Baseball takes series against rivals Plattsburgh

Oswego, N.Y. – The Oswego State Lakers found themselves in a weekend set against school rivals the Plattsburgh Cardinals. The Lakers came into the series on a six game SUNYAC win streak, though were on a three game losing streak after taking back-to-back losses to St. John Fisher the previous Saturday and a mid-week loss to Ithaca. Plattsburgh came in on a four game win streak, including a sweep of the New Paltz Hawks.

Game one of the three game set was on Friday, and saw Kieran Finnegan on the bump for the Lakers taking on Kolby Mordecki for the Cardinals. Oswego took the lead scoring the first run in the bottom of the second on a Jelani Hamer steal of home. Connor Gonzalski grabbed the lead in the top of the third on a two run homer. Owen Parliment tied it straight back up with a solo shot in the bottom of the third. Once again Plattsburgh wasn’t letting Oswego keep the lead, Jack Defayette singling and scoring Adam Wein to give a 3-2 lead. After a couple of scoreless frames, the the Lakers finally grabbed the lead back, Jacob Levine hitting a two-run homer for a 4-3 Oswego lead. The game ended with that score line. Kieran Finnegan pitched seven strong innings, giving up the three runs, striking out 10, and walking two. Anthony Van Fossen pitched the final two innings without allowing a runs, striking out three and grabbing a save. Kolby Mordecki also pitched seven, gave up all four runs, struck out 11, and walked three.

Game two was moved to Saturday morning, due to predicted weather later on Saturday. Chris Santis took the mound for Plattsburgh, taking on Alek Conrad for Oswego. Oswego took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, as Jelani Hamer stole third and then scored on a throwing error by the catcher. In the top of the third, Plattsburgh tied it on a Connor Gonzalski single. The game finally came untied in the sixth. It started with a Jack Defayette two-run double. Two batters later, Adam Wein doubled scoring Defayette, Plattsburgh took a 4-1 lead. The extended their lead to four runs in the eighth on a Nick Cergol RBI single. The Lakers tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the ninth. With two runners on, Tishawn Featherstone singled scoring both. That brought up the Lakers most dangerous hitter Owen Parliment, who struck out looking to end the game. Chris Santic went 7.2 innings, allowing only one run walking two and striking out five. Adam Veit, who played the first eight innings at shortstop, came in for the ninth, and got the save. For Oswego Alek Conrad went five innings, gave up one run, without giving a walk and striking out three. Larry Citrola was the first out of the bullpen for Oswego, and he gave up three runs, in two-thirds of an inning and got the loss.

Game three of the series was game two of Saturday’s double header. Adam Veit got the start for Plattsburgh after pitching the ninth of the previous game, for Oswego it was freshman Jonah Shearer. This game was a lot different than the other two had been. It started with a five run second inning for Oswego. It started with a Tim Schinto RBI single. Then CJ McCarthy hit a triple that scored two more runs, and then on a throwing error, made it home clearing the bases and giving Oswego a 4-0 lead. A couple batters later, Tishawn Featherstone hit a single, that would score Jelani Hammer. Plattsburgh grabbed a run in the third and fourth innings, making it 5-2. In the bottom of the fourth Oswego put up another three runs to extend it to 8-2. RBIs by McCarthy, Hamer, and Featherstone. After the top of the sixth, a lightning warning put the game into a 30 min delay, and then the weather finally hit and the game was called, Oswego winning 8-2. Jonah Shearer had an excellent start for the Lakers, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing two runs, neither of them earned, walking one, and striking out five. Adam Veit was charged with all eight of Oswego’s runs, six of them were earned. He only struck out one batter and walked one.

The Lakers now head to a home double header against Clarkson on Tuesday with record of 15-15 (8-4 SUNYAC). They are fourth in the SUNYAC.

Mens Baseball Sweeps Fredonia in Weekend Action

2022_Team_Photo ROCHESTER, NY – It was a successful weekend for the Lakers as they convincingly beat the Fredonia Blue Devils in both of their encounters this weekend. Game won was nothing short of a blowout that saw the Lakers dominate Fredonia with a final score of 12-1. The momentum was in favor of the Lakers from the start as they truly dominated this game. Fredonia would score their only run of the game in the top of the second inning. Senior Colin Williams was on fire this game as he finished with one run and two RBI’s. It really was a team effort however as the Lakers were firing on all cylinders from start to finish. The Lakers looked to take this momentum into the next day where they had a rematch against the Blue Devils.

The Lakers kept the momentum rolling the next day when they knocked off Fredonia for the second time. This game was a lot closer and saw both teams fighting hard for a victory. The Lakers started off hot scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Blue Devils weren’t going to let history repeat itself as they bounced right back tying the game in the third. The Lakers then went on to score three more runs and the game looked like it was shaping up to be another Lakers victory. Fredonia was not done however as they came right back and scored three more runs to tie the game at six. After this the game got out of hand with the Lakers completely taking over. Freshman Emil Sander would score the Lakers final run to give them a five run victory as the Lakers completed the weekend sweep. The Lakers look to keep this momentum rolling as they head to New Paltz this Friday at 3pm.

Oswego Baseball swept in SUNYAC opener

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The rough start to the Oswego State Baseball team’s season just got a bit worse. After starting the season 5-8 through a tough non-conference schedule, the team opened conference play with one of the toughest opponents there is, the Cortland Red Dragons.

The first game of the the three game set was one the Lakers really are going to want to forget. Jacob Sanders got the start on the mound for the Lakers, but only got two innings into the game. He gave up three runs, on four hits, walking two, hitting a batter and striking out two. Anthony Van Fossen pitched the next four innings for the Lakers, and it didn’t get much better. He allowed six runs on eight hits, walking one, though he did strike out six. The game only went seven innings, so the final frame was pitched by Ryan Paige, who gave up three hits and a run, striking out one. Oswego was kept hitless in this one. Cortland’s Dylan Beers pitched all seven innings of the game, allowing only one walk, and striking out 12 of the 22 batters he faced in the game. Cortland won the game 10-0. The standout batter for Cortland was Mat Bruno. The Red Dragons’ left fielder was 3-5 on the day with a double and drove in three.

The second game of the series was actually game two of Friday’s double header. The Lakers had to bounce back from being no-hit just a few hours later. Unfortunately for the Lakers, it just wasn’t their day. The Red Dragons scored five runs in the first two innings in this one. Thomas Pecchia got the start for Oswego, he also only made it two innings into the game, giving up five runs, only three earned, and seven hits. The Lakers would respond, grabbing a run of their own in the top of the third inning, Jelani Hammer scoring off a Tishawn Featherstone single, though Cortland would take the run right back in the bottom half. The fourth inning was scoreless for both squads, and in the top of the fifth the Lakers looked to mount a comeback. Jelani Hammer started the scoring with a solo-homer, and then a two-run bomb from Featherstone pulling the Lakers to only a two run deficit 6-4. The Lakers once again kept the Red Dragons scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, but it was the sixth inning that Cortland created the insurmountable lead. They scored six runs, five out which came off of two home runs. Oswego couldn’t answer, and the Red Dragons added another three runs to their lead for a 15-4 final after seven innings. Cortland’s Will McCarthy got the win after going four and two thirds innings, giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out four. Alec Conrad pitched most of the game for the Lakers, going four innings while giving up seven runs, four earned, on nine hits and striking out two.

The final game of the set was on Saturday, and once more it was a tough one for the Lakers. Once again the Lakers were held scoreless in this one. They had six hits scattered through the seven inning game. Cortland again got started early, grabbing a run in the first inning, then two more in the third. Another three in the fourth inning knocked the Lakers started Kieran Finnegan out of the game. He finished after three and two thirds innings, giving up six runs, three earned, on seven hits, walking three. Larry Citrola took the bomb from Finnegan and had a good two and a third innings. He only allowed one run on one hit and struck on two. Going into the seventh the Red Dragons held a 7-0 lead, and they scored three in the seventh inning to make it a 10-0 lead and end the game. Relief pitcher Liam Krasney was a star for the Red Dragons’, pitched the final three frames without allowing a hit and striking out three; he also picked up a save. Errors killed the Lakers in this one, with only four of Cortland’s ten runs being earned runs.

The Lakers next series is a double header at home against SUNY Cobleskill on Wednesday, game one is a 1:30 and game two is set for 4:00. The team is now 5-11 this season.

Baseball team loses in Marietta

MARIETTA, OHIO — The Oswego State Lakers took to the road over the holiday weekend to take on the Marietta College Pioneers in the NCAA Division Three Super Regionals. A tough test for the Lakers, as the Pioneers were ranked the number two team in the country by D3baseball.com at the end of the regular season and had easily run through their competition in the regional round.

