OSWEGO, NY — Men’s Basketball secured the victory over Geneseo 64-42 Friday night. The Lakers got their 12th conference win of the season as Oswego was only up seven points heading into the second half. The Lakers would extend their lead in the next half as the group tallied 37 points. Jeremiah Sparks would net 15 points in his 32 minutes played as the freshman made five field goals and one three pointer. Brandon Gartland would also net 13 points as the senior dropped three three pointers.

Oswego remains in fourth place in the SUNYAC standings with only one game remaining. The Lakers have a chance to move into third but Oswego cannot fall as Cortland is already locked into the fifth seed. Brockport, currently locked into the number one spot, travels into the Marano Campus Center Saturday for the last game of the regular season. Todays game is also Senior Day as tip off is set for 4 p.m. in the Max Ziel Gym.

OSWEGO, NY — After beating Plattsburgh Friday night, Men’s Basketball battled Potsdam Saturday evening and lost 76-62 for their fifth conference loss of the season. After going into the second half tied at 33 apiece, the Lakers couldn’t hold the Bears as Potsdam put up 43 points compared to only Oswego’s 29. Brandan Gartland led the team with 18 points in his 38 minutes played. The 16-6 Lakers are currently fourth in the SUNYAC standings and have clinched a playoff berth. Oswego still can move up the rankings with three SUNYAC games remaining. The Lakers head to Oneonta Tuesday night for another conference match up.

For the 19th straight season, the Oswego State Lakers have clinched the SUNYAC Tournament and what a better way to do it than on Valentine’s day. The Lakers defeated the Cardinals on Friday night during their six point victory thanks to a combined, 43 point effort from seniors Brandon Gartland and Joe Sullivan. 

Plattsburgh kept it close throughout the first half while using their best rendition of ‘Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better’. Each time the Lakers grabbed a bucket on one end, the Cardinals always had an answer. Oswego held the lead by four points or less through the first ten minutes of the contest but three minutes later, with an already shallow selection on the bench, Plattsburgh Head Coach Mike Blaine had some decision making to do following the injury of Forward Jeremy Eisenmen. Eisenmen went down hard after crashing the boards and was clutching his left knee. He was able to put pressure on it but would not return to the game. 

In his absence, Matt Bernhard, a 5’10” stud off the bench, executed a perfect first half of shooting off the bench. Aside from his one missed free throw, he shot 3-3 from distance and 4-4 from the field ending with 12 of the Cardinals 34 points at halftime. 

Brandon Gartland shot five for eight from behind the arc in the first half, good enough to lead the book with 15 points at the break. Joe Sullivan was a vital part of the first half for the Lakers tallying nine free throw attempts and sinking five of them. Sullivan struggled to find his rhythm early on but that would change going into the second half. 

General Joe flipped the switch coming out of the locker room scoring 12 of his 21 in the second frame. Sullivan shot 5-13 in the second half and ended with 8 rebounds and 8 assists to add onto his impressive scoring performance. Coach Leone was happy with his big man’s performance.

“Joe plays hard every night,” Leone said. “He’s a senior and he is doing what we would hope seniors do at this point in their senior season. I’m really pleased with the things he did tonight. He deserves it.”

However, Gartland went in the opposite direction having a rather quiet second half. He scored just seven points adding his total to 22 without a single three pointer in after the break. “They were sticking a little tighter to me,” Gartland expressed. “Other people were making plays and we were still scoring.” For what he lacked on the offensive end, he made up for on the defensive end with four steals and a couple big time stops down the stretch. 

Plattsburgh got into some foul trouble five minutes into the second half when Erik Salo was charged with his fourth personal. Now with Eisenmen injured and Salo playing restricted and cautious minutes, the only other options off the bench were Marlon Todd and freshman Lamont Hough Jr. who never saw the floor.

With six to go, the Lakers turned on the after-burners going on an 8-2 run in a minute and 28 seconds taking a 69-61 lead with 4:05 remaining. The Cardinals never came back from this lead, falling short to the Lakers 75-69. It came down to protecting the ball tonight and Plattsburgh was not proficient in that category. Averaging 15 turnovers a game, Coach Blaine’s Cardinals exceeded that margin with 16 and 11 of those turnovers came in the second half.

