Lakers Look to End Losing Streak
The Oswego women’s softball team will be hosting the Geneseo Knights this Saturday in a doubleheader. The Lakers enter the game on a two game losing streak but look to bounce back and get over the .500 mark in conference play. Geneseo is heading into this matchup with a 7 game win streak on the line including 3 shutouts during that stretch. The Lakers have not struggled putting runs on the board. In their last contest against Oneonta, they lost with 9 runners crossing the plate. Sophomore outfielder Rebecca Vilchez had two hits, two RBIs and one run scored in that game so she will be a big factor in the Lakers success. First pitch is set for 12 pm with the second game following immediately after.

Hansen Earns First Career Shutout
The Oswego State men’s hockey team defeated the Brockport Golden Eagles 3-0 on Saturday night in the battle for sole possession of second place in the SUNYAC. After the victory, the Lakers stay undefeated at the Marano Campus Center Ice Arena and move to 6-1-1 overall with a 4-0-1 conference record. Meanwhile, Brockport drops to 6-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the SUNYAC.
The first period did not result in a score by either team with defense playing a prominent role. However, Oswego was able to find the back net early in the second period as Aaron Huffnagle connected with Cameron Berry for the score. The goal had additional meaning with it leading to teddy bears being launched onto the ice for the annual Teddy Bear Toss. After a count, it was announced that 736 bears were collected for donation.
In the third period, the Lakers looked to extend their lead and they did with Joseph Molinaro sending a slapshot past Brockport goalie, Matt Schneider. This would not be the highlight of the period though as physicality between both teams was at a high. For the second straight home game, the Lakers saw one of the members of the opposing team earn a five minute major penalty as well as an ejection. With momentum on their side, Oswego was able to seal the win with a last second empty net goal by Mitch Herlihey.
Cedric Hansen manned the net for the Lakers playing the entire duration of the game while stopping 19 shots. The game marked the first shutout of his career.
Oswego will travel to Potsdam for another SUNYAC matchup on Friday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 pm.

Travel Ban Response

Oswego, NY – Oswego State President Deborah Stanley sent students and faculty members an email on Sunday morning in response to President Donald Trump’s recent executive order banning travel into the United States from seven Muslim majority countries including Iraq, Syria, and Iran for 90 days.
The ban affects both non-immigrants and immigrants as well as those with a student or scholar visa. Green card holders were originally affected by the ban. However, according the New York Times, that decision has been reversed.
“There is considerable uncertainty about its implications,” Stanley wrote. “We advise great caution on the part of our international students, faculty and staff to consider carefully any travel outside the country or consider deferring travel until there is more clarity about how the Executive Order will affect us.”
Oswego State does not have a study abroad or international education program in any of the seven countries. Stanley advises those who are from any of those countries and are either planning to travel or are currently outside of the United States to seek the advice of an immigration lawyer before making travel plans.
“SUNY Oswego has always been a welcome and hospitable home for international students and visitors since our founding over 150 years ago,” she wrote. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to international students, scholars and programs for the creativity, intellectual rigor and cultural diversity you bring to our campus.”
According to the New York Times, a federal judge partially blocked Trump’s ban on refugees and other foreign nationals who were being held at U.S. airports on Saturday night. Protests against the ban continue across the country.
