Oswego State softball wraps up 2022 season

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State softball team finished their 2022 regular season this past weekend with 2 conference doubleheaders as SUNY Brockport and SUNY Geneseo traveled to SUNY Oswego’s campus. The Lakers were unable to find the win column this weekend and finished the campaign with an overall record of 9-26 and 4-14 in SUNYAC play. Oswego State was eliminated from post season contention as the Lakers finished 9th in the conference standings, just above SUNY Potsdam.

On Friday, the Golden Eagles of SUNY Brockport traveled into Oswego, New York to take on the Lakers in a doubleheader. Game 1 finished with a 9-4 score in favor of SUNY Brockport after the Golden Eagles score first in the top of the 3rd. Oswego State would answer with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning but the Golden Eagles ran away with the contest the rest of the way. In Game 2, Oswego State struck first in the bottom of the opening inning with 1 run. The teams would trade runs in the 2nd inning before the Lakers took a commanding lead in the 4th inning. The Golden Eagles would have a monster 5th inning with 6 runs scored to take the lead and the group never looked back from there.

The following day, the Lakers would honor their seniors in a doubleheader against the top team in the SUNYAC, the Knights from SUNY Geneseo. The Lakers were swept by the Knights as SUNY Geneseo won a close Game 1 by a score of 8-7. Oswego State would take a commanding 7-1 lead early in the contest before SUNY Geneseo reeled back in the Lakers. The contest would go to extra innings as the Knights found the winning run in the top of the 9th inning.

It would be another 1 run game in the second stretch of the doubleheader. Oswego State unfortunately were on the wrong of the score line as the Knights came away with a 6-5 win in the final game of the regular season. SUNY Geneseo would snag 4 runs over the course of a few innings to take an early lead. Oswego State would tally 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to tie the game. In the final inning, SUNY Geneseo would score 2 more runs while the Lakers could only manage to find 1 run and would fall in their last contest of the 2022 campaign.

Laker Zoe Mennig would lead the Oswego State squad at the plate for the 2nd season in a row. The senior catcher finished with a .442 batting average and 42 hits over the course of 95 at bats. Fionna Higgins followed up Mennig with a .300 batting average. Higgins was also the top pitcher in the bullpen this season with the lowest ERA which was 4.72 at the end of the season. The junior finished with a 6-8 record at the end of the season. The Oswego State softball team will return next season in the spring for the 2023 season.

Oswego State women’s lacrosse takes setback against SUNY Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team headed on the road Wednesday to take on the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles in a SUNYAC matchup. The Lakers would fall 15-5 to the Golden Eagles to drop to 4-4 in the conference. With the win, SUNY Brockport clinches a berth to the post season with a SUNYAC record of 6-2 over the course of the 2022 campaign. Oswego State is now 5-10 in the 2022 season overall.

SUNY Brockport started off the contest with four straight goals before the Lakers found the back of the net in the 2nd quarter. Oswego State was held off the scoresheet in the 1st stanza but Sela WIley added to her season goal total and put the Lakers on the board. Madison Davis would snag the assist on the shot and the Lakers place ketchup against the Golden Eagles. However, SUNY Brockport would put 6 more goals in before the Lakers found twine once again. Wiley netted her second in the 3rd quarter to try and narrow the margin. The captain would complete the hattrick at the end of the quarter as Julia Quirk got credit for the assist. Quirk would add another goal in the final stanza and Shae McConnell put one in with 7 minutes remaining in regulation for her 29 goal of the season. Netminder Sarah Kamide made 7 saves over the course of the game and allowed 16 goals. The Lakers were out shot 32 to 19 in the contest.

Oswego State now turns their attention to Plattsburgh State this Saturday for Senior Day at Laker Turf Stadium. Oswego State sits in the final playoff spot in the SUNYAC playoffs and Plattsburgh State trails them with a conference record of 3-5. For the Lakers, it is simple, win and you are in. The Cardinals will look to steal a win on the road to force a tiebreaker at the end of the regular season. The final game of the regular season can be seen live on WTOP 10 as the Lakers face off against the Cardinals at 12:00 p.m. this Saturday on the banks of Lake Ontario.

Oswego State men’s lacrosse drops conference game to SUNY Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s lacrosse team fell to SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons this past Saturday by a score of 12-6. The Lakers drop to 3-2 in the SUNYAC conference

as the group looks ahead to their final two games of the 2022 regular season. Oswego State was held to only 1 goal during the second half while the Red Dragons pulled ahead to steal a game in the playoff race. Gavin Elston scored three goals over the course of the contest and netminder Aiden Kenyon made 20 saves with a .625 save percentage.

The Red Dragons improve to 2-3 in the conference. Oswego State still can control their destiny with 2 games remaining against SUNY Cortland and SUNY Brockport before the start of conference playoffs. The Lakers currently hold the final spot in the post season as the team prepares for a contest against the Red Dragons from SUNY Cortland this Wednesday at Laker Turf Stadium. Oswego State men’s lacrosse battles with SUNY Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s lacrosse team traveled down Interstate 90 to the SUNY Geneseo’s campus to take on the Knights in another SUNYAC matchup this past Friday night. The Lakers would fall 11-10 to the Knights of SUNY Geneseo after Oswego State could not complete the comeback late in regulation. The Lakers would fall to 3-1 in the SUNYAC and 8-3 overall as their lengthy win streak comes to an end.

Ryan Eccles would open the scoring with 10 minutes remaining in the first quarter. Eccles would 2 goals and 1 assists for 3 points over the course of the contest. Gavin Elston and Corey O’Connor would lead the team on offense with 4 points at the end of regulation. The Lakers would have the lead heading into the second half, but SUNY Geneseo was able to tie the game heading into the fourth and final quarter. Elston and Liam Sexton looked to lead the comeback in the final 5 minutes of the game but the Knights were able to hold the Lakers to only 10 goals. Aiden Kenyon would make 17 saves during the contest in between the pipes for Oswego State. His goals against average is now 8.88 goals against per game.