The first game of the weekend was postponed from Friday to Saturday due to the weather. When it started, Oswego was the team to strike first. A Paul Tammaro lead-off single was followed by a Ryan Enos walk. Both runners would steal the next base, and Lukas Olsson would ground out but drive in Tammaro in the process. Marietta quickly answered tying the game at one in the bottom of the first. Both teams were held scoreless through the second and third innings. Marietta took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Pioneers scored seven times in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead, all seven of the runs being unearned. Marietta scored twice more in the bottom of the fifth to get a 10-1 lead. Oswego got one back on a Ryan Enos double scoring Frank Levanti. Unfortunately, Marietta hit a three-run home run to extend the lead 13-2 in the bottom of the sixth. No runs would be scored during the rest of the game and Marietta took game one of the best of three set. Paul Tammaroand Jacob Levine shared the team’s hit lead with two each. Kieran Finnegan got the start for the Lakers. He went 3.2 innings, gave up eight hits and eight runs, only one being earned. He struck out two and walked one.

Game two was played Sunday. In the first two innings, both of the teams were held scoreless, but Marietta quickly changed that in the third. They scored six runs on only three hits. Two of the runs were unearned as the Lakers had three errors in the inning. In the bottom of the third, the Lakers scored one, Ryan Enos scoring on a Lukas Olsson single. The Pioneers scored five more runs in the top of the fourth, including a three-run home run. Marietta scored twice more in the top of the fifth. Another two-run home run in the top of the sixth gave Marietta a 15-1 lead. The Pioneers crossed the plate four more times in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, the Lakers scored four runs. Ryan Enos drove in one with a bases-loaded walk. Lukas Olsson drove in the other three with a double. Neither team scored in the ninth and Marietta moved on to the Division 3 World Series. Lukas Olsson led the team with three hits and four RBIs. Anthony Van Fossen got the start in game two for Oswego. He went 2.1 innings, giving up six runs, only four earned, on three hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.

The Lakers’ season ends with a 33-13 record. They went 16-2 in conference matchups. The team was led by second basemen Ryan Enos who had a .451 batting average, 21 doubles, a triple, 10 home runs, and 60 RBIs. Shortstop Paul Tammaro also had an extremely good year. He batted .444 with 16 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, and 26 RBIs. Centerfielder Kyle Lauria hit .345 with 12 doubles, three triples, five home runs, and 53 RBIs. First Baseman Ryan Weiss hit .315 with 11 doubles, ten home runs, and 38 RBIs. Pitcher Kieran Finnegan had thirteen starts for the Lakers, he pitched 75.2 innings pitched. he had a 2.97 ERA with a 1.33 WHIP, he pitched four complete games. He walked 17 and struck out 59, opponents hit .275 against him. Enos, Tammaro, Lauria, Weiss, and Finnegan all earned All-SUNYAC First-team honors. Pitcher Jacob Sanders, Catcher Lukas Olsson, and Designated Hitter Jacob Levine were all awarded All Second-Team honors. Freshman Tishawn Featherstone was awarded SUNYAC Freshman of the year.

Oswego baseball moves on: Regional round recap and Super Regional Preview

AMBLER, P.A. — The Oswego State Lakers finished up their regional round matchups Monday morning. A total of five games were played across four days, three of the games being delayed, and two having to be resumed the next day.

The weekend started on Friday with a matchup with the Elizabethtown College Blue Jays. Elizabethtown got on the scoreboard first. A lead of walk was moved to second by a sacrifice bunt and then to third on a fly-out. A wild pitch made its way to the backstop and scored the runner for an early 1-0 lead. The Lakers wouldn’t let the lead last though. Paul Tammaro led off the inning with a double, and was then was quickly brought home on a Ryan Enos home run taking the lead 2-0. In the bottom of the second, a two-out walk by CJ McCarthy brought Paul Tammaro back to the plate for the second time in two innings. He again went for extra bases, but this time taking all four. A two-run shot extended the Lakers’ lead to 4-1. After a hit batter started the top of the third for the Blue Jays, but lightning strikes in the area caused an almost three-hour-long weather delay. Coming out of the delay, Elizabethtown got one across the plate to close the gap. In the bottom of the fourth, the Lakers brought home three. Paul Tammaro brought home Julian Drew with a single, and Lukas Olsson drove in Tammaro and CJ McCarthy with a double. The next run wasn’t scored until the bottom of the seventh, a Ryan Weiss solo shot, extended the lead to 8-2, which was the final score of the game. Paul Tammaro led the team in both hits, having three, and RBIs, also three. The Lakers had four doubles in the game and three home runs. Jacob Sanders started the game for Oswego, pitching the innings before the delay. He allowed both runs, allowing no hits, walking one, and hitting one batter. Thomas Pecchia came in after the delay. he pitched all seven innings after the delay. He gave up three hits and two walks, striking out five.

The second game of the weekend was on Saturday against the Arcadia University Knights. Arcadia had beaten Husson University in their first game. The game started as a pitching duel, as neither side allowed a run through the first three innings. Arcadia was the first to score, a two-run homer in the top of the fourth. Oswego quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning. With one out Lukas Olsson was hit by a pitch. A failed pickoff attempt got away from the first basemen and Olsson got all the way to third. Kyle Lauria drove him in with a single. After a foul-out by Ryan Weiss, a single by Tishawn Featherstone scored Lauria from first to tie the game at two. The Knights took the lead right back. Back-to-back doubles to start the top of the fifth brought home the first run of the inning. A sac bunt moved the runner to third, and a line out was enough to score the runner. The Knights got one more to cross the plate and had a 5-2 lead going into the bottom half. In the top of the seventh, the Knights had four straight one-out singles, to score their sixth run. A fly out to center scored the runner from third for Arcadia’s seventh run of the game. Oswego finally scored another run in the bottom of the eighth, a three-run home run by Kyle Lauria closed the lead to 7-5. Arcadia scored three runs of their own in the top of the ninth, to re-extend the lead to five runs. Ryan Enos hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth, but Oswego couldn’t come back and lost 10-7. Kyle Lauria and Ryan Enos each had three hits to lead Oswego. Lauria led the team in RBIs with four. Kieran Finnegan started the game for Oswego. He pitched six and a third innings, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits, only striking out one.

With the loss the Lakers had a second game to play Saturday, taking on the Husson University Eagles, who had beaten Elizabethtown earlier in the day. The Lakers started quickly. Paul Tammaro led the game with a bunt single. Ryan Enosdoubled to drive him in. Enos got thrown out at third trying to steal. Kyle Lauria then doubled. Ryan Weiss drove him in with a single. Jacob Levine followed Weiss with a single of his own, knocking out the Husson starter with the only out being on the base path. A wild pitch moved both runners up a base, and a Tishawn Featherstone line out brought home Weiss for a 3-0 Oswego lead. Husson responded in the bottom of the third, scoring four and taking the lead. Tishawn Featherstone tied it for the Lakers in the top of the fourth with a leadoff solo home run. After loading the bases, a Ryan Enos ground out brought home the runner from third. Kyle Lauria followed with a single driving home the other two runners retaking their three-run advantage at 7-4. The Eagles quickly answered, driving home three runs and tying the game at seven. The game remained tied at seven until the bottom of the sixth when a two-out single with a runner on second brought him home and took the lead 8-7. In the top of the seventh, a CJ McCarthy two-run homer gave the Lakers the lead 9-7. The game was suspended after the seventh due to darkness and picked up Sunday morning. In the eighth, a Jacob Levine double brought home Kyle Lauria home from second and extended the lead 10-8. The Lakers scored twice more in the top of the ninth, which was just enough as the Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to make the game 12-10. Kyle Lauria led the team in hits having a 4-4 day at the plate, three other Lakers had three-hit days. Paul Tammaro was one of the Lakers with three hits, all coming on bunt singles. CJ McCarthy and Ryan Enosshared the RBI lead with three each. The Lakers had six doubles and two home runs, CJ McCarthy had two of the doubles and a home run. Kyle Lauria stole three bases in the game. Anthony Van Fossen got the start for the Lakers. Going three innings, allowing seven runs, on nine hits, striking out two. Jai Sharma pitched four innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits, walking one, and striking out three.

After beating Husson, the Lakers had an uphill climb, having the beat the Arcadia Knights twice to win the regional. In the first game, it was the Knights who scored first. A fly-out scoring a runner from third for a 1-0 lead after the first. Ryan Weiss lead off the top of the second with a homer to tie the game. Oswego scored again in the bottom of the fourth, Jacob Levine singling to score Kyle Lauria from third. In the top of the fifth, Lauria drove in Paul Tammaro from second. A Julian Drew single brought home Ryan Enos and Lauria to give Oswego a 5-1 lead. Arcadia scored twice in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the eighth, Oswego crossed the plate six times, a Ryan Enos bases-loaded double bringing home all three runners, Julian Drew bringing home two on a single, and CJ McCarthy bringing home one on a single for an 11-3 Oswego lead. The Knights scored once in the bottom of the ninth, but the Lakers won, forcing a winner take all final. Paul Tammaro led the team in hits with three. Julian Drew led the team in RBIs with four. Sean Dertingerstarted for the Lakers. He pitched two innings, allowing one run on two hits, walking two, and striking out two. Jacob Sanders pitched three and a third innings of relief, allowing two runs on six hits, walking one, and striking out three. Alex Conrad pitched the remaining three and two-thirds innings. He allowed one run on two hits, walking two and striking out two.

