubleheader will give the two teams a chance to take a break from conference opponents and build momentum for the final stretch of the season. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m. and game two is tentatively set for 4:00 p.m. from Laker Baseball field.

Oswego State Baseball Continues Win Streak Against University of Rochester

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Oswego State Baseball extended their win streak to fourteen games with a doubleheader sweep over University of Rochester on Tuesday, April 27th in a non-conference doubleheader. Oswego was dominant all day long as the Laker bats scored 32 runs total on the day, Oswego won game one 23-7 and completed the sweep with a 9-4 victory in game two.

Oswego scored multiple runs in five of eight innings they came to the plate in game one. Ryan Weiss opened up the scoring on a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning, and Connor Stanton added an RBI single to make it 5-0 before Rochester’s fourth batter stepped to the plate. Eleven Laker batters had at least one hit in game one, and Ryan Enos led the offense in hits as he was 3-4 with three runs and three RBIs. Weiss led with four RBIs all of which came on the grand slam, and Enos and Stanton added three RBIs each. Oswego took game one 23-7 as the bats came out hot to knock off the top ranked Liberty League team 23-7.

Game two featured two hit efforts from five separate Lakers, Paul Tammaro, Brendon Frank, Kyle Lauria, Hunter Holliday, and Frank Levanti. Two RBIs apiece were also added by Tammaro, Frank, Lauria and Weiss on his second home run of the day. Jake Terrill got the start in game two and the Graduate Student pitched very well, going six innings allowing four hits and two earned runs. Oswego took game two 9-4 to extend the win streak to fourteen games and complete the seventh straight doubleheader sweep.

Oswego baseball returns to Laker Baseball Field Saturday, May 1st at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. against SUNYAC West opponent Fredonia. The Lakers will look to their momentum to continue their dominance in the conference division.

Oswego State Baseball Gets Set For Non-Conference Doubleheader

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Oswego State Baseball looks to extend their twelve game win streak and remain undefeated at home on Tuesday, April 27th at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. against the University of Rochester. Oswego took sole possession of first place in the SUNYAC West with a doubleheader sweep over Brockport on Saturday, April 24th, and the Lakers now have a 9-1 conference record. This non-conference matchup could extend the win streak as the Lakers continue to ride this momentum into the later part of the season.

Oswego has not lost a game since the first day of the season back on April 3rd, and ever since that loss the Lakers have been dominant. Oswego is outscoring opponents 155-85 and winning games by an average of five runs on the season. Five of the top eleven on base percentage (OBP) leaders in the SUNYAC are in the deep Laker lineup. Paul Tammaro and Ryan Enos are back to back in second and third, Myles Felton is in fifth, and Kyle Lauria and Ryan Weiss are tenth and eleventh in the stat. While he is highly unlikely to pitch Tuesday after throwing six innings on Saturday, Kieran Finnegan won SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week last week.

Rochester comes in at 16-5 and 10-2 in the Liberty League which is good for first place as the Yellowjackets have looked sharp all season long. Rochester and Oswego were scheduled to meet Thursday, April 22nd in Rochester but that doubleheader was canceled and Tuesday’s doubleheader will be the only day the two teams meet this season. Oswego and Rochester have met once in each of the past three full seasons, the Lakers winning all three meetings.

Oswego takes the field Tuesday, April 27th for a non-conference doubleheader against Rochester at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. at home. The Lakers will look to continue the momentum of the current twelve game win streak as the team gets closer to the nationwide Top 25.

Oswego State Baseball Sweeps Brockport to Take First Place

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Oswego State Baseball had a pivotal doubleheader on Saturday, April 24th at Laker Baseball Field. Oswego and Brockport came into the day at 7-1 and tied for first place in the SUNYAC West standings, each squad was also carrying a ten game win streak. Oswego took care of business as the Lakers swept the doubleheader by scores of 14-13 and 7-2, taking sole possession of first place in the SUNYAC West. 