The Lakers fall to fourth in the conference with a record of 3-1. The team is tied with SUNY Brockport and has a good chance of heading back to the post season with only 3 games remaining before playoffs. Next Saturday, the Lakers will head to SUNY Oneonta to take on the Red Dragons. SUNY Oneonta is currently 1-3 in the conference with a 2-9 overall record. The Lakers will then host SUNY Cortland and SUNY Brockport to round out the season, two teams that sit above Oswego State in the SUNYAC season standings. Oswego State men’s hockey announces 2022-23 leadership group

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team announced on Sunday, April 10th the 2022-23 leadership group for the team. The Lakers will return for their 56th season in the fall and three current Lakers will be the core leadership to lead the squad into battle. Ryan Bunka will return using his extra year of eligibility due to COVID-19 to be the captain of the 2022-23 team. The defenseman from Unionville, Ontario, Canada has played three seasons for the Lakers and missed the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19 canceling the campaign. Bunka has 36 games played with 3 goals and 6 assists over the course of his career at Oswego State. The left handed defenseman only missed 2 games this past season and was an essential part of the defensive core on the second pairing. The Laker finished +16 in the plus/minus column at the end of the year, the best out of any Oswego State player.

In the assistant captain roles, defenseman Troy Robillard and forward Alex DiCarlo will get the A on the jersey for next season. DiCarlo has been with the program since his freshman year back in the 2019-20 season. The Ontario native started his freshman campaign as a healthy scratch before becoming a key part of the offensive core by the end of the season. During his sophomore season, DiCarlo returned from the COVID-19 break and continued his dominance in the SUNYAC conference. In 26 games played, the Laker tallied 14 goals and 12 assists for 26 points. The point per game player did not miss a game this season and set career high stats in both the goal and assist column.

The other assistant captain transferred to Oswego State from the NCAA Division I program out of Anchorage, Alaska. Robillard established himself as a key addition to the defensive team after playing 23 games this past season. The defenseman finished with 4 goals and 3 assists after his first season in green and gold. One of those goals was a game winner in the Teal Night game against SUNY Cortland back during the fall semester. The junior will return for his senior year at Oswego State.

The Lakers are looking ahead to the summer months and the key part of the season, the offseason. Oswego State has one game announced so far for the 2022-23 season that is publicly known. The Utica College Pioneers released on twitter the date of their Teddy Bear Toss game for next season. Oswego State will travel to Utica on December 3rd for a 7:00 p.m. puck drop. Oswego State softball swept by SUNY Cortland

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Lakers were defeated by the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons as the softball team could not out score the Red Dragons. Game 1 was a blow out in favor of the Red Dragons by the score of 13-1 and Game 2 was slightly closer with a score of 9-4. In Game 2, the Red Dragons were able to score six unanswered runs to come from behind and snag another SUNYAC win to improve to 4-1 in the conference. Zoe Mennig has 2 hits and 1 run in Game 2 and led the hitting squad in that contest. Fiona Higgins pitched both games for the Lakers and lead the pitching crew. Higgins had 4 strikeouts in Game 1 over the course of 3 innings.

For the Lakers, the team turns their attention to St. John Fisher College on Monday for a nonconference double header. The teams will battle at Laker Softball Field at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. Oswego State is 9-23 against the Cardinals thar represent the Empire 8 conference. The Lakers are looking to end a 7 game losing streak against the Rochester based team. WNYO will be live from the field tomorrow afternoon for the broadcast.

Oswego State softball battles in two doubleheaders

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State softball team has been busy at the start of the 2022 season. Most recently, the Lakers had four games over the course of two days. On Monday, the Lakers traveled down Interstate 90 to Western New York to take on the Blue Devils of SUNY Fredonia in a SUNYAC doubleheader. The Lakers would be swept by the Blue Devils as SUNY Fredonia defeated Oswego State by scores of 1-5 and 3-4. Game 2 featured a closer score line as the Lakers were close in getting over the hump. With one run in the 6th and 7th inning, Oswego State closed in on the Blue Devils but could not find a way to tie before the end of the contest. Fiona Higgins and Maria Lutz split time on the mound as Higgins pitched for a total of 4.1 innings. Zoe Minnig and Tia Smith both had 2 hits and 1 run over the course of the contest.

On Tuesday, the Lakers looked to bounce back in a nonconference doubleheader at Hamilton College. Oswego State would get back in the win column in game 2 as the Lakers took a 3-1 victory. The win came due to a big fourth inning which saw the Lakers snagging three runs. The Continentals got it done in game 1 in a high scoring 9-7 win for the home team.

Oswego State now sits at 5-12 overall on the season with a 1-3 conference record. The Lakers turn the ship towards SUNY Cortland as the Red Dragons will travel up Interstate 81 to take on the Lakers in another conference doubleheader. Oswego State was victorious last time these two teams met in the 2021 season. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. at Laker Softball Field as WNYO will be live with all the action.

Oswego State men’s lacrosse rolls through Plattsburgh State

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s lacrosse team traveled to North Country on Saturday to take on the Plattsburgh State Cardinals for a SUNYAC conference match up. Oswego State defeated the Cardinals by a score of 19-7 and improves to an overall record of 6-2 in the 2022 season. The Lakers are also 1-0 in conference play and are on the five game winning streak heading into another conference game on Tuesday.

Oswego State opened up the scoring in the first quarter which ended with a 6-0 lead for the Lakers. The Cardinals would tally three in the second quarter but Oswego State answered with another five goals. Ryan Eccles lead the offense with four goals and attacked Weston Gray tallied three goals and one assist. In the faceoff circle, Logan Prescott went 16 for 25 against the Cardinals.

In-between the pipes, starter Aiden Kenyon and back up Jeff Kinyoun combined for 7 goals against and 12 saves. Kenyon would pick up the win after playing over 50 minutes in net and Kinyoun taking over to finish up the contest. The tandem from Plattsburgh combined for 19 goals against and 14 total saves.

Oswego State turns their attention to SUNY Potsdam Tuesday afternoon at Laker Turf Stadium. The Lakers are on a four game win streak against the Bears and have an overall record of 26-15-0 against the SUNY Potsdam program. These two teams played back on April 10th, 2019 at SUNY Potsdam and the Lakers took the win 11-9. The game is set to start at 4:00 p.m. on SUNY Oswego’s campus as the Lakers look to stay undefeated in conference play so far this season.

Oswego State women’s lacrosse takes on Utica College

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team will host their first home game of the 2022 season today at Laker Turf Stadium. Nonconference opponent Utica College will travel down Interstate 90 to take on Oswego State for the first time since the 2019 season.

The Lakers start off their season 0-2 after dropping nonconference contests to nationally ranked Williams Smith and Clarkson University. The offense is once again led by veteran Sela Wiley who has four goals and one assist. The captain leads the team in points heading into the third game of the season. Newcomer Madison Davis has three goals in two games played for Oswego State after starting the season red hot and earning SUNYAC Offensive Player of the Week honors. In between the pipes, freshman Sarah Kamide has played every minute for the Lakers. The netminder has given up 29 goals and averages 14.50 per game. With 26 total saves through two games played, the Laker post a save percentage of .473. Currently, the Lakers are getting outscored 12 to 29 against opponents this season. Oswego State has also averaged less shots per game compared to their opponents with a stat line of 17.5 per contest.

