Women’s Hockey starts season hot in midwest
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team took a road trip to the Midwest this weekend. The first game of the trip came against Adrian College in Michigan. Adrian College was undefeated in their last season before Covid stopped their chances at the national title. The Lakers would start the season hot with a 2-1 victory. The first period would see the Lakers get off six shots on target and Adrian have seven, but the period would end 0-0. Megan Teachout would open the scoring for the Lakers in the second period with an unassisted goal. Teachout would get the Lakers second goal of the night in the third period. The goal, assisted by Chyne Kennedy, would come on a power play. Adrian would score with less than a minute to go in the game to make it 2-1. Oswego Goalie Joanna Hiebert had a spectacular night in goal, recording 31 saves on 32 shots.
The second game of the weekend came against Trine University in Indiana. This was the first matchup between the two teams. The game wouldn’t start as well for the Lakers, as Trine scored half way into the first period with a power play goal to give them a 1-0 lead. The Lakers got on the scoreboard in the second period. A goal by Amanda Zenstein assisted by Philomena Teggart seven minutes into the second period would put momentum on the Lakers side. Megan Teachout got Oswego’s second goal of the night and her third on the weekend to make the game 2-1 Lakers in the third. Rachel Corbett had a good day in the face-off circle winning seven of her eight draws. Lakers goaltender Bryn White had sixteen total saves and one goal against in the victory.

Oswego State men’s hockey falls short in non-conference games
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Lakers took the ice Friday night to take on Hobart College in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. Despite putting up a fight Oswego suffered an unfortunate 3-1 loss. Hobart was able to strike first in the eleventh minute of the first period with a goal by Jonah Alexander. Dan Sliney added on to Hobarts’ lead with a second period goal. Hobart scored again just thirteen seconds into the third with a goal by Chase bell. Oswego would get on the board in the 8th minute of the third period with an impressive goal by junior Troy Robillard. Hobart was able to prevent the comeback however and come out with the win.
The next day the Lakers went on the road to take on the Elmira Soaring Eagles in an intense battle right down to the finish. The eagles started off hot with 3 goals in the first period, two of them just 30 seconds apart. Jordan Gonzalez and Bailey Krawczyk both scored in the seventh minute in the period. Later in the period, Adam Eby scored an unassisted goal making it 3-0. You would think all hope would be lost, but Oswego wasn’t going out without a fight. The Lakers lit it up in the second period scoring three goals to tie up the game. Junior Josh Leblanc got Oswego on the board 8 minutes in to the second. 5 minutes later, Connor Smart scored an unassisted goal. Junior Travis Broughman then tied up the game with a goal assisted by Alex DiCarlo and Jared Nash. With a tie game in the second period, Elmira junior Jake Russo scored to give the Soaring Eagles a 4-3 lead right before the end of the second frame. Viewers were in for a battle in the third period. With 12 minutes left in regulation, Oswego tied it up once again with a goal by sophomore Alex DiCarlo. It was a fight to the end, but with 3 minutes left Nicholas Dromitrovic broke the tie once again, and sealed the fate of the Lakers. Oswego fell just short of a comeback victory.
Next weekend, the Lakers head into SUNYAC conference play where Oswego will head up north to take on the Potsdam Bears November 5th and then the Plattsburgh Cardinals the following evening. Both match ups start off at 7:00 p.m. from their respected locations.

Loss keeps field hockey out of conference tournament
Oswego, N.Y. — The Oswego State field hockey team took to the field Wednesday night against Cortland. The Lakers fought hard, but the final score was a 3-0 Cortland win. The first goal came five minutes into the game by Cortland’s Kierra Ettere, one of the best goal scorers in the country. The other two Cortland goals would come in the first half of the game by Lily Fox. The Oswego defense would hold strong in the second half of the game not allowing a goal on thirteen shots. Oswego would take their only eight shots of the game in the second half, four of them going on target. Oswego’s Chloe Parks would get off three of those shots, with two of them on target ones. Oswego’s goalie, Erica Scheblein, would have nine saves in the contest.
Unfortunately, this loss would keep the Lakers out of the conference tournament. With one game to go, the team sits at 8-8, but only 2-4 in SUNYAC play, putting them sixth in the conference. They play their last game of the season at Keuka College on Friday at 4:00 p.m.