Game one had a plethora of runs, hits and errors, as the Brockport line read 13 runs on 17 hits and six errors, and Oswego’s line score read 14 runs on 11 hits and four errors, as the Lakers would take game one. Game one was a back and forth marathon that would go three hours and 45 minutes. Oswego led 7-2 heading into the fifth of nine innings, but Brockport hit two separate three run home runs to take the lead 8-7 in the fifth, and another two run homer coming in the sixth to make it 10-7. Oswego showed heart and fought back in the bottom of the sixth and seventh which featured a two RBI double from Ryan Weiss to make the game 10-9, and Weiss would score on an error to make it 10-10 in the sixth. Ryan Enos scored in the seventh to take the lead on a wild pitch, and Weiss as well as Kyle Lauria scored on an error to make it 13-10. Brockport tied it up at 13 in the top of the eighth, but Lauria hit a sacrifice fly that scored Paul Tammaro in the bottom of the eighth that would be the game winning run. Brockport had a runner on third with one out in the top of the ninth, looking to tie the game but a Tammaro to Enos to Weiss double play secured the 14-13 victory for the Lakers. 

Game two would be nothing like the high scoring affair of game one, as it was a pitchers duel between Kieran Finnegan for the Lakers and Tommy Kretzler for Brockport in a seven inning contest. The game was one to one heading into the sixth, Brockport’s run coming on a first inning solo home run by Kretzler who was the designated hitter as well as pitcher, and a Myles Felton sacrifice fly in the second was the lone run for Oswego. Oswego opened the floodgates in the bottom of the sixth, scoring six runs on six hits in the frame. Brendon Frank doubled and Enos walked as the first two batters of the inning, and Lauria would bring both teammates in on a two RBI triple to swing the momentum to the Lakers. Weiss hit a sac fly that scored Lauria, and Felton hit a single that would mark the end of Kretzler’s day. Felton stole a couple bases allowing Frank Levanti to bunt Felton in from third, and Hunter Holliday tripled in Jonathan Luppens to make it 6-1. The final run of the inning came courtesy of a Tammaro single to make it 7-1 heading into the final frame. Brockport would score a run to make it 7-2, but Finnegan’s final line read 6 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs and 5 strikeouts for the junior who is emerging as the ace of this Lakers team.

Oswego improves to 13-1 overall and 9-1 conference and takes sole possession of first place in the SUNYAC West with the doubleheader sweep. Brockport falls to 7-3 in the conference and now holds second place in the division over Fredonia. Oswego returns to action Tuesday, April 27th for a 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. doubleheader against non conference opponent University of Rochester.

Oswego State Baseball Sweeps Fredonia in SUNYAC Doubleheader

FREDONIA, N.Y. — Oswego State Baseball extended their win streak to 10 games with a doubleheader sweep at Fredonia on Tuesday, April 20th by scores of 8-5 and 10-5. With the two wins, Oswego improves to 11-1 on the season, and 7-1 in SUNYAC play which ties the Lakers for first place in the SUNYAC West with Brockport. Fredonia would stay in third with a 0-10 conference record.

Home runs powered the Laker offense in game one, with five of the eight runs scored by the Lakers coming courtesy of the long ball. Paul Tammaro and Myles Felton would both pick up their first home runs of the season, as they led the Lakers with two hits apiece in game one. Tammaro hit a two run homer in the 4th inning to pick up his 2nd and 3rd RBIs of the day, and Felton would make it back to back, following it up with a solo shot of his own to put the Lakers ahead 6-0 after four innings. Jai Sharma gave up four hits in five innings of work in similar fashion to his first start, but Sharma would not allow a run in this outing and also struck out eight. Fredonia put up five runs in the bottom of the 7th to make it 6-5 with the Lakers in the lead, but Dylan Frawley picked up some insurance runs with a two run home run in the top of the 8th to put the game away, and help give the Lakers a 8-5 win.

Oswego came out hot in game one putting up five runs in the top of the 1st inning. Ryan Weiss picked up an RBI single, and Weiss would touch the plate as well on a Julian Drew grand slam that put the Lakers ahead 5-0 before Fredonia got their first at bats of game two. Tammaro picked up an RBI single in the 4th as a part of his 3-3 game two. Oswego led 10-1 after five innings, but Fredonia made another comeback in the form of a five run 7th inning, but the nine run deficit was too much as the Lakers took game two 10-5.

