OSWEGO, N.Y. — A few months ago, a high school hockey season for the Oswego Buccaneers seemed very unlikely. However with a quick announcement allowing high schools to begin practices, the condensed season was going to occur and at a very rapid pace.

Oswego started off their season caught off guard by facing opponents they typically do not square off against but did this year due to the new COVID-19 enforced divisions based on location and not school size. Through the month of February, the Bucs would get three wins but also dealt six losses with two of them against a well known Division II favorite in Section III, the Skaneateles Lakers who went 14-0-2 this season. 

It was a quick turn around in March as Oswego was able to win their first four games of the month convincingly outscoring their opponents 22 to 4 in those four matchups, as well as earning five wins and receiving only two losses in March. When head coach Kevin Ahern was asked what were some possible factors in the turnaround he did not hesitate.

“We have settled into some of the systems that we’re trying to implement… our puck movement has gotten much better, our d-zone has tightened up, and our goaltending is playing well,” Kevin Ahern said.

It was bittersweet for 6 seniors at the end of the season as they were fortunate enough to have a season but bid farewell to their high school hockey careers and home games at what they know as “The Fort”. With a large veteran core coming back, including eleven seniors in 2022; look for the Buccaneers to be hungry for a potential deep playoff run in Section III this upcoming season with their young determination and depth.

OSWEGO, NY — The Oswego Girls Buccaneers Hockey team finished their shortened 2021 season Saturday Morning. The Buccaneers faced off against reigning State Champions Clinton in an early puck drop. Clinton would win 7-1 in the contest as Oswego struggled to get on the scoreboard. Bucs forward Mischa Palmitesso would get the lone goal as she was able to pull it to her backhand to bring it around Clinton goaltender Casey Clausen. At the other end, goaltenders Nyah Dawson and Chelsea Storms shared time in between the pipes that morning for the Buccaneers and did a solid job trying to keep the team in the game. However, Clinton’s offense was just too powerful as the Warriors would finish their season undefeated and at the top of the Section III Standings.

For Oswego, the Buccaneers struggled throughout the season as the team’s roster featured a lot of underclassmen trying to make the jump to the varsity level. However, the team did make strives throughout the contests in their limited schedule. Later on, in the season, the group was able to battle in games, one specifically being in the overtime lost against Skaneateles in the Crisafulli Ice Rink. The Bucs look to get back to their regular schedule in the 2021-22 season as the team was only able to play six games this season due to limitations from the COVID-19 Pandemic. A large part of the roster will be returning to the team along with both goaltenders currently on the Oswego team. OSWEGO, NY — The Oswego Boys Buccaneers Hockey team wrapped up their 2021 season Saturday evening against the Watertown IHC Cavaliers. Oswego would win in dominating fashion as the Buccaneers would take the victory 6-1 over the Cavaliers. The Bucs would open the scoring in the first period as forward Brayden Miller tallied three goals in the stanza. Miller would not be stopped in the second period as the Buccaneer added another to finish with four goals in the game. Miller would finish with 14 goals over the course of the season and lead the team in that category. Lukas Cady would add another to the Oswego total in the second period with a short handed goal. During the third period, Oswego goaltender Brandon Demling continued to play well in between the pipes and only allowed one goal over the course of the whole game. Senior captain Adam Michalski would score an empty net goal to wrap up the contest.

Oswego improved to 8-8 and would end on a high note after losing the last two contests inside the Crisafulli Ice Rink. The Buccaneers were able to have an impressive record after facing Division I teams all season long. Oswego was able to go on the road and string together four wins after starting 3-6. The coaching staff and the rest of the team head into the off season graduating five seniors. OSWEGO, NY — Friday night the Oswego Buccaneers Hockey team faced off against the Cazenovia Lakers in a Section III Hockey match up. The Buccaneers would play their second game in two days and Oswego would fall once again but this time in overtime. The Bucs honored their senior class prior to puck drop tonight. The Lakers scored four goals in the third period to win 7-6 over the Bucs. Oswego opened the scoring in the first period with three goals. Forward Collin Cianfarano would tally three goals in the contest to finish with a hat trick on the night. Cazenovia would net two goals in the final two minutes in the third period to tie the game and force overtime in the Crisafulli Ice Rink. With only three minutes left to go in the overtime period, the Lakers would put one past Oswego goaltender Brandon Demling to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Oswego now sets their sights on Watertown IHC as the Buccaneers wrap up their 2021 season at home Saturday evening. The 7 p.m. puck drop will feature the last time the Class of 2021 will be able to play for the coaching staff of Oswego. The team has a chance to finish 8-8 on the season with a win tomorrow night. OSWEGO, NY — Thursday evening the Oswego Boys Buccaneers Hockey team faced off against the Syracuse Cougars in a contest played inside the Crisafulli Ice Rink. The Cougars would have no problem with the Buccaneers as the game finished with a 4-0 score in favor of Syracuse. The game would be scoreless heading into the final minutes of the first period before the Cougars added to past Oswego goaltender Brandon Demling. Syracuse would continue to add to their goal total in the second period as the Cougars would tally one more before the end of stanza. Oswego would look to put one up on the scoreboard before the end of the contest but would be unsuccessful as the Cougars finished the season on a high note.

