Mr Phi. Significant
Oswego, N.Y- An annual male beauty pageant, originally hosted by sorority Delta Phi Epsilon, was given to Phi Sigma Sigma this year for undisclosed reasons. The official name of event was changed to “Mr. Phi Significant.”
The event’s message remains the same each year. It honors former Oswego State student Jennifer Knighton, a sister of Delta Phi Epsilon who passed away in an alcohol related accident on Jul. 19, 2009. Her father, Joe LaPoint, organized the event in her honor.
“This is the way I make peace and make sense of it, and to keep her legacy alive so that all the huge enormous promise and potential that she had didn’t just end when she left us,” he said.
Phi Sigma Sigma sister Morgan Rumpf co-hosted the event and says she’s honored to have LaPoint’s support year after year.
“The strength that it takes for him to get up on stage and continue year after year to be here in support and fly across the country for this event is just anything we could ask for in him,” she said.
Eight contestants competed in four categories; swimwear, evening attire, talent and questions. Delta Sigma Phi brother Rich Yonkers was the overall winner and crowned “Mr Phi. Significant.”
All proceeds for the event will go towards the Jennifer Knighton Scholarship Fund and the Kids In Need Foundation. -
Lakers Will Look to Move Over .500

After a disappointing loss at Ithaca, the Oswego State men’s lacrosse team will look to bounce back when they hit the road to face the Morrisville Mustangs. The Lakers are 1-1 on the season. Sophomore Kyle Bacon leads the team offensively with 6 points, while fellow attackman Bobby Emerson is off to a good start as well, posting 4 goals in two games. Freshman goalie Kevin O’Donnell has recorded 32 saves on 54 shots on goal in two games – including a 21 save performance against Ithaca – the most by any Laker goalie in the past five seasons.
Morrisville has struggled early on this year going 0-3 with losses against Geneseo and Oneonta, two teams Oswego will meet later when SUNYAC play picks up.
The game is scheduled for a noon start on Saturday.

Oswego women’s soccer making national noise
The Oswego State women’s soccer team made some noise on a national level this weekend. The Lakers knocked off the number 8 team in the nation, their conference rival Geneseo 1-0. Audrey Burbidge found teammate Sarah Grupp who hammered home the games lone goal. Freshman goaltender Emma Allen did her part with a 10 save shutout. The loss marked the Knights first on the season. Oswego State improved to 7-5-1 overall and 4-4 in the SUNYAC. The Lakers will look to build on their monumental win Saturday as they take on Cortland.