On the other side of the field, the Utica College Pioneers kick off their 2022 season with this contest against Oswego State. Last year, the Pioneers were 9-6 and 4-2 in Empire 8 conference play. The team finished their season in the final round of the playoffs, losing to Nazareth College 8-9.

In terms of the history between these two programs, Utica College won the last matchup between the two teams back in March of 2019. The 11-7 win came at home for the Pioneers against the Lakers. However, the Oswego State squad holds the history in their hands with a record of 5-4-0 against Utica College and looks to gain their sixth win this afternoon.

Oswego State men’s hockey hosts semifinals of SUNYAC Championship

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The SUNYAC Championship for men’s hockey kicked off this past Saturday with two quarterfinal games, one in Cortland and the other up in North Country. Oswego State received a bye to semifinals round due to their performance in the regular season. The Lakers are the two seed in the bracket this season and after Saturday’s results, Oswego State will host SUNY Cortland to decide who will fight for the conference championship.

2021-22 Season Recap:

At the end of the regular season, the Lakers finished with an overall record of 17-6-1 and a SUNYAC conference record of 12-3-1 which was good for second in the conference standings. While in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena, Oswego State is 8-3-0 on home ice. The group started off 0-2 after two losses opening weekend against two nationally ranked nonconference opponents, Hobart College and Elmira College. The Lakers would go one a streak after that contest only dropping games against nationally ranked opponents like SUNY Geneseo and Augsburg University.

The team’s offense has been through senior captain Travis Broughman who was recently named to All-SUNYAC First Team due to his performance in the regular season. The Laker forward finished with thirteen goals and sixteen assists totaling to twenty nine points in only twenty four regular season games. Alex DiCarlo finished right behind his captain as was the only other Oswego State player that was above a point per game. The junior finished with thirteen goals and twelve assists for twenty five points.

Newcomers Connor Sleeth, Tyler Flack, and Tommy Cahill have been bright spots in the lineup after breaking out their first season in the green and gold uniform. The three combined for a total of forty eight points this season. Shane Bull also totaled twelve points in his first season in NCAA Division III men’s hockey.

On the defensive side of the puck, senior netminder Steven Kozikoski was named to the All-SUNYAC Second Team due to his performances in the regular season while in between the pipes for Oswego State. The Liverpool native logged over one thousand minutes of ice time and posted statistics like a 2.00 goals against average and a .926 save percentage. Backup goaltender Eric Green played in eight contests for the Lakers and finished with a 2.15 goals against average and a .889 save percentage.

SUNYAC Playoffs Preview:

Wednesday evening, SUNY Brockport will travel to SUNY Geneseo to face off against the number one seed and nationally ranked Ice Knights in a semifinal contest. Brockport defeated Plattsburgh State in overtime by a score line of 6-5. If Geneseo can get the job against the Golden Eagles, the Geneseo Ice Knights will host the Championship game once again in the IRA.

In terms of Oswego State hockey, the Lakers take on the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons for the 96th time in program history. This season, Oswego State defeated Cortland both times in the regular season, securing six points against the Red Dragons. Oswego State holds the history in their favor with a record against SUNY Cortland of 82-11-2 all time. Their first contest dates back to the 1976-77 season when Oswego State defeated SUNY Cortland by a score of 6-2 on home ice.

The matchup in the Marano Campus Center should feature an offensive team against some solid goaltending out of SUNY Cortland. The Lakers score on average 3.5 times per game while opponents can only net an average of 2.1 against Oswego State. In terms of Cortland, the Red Dragons score an average of 3.3 goals per game.

Oswego State men’s hockey splits weekend in Buffalo

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team went on the road this past weekend to finish the regular season. The Lakers finish the 2021-22 season with an overall record of 17-6-1 and a conference record of 12-3-1. Oswego State fell to SUNY Fredonia Friday night with a final score of 4-5 but bounced back on Saturday with a shutout victory against Buffalo State. The 3-0 win secured second place in the SUNYAC standings and gives the group a home playoff game in the semifinals round.

On Friday, Oswego State traveled past Buffalo down Interstate 90 to faceoff against the Blue Devils of SUNY Fredonia. The Fredonia squad was red hot coming into the matchup after beating the number one team in the conference, SUNY Geneseo, in a middle of the week contest. The Blue Devils would get the first two before forward Tommy Cahill got the first Oswego State goal on the powerplay in the second period. He would have another in the final stanza of the game to continue his points streak. Jackson Arcan would snag an even strength goal in the beginning of the third period to get the Lakers closer to the Blue Devils. Oswego State would score two in the final three minutes but were unable to find the tying goal before time expired. Steven Kozikowski would get pulled and Eric Green would finish the game between the pipes for the Lakers.

The following evening, Green would get the start in net for Oswego State. The team would shutout the Bengals on their alumni night. The 3-0 victory would feature goals from forwards Travis Broughman, Alex DiCarlo, and Rocco Andreacchi. The Lakerds scored two powerplay goals in the final minute to put the game away. The Bengals were able to keep the game at 1-0 for most of the contest thanks to netminding and solid defense.

Oswego State men’s hockey will take a week off prior to their Wednesday night contest against the highest remaining seed after the quarter-finals. The Lakers will host a semifinal game on Wednesday, March 2nd on home ice in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. The quarterfinal round of the SUNYAC playoffs will be played this Saturday. WTOP 10 will have coverage thirty minutes prior to puck drop next Wednesday as the Lakers chase another conference championship. Oswego State women’s hockey completes season sweep against SUNY Canton

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team defeated the SUNY Canton Kangaroos 3-1 tonight in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. The Lakers got their thirteenth win and extend their win streak to five games on Senior Night where Oswego State honored Chyne Kennedy, alternate captain Aislinn McAleer, and captain Philomena Teggart.

Heading into the second period, the Lakers and Kangaroos were tied at 1-1. The teams would trade shots in the second stanza but the score would remain the same heading into the final period of regulation. Early in the third period, Morgan Shines set up line mate Kyliegh Grugin for the game winning goal. Grugin got her seventh goal of the season and Shines snags another assist to push her point total to fifteen on the campaign. Ariella Haas got her fifth goal of the season to seal the deal for the Lakers. Haas continues to lead the team in points after transferring from Elmira College.