Oswego baseball is back in action Thursday, April 22nd against University of Rochester for a non conference doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. in Rochester. This is the first non-conference opponent Oswego will face since Clarkson on April 14th. Oswego State Baseball Travels to Fredonia for SUNYAC Doubleheader

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Oswego State Baseball returns after a brief COVID pause which resulted in the cancellation of the home doubleheader on Sunday, April 18th against Trinity College. Oswego returns Tuesday, April 20th for a 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. at Fredonia, for a SUNYAC West matchup. Oswego comes into Tuesday’s games with a 9-1 record (5-1 SUNYAC) and the Lakers are in second place out of the three SUNYAC West teams. The Lakers are also on an 8-game win streak heading into the conference doubleheader. Fredonia currently sits in last place in the SUNYAC West, with a record of 1-8 (0-8 SUNYAC). 

The Lakers and the Blue Devils have met in two games this season, a doubleheader in Oswego on April 10th. Oswego dominated both of those games by scores of 17-3 and 15-6. Kyle Lauria was 5-7 that day, to go with 7 RBIs, a triple, home run, and 3 runs, which helped him win SUNYAC Baseball Athlete of the Week. Ryan Enos hit well against Fredonia as well, going 6-8 with 2 doubles, 7 RBIs, and 6 runs. 

On the season, the Oswego offense has been nothing short of amazing as they are averaging 11.6 runs per game. Enos leads the Lakers in average and RBIs with a .500 average paired with 20 RBIs. Lauria is hitting .432 with 17 RBIs, a triple and a home run on the year. Oswego features two more hitters hitting .400 or above, in Paul Tammaro at .432 and Ryan Weiss who is hitting exactly .400. Look for the Laker bats to put up a lump sum of runs on Tuesday in both games.

Fredonia’s leading hitter is Ryan Hann who is leading the Blue Devils in batting average at .385, and RBIs with 8. Tyler Phillips was Fredonia’s best hitter against the Lakers back on April 10th, Phillips was 3-7 with 2 runs against the Lakers, as the Oswego pitching staff shut down the Fredonia bats in both games. 

Oswego baseball takes the field Tuesday, April 20th at Fredonia, with games scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. This is a key matchup as the Lakers chase Brockport in the SUNYAC West standings. Oswego State Baseball Extends Win Streak

CLARKSON, N.Y. — Oswego State Baseball defeated Clarkson in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, March 14th. Oswego won game one 17-13 and game two 9-4, to get their record to 9-1 on the season. This extends the Lakers win streak to eight wins after dropping their second game of the season.

Game one saw ten pitchers between the two teams get the ball in a slugfest, record breaking game. Paul Tammaro tied the Oswego record for hits in a game, in his 5-6 day at the plate for the Lakers. Ryan Weiss had 6 RBIs on the day, tying for second most in a game in program history, Weiss was 3-6 at the plate along with a grand slam to go with his 6 RBIs. Ryan Enos also had an outstanding game one at the plate, Enos was 2-4 with a double and 4 RBIs in the Laker win. Oswego led 7-0 going into the 6th, and the game was tied 9-9 going into the 8th. After both teams could not produce a run in the 8th, Oswego exploded for eight runs in the top of the 9th. Clarkson made a little comeback in the bottom of the 9th, but the Lakers would take game one 17-13. 

Pitchers dominated the first few innings as the game was scoreless after four. Anthony Van Fossen threw five scoreless innings, before getting into some trouble in the sixth. Van Fossen got some bullpen help from Connor Van Dreason who did not allow a hit in his 1.2 innings of work. Oswego would get three separate 2 RBI singles, from Julian Drew, Kyle Lauria, and Ryan Enos each, driving in two runs in the 5th, 6th and 7th innings. Drew, Lauria, and Paul Tammaro would all score on wild pitches or passed balls. The Lakers led 5-0 going into the final two frames, and 5-4 going into the 7th. Oswego would score four insurance runs, and hold Clarkson scoreless in the 7th to win game two 9-4. 

Oswego baseball is now on an eight game win streak, and the Lakers look to make it ten straight on Sunday, April 18th versus Trinity College at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. The non-conference matchup is the first time an out of state opponent has traveled to Oswego since the COVID-19 pandemic started.

