Simzer shines as Lakers take down Keystone

LA PLUME, P.A. — The Lakers stay undefeated as they routed Keystone College 5-1. 13 seconds into the contest Senior Kacie Simzer scored the first goal of the game for the Lakers with Kaitlyn Ahle assisting.  The Lakers were tested early as they faced a situation that they have not been in all year which was a team scoring a goal, effectively ending their four game streak of not allowing a single goal.  It took the Lakers only one minute and 11 seconds to score another goal as Simzer scored her second of the game. The rest of the second quarter was a defensive battle where both Oswego and Keystone combined for three penalty corner kicks and four goals. Goalie Erica Scheblein was given her first test of the year and she was ready for the challenge. After giving up a goal early in the game, Scheblein had blocked five shots from the 36:08 to the 43:21 mark. She finished the game with nine total saves, which is almost half of her season’s total. Oswego adjusted in every quarter of the game as within one minute and 20 seconds of the second half beginning Kailtyn Mastracco scored for the Lakers off of a penalty shot.

After Keystone changed goalies during the fourth quarter, Simzer tested if their new goalie was up to the task. Simzer tied the all-time record for goals in a game for the Lakers as she finished the day with four goals. Oswego finished the day with 21 shots on goal. Throughout the game, the Lakers took advantage of Keystone penalties as they had ten penalty corner kicks.

This marks the first time the Lakers have started 5-0 since the 2016-2017 season. The Lakers travel north to take on the St. Lawrence Saints on Saturday, September 17th at 1:00 PM at North Country Field.

Lakers field hockey keep shutout streak alive with another successful weekend

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego state field hockey team kept their hot streak going as they took their fifth straight victory beating their record of four straight last year via shutout in two home games this past weekend. The lakers started off the weekend by hosting the Keuka Wolves on friday afternoon. Senior Kaitlyn Mastracco stayed with the theme of the lakers quick offensive attacks when she netted the first goal only a minute into the game. The Lakers then stayed quiet for most of the first half as the Wolves and Lakers had a continued back and forth midfield play with great defense on both sides. It took until the 24:56 mark of the quarter until Mastracco fired her second goal of the contest past the goalkeeper putting the Lakers up 3-0 at halftime. But the Lakers turned it up after halftime after Nancy Pagliaroli scored her second goal of the season ten minutes into the second half. Less than three minutes later Mastracco struck again for her third goal of contest on a day where she ended with a team leading 3 goals and 1 assist. Senior Kacie Simzer would then score two straight goals for the lakers to end a 7-0 win against Keuka.

The Lakers came back on Saturday afternoon against Sage college from Albany, NY. The Lakers started off quick as Kaitlyn Jordan scored the Lakers’ first goal 2 minutes into the game. The Lakers had eight straight shots and four penalty corners without a score because of stellar goalie play by Sage’s Anna Church in a game where she had 19 saves, the Lakers broke through on their ninth consecutive shot off the stick of Kacie Simzer. But this team shined with their stellar defense in a game where Sage had no SOG and limited possession. Pagliaroli, Mastracco and Bauer led the team with 2 goals each and Simzer and Jordan added the others in a 7-0 win over Sage.

Oswego State will now travel to La Plume, PA to take on the Keystone College Giants on September 13 at 4:00PM.

Lakers field hockey gets two big wins in home opener

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State Field Hockey team got off to a blazing start this weekend at they took care of both opponents this weekend in a handily manner. The Lakers team first took on Medaille college in the season opener on Friday night and wasted no time to score. Just 32 seconds in the game Senior Kacie Simzer scored the first of her two goals for the first Laker goal of the season which started an all out offensive attack by the Lakers. Senior Kaitlyn Ahle had a stellar day by leading the lakers in scoring with 3 goals and 8 points which ties the single game record for total points in Oswego history. Senior Megan Delaney and sophomore Kate McNally also chipped in with two goals of their own in the first half while Delaney earned herself multiple spots in the record books, tying the single game assists record and is now tied for seventh all time for points in a single game with seven. Ellie Kazel and Nancy Pagliaroli both added one goal in a 11-0 route of Medaille. 