The second game was the lowest-scoring affair of the weekend for the Lakers. In the first inning, Kyle Lauria brought home the first runner for Oswego on a single, and Ryan Weiss cleared the bases with a three-run homer for an early 4-0 lead. Arcadia only scored one run in the outing, a sac fly to center in the top of the third. The game was called due to weather and darkness after the fourth inning and picked up Monday morning, but it didn’t matter as no runners scored for either side. Oswego took the Regional Bracket, going 4-1 over the weekend are moving on. Four Lakers tied for the lead in hits with two each. Ryan Weiss led the team with three RBIs. Thomas Pecchia started the game for Oswego. He pitched the four innings before the delay, allowing the sole run, on three hits, walking two, and striking out two. Anthony Van Fossen pitched all five innings after the delay. Not allowing a hit, walking one, and striking out two.

In almost a sense of parody, the Lakers follow in the steps of the Oswego State Mens’ Basketball team, and after winning a regional in the Philadelphia area, are headed to Marietta, Ohio to take on the Marietta College Pioneers in the Super Regionals. Marietta won the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) with a 35-5 record, going 12-3 in conference games. They went on to win the OAC tournament and got to host the regional round, where they won in three games. D3baseball.com had them ranked #2 in the country following their conference title, whereas the Lakers sat at #16 in the same rankings.

At the plate, the Pioneers are led by five starters who all hit over .400. Outfielder Turner Hill has the highest average of them all, hitting .443 with 82 hits, 17 of them doubles, two triples, and a home run, driving in 48. He has also stolen 30 bases. Third baseman Damian Yenzi hit .428 with 83 hits, 28 of them doubles and 12 home runs, driving in 65. Hill and Turner were named co-conference players of the year. Outfielder Zach Boyd hit .426 with 66 hits, 12 of them doubles, 5 triples, and 6 home runs, driving in 43. Utilityman Drew Holderbach hit .418 with 71 hits, 14 of them doubles, and seven homers, driving in 54. Outfielder Carson Brett hit .408 with 62 hits, 14 of them doubles, five triples, and nine homers, driving in 41. Marietta has another three starters who all hit over .360 as well.

On the mound, the Pioneers are led by 14-game starter Trent Valentine. Along with his 14 starts, he has two appearances out of the bullpen, amassing 76.2 innings on the year. He has a 2.11 ERA with a 1.11 WHIP. He’s allowed only 19 runs, 18 of them earned, with 63 hits, and 22 walks, striking out 62. He has held opponents to a .228 batting average. In their bullpen, they have OAC pitcher of the year Sam Mathews. In 26 appearances out of the pen, he pitched 74.1 innings, saving 13 games. He has a 1.33 ERA and a WHIP at .69. He’s allowed 43 hits, 14 runs, 11 earned, walking eight, and striking out 68. Opponents hit .166 against him.

The Super Regional is just Oswego and Marietta in a three-game series. The first game of the series has the first pitch set at noon Friday. Game two is a noon Saturday with game three, if necessary, 45 minutes after the conclusion of game two. The winner of the series heads to Cedar Rapids Iowa for the D3 College World Series.

Oswego Baseball: SUNYAC playoff review and national tournament preview

OSWEGO N.Y. — The SUNYAC playoffs have come and gone. A disappointing weekend for the Lakers saw them knocked out before the championship game. The tournament started Thursday with a game against Plattsburgh, followed by two games Friday for the Lakers against Cortland followed by Brockport.

Thursdays game against the Cardinals was always going to be the easiest for Oswego. Plattsburgh found the scoreboard first, a bases loaded sac fly scored Alex Kornbla from third. The Lakers quickly answered. The Lakers loaded the bases with none out. A Kyle Lauria single scored Paul Tammaro to tie the game. Ryan Weiss hit a sac fly in the ensuing at bat scoring Ryan Enos for the Lakers second run. Oswego struck again in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs and extending the lead to 7-1. Plattsburgh had one runner cross the plate in the bottom of the fifth for their final run of the game. Oswego scored five more runs in the sixth inning to get the lead to ten runs. Two more runners scored in the seventh, and got their 15th and final runner to cross in the eighth inning for a 15-2 win. Paul Tammaro and Kyle Lauria combined for the lead in hits for Oswego, each having three. Ryan Weiss drove in four runners, the most on the team. Thomas Pecchia got the start for Oswego. He pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out two.

The second game of the tournament was a rematch with the Cortland Red Dragons. The Lakers took two of three games in the series with them only a few weeks prior, and the Red Dragons wanted revenge. Oswego crossed the plate first, a solo home run in the bottom of the second off the bat of Ryan Weiss gave the Lakers the early lead. Cortland answered in the top of the fourth. They would load the bases with none out. A double play would take out two runners, but one scored tying the game. A double scored one more to give Cortland the lead. Oswego wouldn’t let hold the lead long, another Ryan Weiss homer, this one a two run shot, gave the Lakers the lead back in the bottom of the fourth. Cortland took the lead straight back though, scoring four in the top of the fifth for a 6-3 advantage. In the bottom of the fifth, Ryan Weiss drove in his fourth run on a sac fly to cut down the lead. Cortland extended their lead with two more runs in the sixth. Oswego wasn’t letting the Red Dragons get any further away in the bottom of the sixth. They loaded the bases without an out, but Cortland buckled down to get two outs. Lukas Olsson stepped into the batter box and sent the ball out of the park to tie the game at eight. Cortland took the lead back in the top of the eighth, scoring three times to get a 11-8 lead. A ninth inning single by Julian Drew brought home one for the Lakers, but they took their first loss of the double elimination tournament. Julian Drew led the team with three hits. Lukas Olsson and Ryan Weiss combined to drive in eight of the Lakers nine runs. Kieran Finnegan got the start for Oswego. he pitched four and two thirds innings, allowing nine hits, six runs, only two earned, walking two and striking out two.

With the loss to Cortland, the Lakers played another game on Friday, this one against the Brockport Golden Eagles. Oswego struck first, Ryan Weiss and Julian Drew each driving in a run on singles for an early 2-0 lead. Brockport tied the game in the third inning, a two run single off the bat of Tom Kretzler. Frank Levanti scored on a balk in the bottom of third to take the lead back for the Lakers, but Brockport tied it with a double in the top of the fifth. In the top of the seventh, back to back solo home runs gave the Golden Eagles the lead, and a one run single later in the inning extended the lead to 6-3. Ryan Weiss drove in one in the bottom of the seventh for the Lakers final run of the game. Brockport had four runners cross the plate in the top of the eighth and two more in the top of the ninth for the 12-4 win, and knocked Oswego out of the tournament. Ryan Enos’ three hits led the Lakers. Ryan Weiss had a team leading two RBIs. Anthony Van Fossen got the start for Oswego. He pitched six and two thirds innings, allowing five runs on ten hits, not walking any and striking out two. Cortland would beat Brockport in the Championship game.

After Monday’s selection show, the Lakers will head down to Glenside, Pennsylvania, just north of Philadelphia. They will take on Elizabethtown College from Elizabethtown, PA. The Elizabethtown Blue Jays won the Landmark Conference Championship after finishing the regular season in third with a 22-20 (11-7 Landmark) record. The Blue Jays are led by third basemen Robbie Bertucio. He had 59 hits in 42 games played this season, a .376 batting average with eight doubles and three home runs, driving in 32. Their second best hitter was outfielder Andrew Fisher. He hit .329 with six doubles. They also have pitcher/outfielder Ben Watson. At the plat hit hit .408 with eight doubles and eight home runs and two triples, he hit three home runs in one game. On the mound he pitched 18 innings, allowing 16 runs, walking 16, and striking out 14. On the mound they are led by Eric Sipling. In 47 innings, he had a 2.09 ERA, in 18 appearances, only one start, he struck out 46. Starter Tyler Dunbar pitched 75.2 innings, had a 4.64 ERA in 12 starts, he struck out 63. On the other side of the regional bracket is Arcadia University, the hosts of the regional, taking on Husson University.