Oswego State Baseball Sweeps New Paltz

Oswego State Baseball went on the road to take on New Paltz in a Tuesday afternoon SUNYAC East vs West doubleheader on April 6th. The Lakers offense erupted for 35 runs combined in both games which led the Lakers to two victories by scores of 24-12, and 11-3, as the Lakers overall record moves to 3-1.

Both offenses were firing on all cylinders in game one, as New Paltz scored 12 runs on 15 hits, but that was no match for the 24 runs on 17 hits the Lakers produced. Every Oswego batter that had three or more at bats got a hit in game one, and multiple batters had numerous RBIs and runs. Myles Felton led the Lakers with 4 RBIs, he was 1-4 at the plate with a double, and Felton was one of five Lakers to have an extra base hit in game one. Paul Tammaro and Connor Stanton each had three hits and a double apiece as they touched home plate a combined eight times. Frank Levanti also had himself a three hit day as he was 3-5 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs. Ryan Weiss contributed two doubles, two runs, and an RBI to the Laker offense, and Jacob Levine hit his second home run of the year as he had a 2 RBI day. Dean Stalzer of New Paltz led the Hawks offense as he was 3-5 with 3 runs, and 6 RBIs, but six of the eight Hawks pitchers gave up multiple runs as the Oswego offense was overpowering in game one.

The Oswego offense carried over into game two, as they scored 11 runs on 10 hits. Most of this Oswego offense was insurance runs in their 6-run 5th inning and 2-run 6th inning, as Jai Sharma shined on the mound in his first collegiate appearance. Sharma threw all 6 innings as he allowed 3 runs on 4 hits, but fanned 8 batters in the process. Sharma’s fellow freshman classmate Levine kept his hot bat going as he was 2-3 with a double, triple, and 4 RBIs, to help the Lakers sweep the doubleheader.

Oswego had 35 runs and 27 hits on the day as their offense came ready to hit today. Oswego State Baseball continues their 2021 season with their home opener doubleheader on Thursday, April 8th at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. versus Alfred State. WTOP 10 will be live at the baseball field with all the action as the Lakers continue their march towards their fourth SUNYAC Championship in as many years.

Oswego State Baseball kicks off 2021 Season at Brockport

The Oswego State Baseball team takes the field on April 3rd for the first time in the 2021 season, after the first three games to start their season were postponed or canceled. The Lakers go on the road to Brockport for a 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. doubleheader against the Golden Eagles, as they begin their road to a fourth straight SUNYAC title.

The first pitch on Saturday will mark the first game for the Lakers since the last contest of their shortened 2020 season on March 8th, which was a 6-4 win at Arcadia. The Lakers have won three straight SUNYAC titles and looked like they would have a good chance at four straight in their abbreviated season. The Lakers return three graduate students as well as 13 seniors who are all looking to win yet another SUNYAC championship. Oswego lost lots of top players over the past two years, but return big bats in Ryan Weiss (.444 AVG, 2 2B, 6 RBIs in 2020), Paul Tammaro (.429 AVG, 6 runs, 2B in 2020), and Kyle Lauria (.360 AVG, 2 2B, 2 3B, 7 RBIs in 2020).

Brockport is off to a 3-1 start, with a doubleheader split at Oneonta, followed by a dominating doubleheader sweep at Fredonia in which they outscored the Blue Devils a combined 32-4 this past Tuesday, March 30th. The doubleheader against Oswego marks Brockport baseball’s first game on their home field this season. Brockport has a plethora of hitters off to scorching hot starts this season; James Houlahan (.529 AVG, 2B, 2 RBIs), Ryan Mansell (.500 AVG, 4 2B, 3 RBIs), Nick Pastore (.471 AVG, 2 3B, 4 RBIs), Ryan Voight (.364, AVG, 2 2B, 1 HR, 7 RBIs). 

Oswego pitchers will look to cool down the hot Brockport bats and the hitters will look to get off to a hot start right out of the gate. Oswego baseball starts their season Saturday, April 3rd at Brockport, with first pitches of the doubleheader scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. and WTOP 10 will continue to deliver content on the Oswego State Baseball team over the course of their 2021 season.
