OSWEGO, NY— Earlier this week, students had the opportunity of meeting and speaking with Zully Ramirez. She is currently an investigative news reporter at Chicago Telemundo. The event was hosted by the PRSSA here at SUNY Oswego and was open to the general public.
Zully Ramirez originally hails from Guatemala, but she moved to Harlem, NY at a young age. Many students were intrigued by her success story and her honesty about being an investigative news reporter.
After the event, I had the opportunity of interviewing Zully Ramirez and asked her what she would tell present and future students of SUNY Oswego. Her response was, “I would just say persevere. Persevere, listen to advice and put your heart and soul into everything that you do. Because when you persevere and listen to advice, and put your heart and soul into everything that you do, you can make it.”

Oswego Farmer’s Market season extended

OSWEGO, NY– The Oswego Farmer’s Market held every Thursday on West First Street was supposed to close for the season by October 5th. This year the market will extend their season an extra two weeks.
The Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of Commerce, the non-profit organization in charge of the farmers market, cooperated with the city of Oswego to extend their season a few more weeks.
Oswego Farmer’s Market Manager Gene Schoonmakerfranczek said that the extension is the result of apple season. “This is the middle of apple country. And we are still in the middle of apple season. It is not so fair for the farmers to quit that early.”
GMB Beckens Farm Owner Sherri Bauer said she found out when she arrived at the market and is is very excited about the extension.The last day of the Oswego Farmer’s Market will be Thursday, October 19, until next Spring. Farmers from the market will continue to travel to Syracuse where a farmers market will be held until Thanksgiving day.

Oswego successfully hosts 46th annual NAPA Super DIRT Week

OSWEGO, N.Y.– The Oswego Speedway was packed with fans two weekends ago as the cars lapped around the track at what is also known as Racing’s Biggest Party. NAPA Super DIRT Week is a yearly race in which the speedway brings in more than 9,600 cubic yards of clay to convert the asphalt track to dirt for the Super DIRTcar Series.
The track has been hosting the annual racing event for the past two years instead of its original location at the Central New York Raceway Park in Hastings after construction stalled.
Now that the dust has settled, Oswego residents and city officials said they hope it will return – this time for good. Mayor Billy Barlow said in an interview with WRVO that Super DIRT Week has brought in roughly 70,000 fans, and has been a great way to bring tourism to the city.
“To get them in town and see all that we have, see that we’re a waterfront community with Lake Ontario and the Oswego River, some of the other assets we have here – I think – is a beneficial thing and perhaps encourages them to visit again, even if it’s not racing related,” Barlow said.
Super DIRT Week in Oswego has earned a great reaction from all sides. Super DIRT Week fan Bobby Sweeney said he thinks the location of this year’s race was really cool because the “small town” overlooks “a big lake like Lake Ontario.” Sweeney said that the racing has been awesome this past year and that he would love to see it stay in Oswego.

Students invited to test their knowledge on War of 1812
For the 4th consecutive year, students at SUNY Oswego will get the chance to test their knowledge about one of the country’s most significant events of the 19th Century.
The 4th annual Oswego War of 1812 Symposium will be held from Friday, April 4th to Sunday, April 6th. The symposium will be held at the Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center, located at 26 East First Street, in Oswego.
All SUNY Oswego students are encouraged to participate in the War of 1812 research paper competition. Paper topics may pertain to any part of the War of 1812. No specific length is required, although they must be able to be presented on for at least 10 minutes.
The Symposium won’t just be limited to research paper presentations, however. A total of twelve historian speakers will give their insight on the War of 1812. Some include historian and author, Dianne Graves, archaeologist and professor, Timothy Abel, as well as the Superintendent of Fort Ontario State Historic Site, Paul Lear.
Those who wish to present their submitted research papers can do so on Friday, April 4th. Students presenting at the symposium will also have a chance to win $150. Papers must be submitted by March 24.
