OSWEGO — The Men’s Soccer team ties nationally ranked Cortland after a highly competitive match up at Laker Stadium yesterday. After double OT, the teams finished the contest 1-1 with both groups starting off their SUNYAC conference play 2-0-1. After a scoreless first half, Steven Rojas, Freshman, scores off a shot from Caleb Asamoah. The Red Dragons would equalize later in the half, the first goal that got past keeper Brian Terra since Ithaca on Sept. 17. The group looks to keep their successful SUNYAC streak going with another home game against Oneonta this Friday. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.

Oswego State women’s hockey shuts out SUNY Canton in consecutive games
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team defeated SUNY Canton in back-to-back games last weekend, winning 5-0 on Friday and 4-0 on Saturday. With these pair of victories, the Lakers improve to 11-7-1 on the season and 8-4-1 in NEWHL play.
Saturday’s game was on the road where the Lakers took command early on. After putting up seven shots-on-goal to start the game, freshman Lizzie Burke got Oswego on the board at the 8:29 mark of the opening stanza. Just six minutes later, the Canton received a powerplay opportunity following a Laker tripping penalty. However, Oswego scored a short-handed goal with 28 seconds left in the first period. Captain Philomena Teggart and junior Ariella Haas assisted Simone Bednarik on the score. Early on into the second period, Morgan Shines put the Lakers up 3-0 off an assist by Kyleigh Grugin and Avery Webster. Oswego continued their dominant offensive performance as they found the net once again just 46 seconds later, this time being a goal from Taylor Hudon. After some back-and-forth runs by each team in the final period, the Lakers scored their fifth and final goal of the night courtesy of Ashlyn McGrath. Oswego out-shot Canton 33-14 in Saturday’s contest with sophomore goalkeeper Joanna Hiebert going perfect on the night, saving all 14 Kangaroo shots.
The Lakers and Kangaroos met once again just one day later, this time being in the Deborah F. Stanley arena. Much like their previous matchup, Oswego started Sunday’s game off hot from the opening puck-drop. Junior Emily Gustafson netted her first goal of the season just 5:50 into the first period to put the Lakers up by one. Towards the end of the first frame, freshman Mack Hull made it a 2-0 game when she found the back of the net. Both teams went scoreless throughout much of the second period until Sophia Kyrkostas netted a powerplay goal with three minutes remaining. Midway through the final stanza, Lizzie Burke added an insurance goal to give the Lakers a 4-0 lead. Oswego improved in the shots column from the first matchup, this time outshooting the ‘Roos 45-18. Joanna Hiebert was outstanding in goal once again, racking up 18 saves and recording her fourth shutout of the season.
After an impressive weekend which saw junior Morgan Shines win the Oswego State athlete of the week honor, the women’s hockey team is now tied for 2nd place in the NEWHL with SUNY Cortland. Oswego will look to carry this momentum into Tuesday’s match against Buffalo State before competing in a rubber-match verses SUNY Canton on Friday. Puck-drop is set for 7:00 p.m. at Buffalo State on Tuesday.

#25 Oswego State men’s basketball team extends win streak to 11
OSWEGO, N.Y. — On Tuesday, the #25 Oswego State men’s basketball team defeated SUNY Geneseo 88-63, extending their win streak to 11. This victory not only marked the Lakers’ fifth win of the new year, but also the first Geneseo SUNYAC loss.
Through the first four minutes of play, both teams came out firing, with the Knights leading 7-6. Shortly after, Oswego found themselves on a 9-0 run lead by junior Jamal Achille who scored six points. After the Knights went on a scoring run of their own, Oswego was able to capitalize on a 13-4 run which put the Lakers up 38-22 at the half. The Lakers were able to hold the Knights to 25% from the field in the first half, their lowest shooting percentage in any half this season.
Both teams came into the second half scorching hot. In the first 10 minutes, Geneseo were perfect beyond the arch as they went 5-for-5 from three. However, the Lakers were able to keep pace with Geneseo’s scoring onslaught, answering every three with one of their own, going 7-for-9 from deep. Geneseo brought the deficit to eight, but Brendan Mulson hit a three to put the Lakers up by double-digits once again. Over the final six minutes of regulation, the Lakers continued their great shooting performance, hitting four more shots from deep as their lead grew to over twenty.
Oswego finished the night with 13 three-pointers while shooting a whopping 51.6% from the field. Senior Julien Crittendon lead the Lakers in scoring with 18 points while Devin Green totaled 16 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Brendan Mulson (11) and Ahkee Anderson (10) also scored double-digit points in the contest.
With this win, the Lakers are now in sole possession of the top seed in the SUNYAC conference. Oswego is also the #25 ranked team in the nation and with a win on Saturday against SUNY Cortland, they will almost certainly rise in the standings. Tip off is set for 4:00 p.m. at Cortland. Oswego mens soccer loses in a tough defensive game
OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s team hosted undefeated Elmira college from the empire 8 conference on Tuesday night. This game was a highly defensive affair as both teams only had 6 shots on goal in the first 20 minutes of the game. A poor throw in by Oswego led to a free kick in the 21st minute as Gavin Wise of Elmira pressured a lakers defender trying to receive the throw. A lakers player then tried to redirect the ball to his teammate but Lutho Mlunguza of Elmira intercepted it and quickly got the ball to Wise up the field. As Wise tried to settle the pass, Ryan Contreras of the lakers stepped across and sent Wise to the ground. The referee would then give Elmira a free kick that Mlunguza would kick into the top left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. The Lakers would push hard the rest of the game to fight back as they out shot Elmira College 13 to 4 in the second half. The Lakers had their best shot with just 25 seconds left in the game when Oswego’s Ha Joon Lee blasted a shot from around 20 yards out that forced Elmira goalie Zachary Raffino into a full length dive to his right. The ball fell inside of the box with Laker Kyle Gehnrich given a chance to tie but was stopped with a great save by Raffino. Raffino would end the game with 5 saves as the Lakers fell 1-0.
The Lakers are now 2-3 this season. Their next game will be when they host Fredonia September 17th at 1:00 as their SUNYAC opener.
