Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse Prepares for Clarkson University

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego Women’s Lacrosse team is set to play their second non-conference game of the season, taking on the Clarkson University Golden Knights on Wednesday, April 14th. The Lakers won their previous non-conference game vs Morrisville State in a 20-14 victory.

Oswego is coming off their first loss of the season, so they’ll look to rebound vs the Golden Knights. They were defeated by the Geneseo Knights 22-9 on April 12th, which dropped them to 3rd in the West division. Clarkson is entering the matchup on a four-game losing streak, with their most recent loss being a 5-11 defeat to William Smith College. Lakers leading scorer, Sela Wiley, will look to continue her hot streak vs Clarkson. She’s totaled 18 goals on the season and has a .500 shot percentage in 2021. Freshman midfielder, Shae McConnell, will also look to continue her stellar start as she has 13 goals and 2 assists this season. Though, they’ll have to contend the explosive Clarkson offense. The Golden Knights will be lead by junior midfielder and leading scorer, Grace Hagberg, who’s totaled 13 goals. Senior attack, Krysten Stone, is also having a great season. She leads the team in total points, including 11 goals and 5 assists. Oswego is 12-11 all-time vs Clarkson University, however the Golden Knights won their last matchup 9-5 in 2020. Faceoff is set for 4:00 PM at Laker Turf Stadium.

Oswego State Men’s Lacrosse Loses to Nazareth

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Men’s Lacrosse team hosted the Nazareth Golden Flyers on Tuesday, April 13th. The Lakers would lose their third game of the season by a score of 15-6 to the Golden Flyers. This was Oswego’s first non-conference game of the season after the first two were canceled back in March.

Nazareth would score the first two goals of the contest before Lucas Cioch tallied the first Oswego goal. The freshman would score two more over the course of the game to lead the Lakers on offense during the game and continue to be the leading point getter over the span of the 2021 season. The Riverhead, New York native now has five goals and three assists in his first three collegiate games. The two teams would then each score one more before the end of the quarter to make the scoreline 4-2 heading into the second quarter. The Golden Flyers would add six more goals in the second quarter to blow out the score heading into halftime. Nazareth continued right where they left off as the team got five more tallies in the second half. This would bring the Lakers out of reach of their first win of the season.

The men’s lacrosse team will be back in action on Friday against the Brockport Golden Eagles at Laker Turf Stadium. Face off is set for 4 p.m. and WTOP 10 will have all the action live from the field.

Oswego State Men’s Lacrosse Kicks off Non-Conference Play

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Oswego State Men’s Lacrosse is set to play their first non-conference game of the season against the Nazareth Golden Flyers on Tuesday, April 13th. The 0-2 Lakers squad is still looking for their first win of the 2021 season. After multiple cancellations and postponements, the Lakers fell to the Brockport Golden Eagles and the Cortland Red Dragons to begin their conference play. This non-conference game could give the Lakers the needed momentum to turn their season around and have a chance at making into the SUNYAC Championships for men’s lacrosse.

Oswego State has relied on multiple players to get offense so far through their first two contests. Freshman Lucas Cioch currently leads the team in points with two goals and three assists good for five points. Garrett Petrelli, another player to join the Lakers this season, has also contributed with a goal and assist in the game against Cortland. Liam Dollard and Weston Gray continue to add to their resumes as the players have both shown up on the score sheets in the start of the 2021 campaign. On defense, the Lakers are backstopped by senior Kevin O’Donnell, a familiar name in between the pipes. The goaltender has played every game since joining the squad in freshman year and currently holds a 14.00 goals against average and a .491 save percentage.

Nazareth enters the contest 1-5 overall this season with their one win coming against Keuka College in Empire 8 Conference play. The Golden Flyers have never lost a game against the Lakers in the 18 times the two colleges have faced off against each other. The last time these two teams played was back in the 2010 season when Oswego lost 14-2 on the road in Rochester. This year’s contest is set to begin at 4 p.m. at Laker Turf Stadium and WTOP 10 will be live from the field to cover all the action that unfolds between the two squads.

Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Geneseo Knights

GENESEO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse team lost their first game of the 2021 season on Monday, falling to the Geneseo Knights in a 22-9 defeat. This is the Lakers first SUNYAC loss after previously going 2-0 against SUNY Fredonia and Buffalo State in the west division. The nationally ranked Geneseo team was able to hold the Lakers offense which came out hot to start the 2021 season.