Oswego baseball: SUNYAC playoffs preview

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State baseball team cliched the one seed in the SUNYAC playoffs over the weekend. All the games in the tournament will be played at the Laker Baseball Stadium. The tournament features three top 25 teams, Oswego (12), Cortland (13), and Brockport (22). The tournament is a double elimination style tournament with a potential seven total games being played. The first two games of the tournament will be played on Thursday, the first game will feature Oswego taking on the Plattsburgh Cardinals at noon. The second game of the day will see Cortland taking on Brockport at 3:00 P.M.

The Lakers are currently on a 20 game win streak against the Cardinals dating back to March, 2015. This season they won all three games, game one 19-6, game two 8-2, and game three 17-5. In the three games, Kyle Lauria went 9-16 (.563), and drove in eight runs in the series. Ryan Enos had four doubles in the series. Tishawn Featherstone had two home runs in the first game. The Laker pitching staff held the dangerous Alex Kornblau to 2-10 (.200) over all three games.

The Lakers are led by four dangerous hitters at the top of their lineup, Paul Tamarro, Ryan Enos, Kyle Lauria, and Lukas Olsson. Tammaro (64) and Enos (60) are one and two in the SUNYAC hits leaders. They also sit atop the batting average leader board hitting .481 and .476 respectively. Enos also sits second in the SUNYAC in doubles with 16, with Tammaro right behind at 14. Enos and Olsson are in a three way tie for fourth in the conference home runs leaders with eight each. Enos and Lauria tied for second in stolen bases at 24 each, with Tammaro in fourth with 23. Plattsburgh is led by a dangerous hitter of their own, Alex Kornblau. He is fourth in the SUNYAC in batting average (.396), fifth in doubles (11), and ninth in RBIs (33).

In the game, expect the Lakers to put Kyle Finnegan or Anthony Van Fossen on the mound. Finnegan has been the Lakers ace, with a 2.36 era in 61 innings pitched, striking out 54 batters. He pitched a majority of the seven inning games of the doubles headers, doing a complete game four of his ten starts. For the Cardinals, you may see Sean Malamud or Peter Gregory. Malamud has the most innings on the Plattsburgh staff, 56, and the lowest ERA, 4.98.

After Thursday, the loser of the Oswego-Plattsburgh game will play the loser of the Cortland-Brockport game in game one Friday. The winners of the two Thursday matchups will face off in game two Friday. The third and final game on Friday will be the winner of Friday’s first game vs the loser of Friday’s second game. Saturday will the championship matchup. It will feature the winner of Friday’s second game taking on the winner of Friday’s third game, with a potential second game being played if the team who hasn’t lost yet, the winner of Friday’s second game, loses.

Baseball sweeps final weekend, secures one seed for SUNYAC tournament

ALLEGHENY, N.Y. — The Oswego State baseball team travelled to Fredonia for the final weekend of the season before SUNYAC playoffs. A three game set with game one on Friday and the other two games Saturday.

The first game of the series was played at SUNY Brockport, and Oswego showed why they are the best team in the conference and one of the best in the nation. In only the top of the first inning, the Lakers asserted their dominance. The first three batters reached base, and Paul Tammaro scored during Lukas Olsson’s at bat on a wild pitch. Olsson would then clear the bases with a three run home run to give the Lakers a 4-0 lead. Two more runs crossed the plate before the end of the inning, Fredonia grabbed their bats for the first time down 6-0. A scoreless bottom half of the first and top of the second led to Fredonia finding the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Back to back singles were followed by a double scoring one, and then two ground outs scored two more, Fredonia only down 6-3. The top of the fourth was when the Lakers struck again, sending home four runners for a 10-3 lead. A Jacob Levine grand slam in the fifth made in 14-3. In the sixth inning two more runs scored for the Lakers making it 16-3. A solo shot in the bottom of the seventh for Fredonia made it 16-4. Seven runs scored for Oswego in the eight making it 23-4. The Blue Devils scored three in the eighth and one in the ninth making it 23-8, but Oswego offensive dominance reigned supreme in this one. Five Lakers had two hits during the game. Lukas Olsson and Jacob Levine both had four RBIs. Jacob Sanders started for the Lakers, going 4 innings, allowing three runs on three hits, walking one and striking out three.

Games two and three were played at Alleghany High School. Game two was much different than game one. The first two innings were scoreless. In the top of the third, Paul Tammaro hit a one-out solo shot to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. In the top of the fourth, a Julien Drew bases loaded single brought home the second run of the game and a Paul Tammaro single an out later drove home the third. In the bottom of the fourth, a two run shot by the Blue Devils brought closed the gap to 3-2. In the top of the fifth, Lukas Olsson answered the two run homer with one of his own. The pitching took over the rest of the game, no runs scoring through the remaining two and a half innings. Paul Tammaro led the Lakers with three hits. Tammaro and Lukas Olsson tying for the RBI lead with two each. Kieran Finnegan got the start for Oswego. he pitched five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks, striking out four. He was relieved by Ben Wilcox, who pitched the remaining two innings, giving up one hit and striking out two. The Lakers also clinched the SUNYAC title with the win.

In game three, the Lakers struck in the first inning. A Ryan Weiss single scoring Ryan Enos from third. In the top of the third, a Tishawn Featherstone grand slam extended the lead to 5-0. In the top of the fourth, Kyle Lauria hit a two run home run for the Lakers sixth and seventh runs. The next runs weren’t scored until the top of the ninth, with the Lakers hitting their third home run of the game, this one off the bat of Brett Myers, a three run shot, giving the Lakers a 10-0 lead. Fredonia would cross the plate once in the bottom of the ninth to avoid the shutout, but the Lakers finished a dominating series with a 10-1 lead. Blake VanDreason and CJ McCarthy led Oswego in hits with two each. Nine other Lakers got a hit. Tishawn Featherstone‘s grand slam gave him the teams RBI lead. Anthony Van Fossen got the start for Oswego, going four innings, allowing two hits and one walk, striking out two. Jai Sharma pitched two innings of relief, striking out four.

The Lakers finished their season with a 28-8 (16-2 SUNYAC) record. The will play the Plattsburgh Cardinals in game one of the SUNYAC playoffs Thursday. D3baseball.com’s rankings were last updated on May 3, the Lakers sitting in 14th.

Oswego State baseball goes 2-1 on Senior Day weekend

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State baseball team faced off against rival SUNY Brockport this weekend in a three-game series, winning the the first two contests 2-0 before dropping the final game 13-11. This was the first home series of the season for the Lakers after multiple games were either postponed or moved to a different location.

In Saturday’s Senior Day game, the Lakers celebrated a total of 12 seniors, including Ryan Enos who’s emerged as one of the best division III players in the country. However, game one of the series was mainly a battle between the pitchers — not something that was expected for these juggernaut offenses. The first five innings of the contest were scoreless with both teams combining for just four hits. It wasn’t until the sixth inning where a single from Julian Drew brought in Kyle Lauria for the Lakers first score. In the top of the seventh inning, the Golden Eagles hit one deep into center field, but Lauria tracked the ball down and made a tremendous diving catch to keep the game 1-0. Oswego carried this momentum into their next at-bat where Jacob Levine hit a double to help Blake Vandreason cross home plate. Oswego went on to win the Senior Day contest 2-0 with Jacob Sanders and Sean Dertinger allowing a total of two hits.

Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader started much the same as the first game of the series for the Lakers, retiring the first six Brockport batters. Though, unlike the prior contest, Oswego got their offense rolling early on as they took a two-run lead in the bottom of the first. Paul Tammaro, Enos, and Lauria all reached base with Ryan Weiss bringing home Enos off a single. Jacob Levine the singled opposite of Weiss to the right side, allowing Lauria to reach home plate. In the fourth inning, the Golden Eagles were in a threatening position with men on first and second. After a strikeout by Kieran Finnegan, the Lakers collected the third out of the inning on a line out to third base. Oswego was then able to shutout Brockport through the remaining innings and went on to win 2-0 once again. Finnegan moved to 5-0 on the season, allowing just three hits while facing 26 batters.

Game 2 of the Sunday doubleheader was completely night and day from the previous two games. Brockport struck first to take a 1-0 lead in the opening inning, with Oswego responding with three runs of their own in bottom of the first. After a leadoff walk by Tammaro, Enos advanced him to third with a huge double to left field. Lauria hit a sac fly to center field, which brought in Tammaro for their first run. Soon after, Ryan Weiss was walked and Enos stole third base in the process. Levine then took after Lauria and hit a sac fly to center field, bringing in Enos for the Lakers second run. After a CJ McCarthy walk, Julian Drew slung one to center field, pushing the Laker lead to 3-1. In the top of the third, Brockport cut the Oswego lead with a run of their own. After some back-and-forth stellar pitching, the Lakers put two more on the board in the fourth inning and another in the fifth, giving them a 6-2 lead. In the top of the sixth, the momentum began to swing Brockport’s way. The Golden Eagles racked up seven hits and brought in five runs to take the lead. Then in the seventh inning, Brockport put up two more runs, bringing the score to 9-6. Though, the onslaught wouldn’t stop there as the away team scored four more runs in the eighth inning to make the score 13-6. Oswego began to rally back in the final two innings, but were just able to muster five runs. Brockport took game three of the series by a score of 13-11.