Men’s hockey takes care of Canton in pre-season play
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team got their first win of the season this past Saturday against the SUNY Canton Kangaroos. The 9-1 win in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena featured eleven Lakers getting on the score sheet. The first period finished with Oswego State up 4-0 heading into the intermission as Josh LeBlanc started off the scoring with the first two goals. The senior would add another assist by the end of the stanza and completed the hat trick in the third period. Newcomer Trent Grimshaw also had a four point night with one goal and three helpers. Travis Broughman and Alex DiCarlo would also get into the goal column with Broughman netting two and an assist along with DiCarlo snagging his second goal of the season and an assist.
All three Oswego goaltenders saw action once again in the exhibition match up. Eric Green and Steven Kozikoski were perfect during their twenty minutes in goal for the Lakers. Sophomore Richie Parent gave up the lone Roos goal during his time between the pipes. Parent would have five saves in the period.
Oswego kicks off their 2021-22 regular season this weekend with two non-conference contests. Friday night, a 2018-19 NCAA Tournament quarterfinal rematch will take place in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena as the Hobart College Statesmen will face off against the Lakers with a 7:00 p.m. faceoff. Hockey Night in Oswego starts at 6:30 p.m. on WTOP 10. On Saturday, Oswego heads to Elmira to take on the Soaring Eagles, recent winners of the United Collegiate Hockey Conference. That contest on Saturday night is still waiting for a set time for puck drop. WTOP 10 will continue to provide coverage of the Oswego State men’s hockey team as the team heads into their 2021-22 season.

Oswego State women’s hockey sweeps weekend
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team started their season red hot this weekend. They played their first game of the season Friday night in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena against King’s College. The Women would come out firing with an 18-0 victory. The Lakers would score five in the first period, followed by nine in the second, and four in the third. Five players had two goals, with Kyleigh Grugin and Amanda Zenstein adding three assists to their two goals each. Those two players would lead the team with five points each.
The women’s hockey team would come back to the rink Saturday afternoon to take on Neumann University. They would come down to earth with a 7-0 win. The players were wearing their pink jerseys for their “Pink the Rink” promotion in support of those fighting Cancer, Cancer survivors, and those lost by Cancer. The first period was dominated in the Oswego offensive zone, with the women getting off fourteen shots to Neumann’s one, but couldn’t score. Megan Teachout would open the scoring for the Lakers about five minutes into the second period, her first of two on the night. Oswego would score four in the second period, followed by three in the third. Morgan Shines would also have two goals in the contest, both coming in the second period.
The Oswego State women’s hockey team’s next game is against Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan on Friday at 3 P.M.

Oswego State men’s soccer sneaks into SUNYAC playoffs
OSWEGO, N.Y. — It was a wild weekend for Division III Soccer. This past Friday the 12-3-0 New Paltz Hawks went on the road to battle it out with the 5-5-4 Oswego State Lakers at Laker Turf Field. New Paltz came out victorious after a goal in the 88th minute to secure this 2-1 win. New Paltz had just suffered a loss to Buffalo State on the 16th that was still fresh on their mind. The Lakers started off strong with Sophomore Kieran Gilroy scoring a goal in the 11th minute thanks to an assist by Junior Ryan Young. The Lakers were able to prevent New Paltz from scoring in the first half. The game heated up in the second half with two huge goals from New Paltz to seal this 2-1 victory. New Paltz Freshman Gino Mazzella tied it up in the 49th minute with a shot into the left corner. With both teams hungry for a victory, it was a defensive battle until the final minutes. In the 88th minute New Paltz Sophomore Tim Kane put this game away after a free kick by Joseph DiPreta resulted in a header goal. The Lakers would go on to face Oneonta the next day.
The Lakers hosted the 10-3-3 Oneonta Red Dragons Saturday at 1 p.m. The Lakers were hungry but would fall short after a hard fought game. Oneonta’s strong performance resulted in a 2-0 victory. They came out guns blazing and scored both of their goals in the first 30 minutes. Freshman Francesco Posillico would score the first goal of his college career in the 15th minute. This was followed up just 15 minutes later with a goal by Senior Matt Howe after an assist from Junior Lucas Fecci. Oswego was unable to bounce back after these 2 early goals, but put up a great fight. The Lakers secured a 6th seed spot in the SUNYAC Championship where they will go head to head with Oneonta on the road in a must see rematch October 30th.

