Blake Leads Lakers to Tie vs. Plattsburgh
The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team tied Plattsburgh 2-2 on Saturday. With the tie, the Lakers are now 8-11-2 overall and 4-7-1 in conference play while the Cardinals move to 17-2-2 on the season and 11-0-1 in the NEWHL. The game also marks the first time Oswego has not lost to Plattsburgh at home.
After allowing five goals in the first period Friday night, the Lakers defense held Plattsburgh to a single shot for the first ten minutes of the contest. During that time, Olivia Ellis scored her team leading seventh goal of the season to give Oswego an early lead. The Cardinals were able to fight their way back into the game with multiple power play opportunities due to the Lakers’ miscues. On the brink of defeat, Oswego’s Victoria Blake sent the puck sailing past the leg of Plattburgh’s goalie, Brooke Wolejko to tie the game up with just 17 seconds left.
The Lakers will head to Cortland on Friday as part of a home and home series. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 pm.

Oswego Indoor Waterpark Project

OSWEGO, NY— Oswego residents can prepare for a boost in tourism as construction begins for a new indoor waterpark.
After receiving $10 million for downtown revitalization, Oswego has numerous projects with a goal to make the town more active.
“It would definitely reel in a lot of people. I love indoor water parks and I’m sure a lot of other people do too. Since it’s indoors people can go any time of year. It’s not just the summertime, it’ll attract more people,” SUNY Oswego student Ana Sanchez said.
Sanchez said in a place that is known for its cold, snowy weather, the waterpark will give people in the town more options, especially in the winter.
“I would definitely go any time of the season, no matter what it is. Definitely Christmas time when it’s cold, the snow is up here, the wind. I would definitely like to be in an indoor waterpark,” said Sanchez.
The waterpark could be a great addition to the town of Oswego, and especially for the waterbugs who still enjoy a good swim in the freezing Oswego winters.
Residents should prepare their bathing suits and water shoes for the opening, which should be determined soon.
Other projects from the money awarded from the downtown revitalization fund are the riverwalk, and the renovation of the Children’s Museum of Oswego (CMOO).

Democratic Debate Gives First Look at Candidates
Last night marked the first of many Democratic Presidential Debates in which Hillary Clinton surprised many with her professional and poised approach. Along with candidates Bernie Sanders, Martin O’Malley, Jim Webb, and Lincoln Chafee.
Clinton has been listed as the frontrunner for the Democratic side of the Presidential Race for some time now, but candidate Bernie Sanders’ recent uprising in the polls has given her campaign some fits.
Many were excited and curious to see how Sanders would be in the debate, and he stayed true to himself, being the ultra-progressive, almost revolutionary candidate that many Democratic voters have fallen in love with.
The major piece to take from this debate is the overall sense of unity of the candidates that was not seen in the Republican Debate. For the most part, all five candidates agreed on the same set of principles including higher taxes on the wealthy and stricter gun regulations. Where they did differ is on their plans on how to achieve their goals.
Overall, Clinton seemed to show off her confidence as being the frontrunner, whereas Bernie Sanders stuck with his radical approach that may have won him a couple voters. While we do not know for sure who will emerge from the Democratic Party for President, what we can be sure of is that it will be an election for the ages.