With tonight’s NEWHL conference win, the Oswego State women’s hockey team clinches a spot in the conference post season. Currently, the Lakers are tied with SUNY Cortland for second place in the conference standings with a total of 21 points. On Tuesday, the Lakers will play on the road against SUNY Potsdam with puck drop set for 7:00 p.m. up in Potsdam. The Bears are now in the fourth seed in the standings two points above the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton. Oswego State men’s hockey splits weekend

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team split this past weekend in SUNYAC conference play after competing against SUNY Brockport and SUNY Geneseo. The Lakers were able to get the job done on Friday with a win on home ice against the Brockport Golden Eagles. On Saturday, Oswego State traveled to Geneseo and fell after trying to complete the comeback in the third period.

Friday evening, Oswego State welcomed the Golden Eagles of SUNY Brockport into the Marano Campus Center for Senior Night and Pride Night. The Lakers would get the job done against Brockport posting a victory by a score of 7-3 in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. Oswego State got out to an early lead in the first period with a quick goal from forward Alex DiCarlo. The Golden Eagles would respond with their own two goals to take the lead. Tyler Flack would answer for the Lakers and tie the game with an assist going to sophomore Shane Bull. Goals from Mac Lewis and Tommy Cahill finished the scoring for the Lakers in the first period. The Golden Eagles would net one more before heading into the locker room to round out the first stanza.

Over the course of the next forty minutes, the Golden Eagles would not be able to find the back of the net after a solid performance from the Oswego State defense. Cahill and Flack found the back of the net one more time prior to the end of the contest and defenseman Troy Robillard also found the twine before the completion of the game. In between the pipes for Oswego State, netminder Steven Kozikoski received the win after making a total of 24 saves and only allowing three goals against.

On Saturday, Oswego State loaded up the bus and headed down Interstate 90 to SUNY Geneseo’s campus to play against the number two team in the nation per the USCHO poll. The Lakers would fall in the contest by a score of 4-2 but played a better game against the Ice Knights compared to the contest against Geneseo back in November. Geneseo would score four unanswered goals in the first and second periods to take a commanding lead on home ice. Rocco Andreacchi found the back of the net first for Oswego State and Cahill had another goal on the weekend in the third period. Kozikoski made a total of 34 saves in the lost.

Although the Lakers split the weekend against the Rochester teams, Oswego State moved up in this week’s USCHO poll. In terms of the Pairwise rankings, the Lakers are in tenth and have a good shot at an at-large bid if necessary. In the conference standings, the Lakers are tied with Geneseo for the top spot but Geneseo has a game at hand. Oswego State has three more games left in the regular season before the SUNYAC Championship starts. This Wednesday, Oswego State will travel to Morrisville State to take on the Mustangs for a weekday SUNYAC matchup. Morrisville is currently last in the conference with a total of six points. Oswego State women’s hockey back in win column

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team got back into the win column on Friday night with a 2-1 conference victory over the Morrisville State Mustangs on home ice. The Lakers got their sixth conference win after the game winning goal came in the third period on the powerplay. Oswego State scored first in the contest with a goal in the first period to take the lead. Lizzie Burke got the lone period goal with an assist from Morgan Shines. The Lakers and Mustangs would go scoreless in the second period to keep the game a one goal game heading into the final stanza. Just thirty-nine seconds into the third period, Morrisville State tied the game to make for an exciting finish. Simone Bednarik was able to capitalize on the man advantage after burying a goal after a pass from defenseman Chyne Kennedy. Oswego State was able to hold on for the victory and Joanna Hiebert got the win in between the pipes for the Lakers. The goaltender made fourteen saves over the course of the contest and only gave up one goal against.

That win puts Oswego State tied for third place in the NEWHL conference standings. The team has thirteen points along with SUNY Canton. Plattsburgh State and SUNY Cortland still sit above the Lakers while SUNY Potsdam, Morrisville State, and Buffalo State round out the conference. Oswego will now set their sights on SUNY Canton as the Lakers will face off against the Kangaroos the next three games. The series kicks off on Friday, February 4th, in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena as the contest is set for a 3:00 p.m. puck drop against the Kangaroos. On Saturday, Oswego State will head on the road to play in Canton with another 3:00 p.m. contest. A Look Ahead: Oswego State women’s hockey heads to Geneva

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team heads into this week after a disappointing trip to the North Country to take on conference rival Plattsburgh State. The Lakers fell in both games over the weekend and enter the week with an overall record of 8-6-1. In the NEWHL conference, Oswego State holds the third spot behind Plattsburgh State and SUNY Cortland with a total of 11 points. The conference record of 5-4-1 is only two points better than SUNY Canton who is in the last spot in the playoffs if the post season started right now.

The Lakers will have this coming weekend off but first will travel to Geneva, New York to face off against the Williams Smith Herons. Recently, the Lakers lost forward Megan Teachout to the transfer portal. Teachout was able to produce on the offensive side of the puck but Oswego State was able to fill the hole in their offense this past weekend. Oswego State has already played Williams Smith this season back in November prior to Thanksgiving Break. The Lakers took that game by a score line of 1-0 as Ariella Haas netted the lone goal which was assisted by Chyne Kennedy and Emily Gustafson. Netminder Joanna Hiebert got the win in between the pipes for the Lakers with a total of 15 saves and the shutout. Against the Herons, the Lakers are 4-2-1 all time against the program hailing from Geneva. Oswego State lost 1-3 last time the group traveled for a road game against the opponent.

Oswego State men’s hockey team rolls through Whiteout Weekend

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team got two big wins this weekend to complete Whiteout Weekend in the Marano Campus Center. Friday night, the Lakers got a 3-0 victory against the SUNY Potsdam Bears and then on Saturday Oswego State secured a 5-2 win against Plattsburgh State in the rivalry game. Oswego State was able to secure six points in the SUNYAC conference and tie themselves with Geneseo for first place.

On Friday, Oswego State got their third shutout of the season with another win over the SUNY Potsdam Bears. The Lakers struck first in the first period as captain Travis Broughman tallied another goal this season which was assisted by alternate captain Josh LeBlanc and Tristan Francis. Broughman’s sixth goal of the season was the lone goal of the period. In the second period, Oswego State kept the pressure on with two more goals. The second goal of the game came off the stick of Rocco Andreacchi as sophomore forwards Connor Sleeth and Tyler Flack both got credited with the assists. The final goal of the contest was shot by Alex DiCarlo on the rush. The assist would go to senior defenseman Ryan Bunka as the Lakers snagged another goal before the end of the second period. Netminder Steven Kozikoski would get the victory and shutout in between the pipes for the Lakers as the goaltender made a total of 35 saves.