Following the series, Oswego moves to 21-7 on the season and 11-1 in the SUNYAC Conference — tied for first with Cortland. The Lakers will have the chance to carry this momentum into their next game against Ithaca College before hosting Cortland at home next weekend. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday in Ithaca, NY.

Baseball loses two non-conference games

Rochester N.Y. — The Oswego State baseball team took a trip to Rochester to take on two non-conference opponents, The University of Rochester and St. John Fisher College. The first game was on Tuesday against the Rochester Yellowjackets. Oswego got started early, a one out home run by Ryan Enos in the top of the first saw them grab the 1-0 lead. Rochester wasn’t letting the Lakers get comfortable though, and in the bottom of the first they led off with back-to-back walks and then a three run home run left. A double later in the inning drove one more home, and the Yellowjackets had a 4-1 to start the second frame. The bottom of the second saw Rochester grab two more runs on a two-out, bases loaded single. The Lakers found the scoreboard again in the third, a lead of double followed by a hit-by-pitch brought Kyle Lauria to the plate. He would hit it out and drop the deficit to 6-4. In the bottom of the fourth the Yellowjackets drove in one more to extend their lead to 7-4, and in the bottom of the fifth they would tally their eighth and final run of the game. Innings six through nine were scoreless, and the Lakers were handed their fourth loss of the season. A total of eight batters were hit in the game, four by each side.

The Lakers road trip in Rochester continued on Wednesday with a 3 P.M. matchup with the St. John Fisher Cardinals. A scoreless first inning was followed by five run bottom of the second for the Cardinals. A one out RBI single got the first run, a walk would load the bases, and then another walk brought in the second. After an out, a third walk of the inning drove in the third walk, and a single drove in runs for and five. The Lakers answered the following frame, a bases loaded, two-out double by Lukas Olsson cleared the bases and got the Lakers up to a 5-3 deficit. The Lakers tied it in the fourth. Ryan Enos was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to bring in the fourth run, and a Kyle Lauria walk brought home the fifth of the game for the Lakers. A scoreless fifth, was followed by the Lakers grabbing a single run in the top of the sixth. St. John Fisher tied it in the bottom of the eight at six on a solo shot to left. The Lakers wouldn’t score in the top of the ninth. The Cardinals led of the bottom of the ninth with a walk. The runner advanced to second on a passed ball, and was then driven in on a walk-off double, 7-6. Lukas Olsson led the Lakers with three RBIs, Kyle Lauria had two, and Ryan Enos driving in the final one.

The Lakers next matchup comes on the road against the Plattsburgh Cardinals for a three game set. Game one played on Friday, the other two played Saturday. The team now sits at a 13-5 (3-0 SUNYAC).

Oswego State baseball DOMINATES this weekend

WINCHESTER, V.A. — The Oswego State baseball team took a road trip to play in three contests in Virginia this weekend. The first game against Keystone was an absolute massacre as Oswego poured on twenty-seven runs by the end of the contest. The Lakers managed to score in every inning besides the fourth, and managed to ball out with twenty-three hits throughout the game. The most notable performance of this game was from senior Ryan Enos who shattered program records by cranking three homers, six total hits and five runs. A performance highly unlikely to be matched anytime soon. Graduate Student Lukas Olsson also scored five runs this game. Senior Leadoff batter Paul Tammaro proved why he has that role as he three for four with four runs scored as he had his first homerun of the season. Additionally Tammaro had 3 RBI’s. Center fielder Kyle Lauria scored 3 runs on the night in another impressive showing. Everyone got a chance to eat in this contest as this was the definition of a statement victory. The final score was 27-14. The Lakers would then take on Shenandoah University.

The Lakers had another dominant victory against Shenandoah University with the final score being 9-2. Senior Paul Tammaro was an absolute monster in this game hitting two homers in his first two at bats contributing to the Lakers early three run lead. Shenandoah did manage to score two runs, but the contest was never close. Graduate Student Ryan Weiss went 2-5, however both his were RBI’s giving Oswego some breathing room. Freshman Tishawn Featherstone and senior Ryan Enos both had RBI’s to seal this contest. On the mound, senior Kieran Finnegan had a fantastic day with ten total strikeouts. He managed to only let in two runs in six innings. The Lakers would face Shenandoah again the following day.

The Lakers completed the weekend sweep against Shenandoah. Sundays contest was much closer than the first encounter with a final score of 10-8. Similar to the last game Oswego went up early scoring four runs in the first two innings. Graduate student Lukas Olsson was a huge name in todays performance hitting 3 RBI’s. Per usual senior Ryan Enos had a day scoring two runs as well as an RBI. Other notable performances include graduate student Kyle Lauria who scored his first homer of the season as well as two RBI. Paul Tammaro also had himself a day with one run and an overall impressive performance. Shenandoah gave the Lakers a run for their money, however the Lakers stayed calm under pressure and got the job done, completing the weekend sweep. The Lakers take this momentum into next week as they play seven games in Florida. The first contest is against Ramapo College March 13th at 10:30am.

Oswego State Falls to Cortland in SUNYAC Championship

CORTLAND, N.Y. — In a thrilling three game SUNYAC Baseball Championship Series that featured 11 lead changes between the two teams, the Oswego State Baseball team was defeated by Cortland. Oswego took game one from Cortland in a late comeback fashion, but Cortland won game two in extra innings and game three to take the series. Cortland outscored Oswego 25-23 between the three games, which featured one run wins for each team in games one and two and a two run win for Cortland in the deciding game.

Game one was tied 2-2 after four innings, Kieran Finnegan had some early command issues surrendering four walks which resulted in two runs in the first inning while allowing just one hit in the frame. Finnegan bounced back well, giving up no hits in the next three innings and just one walk. Oswego’s two runs came in the top of the second on a Hunter Holliday RBI double and Julian Drew RBI single. Cortland put up two runs on four hits against Finnegan in the 5th which led to Anthony Van Fossen entering the game for the Lakers. Van Fossen was brilliant out of the bullpen as the junior threw 3.1 hitless innings for the Lakers. SUNYAC RBI leader Kyle Lauria trimmed the deficit to one run with an RBI single in the 7th, and the Lakers kept going with a big two out rally in the 8th. Oswego scored three runs in the 8th as Myles Felton scored on a wild pickoff throw to tie it, Brendon Frank singled in Paul Tammaro, and Ryan Enos followed with an RBI double to score Frank. Mike Di Salvo came in to pitch the 9th but gave up a leadoff home run to make it a one run lead for the Lakers. Di Salvo had the tying run on third base, and the winning run on second with no outs but got back to back flyouts to finish the 7-6 game one Oswego win.

The highest scoring game of the weekend came in an 11-10 extra inning walk off win for Cortland. Game two featured 31 total hits and three home runs for each team, as it was Tammaro, Ryan Weiss, and Felton each hitting long balls for the Lakers. At least one team scored in all ten innings, as Cortland had a four run and multiple three run frames scoring in bunches, but Oswego scored more consistently with one or two runs in seven of the ten innings. Frank and Weiss led Oswego’s offense as both of the seniors contributed four hits apiece. After ten innings and a ton of offense, it was Scott Giordano from Cortland with a walkoff home run forcing a decisive game three the following day.

Oswego and Cortland had identical runs scored in each frame from the 1st to 4th, as the game was tied 5-5 after four innings. Oswego scored one in the top of the 5th but Cortland answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame that would be the tying and eventual winning run, before tacking on an insurance run in the 6th. Enos was 3-4 with a home run, a double, and 4 RBIs in the final game of the series but it was not enough as Cortland took game three 8-6 to win the SUNYAC Championship.

The season is not over yet for Oswego as the Lakers got an at-large bid into the 48 team NCAA Division III Baseball Championship. There are eight separate locations with six teams at each site; the winning team from each of the eight sites will compete in the Division III World Series in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Oswego was selected to be the second seed at the Hartford, Connecticut Region which is being hosted by Trinity College (Connecticut), a team that Oswego was scheduled to play against earlier this year. The teams in order of seeds 1-6 playing at the Hartford Regional are Southern Maine, Oswego State, Wheaton (Massachusetts), Salve Regina, Husson, Johnson & Wales (Providence). This is Oswego’s sixth consecutive season qualifying for the Championship, and the Lakers are looking for their first World Series appearance since 2018. Games will take place Thursday, May 27th through Sunday, May 30th and Oswego will play their first game at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Oswego State Baseball Travels to Cortland for SUNYAC Championship

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Oswego Baseball goes on the road to Cortland for the SUNYAC Baseball Championship on Friday, May 21st at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., with a game three on Saturday, May 22nd at 12:00 p.m. if necessary. Oswego and Cortland have not played against each other the past two seasons, but the teams are familiar with each other as this will be the fifth straight tournament that the Lakers and Red Dragons meet in the finals. Cortland won the tournament back in 2015 and 2016, but Oswego claimed the crown in 2018 and 2019. Weather cancelled the 2017 tournament resulting in top seeded Oswego to be crowned the champions, and COVID cancelled the 2020 tournament. Oswego will look to claim its 16th overall title and 4th in a row, while Cortland seeks its 35th overall championship.

