
OSWEGO — The volleyball team played host to the defending SUNYAC champion New Paltz last night. The Lakers came right out of the gate, winning the opening set 25-16. They would drop the following three in a 3-1 loss to the visiting Hawks. Melissa Lussier, Junior, led the team with 14 kills along with 2 aces through the contest. The group looks to bounce back today versus Oneonta at 1 p.m. in the Max Ziel Gymnasium.

Oswego baseball: SUNYAC playoffs preview

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State baseball team cliched the one seed in the SUNYAC playoffs over the weekend. All the games in the tournament will be played at the Laker Baseball Stadium. The tournament features three top 25 teams, Oswego (12), Cortland (13), and Brockport (22). The tournament is a double elimination style tournament with a potential seven total games being played. The first two games of the tournament will be played on Thursday, the first game will feature Oswego taking on the Plattsburgh Cardinals at noon. The second game of the day will see Cortland taking on Brockport at 3:00 P.M.

The Lakers are currently on a 20 game win streak against the Cardinals dating back to March, 2015. This season they won all three games, game one 19-6, game two 8-2, and game three 17-5. In the three games, Kyle Lauria went 9-16 (.563), and drove in eight runs in the series. Ryan Enos had four doubles in the series. Tishawn Featherstone had two home runs in the first game. The Laker pitching staff held the dangerous Alex Kornblau to 2-10 (.200) over all three games.
The Lakers are led by four dangerous hitters at the top of their lineup, Paul Tamarro, Ryan Enos, Kyle Lauria, and Lukas Olsson. Tammaro (64) and Enos (60) are one and two in the SUNYAC hits leaders. They also sit atop the batting average leader board hitting .481 and .476 respectively. Enos also sits second in the SUNYAC in doubles with 16, with Tammaro right behind at 14. Enos and Olsson are in a three way tie for fourth in the conference home runs leaders with eight each. Enos and Lauria tied for second in stolen bases at 24 each, with Tammaro in fourth with 23. Plattsburgh is led by a dangerous hitter of their own, Alex Kornblau. He is fourth in the SUNYAC in batting average (.396), fifth in doubles (11), and ninth in RBIs (33).
In the game, expect the Lakers to put Kyle Finnegan or Anthony Van Fossen on the mound. Finnegan has been the Lakers ace, with a 2.36 era in 61 innings pitched, striking out 54 batters. He pitched a majority of the seven inning games of the doubles headers, doing a complete game four of his ten starts. For the Cardinals, you may see Sean Malamud or Peter Gregory. Malamud has the most innings on the Plattsburgh staff, 56, and the lowest ERA, 4.98.
After Thursday, the loser of the Oswego-Plattsburgh game will play the loser of the Cortland-Brockport game in game one Friday. The winners of the two Thursday matchups will face off in game two Friday. The third and final game on Friday will be the winner of Friday’s first game vs the loser of Friday’s second game. Saturday will the championship matchup. It will feature the winner of Friday’s second game taking on the winner of Friday’s third game, with a potential second game being played if the team who hasn’t lost yet, the winner of Friday’s second game, loses.

Men’s Hockey Releases Leadership for 2020-21 Season
OSWEGO, NY — On Thursday, May 14th, the Men’s Hockey team released their captains for the 2020-21 season. Three seniors were given letters to be the leadership group for next season. Defenseman Carter Allen will captain the group heading into the next season, along with Max Novick and Tanner Spink received A’s on their jerseys. The group will lead a new younger generation of Lakers into next season as a large group of underclassmen will join the team via recruitment. Here is some more insight into the players leading the Lakers.
Carter Allen was an assistant captain last season under former captain Josh Zizek. The defenseman has been with the team since his freshman year. Through three seasons, the Ontario native has played in 81 games for the Lakers, in which all his seasons featured being positive in the plus/minus rating. Allen has 22 points (4 goals & 18 assists) in those three seasons, with 9 points coming this past season. #2 tallied two multi point games his junior year with two assists against Morrisville State and Cortland. Allen also got one assist in the SUNYAC finals against Geneseo. Allen will become the captain in the 56th season of Lakers hockey.
Max Novick will be supporting Allen as an assistant captain next season. The defenseman was named to the Third All-American team for the East region this past season after tallying 24 points (6 goals & 18 assists) in 26 games played. The Ontario native’s season was highlighted by two three point performances against Cortland and Potsdam. Novick has played in 79 games over the course of three season for the Lakers in which the player has recorded a total of 56 points (14 goals & 42 assists). Novick’s collegiate career is also highlighted by three plus seasons after going +20 his junior year.
Tanner Spink will also be an assistant captain his senior year as the forward will join the leadership group next season. This past season, Spink recorded 13 points (3 goals and 10 assists) in 25 games played. The Ontario native ranked 2nd in SUNYAC conference players who have scored short handed goals as Spink recorded two this past season. In his past three seasons with the Lakers, the forward has played in 74 games and has tallied 41 points (14 goals and 27 assists) over the course of his career.
WTOP 10 will continue to give Oswego fan’s coverage of all Oswego sports into the summer before the return of fall sports. Schedules for most Laker teams will be released in the next two months.

Matthews leads Lakers to 10th place finish

OSWEGO — The Oswego State Men’s Wrestling team competed to a tenth place finish in the Ithaca College Invitational last weekend. The highlight of the tournament for the Lakers came from Issac Matthews who battled to a fourth-place individual finish. Matthews was pinned in his first match but went on to dominate the consolation bracket all the way to the third-place match, where he lost a close matchup by a score of 6-5. The Lakers have some time to prepare for their next tournament as they travel to Cornell on Nov. 18.