In the rivalry game Saturday night, Oswego State took on the Plattsburgh State Cardinals in another conference match up. The final score of 5-2 featured a stellular first period from the Lakers as Oswego State netted two goals in the stanza. Flack scored early to put Oswego State up one to zero and Sleeth added another to his season total before the teams headed to the locker rooms. Plattsburgh State would have an answer in the second period but Oswego would respond with another two goals to push the score to four to one in favor of the home team. Tommy Cahill recorded his first point as an Oswego State Laker after passing the puck to Garret Clegg who tallied the third Oswego State goal. The Cardinals scored another in the third period but Oswego State answered with an insurance goal on the rush off the twig of AJ Ryan. Kozikoski got another win in the net for Oswego and the team finished the weekend on a four game win streak.

In the SUNYAC standings, Oswego State has tied Geneseo with 22 points for first place. After Cortland lost to SUNY Potsdam Saturday evening, Oswego was able to get a lead over Plattsburgh and the Red Dragons from Cortland. The Cardinals and Red Dragons are tied for third place with a total of 17 points. Brockport trails the four teams in fifth place with 15 total conference points. In the last post season spot, Fredonia has nine points and is looking to get into the mix with a win over Buffalo State this past weekend.

For the Oswego State Lakers, the group will head on the road Friday night to take on SUNY Cortland. The game is scheduled to start a 7:00 p.m. on SUNY Cortland’s campus. WTOP 10 will continue to deliver updates on the Oswego State men’s hockey team and their 2021-22 season.

A Look Ahead: Whiteout Weekend

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The most important weekend of the year to most SUNY Oswego and community members comes around as the Oswego State men’s hockey team hosts Potsdam and Plattsburgh State for Whiteout Weekend. The Lakers host the 2022 edition of the rivalry weekend as fans are expected to pack the Deborah F. Stanley Arena this weekend. Oswego State played both teams on the road earlier in the season which resulted in a 2-1 win against Potsdam and a 2-2 tie against the Cardinals. The Lakers are currently 10-4-1 overall this season and 5-1-1 in the SUNYAC conference.

Friday night will be the 106th matchup between the Potsdam Bears and the Oswego State Lakers. Oswego owns the matchup history with an overall record of 74-29-2 against the Potsdam Bears. Potsdam comes into the contest looking for their first conference win of the season. The Bears are currently last in the SUNYAC conference and are looking to turn their season around before the group is eliminated from playoff contention. Oswego State looks to continue their win streak against Potsdam that currently sits at five straight wins, dating back to December 7th, 2018. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Marano Campus Center to kick off whiteout weekend.

The following day, the rivalry will write another chapter as the Oswego State Lakers take on the Plattsburgh State Cardinals in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. The Lakers are on the losing side of the history book with a record of 44-79-9 against Plattsburgh State. Prior to the matchup earlier this season, the Lakers were on a four game win streak against the Cardinals that dated back to February 23rd, 2019. Plattsburgh State heads into the weekend with a 9-5-3 overall record and will faceoff against Cortland Friday night before heading up Interstate 81 to Oswego. The Cardinals are in fifth in the SUNYAC conference which features a four team race for second place. Currently, Oswego State and the rest of those teams are in a log jam behind Geneseo who is undefeated in conference play this season. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena on the banks of Lake Ontario.

WTOP 10 will be live at 6:30 p.m. with a complete pre-game show on Friday night. Oswego State men’s hockey snags win in dominating fashion

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team continued their win streak on Friday night against the Buffalo State Bengals. The Lakers extended their win streak to two after a dominating 5-0 win on home ice. Oswego State is now with 10-4-1 after the SUNYAC victory and improves to 4-3-0 in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. The Lakers also move up the conference standings posting sixteen points and slotting in at third place behind Geneseo and Cortland.

Oswego State got off to a hot start when defenseman Ryan Bunka walked in from the point to put the first Oswego State goal in the back of the net. The Lakers were just two minutes into the contest and the tally was assisted by captain Travis Broughman and forward Connor Sleeth. That would be the lone goal of the period before a hot second period that featured Oswego State netting three more goals. Tristan Francis secured his first career goal as an Oswego State Laker after a pass from Broughman. Eight seconds later, Jackson Arcan was fed a pass from Ryan Dickinson off the faceoff and buried the third goal of the contest. Francis would get the secondary assist and finish the contest with a goal and assist. The final goal of the period came from Shane Bull on the rush as the sophomore popped the bottle and got his second goal of the season. Alternate captain Josh LeBlanc and Conor Smart would get credited with the assists. In the third stanza, the Lakers would put the cherry on top with a tally from Quinn Warmuth. The defenseman secured his second goal of the 2021-22 season. Broughman and Sleeth would get the assists and the captain would finish with three assists to end the conference matchup. In between the pipes, Lakers netminder Steven Kozikoski would get the win after staying perfect and making thirty-five saves. His season stats improve to a 1.73 goals against average and a .939 save percentage after starting in net for ten total contests.

Oswego State now looks ahead to whiteout weekend as the Lakers welcome SUNY Potsdam and Plattsburgh State for two SUNYAC contests. The Lakers finish their homestand this weekend as Potsdam faces off against Oswego State Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. On Saturday, the rivalry game is set for a 7:00 p.m. puck drop as the Cardinals of Plattsburgh State travel to Oswego. WTOP 10 will be live Friday night at 6:30 p.m. and then at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday for a special hour long pre-game show from the Perch inside the Marano Campus Center. A Look Ahead: Oswego State women’s hockey prepares for non-conference contest against Utica College

OSWEGO, N.Y. — On Sunday, the Oswego State women’s hockey team will return home to host non-conference opponent Utica College. The Pioneers will travel west down Interstate-90 to take on the Lakers in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. The 3:00 p.m. puck drop will feature the Utica College team that currently holds an overall record of 9-2. The team currently is second in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference with an 8-0-0 conference record. On the other side, the Lakers are 6-2-1 heading into the matchup after having four contests cancelled this week due to COVID-19 concerns. Oswego State is also third in the NEWHL conference and has a conference record of 3-2-1.