Coach Jason Leone was excited about clinching the SUNYAC tournament for the ninth time in his nine years as the head coach of Oswego State but recognized that there was still work to do following Friday night. “We’re in the playoffs,” Leone expressed. “So now we are in a battle to try and get a home game. Every game has a significant meaning from here on out.” With Potsdam traveling to Laker hall at 4:00 pm for the second game of the back to back, the Lakers have a win under their belt and look to continue their winning ways after Improving to 16-5 on the year.

Last weekend proved to be a tough test for the men’s basketball team during a hard fought battle in Cortland. The Red Dragons outlasted the Lakers shooting 57% from the field and outscored them down the stretch in the second half. Oswego is still one win away from clinching a playoff berth going into this weekend.

The Lakers set up shop in Max Ziel Gymnasium this Friday night at 7:30 pm against Plattsburgh–a sub .500 team–and had no difficulty taming the bird up in the north country last month. Oswego came away with a 19 point victory despite a rather lousy five for 30 shooting performance from behind the arc. 

The Cardinals were without two of their on-court regulars in the first meeting and will look to get them on the floor for the second. Nick DeAngelis (12.7 PPG) and Adam Jaquish (88.5% FT) are two pivotal guys in their lineup that, when healthy, can be the best one-two punch in the SUNYAC. Oswego State coach Jason Leone hopes to keep them shut down if they see the floor on Friday night.

As for Potsdam, they come to town on Saturday at 4:00 pm after playing Cortland the night before. The Bears swam through Oswego’s defense in the second half of their matchup in late-January, taking home a ten point victory. 

Potsdam controlled the tempo outscoring the lakers in the paint 32-20 and 12-2 on the fastbreak. Coach Leone was displeased with their offensive performance that night, watching his team turn the ball over 15 times–which they have done five times this season.

OSWEGO, NY — Men’s Basketball rolled through the New Paltz Hawks Tuesday night as the Lakers won 80-55. Oswego took a commanding lead in the first half as the team scored 54 points compared to the Hawk’s 25. This is thanks to senior Joe Sullivan dropping 20 points due to seven field goals and two three pointers in his twenty two minutes played. Colby Moultrie stepped into the game and secured 12 points in only nine minutes played after netting four three pointers. This is Oswego’s 15th win of the season and ninth conference win to keep the Lakers in fourth place in the SUNYAC standings. The team looks ahead as they travel with Women’s Basketball to Cortland on Saturday for a 4 p.m. tip off.

OSWEGO, NY — Men’s Basketball dropped a conference game to the Oneonta Red Dragons 76-66 for only their second SUNYAC loss of the season. The Lakers seven game winning streak snapped as the Lakers would allow 43 Red Dragon points in the second half in the defeat. Freshman Jeremiah Sparks once again lead the Lakers with 23 points as he hit seven field goals in his 40 minutes played. Joe Sullivan tallied 19 points and also hit seven field goals along with two 3-pointers.

Oswego falls to 5-2 in conference and hold the 4^th spot in the standings as the Lakers look ahead to Potsdam Friday night. The Bears are 6-1 and tied for first in the SUNYAC standings. The Lakers will play right after Women’s Basketball as the Men’s game is set to tip off at 7:30 p.m. in Potsdam.

OSWEGO, NY — Men’s Basketball came away with another SUNYAC victory Saturday night against the Cortland Red Dragons. The Lakers would win 68-66, thanks to Jeremiah Sparks would lead the offense with 31 points. He had a career-high 11 made field goals during the contest. Oswego secured the lead in the first half and kept the Red Dragons out of the lead as Cortland missed a 3 pointer in the dying seconds to drop the game and fall to 3-3 in conference play. The win continues to keep the Lakers in the hunt for the top spot in the SUNYAC standings.

The Lakers are back in action Tuesday night following the Women’s Basketball game. Tip off is at 7:30 p.m. in the Max Ziel Gymnasium. Oswego welcomes in Oneonta, who is currently right behind the Lakers in the standings but has the same conference record of 5-1. This will be an important game for the Lakers as they fight for the top spot in the SUNYAC.