Geneseo came out of the gates firing, scoring six unanswered goals just seven minutes into the game, including three goals from senior attack, Hannah Marafioti. Lakers leading scorer, Sela Wiley, ended the Knights scoring run with a goal of her own. The Lakers faced a 5-goal deficit early in the first half, things weren’t looking great for the Lakers. Unfortunately, Oswego State wasn’t able to keep up with Geneseo’s high-powered offense for much of the game. The Knights went on three separate 6-goal scoring runs throughout the contest, effectively preventing any chance of a Laker comeback. Geneseo had three players score at least 4 goals, including Tessa Doody (4), Jacqui Thorsen (4), and Hannah Marafioti (6). Oswego was lead by Logan Castiglione, Kamryn Sherman, and Sela Wiley, who each scored two goals respectively. Oswego now falls to 2-1 in conference play, which currently places them third in their division. Oswego will have the opportunity to rebound in a out-of-conference matchup vs Clarkson University on April 14th at Laker Turf Stadium. WTOP 10 will be live at the field with all the action.

Oswego Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Buffalo State

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego Women’s Lacrosse team improved to 3-0 in the 2021 season on Saturday, defeating the Buffalo State Bengals 14-6. Oswego remains undefeated to start their season and moves to 2-0 in conference play, putting them in great position for a postseason run.

Buffalo State’s Samantha Burlow put the Bengals up early, scoring the game’s first goal three minutes into the half. However, that would be the only lead Buffalo State would have all game. Junior attack, Logan Castiglione, scored the Lakers first goal and followed that up with three consecutive assists. Freshman midfielder, Shae McConnell, who was recognized as Oswego’s Female Athlete of the Week on April 5th, scored four goals in Saturday’s performance. Sophomore midfielder, Sela Wiley, continued her stellar start to the season, totaling four goals and four assists. Oswego goalkeeper, Delaney Kendrick, also had her best outing of the season, racking up 9 saves versus the Bengals. The Lakers will now turn their attention to their highly anticipated matchup vs SUNY Geneseo, who lost their first game of the season on Saturday, falling to St. John Fisher College in a 11-10, 2-overtime loss. Faceoff is set for 4:00 p.m. at Geneseo.

Oswego State Baseball hosts Alfred State

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Oswego Baseball plays their first home games of the season in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, April 8th at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The Lakers offense went off with 35 runs on Tuesday against New Paltz, and now have their eyes set on Alfred State for the doubleheader on Thursday.

Oswego comes in at 3-1, they split a doubleheader at Brockport Saturday, April 3rd and then looked dominant in the doubleheader at New Paltz on Tuesday, April 6th in which they won games 24-12, and 11-3. The Lakers got contributions from just about every hitter in their order. Paul Tammaro was 5-7 with 3 RBIs and a double, Connor Stanton was also 5-7 with 2 doubles and 6 runs in the doubleheader. A pair of freshmen also shined as Jacob Levine was 3-9 with 2 home runs to bring his season total to 3, to go along with 5 runs and 6 RBIs on the day. Jai Sharma threw all 6 innings of game two in which he allowed 3 runs on 4 hits and struck out 8 batters. Some other Laker bats to look out for include Ryan Enos who carries a .500 average, to go with 2 doubles and 5 RBIs on the four game season, and Myles Felton who is batting .300 with 6 RBIs and 3 doubles. These players need to continue their solid performances if the Lakers would like to continue their win streak.

Alfred State is 7-9 coming into Thursday’s doubleheader, the Pioneers had a six game win streak which was snapped in game two of a doubleheader at University of Rochester on Wednesday, April 7th. The doubleheader at Oswego on Thursday will be the second doubleheader in as many days for the Pioneers. Matteo Avalone comes in batting .346, with 5 doubles, a triple, a home run, and 5 RBIs, and Justin LoTemple carries a .326 average to go with his team leading 3 home runs and 12 RBIs. 

Oswego looks to keep their hot bats rolling into Thursday, and Alfred State will look to start another win streak. Lakers take on the Pioneers Thursday, April 8th for a 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., doubleheader at the baseball diamond. No spectators will be present so fans can check out all the action on WTOP 10.

Oswego State Baseball prepares for New Paltz

Oswego State baseball takes the road Tuesday, April 6th for a 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. doubleheader at New Paltz. The Lakers come in at 1-1 after splitting a doubleheader Saturday, April 3rd at Brockport, winning 7-2, and then losing 14-2.

Ryan Enos and Myles Felton look to pick up where they left off for the Lakers, as they each had two doubles to go along with two RBIs last Saturday. Anthony Van Fossen and Kieran Finnegan also looked sharp on the mound in the season opener, as Van Fossen allowed one run and three hits over the course of his five innings, and Finnegan surrendered one run on one less hit than his counterpart over four innings. Tuesday’s doubleheader is the first two games of a six game in six day span, and it will be interesting to see how head coach Scott Landers handles his pitching staff Tuesday. 

The New Paltz Hawks are 2-0, they come in without playing in a live game in over two weeks, as they swept Skidmore in a doubleheader Sunday, March 21st 7-1 and 6-1. The Hawks offense showed some signs of promise in those two games, Justin Harvey was 4-8 with a home run and 4 RBIs, and Ryan Geraghty was 4-7 with a double and an RBI. New Paltz also features SUNYAC Week One Pitcher of the Week in Anthony Amoroso, who threw six shutout innings while surrendering two hits.

