A Look Ahead: Oswego State women’s hockey heads to Geneva

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team heads into this week after a disappointing trip to the North Country to take on conference rival Plattsburgh State. The Lakers fell in both games over the weekend and enter the week with an overall record of 8-6-1. In the NEWHL conference, Oswego State holds the third spot behind Plattsburgh State and SUNY Cortland with a total of 11 points. The conference record of 5-4-1 is only two points better than SUNY Canton who is in the last spot in the playoffs if the post season started right now.

The Lakers will have this coming weekend off but first will travel to Geneva, New York to face off against the Williams Smith Herons. Recently, the Lakers lost forward Megan Teachout to the transfer portal. Teachout was able to produce on the offensive side of the puck but Oswego State was able to fill the hole in their offense this past weekend. Oswego State has already played Williams Smith this season back in November prior to Thanksgiving Break. The Lakers took that game by a score line of 1-0 as Ariella Haas netted the lone goal which was assisted by Chyne Kennedy and Emily Gustafson. Netminder Joanna Hiebert got the win in between the pipes for the Lakers with a total of 15 saves and the shutout. Against the Herons, the Lakers are 4-2-1 all time against the program hailing from Geneva. Oswego State lost 1-3 last time the group traveled for a road game against the opponent.

The Lakers will look to get back into the win column tomorrow afternoon as puck drop is set for 8:00 p.m. in Geneva. WTOP 10 will continue to to provide coverage of the Oswego State women’s hockey team as the squad continues their 2021-22 season.

Oswego State women’s hockey comes up short against Plattsburgh this weekend

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — It was a rough weekend for the Lakers as they suffered two unfortunate losses, one being a NEWHL game. The Lakers went on the road to take on Plattsburgh State in their first meeting of the weekend. They were hungry for victory and proved it when they went up 3-0 in the first period. Just before the first period came to an end, Sophomore Sophia Kyrkostas scored with assists from Simone Bednarik and Ariella Haas capping off a dominant first period. The Lakers went back to work against Plattsburgh State the following day in hopes of getting some revenge after their heartbreaking loss. During the first period it was neck to neck with freshman Ashlyn McGrath putting the Lakers on the board just two minutes into the contest. With six minutes into the first Plattsburgh tied the game up. From there the momentum was in their favor and the Cardinals went on to score two more goals in the second. Down two goals the Lakers tried to make some magic happen and pull off a comeback, unfortunately they couldn’t get anything cooking and ultimately lost 4-1. Oswego Women’s Hockey splits in weekend homestand

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team split in back-to-back home games this weekend, falling to Plattsburgh State 5-2 on Friday before avenging their loss with a victory over SUNY Cortland 2-1 the following night.

It’s been an interesting start to the new year for the women’s hockey team. After their first two games of 2022 were cancelled, the Lakers dropped their first game of the year last week against Utica College. Looking to get one in the win column, the Lakers went into their game against Plattsburgh hungry for a victory. The Cardinal started the game off hot, scoring the first two goals of the contest opening period. Going into the second period, it took just 54 for sophomore forward Morgan Shines to get the Lakers on the board. Plattsburgh lead 2-1 heading into the third period. With 15:23 remaining in the game, Amanda Zenstein took a shot on net during a Lakers power play. Sophomore Kyleigh Grugin was able to rebound and snuck the puck into the goal, tying the game a 2 apiece. Though, following this momentum shift, Plattsburgh would go on to score three unanswered goals to end the period. This was the Lakers second loss to the #2 ranked Cardinal this season as they fell to them in a 5-0 contest on Nov. 13.

Heading into Saturday’s game versus SUNY Cortland, the Lakers were in need of a win to keep pace in the competitive NEWHL. Despite the first period be scoreless, the Lakers had a dominant 11-3 edge in shots-on-goal. Just 4:47 into the second period, Cortland stuck first with a goal, taking a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later, the Lakers took advantage of a three-on-one fast break and scored off a Morgan Shines tip-in goal. Throughout the rest of the second period, the Lakers found themselves in penalty trouble. Twice they were two-women down, but were able to kill the penalty efficiently. The game remained knotted up until senior captain Philomena Teggart scored the go-ahead goal with 2:30 left on the clock. This was Teggart’s first goal of the season and she couldn’t have picked a more opportune time to score it. Joanna Hiebert finished the game with 19 saves while Kyleigh Grugin and Ariella Haas each totaled an assist.

The Oswego State women’s hockey team now sits at 7-4-1 on the season and 4-3-1 in NEWHL play. Following this win, the Lakers will look to carry their momentum into Tuesday’s contest against Morrisville State College. Puck drop is set for 2:00 p.m. at Morrisville.

Over the course of the contests, the Thoroughbreds would net three powerplay goals and finish going three for six when on the man advantage. The Kangaroos were unable to record a goal during regulation and would lose the shots battle thirty-three to ten.

The top game of day one was the competition between the Oswego State Lakers and the Augsburg University Auggies, a team that is ranked fourth in the USCHO poll. The 2-1 final score was in favor over the team that hails from Minnesota. The Auggies would draw blood in the first period with a powerplay goal off the twig of Patrick O’Connor. The defenseman buried a one timer goal that went past netminder Steven Kozikoski and into the back of the night. Tyler Flack and Jackson Arcan would get credited with the assists on the lone Oswego State goal. The go ahead goal would come in the third period from the away team. Jarod Blackowiak would secure his fourth goal of the season on the man advantage with assists from Mason Palmer and Grant Reichenbacher. The Lakers would not be able to find an answer before time expired and their five-game win streak would come to an end. Jack Robbel would get the win in between the pipes for the Auggies with one goal against and twenty-eight total saves. Steven Kozikoski would make a total of twenty-nine saves but give up two goals against while in the net for the Lakers.

