Women’s Soccer finishes their 2019 Season after splitting weekend

OSWEGO — Women’s Soccer finished their 2019 season this weekend against two strong SUNYAC conference teams. The Lakers started their final home stand versus Fredonia on Friday that ended in a 2-1 victory for the Blue Devils. However, sophomore Maggie Riordan would score the lone goal for Oswego just over five minutes into the game from a Graisa Madden pass. Fredonia would later get two past goalkeeper Sophia Portalatin, one coming before the end of the half and the second immediately at the start of the next half. Portalatin would rebound the following day against Buffalo State with a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory, the first SUNYAC win of the season. Lynsey Roth would snag two goals in the match up, one on a Penalty Kick and her second off the pass from freshman Katharine Balog. The team did not qualify for the SUNYAC championships, and finished their campaign with an overall record of 3-14.

Oswego Men’s Hockey Preview versus Nazareth Golden Flyers

OSWEGO — Men’s Hockey gets back to the ice this Saturday in their last exhibition game against the Nazareth Golden Flyers. After handling the CCHL Carleton Place this past Saturday, the Lakers look to play their first NCAA opponent of the season. Oswego State is 8-2 overall against this UCHC team ever since the colleges faced off for the first time in the 2012-2013 regular season. Senior Derek Brown looks to continue his point streak after tallying three goals last time out. Golden Flyers Head Coach George Roll will return to the Marano Campus Center once again after formerly being the Laker’s Head Coach from 1996-2003. Puck drop will be at 7 p.m. this Saturday during Family and Friends Weekend. WTOP10 will have coverage of this match up starting at 6:30 p.m. with Hockey Night in Oswego.

Volleyball drops heartbreak set to lose in five to Wells

OSWEGO — Volleyball hosted non-conference opponent Wells College Wednesday night in a five-set loss after a comeback from the Wells Express. After the team took a 2-1 set led over the Express, the Lakers would drop the next two sets only by a margin of four points or less. Recent SUNYAC Offensive Player of the Week Shauna O’Flaherty once again led the Lakers with 15 kills and 4 blocks. Other notables included Melissa Lussier (14 kills and 11 digs) and Sarah Massie (12 kills) along with Emily Costa playing stellular defense with 24 digs. Oswego State looks to round out conference play this weekend as they play host to the Brockport Golden Eagles. The contest will be played at the Mark Ziel Gymnasium at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Oswego Swimming and Diving drops first meet of 2019-2020 Season

OSWEGO — Laker Swim and Dive teams faced off against the RIT Tigers in a meet Wednesday night. The match up, at Laker Pool, saw both Men’s and Women’s dropping their first meet of the 2019-2020 season. Senior Walker Snowden would be a standout for Oswego State with three victories over the span of the night. With two individual event wins going into the 200-yard free relay, Snowden would get his third win alongside Laker teammates as they would finish a second before the Tigers. The teams look to rebound with another home meet this Saturday against SUNY Oneonta at 1 p.m.

Preacher Disrupts SUNY Oswego

OSWEGO, NY— Last Wednesday, a man named Saint Jesse Morrell unexpectedly visited the quads delivering his religious opinion. For roughly 20 minutes he was aggressively yelling to students his ideas of the LGBT community, targeting their lifestyle, calling it a sin. The students didn’t agree with what he was saying, retallying back in an argument until the police showed up. Since he did not have a free speech permit from the school, he was asked to leave. 

“He has freedom of speech,” Oswego student Sarah Novak said after he targeting her and her girlfriend. “So we also have freedom of speech, so we choose to kiss and fight hate with love”

Domestic Violence Awareness at SUNY Oswego

Purple flags placed on campus to signify sexual assault

OSWEGO, NY — It’s On Oz campaign is hosting Sexual Domestic Awareness events this month. Lisa Evaneski, Title IX Coordinator explains the problem of Domestic Violence we have on campus. “People don’t realize it’s happening.” Evaneski stated, “People don’t realize that their classmates could be going through this or that the employees of the college could be going through this.” 

Evaneski express how they are there for students on campus. She says, “We want people to know we see you, we hear you, we’re here for you because it is a private matter.”

With Evaneski and with student-run organizations such as “It’s On Oz” and “One Love Foundation”, this can benefit the people with the help they need and make the campus wide community a better and safer place.

Oswego Hockey returns with sizeable win over Carleton Place

OSWEGO — Men’s Hockey kicked off their 2019-2020 season with a win over Carleton Place Saturday night. The 9-1 victory in the special Teal Night jerseys saw multiple Lakers getting onto the score sheet by the time the buzzer went off. Senior Derek Brown would net two goals in the first period and one in the third to get a hat trick. Another notable standout was Carter Allen’s three-point effort (1 goal and 2 assists). Each Lakers goalie would spend time in the crease for the team totaling for a combined 19 saves. Men’s Hockey hits the ice on Saturday for one last exhibition game versus Nazareth College at the Marano Campus Center. Puck drop will be at 7 p.m.

Women’s Hockey drops first game to London Junior Devilettes

OSWEGO — Hockey in Oswego started Saturday afternoon with a game featuring Women’s Hockey and the London Junior Devilettes. This match up would be the first of two exhibition games the Lakers would play before the start of their regular season in two weekends. All though the team would fall to London 4-0, the group laid down steady work that can be improved on in the coming weeks. The Devilettes would put only one goal past senior Rachael Farmer in 14 shots in the first period. Tia Trovato, freshman goalie, would allow three goals in the third period despite a 10 save effort. Women’s hockey looks to move on into one last exhibition game Saturday against William Smith. Puck drop will be at 3 p.m. at the Marano Campus Center.

Oswego Soccer losses in tight game against SUNY Plattsburgh

OSWEGO — Oswego Women’s Soccer took a tough loss to SUNY Plattsburgh Saturday afternoon in a 1-0 score line. Plattsburgh scored within the first ten minutes of the game. Towards the end of the first half, goalkeeper Emma Allen got caught up in a collision and was relieved by Sophia Portalatin, the back up for the Lakers. The defense would aid Portalatin in keeping the Cardinals scoreless in the remainder of the match up. Oswego would tally six shot attempts overall, all coming in the second stanza. The team will host SUNY Fredonia next Friday night to start off the final weekend of the regular season. Kick off will be at 3 p.m. at Laker Stadium.