Oswego has the advantage in seeing live game action recently, but New Paltz has had this day circled for over two weeks now and both teams are ready to go. Oswego baseball takes on the New Paltz Hawks Tuesday April 6th in a 1:00 and 3:00 doubleheader in New Paltz.

Oswego State Baseball kicks off 2021 Season at Brockport

The Oswego State Baseball team takes the field on April 3rd for the first time in the 2021 season, after the first three games to start their season were postponed or canceled. The Lakers go on the road to Brockport for a 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. doubleheader against the Golden Eagles, as they begin their road to a fourth straight SUNYAC title.

The first pitch on Saturday will mark the first game for the Lakers since the last contest of their shortened 2020 season on March 8th, which was a 6-4 win at Arcadia. The Lakers have won three straight SUNYAC titles and looked like they would have a good chance at four straight in their abbreviated season. The Lakers return three graduate students as well as 13 seniors who are all looking to win yet another SUNYAC championship. Oswego lost lots of top players over the past two years, but return big bats in Ryan Weiss (.444 AVG, 2 2B, 6 RBIs in 2020), Paul Tammaro (.429 AVG, 6 runs, 2B in 2020), and Kyle Lauria (.360 AVG, 2 2B, 2 3B, 7 RBIs in 2020).

Brockport is off to a 3-1 start, with a doubleheader split at Oneonta, followed by a dominating doubleheader sweep at Fredonia in which they outscored the Blue Devils a combined 32-4 this past Tuesday, March 30th. The doubleheader against Oswego marks Brockport baseball’s first game on their home field this season. Brockport has a plethora of hitters off to scorching hot starts this season; James Houlahan (.529 AVG, 2B, 2 RBIs), Ryan Mansell (.500 AVG, 4 2B, 3 RBIs), Nick Pastore (.471 AVG, 2 3B, 4 RBIs), Ryan Voight (.364, AVG, 2 2B, 1 HR, 7 RBIs). 

Oswego pitchers will look to cool down the hot Brockport bats and the hitters will look to get off to a hot start right out of the gate. Oswego baseball starts their season Saturday, April 3rd at Brockport, with first pitches of the doubleheader scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. and WTOP 10 will continue to deliver content on the Oswego State Baseball team over the course of their 2021 season.

Oswego Men’s Lacrosse Takes on Brockport

OSWEGO, NY — The Oswego State Men’s Lacrosse team is set to make their 2021 season debut on Friday vs. SUNY Brockport. The Lakers have had their previous two games (vs Morrisville State and vs SUNY Oneonta) either postponed or canceled due to positive COVID-19 cases. This will be the first time the Men’s Lacrosse team has played a game since March of 2020 and their first time playing Brockport since April of 2019.

Oswego will be led by starting goalkeeper, Kevin O’Donnell, who will begin his senior season on Friday. O’Donnell, a four-year starter for the Lakers, is only 2 saves away from reaching 400 career saves. Once accomplished, he will become the first Oswego Men’s goalkeeper to surpass 400 saves since Wyatt Russo in 2016. Junior starting attackman, Weston Gray, will lead the Lakers offensively vs Brockport. Gray has totaled 26 goals the past two seasons, including 20 goals in 2019. This contest will be Brockport’s second game of the season as they fell to Alfred University in an 8-7 loss on March 20th. However, Friday’s game will be both teams’ first SUNYAC matchup of the season, making it more pivotal than ever to secure an early-season victory. The Oswego Men’s Lacrosse team is currently 9-10 against Brockport all time, but can even things up with a win on Friday. The game is set for a 4 p.m. face-off in Brockport. WTOP 10 will continue to provide coverage on the Oswego State Men’s Lacrosse team for the remainder of the season.

SUNYAC announces return of Spring Sports

OSWEGO, NY — Tuesday afternoon, SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras announced that the SUNYAC conference will be returning on March 20th with spring sports. The sports of baseball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, softball, women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field will all return as all of their seasons were cancelled last year when the COVID-19 pandemic begun.

The conference will be split into east and west divisions to limit travel and cost expenditures. The divisions will be based on geographic location with Interstate-81 being used to split New York state in two. For the sports of Women’s lacrosse and softball, two five team divisions will be used. Since Fredonia and Buffalo State do not sponsor men’s lacrosse programs, Cortland will compete in the west division and there will only be four teams per division. Lastly, women’s tennis will be without Buffalo State and Potsdam due to their lack of teams.

