Filmmaker and Environmental activist to headline 11th annual Global Awareness Conference

OSWEGO, N.Y.– Fulbright Scholar and TED fellow Shalini Kantayya, a filmmaker and eco-activist will be making a free public keynote presentation at SUNY Oswego. Kantayya, whose film “Catching the Sun” was nominated for the Environmental Media Association Award for Best Documentary, has lectured at universities such as Princeton, Yale, and Stanford.
Kantayya will be presenting at The 2017 Hart Hall Global Awareness Conference. The theme this year will be “A Drop of Life – Water Crisis, Catching the Sun – Renewable Energy & Breakthrough: How Innovations Would Change the World”.
“Catching the Sun” was nominated for the 2016 Environmental Media Association Award for Best Documentary and has been translated in 35 languages.
Kantayya’s film “A Drop of Life” was used as a tool to organize for water rights in 40 villages across Africa, making a real-world impact in the lives of thousands.
The presentation will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, in Sheldon Hall ballroom for the 11th annual Hart Hall Global Awareness Conference.

SUNY Oswego students share Halloween excitement

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The trees are changing color, pumpkin spice is back, and Halloween is right around the corner. Students at SUNY Oswego shared their excitement with Reporter William Corsi.Of the 27 people who were polled about their plans for Halloween, 19 of them said they were going to dress up for Halloween and 16 of them said they will be going out to get candy and celebrating with friends.
Student Marina Pantoliano said that she likes Halloween is one of the only holidays where people really get into it besides Christmas.
Some students said certain aspects of halloween make them feel uncomfortable.
“People running around in masks kind of creeps me out,” Student Dalton Bisson said.
Halloween takes place on Tuesday this year.

Oswego Mayor Calls for 48 Hour Street Parking Ban

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The City of Oswego is asking for city residents to vacate all street parking for the next 48 hours.
Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow is calling for all vehicles to be removed from city streets, while the Department of Public Works works to clear the roads of snow and ice. The inclement weather and combination of snow and rain has caused many of the city’s drainage systems to clog.
“The significant weather event we are experiencing calls for the cooperation of all our citizens,” Barlow said. “In consultation with DPW Commissioner Tom Kells, I am requesting that all vehicles park off the road over the next 48 hours as the DPW works on snow removal and freeing the storm sewers from overflowing water.”
In addition, the Oswego City Police will continue issuing tickets and towing vehicles that are violating the city’s already existing parking ban from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m.