The Pioneers were supposed to take on number one team in the nation Middlebury College prior to their matchup with Oswego State but the game was postponed most likely due to COVID-19. In terms of the matchup history, the Lakers are 9-15-2 against the Pioneers but Oswego State is currently on a two-game win streak against the non-conference opponent. Their last game was February 8th, 2020 in which the Lakers won 2-1 on the road. While in the national spotlight, the Oswego State Lakers are ranked sixteenth in the pairwise ranking while the Utica College Pioneers are two spots behind them in eighteenth. Faceoffs will be a big part of the contest as both teams head into the contest with a percentage higher than .580. Oswego State forwards Morgan Shines and Rachel Corbett will be essential in the faceoff circles on Sunday. The Lakers offense, led by Ariella Haas and Megan Teachout will need to continue their dominance Sunday afternoon after scoring an average of 3.1 goals a game in the first half of the season.

Oswego State men’s hockey finishes third in Oswego Hockey Classic

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Best Western / Clarion Hotel Oswego Hockey Classic wrapped up action on Sunday, January 2nd after the Augsburg University Auggies defeated the Skidmore College Thoroughbred 2-0 in the championship game. In the consolation matchup, the Oswego State men’s hockey team defeated the SUNY Canton Kangaroos for the third time this season with a final score of 3-2.

Saturday Game Recaps

The first match up of the tournament featured the SUNY Canton Kangaroos and the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds, two teams that have not been featured in the USCHO poll. Skidmore College would dominate for sixty minutes, and the game would finish with a 6-0 score line. Skidmore would secure three goals in the first period to get out to a commanding lead. Over the course of the contests, the Thoroughbreds would net three powerplay goals and finish going three for six when on the man advantage. The Kangaroos were unable to record a goal during regulation and would lose the shots battle thirty-three to ten.

The top game of day one was the competition between the Oswego State Lakers and the Augsburg University Auggies, a team that is ranked fourth in the USCHO poll. The 2-1 final score was in favor over the team that hails from Minnesota. The Auggies would draw blood in the first period with a powerplay goal off the twig of Patrick O’Connor. The defenseman buried a one timer goal that went past netminder Steven Kozikoski and into the back of the night. Oswego State would answer in the second period just fifty-seven seconds into the stanza. On the powerplay once again, Connor Sleeth got his fourth goal of the 2021-22 season. Tyler Flack and Jackson Arcan would get credited with the assists on the lone Oswego State goal. The go ahead goal would come in the third period from the away team. Jarod Blackowiak would secure his fourth goal of the season on the man advantage with assists from Mason Palmer and Grant Reichenbacher. The Lakers would not be able to find an answer before time expired and their five-game win streak would come to an end. Jack Robbel would get the win in between the pipes for the Auggies with one goal against and twenty-eight total saves. Steven Kozikoski would make a total of twenty-nine saves but give up two goals against while in the net for the Lakers.

Sunday Game Recaps

On Sunday, the 1:00 p.m. match up would be the championship game of the Oswego Hockey Classic. The Skidmore College Thoroughbreds would take on the #4 Augsburg University Auggies. The 2-0 score line would be in favor of the Minnesota team as the Auggies would win the tournament. The team would get off on a hot start as forward Fritz Belisle scored on a back door, tic-tac-toe play. The assists would go to Kyler Yeo and Sweden native Erik Palmqvist. The Auggies would not look back after that. Belisle would snag another before the end of regulation on an empty net goal to put the contest away. The Thoroughbreds were unable to get the puck past Auggies netminder Samuel Vyletelka who made twenty-two saves in the contest and was rewarded the win and shutout.

The consolation game at 4:00 p.m. would feature the Oswego State Lakers and the SUNY Canton Kangaroos, two teams looking to rebound after losses the day before. The Lakers would be the team to rebound after a 3-2 victory and their third win against the Kangaroos this season. Alternate captain Josh LeBlanc would be the first in the goal column with a goal eight minutes into the first period. That one would be assisted by freshman defenseman Ben Addison. Former Laker Jesse Farabee would have an answer four minutes later on the powerplay as the SUNY Canton team would put one past netminder Eric Green. Farabee would have another in the second period but that would come after captain Travis Broughman put the Lakers ahead towards the end of the first period. Connor Sleeth and Jackson Arcan would get the assists on the tally. Transfer Garrett Clegg would put the Lakers ahead four minutes into the second period. The game winner was assisted by sophomores AJ Ryan and Tyler Flack. Green would get the win in between the pipes and have twenty-two saves in the contest.

What’s Ahead

The Lakers would still get three votes in this weeks USCHO poll, released on Monday, January 3rd. The Augsburg University Auggies would remain in fourth after going undefeated in the tournament. Oswego State now turns their sights on Utica College, the third best team in the nation. The non-conference match up is set to take place in Utica on Sunday. A Look Ahead: Oswego State men’s hockey prepares for Oswego Hockey Classic

OSWEGO, N.Y — The Oswego State men’s hockey team heads into the Clarion/Best Western Oswego Hockey Classic on a five game win streak with an overall record of 8-3-1. The tournament welcomes three other teams into the Deborah F. Stanley Arena and Convocation Hall. SUNY Canton, Skidmore College, and nationally ranked #4 Augsburg University will join the Lakers in the tournament this season.

During the 2019-20 season, the Lakers lost to the eventual tournament winners, St. Mary’s Cardinals, in the first round of the tournament. On Saturday, Oswego State would fall to the University of New England Nor’easters 4-3 in the the consolation match up during that year’s tournament.

In this year’s tournament, the Lakers are set to take on the #4 Augsburg University Auggies in the first round Saturday night with puck drop set for 7:00 p.m. on the SUNY Oswego campus. This is the fifth nationally ranked match up for the Oswego State Lakers this season. So far, the Lakers have not beaten a nationally ranked opponent.

The Auggies and Lakers have only met once prior to Saturday night’s game. On January 3rd, 2009, these two teams met for the first time in Oswego during the Oswego Hockey Classic. The Lakers were able to take the 5-2 victory and send the Auggies back to Minnesota after defeating them in the tournament championship game. Oswego State finished 18-8-1 that season and lost to Plattsburgh State in the SUNYAC Championship finals.

Augsburg University travels to New York after dropping two games during the week in Michigan. One of those games was an exhibition contest against the United State U-18 Development team that finished with a score line of 6-1 in favor of the under eighteen team. The second game was against the number one team in the nation, the Adrian College Bulldogs. The Bulldogs defeated the Auggies 5-2 last night to continue to assert their dominance over NCAA Division III men’s hockey. The Auggies still have a 9-2 record heading into this weekend, one of the better records in Division III hockey.