Friday’s games will also mark the first time there have been fans permitted at a SUNYAC game since March 2020, as SUNY Cortland campus is now open to visitors and New York State has reduced restrictions on social distancing. Fans will only be able to attend if they are on an official list collected by the conference office. Each school was allowed to submit a list of 150 fans, bringing the game total to 300 spectators. Since the attendance is below 500, spectators do not need to provide a negative COVID-19 test or show a vaccination card. Fans are required to adhere to CDC, New York State, and SUNY Cortland COVID-19 guidelines.

#21 Oswego comes in at 23-3 (14-2 SUNYAC) after a 8-2 and 11-4 sweep over Oneonta in Oswego last weekend in the semifinals. Cortland, ranked one spot behind Oswego comes in at #22 nationally with a 25-5 (14-2 SUNYAC) record. Last weekend Cortland also got a semifinal sweep in the form of 11-4 and 3-1 wins over Brockport. There have been eight weeks of the season, which means eight SUNYAC Baseball Athlete of the Week awards, as well as eight SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week awards. Oswego has claimed four of the sixteen awards in the form of three position players and one pitcher, and Cortland has won five awards by four position players and one pitcher.

Oswego takes on Cortland in the SUNYAC Baseball Championship at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 21st at Cortland. If necessary, game three will be played on Saturday, May 22nd at noon. The winner gets an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament which kicks off next week.

Oswego State Baseball Heads into SUNYAC Championship

OSWEGO, N.Y. — SUNYAC Baseball playoffs kick off Saturday, May 15th as Oswego hosts Oneonta and Brockport goes on the road to take on Cortland. Games are scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday with a if necessary game three slated for 12:00 on Sunday, May 16th.

Cortland comes in as the number one overall seed and ranked 22nd in the country, at 14-2 as the nationally ranked Red Dragons look for their 35th conference championship. Scott Giordano leads the Cortland offense with a .455 batting average, four home runs, and 25 RBIs, the first two stats rank 3rd and the third stat ranks 5th in the SUNYAC. Former SUNYAC Baseball Athlete of the Week Daniel Coleman has four home runs to his name as well to go along with 26 RBIs which is good for 4th in the conference. Cortland also touts the three lowest ERAs in the SUNYAC, Ryan Flansburg leads with a 0.93 ERA in 29 innings, former SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week Zack Durant comes in with a 2.18 ERA in 29 innings, and Brandon Buchan carries a 2.20 ERA in 28.2 innings of work. Cortland met their first round opponent, Brockport back on May 3rd in the regular season. Brockport took game one 9-4 and Cortland took game two 9-1.

Brockport faces Cortland in the first round as the second seed in the West division, as the Golden Eagles have a 12-4 SUNYAC record. Brockport has two hitters in the top five for batting average in the SUNYAC, former SUNYAC Baseball Athlete of the Week Matt O’Dair led all hitters in the regular season with a .478 and Daniel Delgazio is 5th with a .423 average. Brockport has hitters in 1st and 5th in another hitting category, as Tom Kretzler led all hitters with eight home runs, and Jake Sisto had four long balls of his own. On the mound, former SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week Trevor McCarthy is 2nd in the SUNYAC in strikeouts with 37, and Andrew Huffman is 5th in the stat with 33 punchouts. Brockport goes on the road to take on Cortland with the winner in the two of three series advancing to the SUNYAC championship.

Oswego hosts the other first round matchup, as the first seed in the West and 21st nationally ranked Lakers come in with a 14-2 regular season record. Oswego is looking to win their 16th SUNYAC title as well as their fourth consecutive. Paul Tammaro in the leadoff spot has a .444 batting average which is good for 4th in the SUNYAC. The top three RBI leaders in the SUNYAC are also in the Oswego order in the form of Kyle Lauria, Ryan Enos, and Ryan Weiss who have 38, 34, and 31 RBIs apiece. Brendon Frank and Lauria are tied for 1st in the conference in stolen bases with 18 each, and Enos ranks 4th with 12 as all three former SUNYAC Baseball Athlete of the Week winners are threats both at the plate and on the basepaths. On the mound, former SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week Kieran Finnegan ranks 5th in the conference in ERA with a 2.40 in 30 innings of work. Oswego faced first round opponent Oneonta on May 6th in the regular season. Oswego took game one 19-5 and Oneonta won game two 5-2.

Oneonta goes on the road to take on Oswego in the first round as the second seed in the East, the Red Dragons have the only losing record of any of the four playoff teams with their 6-10 SUNYAC record. The biggest strength for Oneonta is their two headed monster on the mound in the form of Michael Losak and Sean Liquori. Losak is 4th in ERA in the SUNYAC with a 2.30 through 27.1 innings, and the duo is 3rd and 4th in strikeouts in the conference with 35 and 34.

SUNYAC Baseball playoffs start Saturday, May 15th at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. as Cortland hosts Brockport and Oswego hosts Oneonta. If Cortland wins they will host the championship the following weekend, if Cortland loses but Oswego wins then Oswego will host, if both teams lose then Brockport will host the championship. Oswego State Baseball Team Sweeps Plattsburgh State to Conclude Regular Season

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The #22 ranked Oswego State Baseball team finished the 2021 regular season victorious as they defeated Plattsburgh State in consecutive games on Sunday. The Lakers now move to 21-3 on the season and will look ahead towards their best-of-three semifinals matchup versus SUNY Oneonta.

Oswego was dominant in both contests, defeating the Cardinals 16-2 in game one and 13-3 in game two. The Lakers had 20 hits in the first game, led by Paul Tammaro and Dylan Frawley who each had three. Junior outfielder, Tim Shinto, had a great performance as he totaled 4 RBIs off 2 hits. Anthony Van Fossen also finished his season 4-0 after shutting out the Cardinals in five innings. Game two ended in similar fashion with Brendon Frank, Kyle Lauria, and Myles Felton combining for 7 hits in their final regular season game. Junior pitcher, Kieran Finnegan, finished his season 5-0 following his 4-inning performance. With Sunday’s victories, the Lakers improve their win streak vs the Cardinals to 15-0 dating back to 2014. Prior to the pair of games, the Oswego State Baseball team recognized ten seniors including Mike Di Salvo, Jake Terrill, Jonathan Luppens, Hunter Holliday, Ronald Loomis, Connor Stanton, Myles Felton, Kyle Lauria, Brendon Frank, and Dylan Frawley.

Oswego had previously locked up the #1 seed in the SUNYAC West division and will now set their focus on their upcoming playoff matchup versus Oneonta. The teams last played in a May 6th doubleheader resulting in a 19-5 Laker win and a 5-2 Red Dragon win. The best-of-three series is set for Saturday, May 15th starting at noon. The second game is scheduled for 3 p.m. an if necessary, game three will be played on Sunday at noon.

Oswego State Baseball Team Prepares for Final Regular Season Doubleheader

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The #22 ranked Oswego State Baseball team (19-3) is set to take on the Plattsburgh State Cardinals (6-12) on Sunday, May 9th to conclude the 2021 regular season. This is the first doubleheader between the Lakers and Cardinals in over two years, with their last matchups resulting back-to-back Laker victories. Both teams will look to finish their seasons off strong as the SUNYAC tournament starts next week.

The Lakers are have been having an outstanding 2021 season thus far. Prior to their loss to Clarkson University on Tuesday, Oswego went on a 16-game winning streak. The Lakers now come in to Sunday’s contest on a single-game losing streak following their 5-2 loss to SUNY Oneonta on May 6th. Though, the Lakers would win the first game of the doubleheader 19-5. Plattsburgh hasn’t endured the same success this season. While they are coming off a victorious two-game sweep against the New Paltz Hawks, the Cardinals went 2-6 in their previous eight games. Oswego will be lead by senior infielder, Kyle Lauria, who leads the team in home runs (3) and RBIs (36). Junior infielder, Paul Tammaro, will also look to cap off his stellar season as he leads the team in hits with 35 and has a .422 batting average. Senior pitcher, Ronald Loomis, could pitch his final regular season game for Oswego and look to surpass 50 career strikeouts.