Oswego will head into Friday night’s contest at 7-7 on the season as the Buccaneers welcome Cazenovia into the Crisafulli Ice Rink. Oswego wraps up their season at home with their game against Cazenovia and then Watertown on Saturday. Tomorrow’s game is Senior Night for the Buccaneers as the team honors their seven seniors which includes captain Adam Michalski and injured Ryan Bartlett. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. from Fort Ontario and WNYO will have the game broadcasted over their airwaves. OSWEGO, NY — The Oswego Girls Buccaneers Hockey team skated against the Skaneateles Lakers Wednesday evening. The Buccaneers would fall to the Lakers in overtime by a score of 5-4. Oswego was able to head into the second period trailing Skaneateles 2-1 after Aliana Diblasi tallied her second goal of the season the powerplay. Skaneateles would add two more in the second stanza but Oswego forward Mia Fierro would score her third on the year to put the Lakers within two heading into the final period. On Senior Night, captain Amelia Rastley would rip a shot past the Skaneateles goaltender to score her first goal of the season. Oswego would tie the game with under five minutes to go as freshman forward Lily Hunter scored her first varsity goal on the rush. The shot would push the teams into overtime before a redirected shot would get past Nyah Dawson who had a steady game in between the pipes for the Buccaneers.

Oswego will finish off their season on home ice as the Clinton Warriors travel into the Crisafulli Ice Rink Saturday morning. Clinton is currently undefeated heading into the contest and defeated the Oswego group 4-2 just over a week ago. Puck drop is set for 10:30 a.m. and WNYO will be broadcasting the game on 88.9 FM. OSWEGO, NY — The Oswego Boys Buccaneers hockey team returns home after a weeklong road trip. The team was able to collect four wins which featured two shutouts and a few closer contests in which Oswego was able to outscore their opponents. The road trip started with a 7-0 win over Ontario Bay and ended down in Auburn with a 5-3 victory over the Maroons. During the week, the Bucs traveled to Fulton to face off against the rival Red Raiders on Wednesday, March 3rd. The team took a day off and then traveled to Syracuse to battle Liverpool. The 7-0 win featured an offensive performance as Oswego was able to continue to put pucks in the back of the net. Brandon Demling collected all four wins for Oswego in between the pipes and allowed only four goals over the course of the week.

Kevin Ahern and the rest of the coaching staff now get the team set for three games to complete the 2021 season. All the contests will be played in the Crisafulli Ice Rink located at Fort Ontario. The 7-6 Buccaneers welcome in the Syracuse Cougars Thursday night for a special Teal Game match up. The Division I team out of Syracuse has had a solid season so far and ends their 2021 schedule in Oswego. Friday night, Cazenovia will play their fifth game of the season against the Buccaneers. The away team has had a shorter schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic but will do battle against the Buccaneers. Oswego will close out their season against Watertown IHC Saturday night. Watertown has only played one game so far this season and Saturday is the last day of the Section III Hockey season. All puck drops are set for 7 p.m. and games will be broadcasted over the WNYO airwaves. OSWEGO, NY — Thursday evening, the Oswego Boys Buccaneers Hockey team took on the Skaneateles Lakers inside the Crisafulli Ice Rink. The Section III matchup featured two teams in division two that were used to seeing each other during a season. Both groups have seen each other before as Oswego kicked off their season on the road in Skaneateles. The Bucs would fall to the Lakers 7-2 but would-be prepared heading into this contest after coming off a win the night before against Auburn.

The Lakers would open the scoring in the first period after Luke Renaud would tally his first goal of the contest. He would add another to his season total later in the game. Oswego would trail 1-0 heading into the second period as Brayden Demling had a strong performance in net to keep the contest within one goal. He would have a total of 31 saves in the contest and play all 45 minutes in between the pipes for the Buccaneers.

In the second stanza, the Lakers would start to extend their lead as the team would add three more goals. Oswego would answer in the third period with a Collin Cianfarano goal that was assisted by Marcus Baker and Brayden Miller. This tally would be the Bucs only goal of the evening as the Lakers would continue their dominance in the final stanza with three more goals to add to their total. Skaneateles netminder Adam Casper would make 13 saves in route to the victory.