OSWEGO, NY — Men’s Basketball continued pushed their winning streak to five Saturday evening as Oswego rolled through Buffalo State 86-66. The Lakers established an early lead due to freshman Jeremiah Sparks, who netted 16 first half points. Senior Joe Sullivan would finish with 18 points along with 13 rebounds to secure Oswego’s third conference win. This victory also pushes Head Coach Jason Leone into second place on the most wins list for the college. This win ties Oswego for second in the SUNYAC standings and 9-2 overall. The Lakers travel with Women’s Basketball this Tuesday to play New Paltz. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.

OSWEGO, NY — Men’s Basketball improved to 8-2 Friday night after the Lakers defeated Fredonia 67-44 as the team capitalized in the second half. The Laker defense solidified the win by holding the Blue Devils to 21 points in the half. The Oswego win was headed by junior Liam Sanborn who led on offense with 15 points along with senior Joe Sullivan who tallied 14 points. The Lakers improved to 2-1 in the SUNYAC conference as Oswego will finish out their season with conference game play. The team has another SUNYAC match up Saturday afternoon against Buffalo State at 4 p.m. in the Max Ziel Gymnasium.  

Bethlehem, PA – The Lakers sailed down to Moravian College for the 40th Steel Club Classic picking up two wins on the perfect weekend. Their first matchup was against Montclair State who had scored over a hundred points in multiple games this season but couldn’t produce against the reigning SUNYAC championship defense of the Oswego Lakers. The Redhawks scored 73 points good enough for a season-low in their first 11 games this year, but it wasn’t a cakewalk win for the Lakers. 

Montclair State ran a baseline to baseline trap on Oswego from the opening tip until the horn sounded at the end of the game. Senior Brandon Gartland shot 5 for 6 from beyond the arc exploiting no-easy-inside-bucket Redhawk defense. Junior Liam Sanborn finished the game with 22 points and helped control the pace of the game when Montclair began to chip away at the lead in the second half. Coach Leone expressed that Liam is “the guy who runs the show for us” and as good as he was on Saturday, it was a different story come Sunday. 

Sanborn got into foul trouble early in the game against the Moravian College Greyhounds and didn’t see the floor much in the first half. Ending the game with 6 total points, Sanborn wasn’t the normal floor general for the Lakers. Freshman Jeremiah Sparks was the ‘spark horse’ on Sunday scoring 32 points bringing his total up to 50 on the weekend. Sparks plugged the hole in his offensive game after having five turnovers on Saturday against the Redhawks and Coach Leone was pleased with his performance. 

“[Jeremiah] has obviously got some g-d given ability with his athleticism,” Coach Leone praised, “tonight might have been Jeremiah’s best game in terms of moving the ball when he was double-teamed.”

Sparks was also a presence on the defensive end tonight registering two steals and three monster blocks against the Hounds–the only three blocks of the game for Oswego. Freshman Kaleb Cook was in the backcourt with Sparks and he came up with a couple of clutch buckets and rebounds down the stretch. This turned out to be another point of emphasis for Leone regarding his comfort levels with the depth on his team.

“We finished the game with two freshman guards out there,” Leone said “so that’s pretty good for the future of our program. It was a great thing for them to be able to go through that experience especially during a win.”

Although, this win may have been a loss if it wasn’t for Joe Sullivan’s ability to flip the switch in the second half. Sullivan was non-existent in the first half ending without a bucket but through all of the adversity Oswego played against being in Moravian’s backyard, he finished with 22 second-half points. 

“We challenged a couple of guys at halftime.” Leone expressed, “Like a senior should, [Sullivan] stepped up his game and played a great second half. We wouldn’t have won without him.”

Joe Sullivan finished with five boards to add to his second-half outburst and went 10 for 11 from the charity stripe. Funny enough, his missed free throw would be the ONLY missed free throw on the night for the Lakers. Oswego made 37 free throws on 38 attempts which helped seal the deal late in the game. Coach Leone was satisfied by their efforts at the line tonight.

“That was the thing I was most happy about.” Leone said, “I don’t know if we made that one we missed if it would be some kind of record for us. 37 out of 38 is pretty impressive and our guys deserve a lot of credit on that.”

Sullivan and Gartland combined for 21 of 22 at the free-throw line on Sunday night as the Lakers outran the Greyhounds winning by a score of 85 to 79 and improve to 7-2 on the year. The Lakers will play their home opener this Friday against Fredonia at 7:30 p.m. in Max Zeil Gymnasium, and look for Jeremiah Sparks to continue to produce as he grows into a future SUNYAC star.