Sunday Game Recaps

On Sunday, the 1:00 p.m. match up would be the championship game of the Oswego Hockey Classic. The Skidmore College Thoroughbreds would take on the #4 Augsburg University Auggies. The team would get off on a hot start as forward Fritz Belisle scored on a back door, tic-tac-toe play. The assists would go to Kyler Yeo and Sweden native Erik Palmqvist. The Auggies would not look back after that. Belisle would snag another before the end of regulation on an empty net goal to put the contest away. The Thoroughbreds were unable to get the puck past Auggies netminder Samuel Vyletelka who made twenty-two saves in the contest and was rewarded the win and shutout.

Sean Eccles named interim head coach of Oswego Men’s lacrosse team

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Following Coach Drew Bezek’s recent departure from the Oswego men’s lacrosse program, the Department of Athletics announced that Sean Eccles has been elevated to Interim Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach on Tuesday.

With this hiring, Eccles becomes the sixth acting head coach in the program’s history. After a stint as offensive coordinator at Georgian Court University (New Jersey), an NCAA Division II school, Eccles now travels to Oswego, not too far from his hometown of Syracuse.

The newly elevated coach will have the honor of coaching his younger brother, Ryan Eccles, who played his first season with the Lakers in the 2021. In six games, Ryan totaled two goals and one assist as a freshman midfielder. With their connection, we could see an increased offensive role for Ryan in the 2022 season.

Before coaching, Eccles was a decorated athlete with multiple collegiate and professional lacrosse honors. Eccles was a two-year captain at UAlbany, earning two second team all-conference honors in his tenure there. During his time with the Great Danes, Eccles totaled 83 goals and 28 assists while leading the team to the NCAA Division I National Championship Final Four in 2018. Eccles is also a former Major League Lacrosse (MLL) professional, being drafted 11th overall by the Denver Outlaws in 2019 MLL draft. Following his time with the team, Eccles served as the offensive coordinator for the Albany Academy Preparatory School team in spring 2020.

The Oswego men’s lacrosse team is coming off their worst season in program history as they were winless (0-7) for the first time. Now with an influx of recruits and the hiring of Coach Eccles, the Lakers will look to bounce back from their previous season and aim for their first SUNYAC Championship appearance since 2019.

Progress Report: Oswego State women’s basketball

OSWEGO, N.Y. —  The Oswego State women’s basketball team started the 2021 season off strong, going 3-3 in their first six games with an average margin of victory of 33 points. However, the Lakers suffered from a four-game losing skid to end the fall semester and now sit at 3-7 heading into 2022. Although Oswego is four games under .500, they boast two blowout victories over non-SUNYAC teams in SUNY-Delhi (75-39) and Wells College (73-23).

The Lakers are currently 0-4 in SUNYAC games with losses to SUNY Cortland, Buffalo State, SUNY Brockport and Fredonia. Though they sit one game back from SUNY Plattsburgh and two games back from SUNY Geneseo in the SUNYAC standings.

The Lakers are led by senior guard Danielle Caivana who leads the team in minutes per game (33.0), points per game (15.1) and 3-pointers made (25). Freshman forward Diamond Pickett is having a great start to her collegiate career, averaging close to a double-double with 8.3 points per game and 10.1 rebounds per game. Pickett also leads the team in field goal percentage, shooting 51% from the field. Sophomore forward Caitie Lilly has been the Lakers anchor on the defensive end, racking up 14 blocks thus far in the season, including back-to-back five-block performances versus SUNY Cortland and Buffalo State.

As a team, the Lakers are giving up 60 points per game, their lowest point total allowed since 2017. However, Oswego is only averaging 62.3 points per game, with that average being inflated from their 36 and 50-point victories earlier this season. Although the Lakers are on a losing streak, they’ve been competitive in all of their games thus far, with their biggest losing deficit being just 14 points.

With Oswego sitting at 3-7 entering the new year, they’ll need to be on the winning side of their close contests to have a shot at the SUNYAC playoffs. Luckily for the Lakers, there are more 15 opportunities for them to climb back into contention, with 14 of their next 15 games being against SUNYAC rivals. Oswego’s next game comes against Alfred State College on Monday, Jan. 4. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. at the Max Ziel Gymnasium.

Men’s basketball finishes semester on high, beats Fredonia

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s basketball team travelled to Fredonia to take on the Blue Devils Saturday afternoon. Their final game of the semester before an eighteen day break was a successful one with a dominant 63-48 victory. This was a game of scoring runs, with the Lakers starting the game with a 17-0 run over the first six minutes. Six different Lakers found the bottom of the net during that run, with Jeremiah Sparks leading the way with six of the seventeen. Fredonia would pull back some with an 11-4 run over the following six minutes and get the score to 21-11. The remainder of the half would be back and forth, and going into the locker rooms the score was 36-25 Lakers. Both teams were efficient from the free throw line in the half, Oswego shooting 8-11 and Fredonia 10-11.

The second half started with the Lakers pushing their lead to sixteen after five minutes, including an Oswego 6-2 run. Following a Jamal Achille dunk at the thirteen minute mark neither team would score for three straight minutes, with the scoreless run being broken by Laker Devin Green, who got the lead to seventeen again, the score being 51-34. The final ten minutes was back and forth, Oswego responding to every score by Fredonia. Ahkee Anderson led Oswego from the free throw line going 6-6, he would have eight points on the night, while also leading the team with four steals. The defense was big for Oswego in the game, 22 of their 63 points coming off Fredonia turnovers.

Oswego now sit at 7-1 this season while also being 4-0 in the SUNYAC. They sit second in the conference.