The Lakers kept the momentum going the next day as they shutout Houghton university 5-0 Saturday afternoon. The Lakers would get off to a slower start than Friday as Megan Delaney had the only lakers goal in the first half at the 6:35 mark. The Highlanders applied pressure to senior goalkeeper Erica Scheblein at the end of the second quarter, but Scheblein denied the chances, tallying four saves in a row to end the half making it a 1-0 lead for the Lakers at halftime. The Lakers picked it up eight minutes into the second half as they took a 2-0 lead after Delaney set up teammate Molly Darcy for her first goal of the season. Newcomer Taylin Bauer stopped a 19 minute dry spell on both sides by scoring her first collegiate goal at the 42:30 mark while 4 minutes later Kaitlyn Ahle kept her hot start up by scoring her fourth goal of the season. Kaitlyn Mastracco added one more late as the Lakers win their first two games of the season to bring them to 2-0. The Lakers will try to stay undefeated at they challenge Keuka college on Friday, September 9th at 4pm.

Loss keeps field hockey out of conference tournament

Oswego, N.Y. — The Oswego State field hockey team took to the field Wednesday night against Cortland. The Lakers fought hard, but the final score was a 3-0 Cortland win. The first goal came five minutes into the game by Cortland’s Kierra Ettere, one of the best goal scorers in the country. The other two Cortland goals would come in the first half of the game by Lily Fox. The Oswego defense would hold strong in the second half of the game not allowing a goal on thirteen shots. Oswego would take their only eight shots of the game in the second half, four of them going on target. Oswego’s Chloe Parks would get off three of those shots, with two of them on target ones. Oswego’s goalie, Erica Scheblein, would have nine saves in the contest.

Unfortunately, this loss would keep the Lakers out of the conference tournament. With one game to go, the team sits at 8-8, but only 2-4 in SUNYAC play, putting them sixth in the conference. They play their last game of the season at Keuka College on Friday at 4:00 p.m.

Field Hockey finishes SUNYAC play with loss versus Geneseo

OSWEGO — Field Hockey played their final home game of the 2019 season on Saturday when they took on SUNYAC opponent Geneseo. The Knights, who came into the contest 4-0 in SUNYAC play, recorded the first two goals of the game within the first six minutes. The lone Lakers goal would come from Kacie Simzer in the third quarter before the Knights answered in the fourth to finish with a 4-1 final score. Oswego goalie Erica Scheblein recorded 20 saves which was a new career high. The Lakers finish 1-5 in conference competition and will miss the SUNYAC Championship. However, the team will finish their 2019 campaign on the road at St. John Fisher on Wednesday.

Field Hockey forces OT but falls to SUNY Cortland

OSWEGO — Laker Field Hockey took an OT loss 2-1 to SUNY Cortland after tying the game late on Saturday at Laker Stadium. The goal from junior Theresa Glynn off the penalty corner from Kathleen Little and Leah Romanowski that forced OT was with less than seven minutes left in regulation. The Red Dragons would net one past freshman goalie Erica Scheblein a little over 2 minutes into extra time. The Lakers have only two conference match ups before the start of SUNYACS, with Brockport and Geneseo. Currently sitting in 6th place, the team would need to pass Oneonta and Brockport to get a berth to the tournament. However, the ladies will travel to Rochester on Tuesday to face non-conference opponent Nazareth, which is the start to a three-game road trip.

Laker Field Hockey drops game to defending SUNYAC Champions New Paltz

OSWEGO — Field Hockey hosted the defending SUNYAC Champions, New Paltz, this past Saturday. The Lakers hold the Hawks to a 2-1 score up till halftime. Once the 3rd period begins, New Paltz began to turn on the heat and netted four more goals by the end of the tilt. The lone Oswego goal, scored by Alyssa DeMichael, was a deflection from a shot sent in by Abby Testo. The ladies look to bounce back as they travel to Oneonta on Saturday Oct. 5th for another SUNYAC battle.