With the Lakers already locking up the #1 seed in the SUNYAC West division last week, they will aim to finish their dominant 2021 regular season with two more victories. Game 1 is set for 1:00 p.m. while game 2 will begin at 4:00 p.m. at Laker Baseball Field.

Oswego State Baseball Splits with Oneonta in SUNYAC Crossover

ONEONTA, N.Y. — The Oswego State Lakers baseball team traveled to Oneonta thursday for a doubleheader SUNYAC crossover matchup against the Red Dragons. Oswego would only be able to secure one of the possible two wins today by taking the first game in dominant fashion by a score of 19-5 but then falling in the second game 5-2.

In the first game it was all Lakers as they were up 6-3 after three innings and up 8-3 after four. Oswego’s bats would continue to remain hot by propelling 6 runs in the seventh inning to put them up 17-5. Led by senior Ryan Enos he was able to hit for a pair of doubles and a home run. However not only the upperclassmen came out to shine in the first game, freshman Jacob Levine was able to provide 4 RBI’s for Oswego as well. Moving on to the second game Oneonta was able to edge the lakers by a score of 5-2. Oswego would not have the hot offense in this matchup only generating 2 runs in seven innings as well as only 5 hits. The Red Dragons were able to jump off early by getting three runs in the first three innings including two individual home runs in the third. Brandon Frank and Julian Drew were the only Lakers to generate RBI’s. Looking on the other end at the mound, Oneonta senior pitcher Michael Losak was able to steal the show and throw 120 pitches in a complete game to carry them to the win.

Oneonta now sits at 11-9 overall this season with the split and 6-8 in the SUNYAC East division and currently are in second . The team looks forward to Saturday for a doubleheader against another west division foe in the Brockport Golden Eagles with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. As for the Lakers, they have now gone 2-2 in their last 4 to move to 19-3 overall and 12-2 in the SUNYAC and secure the first place seed in the West division. They will look to bounce back on track with a double header on Saturday as well against an East division opponent in the Plattsburgh Cardinals who have not won in Oswego since 2014. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. for the first game and approximately 3:00 p.m. for the 2nd game. Both games will be played at the Laker Baseball Field.

Oswego State Baseball Bounces Back in Doubleheader

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Baseball team split with the Clarkson Golden Knights on Tuesday afternoon at Laker Baseball Field. This was Oswego’s first loss since April 3rd which was against the Brockport Golden Eagles. Clarkson was able to take game one 12-9 after scoring eight runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Lakers bounced back in game two to get the doubleheader split. Oswego won 11-8 to secure their seventeenth win of the 2021 season. However, the Lakers win streak was snapped and ended after sixteen consecutive victories coming against SUNYAC and non-conference opponents.

The first contest featured Oswego getting out to an 8-0 lead through the first two innings. This due to Paul Tammaro, Brendon Frank, Kyle Lauria, and Myles Felton all had RBI hits to start the game off strong. Jake Terrill represented the Lakers on the mound for a majority of the game, pitching for over five innings which featured five strikeouts. Jonathan Luppens and Thomas Pecchia would also see time on the mound during game one. Clarkson shot back in the top of the fifth inning with two runs to get on the board. The Golden Knights would add to their total in the sixth inning with eight runs to take over the lead from the Lakers. Oswego was unable to get any more after the bottom of the sixth and Clarkson would snag two more insurance runs before the completion of the game.

Game two had a similar storyline with a different result as the Oswego State Lakers were able to maintain the lead over the course of the contest after a strong start in the first two innings. The Lakers got the game started with Lauria hitting a 3-run homerun and Felton adding his own in the second inning. Clarkson once again were alive innings later as the Golden Knights tallied seven runs over the course of the fourth and fifth inning. Oswego would remain with the lead and add to their totals with two insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to finish the contest.

The Lakers now look ahead to Oneonta this afternoon with a cross-over doubleheader in Oneonta. This will consist of the 64th and 65th meetings between the two teams and Oswego having the lead record with 38-25 versus Oneonta. The last time these two teams met was in the SUNYAC semi final two years ago in May of 2019 where the Lakers would edge the Red Dragons 5-2.

These games have large implications for the Red Dragons as they currently are in second place in the East division with two games in hand on the New Paltz Hawks who are currently at 5-9. As for Oswego, they currently sit at the top of the West division at 11-1 and 6 points ahead of the 8-4 Brockport Golden Eagles. As for the Red Dragons, their most recent matchup they were swept by the New Paltz Hawks on this past Saturday by scores of 1-0 and 6-3 as they look to get punch their ticket to the SUNYAC playoff.

Oswego will look towards their veteran leadership with players such as Ryan Weiss who had 3 runs and two hits in his last matchup as well as junior Paul Tammaro who had 3 runs and 4 hits in his last two games. For Oneonta they are looking towards their younger studs such as sophomore Jake Barrett who leads the team in hits and is tied for first in runs as well as fellow sophomore Sean Liquori who is also tied for first in runs with 14 and is tied for second in hits with 16. First pitch for the first game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Oneonta with the second game expected to start around 4:00 p.m.

Oswego State Baseball Continues Dominance Against Fredonia

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Oswego State Baseball continues to remain hot in the SUNYAC West with a sweep over the Fredonia Blue Devils. The Blue Devils came into the port city looking for their first SUNYAC win of the season and were left short. Oswego State would sweep the Blue Devils with scores of 17-6 and 9-2 and improved to 11-1 in the division.

The Lakers were led in game one by Dylan Frawley who was 3-4 at the plate and had four runs scored as well as a pair of RBI’s. Blue Devils pitching was not up to par with the Lakers hitting as Oswego was able to get 13 hits in the first game alone as well as drawing 12 walks with senior first baseman Ryan Weiss being the team leader with three of them. As for the second matchup, the Lakers were kept at bay for the first two innings but then erupted with 4 runs in the third then two runs in their last two innings . Fredonia’s only runs were scored in the fourth inning at that point it was already 4-0 Lakers. Oswego was led this game by 2nd baseman Ryan Enos who led the team in runs with three. Kieran Finnegan was able to carry the pitching for most of the game pitching 6 of the 7 innings with striking out 6 to remain unbeaten at 4-0 on the year.

The Lakers now move to 17-1 on the season as well as 11-1 in the division, Fredonia now falls to 3-12 on the season and 0-12 in the SUNYAC West. The Lakers now have a chance to make history as they are two wins away from setting the program record for consecutive wins at 18 that was set back in 1982. Oswego will attempt to achieve this with a double header vs Clarkson University on Tuesday May 4th at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Oswego already swept the Golden Knights once this season and have won their last 7 as well. As for Fredonia they look to find their first SUNYAC victory since 2019 with a double header matchup against the Brockport Golden Eagles on May 5th starting at 1:00 p.m.

Oswego State Baseball Hosts Fredonia for SUNYAC West Doubleheader

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Lakers Baseball team rolls into Saturday to start the month of May with a doubleheader series against the Fredonia Blue Devils. These two teams are on different ends of the spectrum when it comes to success and failure as Oswego is coming in on a 14 game winning streak after sweeping the University of Rochester successfully at the beginning of this week with scores of 23-7 and 9-4. As for the Blue Devils, the group has struggled this season by not winning a single game in the SUNYAC. The last time the Blue Devils squad won a SUNYAC matchup was April 21st of 2019. Their only wins this season come in the non conference doubleheader with two of their three being in their most recent contest vs Alfred State.

Things look pretty optimistic for the Oswego State Lakers as they have not lost to Fredonia on their home field since the 2011 season. Fredonia has lost 10 of the previous 11 meetings and their last win came in 2018 on a neutral site at Lake Myrtle Park with the Blue Devils edging the Lakers 6-5. However this season has been all Oswego, winning all four of their meetings and the Lakers outscoring the Devils 50-19 in those four matchups.

As Fredonia looks to find their first SUNYAC win in over a year as well as continue their 2 game winning streak, the Lakers will plan to push their streak to 15 games and potentially 16 with a sweep. In the last matchup on April 20th, Oswego State jumped out early with a 5-0 lead after the first inning and would gradually increase their lead as the game went on with a 10-5 victory. All eyes will be on Oswego’s offense who are currently averaging almost 12 runs per game as well as Ryan Weiss who had two home runs, one of them being a grand slam in their last double header against Rochester. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. for the first game and 3 p.m. for the second at the Laker Baseball Field.

Oswego State Baseball Gets Set For Non-Conference Doubleheader

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Oswego State Baseball looks to extend their twelve game win streak and remain undefeated at home on Tuesday, April 27th at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. against the University of Rochester. Oswego took sole possession of first place in the SUNYAC West with a doubleheader sweep over Brockport on Saturday, April 24th, and the Lakers now have a 9-1 conference record. This non-conference matchup could extend the win streak as the Lakers continue to ride this momentum into the later part of the season.