The Saturday afternoon match up has the SUNY Canton Kangaroos facing off against the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds. The 4:00 p.m. puck drop features the SUNY Canton squad that has an overall record of 3-3-1. The Kangaroos has played less games then most due to postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On the other side of the ice, the Thoroughbreds come into the contest with the 6-4-1 record and a 3-3-1 conference record. On Sunday, puck drop is set for 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. for the two games. WTOP 10 will have the broadcasts for all four games this weekend in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena.

Progress Report: Oswego State men’s hockey

OSWEGO, N.Y. — After last night’s contest in Rochester, the Oswego State men’s hockey team has completed twelve games prior to the turn of the New Year. After six SUNYAC games and five nonconference games, the Lakers find themselves with a overall record of 8-3-1. The Lakers head into Christmas Break on a five game win streak. Oswego State also posts a stellular away record which features six wins and only one lost along with a tie.

Game Recap: Oswego State @ Nazareth College

Saturday night, the Lakers headed west to Rochester to take on the Nazareth College Golden Flyers. Nazareth College was hosting the annual Hockey Fights Cancer game at Bill Gray’s Regional Iceplex so the Lakers wore their teal jerseys and the Golden Flyers wore special uniforms to honor the cause. Oswego State halted a Nazareth College comeback in overtime to get their fifth straight win by a score line of 6-5. This win was head coach Ed Gosek‘s 350th win as the bench boss for the Oswego State Lakers. His all time record as Oswego State’s head coach improves to 350-111-31 and currently posts a winning percentage of .743. Oswego State forward Alex DiCarlo would net two goals in the contest, both in the first period to put the Lakers ahead. Tyler Flack would have an assist on both of those goals along with two assists later in the contest to put up a four point night and lead the Lakers on the stats sheet. Nazareth would answer in the first period to cut the lead in half but the Lakers would find an answer in the next stanza. Oswego State would net another two goals as Connor Sleeth got a pair of his own. Sleeth was also a factor in the faceoff circle with ten wins, the most from any Oswego State player. The Golden Flyers would string together four goals in the third period, two of them coming from Spencerport native Nick Charron. The tying goal would come with one second remaining off a faceoff that push the game into overtime.

Oswego State and Nazareth would trade shots to start the overtime period before the Lakers gained procession around the one minute mark. Ryan Dickinson would be the hero the Lakers needed after the defenseman redirected the puck off a pass from DiCarlo. The forward would finish with two goals and one assist in the contest. Goaltender Eric Green would finish the contest in between the pipes as starting netminder Steven Kozikoski left the game with the trainer at the end of regulation. Kozikoski would make a total of 27 saves over the course of the sixty minutes of hockey.

Progress Report

With thirteen regular season games left prior to the start of the SUNYAC Championships, the Lakers have a nineteen day rest before the start of the Clarion/Best Western Oswego Hockey Classic. This group of young talent currently sits fifth in the conference standings with six SUNYAC games completed. The Lakers have 13 points posting a 4-1-1 conference record. One positive, the four teams ahead of Oswego State (Geneseo, Cortland, Plattsburgh State, Brockport) have all finished eight conference games. The Lakers have the advantage heading into the second half of the season with two extra conference games still ahead on the calendar. Oswego State still needs to face Buffalo State and Fredonia as those four contests linger on the schedule. Both western teams have had a rough start in terms of conference play.

In terms of offense, the Oswego State Lakers average 3.3 goals per game. The offense goes through both Alex DiCarlo and captain Travis Broughman who are both tied for the points lead with a total of thirteen. DiCarlo has found his freshman form once again and has eight tallies along with eight assist for that thirteen point total. The sophomore is currently on a three game point streak which includes two games that feature multiple point nights. Broughman headed into Rochester with a four game point streak which featured a five point night in SUNY Canton against the Kangaroos. The captains nine assists is a team high and also included in his stat column are four goals for his thirteen point total. Currently these two players are the only Lakers above a point per game. Newcomers like Connor Sleeth and Tyler Flack have also made an impact in the Lakers offense both posting nine points through twelve games. Sleeth heads into January with three goals and six assists while Flack has two goals and seven assists.

On the other side of the puck, the Lakers defensive core averages 2.3 goals against per game, the fourth best in the SUNYAC conference. Out of the eight defenseman on the roster, there is not one that has not dressed in all twelve games so far this season. The team effort on defense has kept opponents to just an average of 25.5 shots per game which compares to the 30.4 that the Lakers average on net. Transfer Troy Robillard leads the team in blocks with a total of fourteen after his eleven games played in an Oswego State uniform. In between the pipes, starting netminder Steven Kozikoski has come to mid season form after a slower start. The Laker currently averages 1.90 goals against and posts a .931 save percentage after his ten games played this season. Newcomer Eric Green has also seen time in net for Oswego State and holds a 2.89 goals against average and has a .840 save percentage. The tandem has done a solid job in the first half of the season especially in tight games.

The special teams have also come a long way after a slow start in the 2021-22 season. As of right now, the Oswego State Lakers power play unit ranks number one in the SUNYAC with a 34.7 efficiency percentage. The Lakers have scored a total of seventeen power play goals over the course of forty nine opportunities. When the Lakers are a man down, Oswego State has only given up seven power play goals to opponents, the same as Geneseo. The Oswego State Lakers rank fourth in the conference with a penalty kill that has a 84.1 success rate. The special team units will be essential to success in the second half of the season.

On the other side of the break, Oswego State will have to look forward to the annual Clarion/Best Western Oswego Hockey Classic. This year, the #4 Augsburg Auggies, SUNY Canton Kangaroos, and Skidmore Thoroughbreds will head to SUNY Oswego to compete in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. On Saturday, January 1st, SUNY Canton will take on Skidmore College at 3:00 p.m. prior to the Oswego State Lakers facing off against the Augsburg University Auggies at 7:00 p.m. in front of a hometown crowd. Sunday’s match ups will be determined by the results from Saturday but Oswego State will play during the 7:00 p.m. time slot. Oswego State has only played Augsburg University once during the 2008-09 season during the Oswego Hockey Classic. The Lakers were victorious in that contest with a final score of 5-2. The Lakers will play six more contests after that weekend in January and a majority of those games will be SUNYAC match ups. Oswego State men’s hockey heads west to Rochester

OSWEGO, N.Y. — This Saturday, the Oswego State men’s hockey team will travel west down Route 104 to Rochester to take on the Nazareth College Golden Flyers. 7-3-1 Lakers take on a familiar nonconference opponent after stringing together a four game win streak which features Oswego State outscoring nineteen to four. This is due to the offense coming into form especially the powerplay unit which now ranks second in the SUNYAC with a power play efficiency of 33.3 percent. The Lakers have five powerplay goals over the course of the four game win streak heading into this weekend’s contest. Senior captain Travis Broughman leads the team in points with eleven. The Laker has three goals and eight assists through eleven games played and is currently the only Oswego State player that averages a point per game. Alex DiCarlo leads the team in goals with six total. The forward also has three assists for a total of nine points.