Skaneateles extends their win streak to 48 and stays undefeated on the season. Oswego will take the weekend off and reset for another match up next Tuesday against the Ontario Bay Storm. The last time these two teams met was earlier on in the season, with Oswego coming away with a 5-0 win. OSWEGO, NY — Wednesday evening, the Oswego Buccaneers Boys Hockey team returned home for another Section III Hockey matchup, this time against division rival Auburn. The Maroons traveled to the Crisafulli Ice Rink with a three-game losing streak in tow as the Bucs look to turn around their season, also being on their own slide. Oswego has played two games the past two nights with four games scheduled in four straight days. Baldwinsville and the Christian Brother Academy were able to defeat the Buccaneers, both my multiple goals.

The Bucs would turn to their offense against the Maroons as Joe Diblasi buries his fourth goal of the season to put Oswego ahead of Auburn. The period would end with that lone goal along with a solid performance from both goaltenders. Oswego would add another in the second period off a Frank Winchek redirect that came from Adam Michalski’s shot.

The Maroons would eventually answer in the third period but would not be enough as the Buccaneers put three more behind Marrons netminder Mason Jones. Captain Michalski would tally two goals in the final stanza to finish with three points in the contest. Diblasi would add one more to his goal totals on a breakaway opportunity. At the other end of the rink, goaltender Brayden Demling would secure the victory with one goal against and a .950 save percentage.

Oswego will host the Skaneateles Lakers tonight at the Fort Ontario as the teams are set for a 7 p.m. puck drop. The Lakers have been one of the better teams in the section this year as the team is 8-0. The Buccaneers could hand the Lakers their first lost of the season but would need to play a complete 45 minutes of hockey this evening. OSWEGO, NY — Monday evening, the Oswego Boys Buccaneers Hockey team welcomed the Baldwinsville Bees into the Crisafulli Ice Rink for a Section III Hockey matchup. The Bees were on a mission to snap a two-game losing streak while Oswego looked to start a four-game series off on a high note. Senior goaltender Brayden Demling would once again start in net for Oswego but would not last that long as freshman forward Sam Ciappa would net his first goal of the game. The Bee would later tally two more for a hat trick in his first season with the team. But, that would come after Demling was replaced by backup netminder Mason Kurilovitch. This would be the first time the goaltender has seen action in the first period, and would later give up three goals during his time in between the posts. Marcus Baker would score the first Buccaneer goal before the end of the first stanza to make it a 3-1 hockey game.

Lukas Cady was able to tally his third goal of the season on the powerplay in the first part of the second period. However, Baldwinsville would not look back. The Bees would add two more in the period and cap off the game with an additional tally in the third period. Sophomore netminder Jon Schirmer would allow two goals in the contest and get his second win of the season in net for the Bees.

Oswego now sets sail for the Christian Brothers Academy of Syracuse as the two teams face off for the second time in four days. The familiar foes will drop the puck at 8:30 p.m. at the Coliseum located at the New York State Fairgrounds. On Saturday, the Brothers defeated the Bucs 6-2 at the Fort Ontario. OSWEGO, NY — This past weekend, there were three hockey games completed in the Crisafulli Ice Rink located on the banks of Lake Ontario. Both the Oswego Boys Buccaneers team and the Oswego Girls Buccaneers team competed against Section III opponents with mixed results coming from the contests.

Friday afternoon, the Oswego Girls team faced off against the Skaneateles Lakers. The Lakers, a past Section III champion, showed up in full force in the contest as the group was able to take care of the Buccaneers. The Lakers would score two in the first period and add three more in the final stanza to secure their first win of the season. Oswego was unable to add to the score sheet as goaltender Isabelle Wells had a shutout and ten saves for Skaneateles. Oswego will take the week off from competition and start their second game of the 2021 season against Skaneateles on the road. Puck drop is set for 6:30 p.m. on March 1st.

That evening, the Oswego boys Buccaneers would take the ice once again for their second matchup at home. The Bucs would face the Cicero-North Syracuse Northstars for the first time this season. Oswego would open the scoring in the first period off a Marcus Baker tally. The Buccaneers would finish the second period up 6-2 after five goals were scored during the stanza. CNS would come back in the third period but would come up short thanks to a solid performance between the pipes for Brayden Demling. The netminder had 24 saves in the contest. Forward Collin Cianfarano would have a five-point night with three goals and two assists.

However, Oswego would not have the same result the following evening. The Christian Brothers Academy of Syracuse would travel to the Crisafulli Ice Rink and come away with a 6-2 victory. The team would extend it’s win streak after three goals in the third period. Connor Calabro would make an appearance in net after relieving a struggling Demling. Calabro would allow two goals and have eight saves in his 11 minutes played. Oswego will prepare for four games in four nights with Baldwinsville traveling north for a Monday night matchup. The teams will do battle at the fort at 7 p.m. as Oswego looks to start this new week on a high note. WTOP 10 will continue to deliver updates on social media along with recaps on the website.
