The Oswego State men’s basketball team defeated Fredonia on Saturday in thrilling fashion by a score of 76-73. With the win, the Lakers move to 12-11 overall and 9-7 in conference play while the Blue Devils drop to 4-19. The victory marks the first time that Oswego has had a winning record since January 6th.
Oswego’s offense started out hot as they scored the first six points of the contest. From there, it would be back and forth with Fredonia taking a three point lead into halftime. While it seemed as though the Blue Devils would pull away at times, Jamir Ferebee and the Lakers would find answers. Ferebee played a crucial role in the final quarter, hitting three key free throws to put the Lakers up by one with just under four minutes remaining. He was also able to get the assist on Tyler Pierre’s game-winning basket with less than 10 seconds in the game.
Ian Schupp led the Lakers with 25 points and was joined by Ferebee (18), Pierre (13) and Josh Ivey (10) in scoring double digits.
Oswego will face Brockport at home next Friday with tip off scheduled for 7:30 pm.

Oz Speaks Series: ‘Blue Lives Matter’

Moderated speak-out series “Oz Speaks” held the most recent talk in their series on Oct. 25. The topic was on the issue about Blue Lives Matter.
Students, faculty and members of the community were encouraged to speak about their thoughts and feelings about the situation without it being a debate. Some participants shared stories of family members in law enforcement while others discussed the impact of both the Blue Lives Matter and Black Lives Matter movements on their personal lives.
Sophomore Keonna Wren was one of the participants of the event. One of the issues she spoke about was her identity as a black woman and how the two movements, [Black Lives Matter and Blue Lives Matter] shaped her life.
“I absolutely love events like this because it’s not a debate,” said Wren. “I’m happy I got to spoke my truth and that’s what I came here for.”
Associate Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students Jerri Howland is one of the organizers for “Oz Speaks.” She says this speak out is different from the others because of the structure for how Blue Lives Matter came about and how this movement contrasts to Black Lives Matter.
“It’s not only important for students, but it’s important for everyone in our society to make sure we listen to all points of views,” Howland said. “I think it’s when we don’t listen to others and don’t understand their point of view that we don’t really get to the heart of what diversity is.”
Howland says the goal of the “Oz Speaks” series is to create a space for the SUNY Oswego community to freely speak about their thoughts on issues. She believes the series has successfully done that so far.
The next “Oz Speaks” talk will be Nov. 1 at 6:30 PM in the Campus Center Auditorium.

Student Association Update: March 1st
The Student Association held their weekly meeting of the Senate on Tuesday evening making it the sixth meeting of the Spring semester. The number of senators required to begin the meeting were met and following the approval of the agenda and minutes, the meeting was well under way.
The National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE), were the first and only guests to the Senate for the evening. NABSE is a community service driven organization, working to bring awareness to inequalities of education. Their first project will be shipping school supplies to underprivileged children in Haiti and will be tabling every Tuesday in the Marano Campus Center to raise money and collect supplies. They are also looking to hold educational programs that shed light on the mission of their club, but NABSE do not currently have the funds to support the programs they wish to hold. They presented their budget to the Senate asking for funds to help with funds the organization needs. Two senators will be writing a budget and bill, which will be voted on at a later time and date.
Following the guest to the Senate, the meeting moved swiftly to executive reports. Emily Nassir, SA President was the first to deliver her executive report in which she shared updates on current projects she has been working on. Nassir said that the website for SA is currently being worked on and she will have more updates as there is more progression in the making and launching of the new SA website. SA has paid for the student discount app which will be renewed shortly and will give students access to partnered businesses in town, who provide discounts to students at their place of operation. Nassir also revealed new ideas that she wishes to begin working on such as, getting more involved in opening week on campus in the fall, as well as homecoming held in October.
Shelby Gallaro, SA Vice President was next to deliver her executive report. Gallaro shared with Senate her current project. She is working in a new Pay policy for senators which could potentially go into effect in the fall. This new pay system would allow senators to directly earn money as opposed to the current system which is done through dock pay. Following Gallaro’s report, SA Director of Finance, Matthew Peters took the floor to deliver his executive report. Peters stated that all of the requested budgets for next semester have been submitted by the clubs and organizations on campus. SA will begin to look through the requested budgets and will be working on them starting the beginning of next week. There were no new updates on OzFest, but Peters assured that he will be updating the Senate as new information comes in and planning progresses.
In Hall Council reports, senators shared success of programs their halls held this past week as well as plans for new programs in the future. Cayuga Hall had a great turnout for their movie themed laker night. Funnelle hosted a recycling event “Going Green for Green”, in which they collected many recyclables which will be used to help future programs in their hall. Johnson is currently working on their event with all four lakeside dorms, where students will be able to participate in intramural sports as a friendly competition between all the halls. Johnson will be bringing new updates as planning for the event advances.
There were no special orders for the evening, so the meeting moved to the first and only general order for the evening. Rules and judiciary proposed a bill that would amend the vacancy protocol in the constitution that SA is required to follow. The bill to amend the vacancy protocol passed by general consent.
Following the only general order for the evening, the meeting was adjourned. SA meets every Tuesday in Lanigan 106 at 6pm. If students, organizations or clubs have any questions, concerns or proposals, they are encouraged to attend these meetings, as they are all open to the public.

Bullets for Broadway: Coming to a Stage Near You!
Come one come all to the local touring dinner theater musical interactive experience that is “Bullets for Broadway”. Filled with music, amazing local talent, comedy, romance, and a surprising murder mystery. This show will leave you will a full stomach and hands in the air wanting more from this incredibly talented cast all from Oswego county!
Director of the show Derek Potocki says the cast has been hard at work for about a month and that is has “all kinds of twisted plots, crazy things going on, you never know what’s gonna come at you next, it’s really interactive theater at its best.” With all kinds of musical numbers like “Me and You” featuring Jodi Halczyn as Toffee Alto and Peter Fekete as Tony Alto where they confess their love for eachother. Or “Mafia Queen” also featuring Jodi Halczyn as Toffee Alto and Stephanie Johnson as a chorus girl where they sing about Toffee being a mafia queen will leave you laughing yourself right out of your seat.
This show is being put up by none other than Oswego’s very own Theater DuJour! Finding out about how the company was started speaking with Tammy Wilkinson, founder of this company says “we were bringing shows to the Oswego Players, my role there was also producer, but we were having a little bit of a challenge getting butts in the seats and so we had the idea to bring them out into the community”. And good thing she did because they’ve been on a roll ever since, constantly in the media surrounding central New York.