On the defensive side of the puck, the goaltender tandem of Steven Kozikoski and Eric Green have improved since the start of the season. Over the course of the past four games, Kozikoski has seen action in three of the contests and improved his season statistics to a 1.51 goals against average and a .944 save percentage. Green was able to get his first win as an Oswego State Laker this past weekend against SUNY Canton and posts a 2.91 goals against average and a .840 save percentage. The defensive core has allowed opponents to only score 2.1 goals per game over the course of the season.

On the other side of the ice sheet, the Nazareth Golden Flyers enter the contest with an overall record of 3-6-1 and find themselves sixth in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference. The Golden Flyers are looking for their first nonconference win over the season and are currently on a one game win streak after defeating King’s College 5-2 at home. Ryan Turse leads the Golden Flyers in points with two goals and six assists for eight total points. Forward Nick Charron is tied for the lead in goals with a total of three on the year. Starting netminder Matt Sayles posts a 3.01 goals against average with a .894 save percentage heading into the contest and will most likely start this Saturday.

Looking at the match up history, the Oswego State Lakers have only lost two games against the Golden Flyers since the teams first meet back in the 2012-13 season. Oswego has nine wins against the program and is currently on a four game win streak against Nazareth College. At Bill Grays Regional Iceplex, the Lakers are 3-1 and their only lose came during the 2015-16 season. Both teams are currently receiving votes towards the USCHO poll as Oswego State received thirteen this past week, and increase from the previous poll. In terms of Nazareth, the Golden Flyers received three votes this past week, the first time the program has been in the votes section this season. Both teams are looking to crack the top fifteen heading into the second half of the season.

Progress Report: Oswego State women’s hockey

OSWEGO, N.Y. — As the fall semester comes to a close, the Oswego State women’s hockey team finishes the first half of their 2021-22 season. The Lakers are 6-2-1 after nine games played and are third in the Northeast Women’s Hockey League (NEWHL). Oswego State posts a 3-0-2-1 record in conference play and trail behind Plattsburgh State and SUNY Cortland. Those two loses come from the two opponents the Lakers are chasing for the conference lead. The Lakers were able to string together a three game win streak heading into Christmas break after defeating SUNY Potsdam, Williams Smith, and SUNY Cortland.

So far this season, the Lakers have been led by Ariella Haas and Megan Teachout on offense. So far, the transfer from Elmira College has two goals and seven assists for nine points in her first season with Oswego State. Haas is currently the only Laker that is a point per game. Teachout, Kyleigh Grugin, and Morgan Shines are all tied for lead in goals with each player tallying four. The offense averages 3.1 goals per game with 40.4 shots per game.

On the other side of the puck, the defensive core has averaged only 2.0 goals allowed through nine games played. Defenseman Avery Webster leads the team in blocks with seven and also has four assists. In between the pipes, the goaltender tandem of Joanna Hiebert and Bryn White have done a solid job after starting their first season with the Lakers. Head Coach Mark Digby has given both goaltenders time in games but Hiebert has gotten the majority with six games played. The Michigan native currently posts a 2.30 goals against average with a .875 save percentage. White has less time in net but posts better numbers holding a 1.33 goals against average and a save percentage of .915.

After the break, Oswego State will ring in the new year with a trip to Massachusetts to take on nonconference opponent Amherst College. The January 3rd match up will be the fifth game between these two programs. Amherst currently holds the advantage in the match up history with the Mammoths holding the record 3-1. Oswego will head back to NEWHL play on January 7th when Oswego State heads to Morrisville to take on the Mustangs. Oswego State men’s hockey gets another weekend sweep

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team finds themselves coming out of the weekend with another two victories. The Lakers defeated SUNY Canton Friday night on the road by a score of 8-2 and then returned home Saturday to get a conference win 5-1 against the Morrisville State Mustangs. The Lakers are now 7-3-1 with one game left prior to a couple weeks off over the month of December.

Friday night, Oswego State traveled two hours and thirty minutes north to take on the SUNY Canton Kangaroos. The non conference victory featured a 8-2 score line with Oswego and Canton going into the second period tied at 1-1. Tyler Flack would get his first goal of the evening with Jackson Arcan snagging the assist. That powerplay goal was the first of five unanswered goals with four of them coming in the second period. Alex Dicarlo, AJ Ryan, Garrett Clegg, and Mac Lewis all got credited with the tallies to put the Lakers ahead big heading into the second period. The Kangaroos were able to get one powerplay goal before the end of the stanza but in the third period, Oswego State would find three more pucks going into the back of the net. Flack and DiCarlo both tallied their second goals of the evening and captain Travis Broughman found himself back in the goal column with the final goal of the evening. Oswego State netminder Eric Green would get his first win in between the pipes as a Laker after making fourteen saves and only allowing two goals.

On Saturday, head coach Ed Gosek put junior netminder Steven Kozikoski back in the net for their match up against Morrisville State. Tyson Kirkby would snag the first goal of the contest and let the teddy bears fly on Teddy Bear Night. All the toys were donated to Toys For Tots during this holiday season. That powerplay goal was assisted by Rocco Andreacchi and Ben Addison within the first ten minutes of the contest. Kirkby would tally another at the end of another powerplay for the Lakers as Flack and Arcan got back into the assist column. In the second period, it would be the Lakers once again as two defenseman buried two goals past the Morrisville State goaltender. Troy Robillard and Quinn Warmuth would find the back of the net and Warmuth gets his first goal as an Oswego State Laker. The two teams would trade back and forth powerplay goals as DiCarlo added another to his season totals. Kozikoski would make thirty saves and give up one goal over the course of the contest.

The Lakers now sit in third place in the SUNYAC conference behind Geneseo and Brockport. Oswego does have a game at hand compared to the two teams, and will not play any conference games until the middle of January when Potsdam and Plattsburgh State travel to the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. Till then, Oswego will head on the road down Route 104 towards Rochester to take on Nazareth College on Saturday in a non-conference match up. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Bill Gray’s Iceplex. WTOP 10 will continue to provide coverage of the Oswego State men’s hockey team for the remainder of the 2021-22 season.