The other details that were announced yesterday regarding this decision revolve around logistical aspects of this season. Masks will be warn at all time except during the heat of the competition. No spectators will be allowed to watch games in person due to current New York State Department of Health guidelines. There will be regular weekly testing through each campus for athletes and team officials. Along with that, athletes will be tested three days prior to road trips. On those trips, no eating will be allowed on the buses and capacity must be reduced to 50 percent. During the game, there should be no handshakes and group celebrations.

SUNYAC Commissioner Tom DiCamillo stated that there will be more guidelines announced later along with schedules for every team and school. As of right now, the season will be opened with two women’s lacrosse match ups as Cortland plays Plattsburgh and Potsdam travels to Oneonta. WTOP 10 will continue to deliver news regarding SUNYAC spring sports in the future.

Coach Leone is SUNYAC Men’s Basketball Coach of the Decade

OSWEGO, NY — On Thursday, the SUNYAC announced the All-Decade team for Men’s Basketball. Three Lakers would make the team along with Oswego Lakers Head Coach Jason Leone being named the SUNYAC Men’s Basketball Coach of the Decade. Leone has been with the Lakers for nine seasons and has coached the team to four SUNYAC championships. The coach has a 181-75 (.707) overall record and a 114-48 (.704) conference record while at the helm of the team. Oswego has been to five NCAA tournaments which includes two trips to the Sweet 16. Coach Leone’s accolades include four SUNY Coach of the Year awards (2012, 2015, 2017, 2019) and three Regional Coach of the Year awards.

The Lakers went 19-8 last season and fell to the Brockport Golden Eagles in the semifinals round of the SUNYAC championship. The team posted a 7-3 home record along with going undefeated in neutral contests. Senior Joe Sullivan led the team with 14.6 points per game in front of freshman standout Jeremiah Sparks. The Men’s Basketball team will return next season after the conference postponed the winter season.

SUNY Oswego’s Campus Technology Services hosts Cyber Awareness Month

OSWEGO, N.Y.– SUNY Oswego’s Campus Technology Services hosts Cyber Awareness Month in the month of October. This Month is dedicated to the security of mobile devices and computers for students and staff on campus. Events have been held for various forms of cyber security and are open to anybody.

The Campus Technology Support urges everyone to be cautious of all your devices to avoid any further cyber-attacks. Some examples of suspicious cyber behavior include phishing emails or scams sent by people who are attempting to hack others on campus.

Campus Technology Services Help Desk Assistant Ian said he wanted to remind students not to  open or respond to suspicious emails, and to always check the source.

“One of the ones I thought was pretty convincing was a phishing email where they took our header and all they simply did was give you a link that said please log in here to confirm your account but when you clicked the link, it wouldn’t actually bring you to any of our sites or anywhere in Oswego. It basically brought to a page that looked like a log in and asked you for your username and password,”  Lenich said.

SUNY Oswego hosts 17th annual Great Pumpkin Run

OSWEGO, N.Y.– The Great Pumpkin Run lived up to its name this year by raising money for a great cause.  Members of the Oswego community came out on Saturday, October 14th, to participate in the 11th annual Great Pumpkin Run 5k and walk.  The event was hosted by SUNY Oswego’s fitness centers and served as fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Donations of five dollars were accepted at check in.

According to their website, the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s mission is to “save lives by meeting the most critical needs in their communities and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer.”

The race began at Hewitt Ballroom and continued around the campus for 3.1 miles. Some runners managed to complete the race in under twenty minutes while other participants chose to walk. Race winner Joe DeBona said finishing the race at 19 minutes and 17 seconds was his best record so far in college.

SUNY Oswego leaders send call to action to Congress

Some leaders of the SUNY Oswego community are urging congress to pass legislation in response to President Trump’s decision to end the Delayed Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

 SUNY Oswego president, Deborah F. Stanley, Faculty Assembly Chair, Lisa Glidden and Student Association President, Dalton Bisson composed a call to action to send to the NYS Congressional Delegation on Thursday.  

According to US Citizenship and Immigration services, the DACA program was announced by the Secretary of Homeland Security on June 15, 2012. It stated that “certain people who came to the United States as children and meet several guidelines may request consideration of deferred action for a period of two years”. Under DACA they could could also renew this deferred action and it also made them eligible for work authorization.

Ending the DACA program would impact “nearly 80,000 individuals in our nation [who] now face devastating alteration to their lives and aspirations and do not deserve the fate unfairly placed upon them” Stanley, Glidden, and Bisson wrote in the call to action. The call to action was emailed to SUNY Oswego staff and students Thursday morning.

The email illustrated how much Stanley, Glidden, and Bisson value members of the DACA program, called “Dreamers”, at SUNY Oswego and across the country. “We, as Americans, must be willing to shoulder the responsibility to assure that our nation’s laws reflect highly moral and deeply ethical positions. To refuse to do so in this instance would seriously debase our heritage as a nation of immigrants and hope” Stanley, Glidden, and Bisson wrote.