Oswego has not lost a game since the first day of the season back on April 3rd, and ever since that loss the Lakers have been dominant. Oswego is outscoring opponents 155-85 and winning games by an average of five runs on the season. Five of the top eleven on base percentage (OBP) leaders in the SUNYAC are in the deep Laker lineup. Paul Tammaro and Ryan Enos are back to back in second and third, Myles Felton is in fifth, and Kyle Lauria and Ryan Weiss are tenth and eleventh in the stat. While he is highly unlikely to pitch Tuesday after throwing six innings on Saturday, Kieran Finnegan won SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week last week.

Rochester comes in at 16-5 and 10-2 in the Liberty League which is good for first place as the Yellowjackets have looked sharp all season long. Rochester and Oswego were scheduled to meet Thursday, April 22nd in Rochester but that doubleheader was canceled and Tuesday’s doubleheader will be the only day the two teams meet this season. Oswego and Rochester have met once in each of the past three full seasons, the Lakers winning all three meetings.

Oswego takes the field Tuesday, April 27th for a non-conference doubleheader against Rochester at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. at home. The Lakers will look to continue the momentum of the current twelve game win streak as the team gets closer to the nationwide Top 25.

Oswego State Baseball Gets Set For Brockport

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Oswego State Baseball looks to extend their ten game win streak in a home doubleheader Saturday, April 24th at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. against Brockport. Oswego is 11-1 (7-1) and their only loss comes to Brockport in a 14-2 loss in game two of a doubleheader at Brockport on April 3rd, the Lakers took game one 7-2. Brockport enters Saturday at 13-2 (7-1) and the Golden Eagles are tied with Oswego for first place in the SUNYAC West. The two teams look to be contenders heading into the SUNYAC Championship.

Ryan Enos led the Laker offense in the doubleheader against Brockport going 3-5 with two doubles, 2 RBIs, and a run, and Enos also leads the SUNYAC in RBIs with 20. Kyle Lauria is also towards the top of the RBI category in the conference, as the former SUNYAC Player of the Week ranks third in the conference with 17 RBIs to go along with his .364 average. Paul Tammaro leads Oswego and is second in the SUNYAC with a .467 batting average, and has 11 hits in his last 19 at bats. Kieran Finnegan picked up the win on the mound in game one against the Golden Eagles going four innings and allowing two hits and a run while striking out three. Finnegan’s 1.50 ERA is good for second best in the SUNYAC, and Finnegan also has ten strikeouts through twelve innings to his name.

Brockport comes in on a ten game winning streak of their own, with the game two win over Oswego being the first game of the win streak. Matt O’Dair leads the SUNYAC with a .548 batting average and has a hit in 13 of 14 games. O’Dair was 4-6 with a double, 4 RBIs, and a run in the doubleheader against Oswego, Daniel Delgazio was 5-8 against the Lakers with two doubles, and four runs. James Houlahan is another hitter to look out for on Brockport as he is hitting .444 with 12 RBIs and a home run, but Houlahan struggled against Oswego in his 1-8 day.

A win streak will be broken today as the Golden Eagles and the Lakers look to move head in the standings. Oswego State Baseball takes on Brockport at home on Saturday, April 24th at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. for a conference doubleheader. Oswego State Baseball Erupts Against Fredonia

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Oswego State Baseball swept a home doubleheader against SUNYAC West opponent Fredonia, on Saturday, April 10th. Oswego won 17-3 and 15-6, as the Lakers move to 7-1 (5-1 SUNYAC) on the year. Oswego’s offense has been on fire over the course of the win streak, and they did not slow down one bit in the 32 run effort against the visiting Blue Devils.

Oswego won game one of the Saturday doubleheader 17-3, highlighted by a nine run 4th inning which broke the game wide open. Nine Laker hitters had at least one RBI in game one, as the Lakers produced 15 hits. Kyle Lauria was 3-4 with 4 RBIs, and Ryan Enos was 2-3 with a double, 2 RBIs and 3 runs as the 3-4 hitters in the order led the way for the offense. On the mound, Kieran Finnegan held the Blue Devils to one run through six innings of work, while only allowing four hits and striking out five.

The Oswego offense kept their momentum rolling into the second game, with a 15-6 win. Ryan Enos and Kyle Lauria picked up right where they left off, Enos was 4-5 with a double, 5 RBIs, 3 runs, and Lauria went 2-3 with a triple and a home run, to go along with 3 RBIs and 3 runs in game two. Jonathan Luppens had a great day at the plate as well as he went 3-4 with 3 RBIs, a run, and a home run to mark the first multi home run game of the season for the Lakers.

Oswego State baseball expands their win streak to six games after the doubleheader sweep of Fredonia on Saturday. The Lakers open up a six game road trip on Wednesday, April 14th at Potsdam in a doubleheader scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. first pitches.

Oswego State Baseball Sweeps Alfred State

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Oswego Baseball got their second consecutive doubleheader sweep on Thursday as the Lakers have now won four in a row, and move to 5-1. The weather was beautiful in Oswego for the home opener, and the first home baseball game for the Lakers since April 23rd, 2019. The Lakers defeated Alfred State 6-3 in game one, and 8-0 in game two in a great day for both pitchers and hitters in an Oswego uniform.

Oswego scored in each of the first three frames of game one, leading 5-0 after 3, the Lakers dominated all day long. Each of the first five runs came courtesy of Alfred State mishap as two runs came on separate wild pitches, two runs came on fielding errors, and one run was walked in. Anthony Van Fossen was brilliant on the mound for the Lakers as he threw 6 innings of 1 hit, shutout ball. Van Fossen now holds a 0.82 ERA through 11 innings of work, as he gave up just one run on three hits in his last outing against Brockport, and he has shown he can be a reliable arm for the Lakers staff this year. At the plate, Ryan Weiss was 3-3 with a double, an RBI and a run. Oswego led 6-0 going into the final inning in which Alfred State gave the Lakers a little scare in a rally that featured 3 runs, but the Lakers would win game one 6-3.

The Lakers had 8 hits in the first game, but came out even hotter in the second game with 14 hits to go with 8 runs. While the Lakers offense was firing, Ronald Loomis who struggled in his first outing against Brockport put on an inspired performance on the mound as he threw 5 innings of two hit, shutout ball. After Loomis was pulled, the Oswego bullpen was outstanding, as Connor Van Dreason, Jacob Sanders, Sean Clifford, and Evan Dempsey each threw an inning apiece, and none of them gave up a hit. In the batters box, Kyle Lauria was 3-5 with 3 RBIs, Brendon Frank was 3-4 and contributed 2 runs, Paul Tammaro was 2-4 with a double and 2 runs, and Ryan Enos was 2-4 with a run and 2 RBIs.

The Lakers successfully defended home field in their doubleheader sweep behind a 14 run day from the offense, and the pitching staff held Alfred State to 5 hits all day long. The Lakers will defend home turf again Saturday, April 10th, when they take on Fredonia in a SUNYAC West doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. WTOP 10 will continue to provide coverage on the Oswego State Baseball team all season long.

Oswego State Baseball hosts Alfred State

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Oswego Baseball plays their first home games of the season in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, April 8th at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The Lakers offense went off with 35 runs on Tuesday against New Paltz, and now have their eyes set on Alfred State for the doubleheader on Thursday.

Oswego comes in at 3-1, they split a doubleheader at Brockport Saturday, April 3rd and then looked dominant in the doubleheader at New Paltz on Tuesday, April 6th in which they won games 24-12, and 11-3. The Lakers got contributions from just about every hitter in their order. Paul Tammaro was 5-7 with 3 RBIs and a double, Connor Stanton was also 5-7 with 2 doubles and 6 runs in the doubleheader. A pair of freshmen also shined as Jacob Levine was 3-9 with 2 home runs to bring his season total to 3, to go along with 5 runs and 6 RBIs on the day. Jai Sharma threw all 6 innings of game two in which he allowed 3 runs on 4 hits and struck out 8 batters. Some other Laker bats to look out for include Ryan Enos who carries a .500 average, to go with 2 doubles and 5 RBIs on the four game season, and Myles Felton who is batting .300 with 6 RBIs and 3 doubles. These players need to continue their solid performances if the Lakers would like to continue their win streak.

Alfred State is 7-9 coming into Thursday’s doubleheader, the Pioneers had a six game win streak which was snapped in game two of a doubleheader at University of Rochester on Wednesday, April 7th. The doubleheader at Oswego on Thursday will be the second doubleheader in as many days for the Pioneers. Matteo Avalone comes in batting .346, with 5 doubles, a triple, a home run, and 5 RBIs, and Justin LoTemple carries a .326 average to go with his team leading 3 home runs and 12 RBIs.

Oswego looks to keep their hot bats rolling into Thursday, and Alfred State will look to start another win streak.
