OSWEGO — The Men’s Soccer team ties nationally ranked Cortland after a highly competitive match up at Laker Stadium yesterday. After double OT, the teams finished the contest 1-1 with both groups starting off their SUNYAC conference play 2-0-1. After a scoreless first half, Steven Rojas, Freshman, scores off a shot from Caleb Asamoah. The Red Dragons would equalize later in the half, the first goal that got past keeper Brian Terra since Ithaca on Sept. 17. The group looks to keep their successful SUNYAC streak going with another home game against Oneonta this Friday. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.

Oswego State Softball Team Splits in Doubleheader Versus New Paltz
OSWEGO, N.Y — The Oswego State Softball team went 1-1 against the New Paltz Hawks on Tuesday, dropping the first game 9-3 before winning the second 6-2. With the win in the second game, the Lakers cut their win streak and gain momentum heading into the next conference doubleheader.
The first game started slow as neither team scored until infielder, Julia Mastrup, scored in the 5th inning and put the Hawks up 1-0. New Paltz then followed that with a 6-run 6th inning and put the games out of reach for Oswego. Three players scored for Oswego, including Madelana Wrubel, Leah Czerwinski, and Jessica DuPoint. The Lakers, desperate for a win, did not disappoint in the second game however.
Oswego kicked off the rematch with a 2nd inning home run by senior utility player, Taylor DuBois. The game was stagnant for the next three innings until Kelly Marmor tied the game with a home run in the 6th inning. Though, that would be as close as the game got. The Lakers exploded in their 6th inning at-bat, scoring 5 runs and capitalizing on poor pitching. New Paltz’s Katie Quagli would score off a Rhionna Bian RBI in the final inning, but it would be too little, to late. Five Lakers scored runs with Taylor DuBois totaling 2 runs off of 2 hits and 3 RBIs. Oswego also got great play out of their pitching core of Madison Hoeflich and Fiona Higgins who had 14 combined strikeouts on the day.
With the end of the season quickly approaching, Oswego will have to have play nearly perfect in their final few games in order to have a chance at the postseason. The Lakers will have the opportunity to improve in conference play as they take on the Brockport Golden Eagles in a doubleheader on May 1st. Game 1 is set to start at 12:00 p.m. while game 2 has a 2:00 p.m. start time in Brockport.

Oswego High School Girls Bucaneers Hockey: Julia Roman commits to WNE
OSWEGO, NY — Wednesday Morning, June 3rd, the Western New England Women’s Hockey team announced the commitment of Oswego Buccaneer Julia Roman. The Oswego native attended Oswego High School and played on the Oswego High School Girls Hockey team along with the school’s soccer team. The Senior was named Captain this season for the Bucs and led the group to a 9-8 overall record and finished fourth in the season standings. The team would fall to the Section III Champions, the Clinton Warriors, in the semifinals of Sectionals. Roman, a right handed shot, would tally 7 points (2 goals & 5 assists) over the course of her senior season and led defenseman in points along side freshman Mia Fierro. The defenseman recorded 17 points over the past three seasons in a Buccaneers uniform.
Western New England University is located just outside Springfield, Massachusetts, and is a part of the Commonwealth Coast Conference, who will now recognize Women’s Hockey with a conference championship. The Golden Bear announced last June that the college would start a Women’s Hockey team at the start of the 2020-21 season. The Division III program would join the new conference along with Suffolk University. A majority of this conference is made up of members of the CHC, the Colonial Hockey Conference. The CHC will has recently disbanded after the creation of the newer conference. This conference winner will get an automatic bid to the Division III Women’s Hockey Championship. The Oswego State Lakers have yet to play a CHC opponent in program history, so the return of Julia Roman to Oswego to play against the green and gold is unlikely. Marano Campus Center Ice Rink Melts
OSWEGO, NY — As playoffs are upon us at SUNY Oswego for both the Men’s and Women’s Hockey teams, this week has been a challenge for both along with other groups that call the Marano Campus Center Ice Rink their home. Tuesday Evening, reports from individuals that cover both teams like Ben Grieco, from the Oswegonian, tweeted about the ice chilling system failing at the ice rink. The compressor in the system broke, resulting in the ice surface beginning to melt. Wednesday morning, the ice crew began removing the ice due to the ice melting. Currently, all that lies in the rink is the concrete bottom as we wait for updates on the situation. This problem has many implications, as teams are starting to prepare for this weekend’s playoff games.
Women’s Hockey is set to host Morrisville on Saturday for the first round of the NEWHL playoffs. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m. as the two seed is looking to secure a win, a most likely move on to play Plattsburgh in the finals. Men’s Hockey is supposed to host the highest remaining seed as quarter final games are being played on Wednesday. This game is set to play at 7 p.m. from the Marano Campus Center. Due to the current standing of the rink, these games may get moved to a new location so that games can be played at the correct times. Although all of this is not confirmed yet, Oswego Athletics has begun looking at possible options for these games, most likely being a place in Syracuse that has the capacity for two college games.
Even though both of these teams are affected the most from this problem, other teams are feeling the results. The D1 ACHA Hockey team has had to move practices to a new location as the team is preparing for their playoffs this weekend in Buffalo. The Women’s Club team has also had to cancel practice for this week.