Oswego State men’s hockey returns with loss to Utica
OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team took the ice in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena on Saturday night for an exhibition game against the Utica College Pioneers. The Lakers fell 6-4 after the Pioneers scored four unanswered between the second and third periods. This was the first game back for the Lakers after missing out on the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19. Utica would have the lead after the first period but goals from Alex DiCarlo and Jared Nash put Oswego ahead a little over half way through the contest. The Pioneers would come back with two powerplay goals on netminder Eric Green and another to round out the stanza. Each team would bury another goal in the third period as the Lakers did not have enough to mount a comeback in the closing minutes of the contest.
Men’s hockey will host SUNY Canton for their second and final exhibition game of the season on Saturday, October 23rd at 7:00 p.m. in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. WTOP 10 will start coverage at 6:30 p.m. with Hockey Night in Oswego streaming on wtop10.com/live and twitch.tv/wtop10tv

Oswego State Volleyball falls in first conference matchup
OSWEGO, N.Y — Oswego State Volleyball kicked off conference play this past Tuesday in the Max Ziel Gymnasium. The Lakers were swept by the Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland. The opening set was close until a 7-2 Cortland run which extended their lead to 18-12. Oswego kept the second set interesting as the Lakers trailed the Red Dragons 22-21 after serves from freshman Cara Simpicio. The outside hitter led Oswego with eight kills and 11 eleven digs over the course of the match. After a pair of errors from the home squad, Cortland would take set two. In the third set, the two teams were tied at 13-13 prior to a 6-0 service run from Cortland that led the Red Dragons to their first conference victory of the 2021 season. Oswego State falls to 0-1 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference. The Lakers will travel to Fredonia Friday, September 24th, for their second conference matchup of the season.
However, the Lakers will host a tournament this coming weekend in the Max Ziel Gymnasium. Oswego kicks off action against Elmira Friday night at 8:00 p.m. before hosting SUNY Canton and St. John Fisher on Saturday. Oswego State Volleyball fans can check out all the action on WTOP 10!

Oswego Volleyball: SUNYAC Preview
OSWEGO, N.Y — The Oswego State Lakers head into their third week of the season prepared for the start of conference play. The Lakers host SUNY Cortland in the Max Ziel Gymnasium Tuesday evening for the first time in 729 days. Oswego State kicked off the season with a 4-4 record which consisted of a successful season opener against the Keuka College Wolves. The 3-2 set win started Oswego on the right foot ahead of a weekend tournament in Morrisville. Seven contests later, Oswego will get set for a rematch against the Red Dragons after getting bounced from the post season in the opening round back in 2019.
The Red Dragons of Cortland head into the contest with an overall record of 5-2. SUNY Cortland swept the Cortland Red Dragon Classic back on Labor Day Weekend before heading on an away trip to New Jersey for a set of three games. The Red Dragons were ranked third overall in the 2021 SUNYAC Women’s Volleyball Preseason Poll back on August 25th. Oswego was ranked seventh by the head coaches in the conference.
The Lakers will look to get their first win against the Red Dragons since the 2018 season. Game one is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Max Ziel Gymnasium. Oswego State fans can check out all the action on WTOP 10 via the YouTube page.
