Women’s Lacrosse Advances to SUNYAC Semifinals

OSWEGO, NY – The Lakers hosted Oneonta over the weekend for the first round of the SUNYAC playoffs. Oswego put the pedal to the metal and refused to look back, sending the Red Dragons back to Oneonta with a 13 goal loss. It was a record day on Lake Ontario, as the women broke the single season record for total wins in a season, which was set in 2016. Another record was tied in the game, with junior Isabella Lembo recording NINE total goals, which has stood since 2009. Here’s how it happened…

The Lakers jumped out to an early 6-3 lead in the first quarter with the help of a hat trick by Lembo in the first. Also scoring for Oswego in the first was Julia Quirk and Shae McConnell, who scored twice in quarter one. The second quarter was a nightmare for the Red Dragons, as Oswego exploded for seven goals in the quarter, giving up just one goal to Oneonta. To make matters worse, the Lakers scored seven straight goals before the Red Dragons could find an answer on offense. Lembo came out swinging for the Lakers, scoring her fourth goal just 13 seconds into the quarter. McConnell extended the Lakers lead to five, giving her a first half hat trick. Sela Wiley got in on the action, scoring three straight goals for Oswego, giving her a hat trick as well. Lembo gave the Lakers a ten goal lead over Oneonta, but the Red Dragons cut it back to nine with a last minute goal to end the first half.

The second half was a little less rough for Oneonta, going goal for goal with the Lakers in the third quarter of play. Oswego netted four third quarter goals, with Lembo scoring twice, McConnell adding her fourth goal, and Noelle Smith scoring her first of the game. The Lakers would go into the final quarter of play with a 17-8 lead over Oneonta. However, Oswego would put the game away in the fourth, netting five more goals, holding Oneonta to just one. Quirk and Lembo each recorded back-to-back goals in the quarter to help seal the deal over the Red Dragons. Sadie Zemanick scored the final goal for the Lakers with just eight seconds remaining in the game.

Oswego defeated Oneonta by a score of 22-9, sending a statement to the rest of the teams still in play. The Lakers will now travel to Geneseo for a rematch with the Knights in the SUNYAC semifinals. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, May 3rd at 7pm.

Lakers field hockey keep shutout streak alive with another successful weekend

Pagliaroli_Defense

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego state field hockey team kept their hot streak going as they took their fifth straight victory beating their record of four straight last year via shutout in two home games this past weekend. The lakers started off the weekend by hosting the Keuka Wolves on friday afternoon. Senior Kaitlyn Mastracco stayed with the theme of the lakers quick offensive attacks when she netted the first goal only a minute into the game. The Lakers then stayed quiet for most of the first half as the Wolves and Lakers had a continued back and forth midfield play with great defense on both sides. It took until the 24:56 mark of the quarter until Mastracco fired her second goal of the contest past the goalkeeper putting the Lakers up 3-0 at halftime. But the Lakers turned it up after halftime after Nancy Pagliaroli scored her second goal of the season ten minutes into the second half. Less than three minutes later Mastracco struck again for her third goal of contest on a day where she ended with a team leading 3 goals and 1 assist. Senior Kacie Simzer would then score two straight goals for the lakers to end a 7-0 win against Keuka.

The Lakers came back on Saturday afternoon against Sage college from Albany, NY. The Lakers started off quick as Kaitlyn Jordan scored the Lakers’ first goal 2 minutes into the game. The Lakers had eight straight shots and four penalty corners without a score because of stellar goalie play by Sage’s Anna Church in a game where she had 19 saves, the Lakers broke through on their ninth consecutive shot off the stick of Kacie Simzer. But this team shined with their stellar defense in a game where Sage had no SOG and limited possession. Pagliaroli, Mastracco and Bauer led the team with 2 goals each and Simzer and Jordan added the others in a 7-0 win over Sage.

Oswego State will now travel to La Plume, PA to take on the Keystone College Giants on September 13 at 4:00PM.

Lakers field hockey gets two big wins in home opener

OSWEGO N.Y.  The Oswego State Field Hockey team got off to a blazing start this weekend at they took care of both opponents this weekend in a handily manner. The Lakers team first took on Medaille college in the season opener on Friday night and wasted no time to score. Just 32 seconds in the game Senior Kacie Simzer scored the first of her two goals for the first Laker goal of the season which started an all out offensive attack by the Lakers. Senior Kaitlyn Ahle had a stellar day by leading the lakers in scoring with 3 goals and 8 points which ties the single game record for total points in Oswego history. Senior Megan Delaney and sophomore Kate McNally also chipped in with two goals of their own in the first half while Delaney earned herself multiple spots in the record books, tying the single game assists record and is now tied for seventh all time for points in a single game with seven. Ellie Kazel and Nancy Pagliaroli both added one goal in a 11-0 route of Medaille.

The Lakers kept the momentum going the next day as they shutout Houghton university 5-0 Saturday afternoon. The Lakers would get off to a slower start than Friday as Megan Delaney had the only lakers goal in the first half at the 6:35 mark. The Highlanders applied pressure to senior goalkeeper Erica Scheblein at the end of the second quarter, but Scheblein denied the chances, tallying four saves in a row to end the half making it a 1-0 lead for the Lakers at halftime. The Lakers picked it up eight minutes into the second half as they took a 2-0 lead after Delaney set up teammate Molly Darcy for her first goal of the season. Lakers women’s soccer with two shutouts this week to kick off the season

WSOC_2022_Canton

OSWEGO N.Y.  The Oswego State Women’s Soccer Team is looking sharper than ever as they steamrolled through both of their opponents this week. They headed to Cazenovia to challenge the Wildcats in their season opener. At the 17:30 mark in the first have sophomore Katie Delgrosso scored the first goal of the season for the Lakers and it was all downhill for Cazenovia from there. Freshman Cassidy Adamec would add to the Lakers lead right before the half scoring her first collegiate goal in a moment that will stay fresh in her mind for some time to come. The second half of the contest is where the game got out of hand with the Lakers scoring goals left and right showcasing how they are a force to be reckoned with this season. Graduate student Graisa Madden finished the day with a stellar two goals and one assist for the Lakers. Katie Delgrosso also put up two goals in this matchup. With a 7-0 victory in the books, the momentum was on their side as the lakers would face SUNY Canton this past Saturday in their home opener.

The Lakers resume against SUNY Canton is astounding. The Lakers have not let up a single goal in franchise history against this Canton team and the streak continued as they dismantled the Kangaroos in another 7-0 victory. The Lakers were firing on all cylinders from start to finish. Despite this impressive performance, the Lakers had some trouble finding the back of the net in the first half as Canton’s defense only let up one goal despite many opportunities for the Lakers. Similar to Thursday’s contest against Cazenovia, the second half is where things got out of hand. Freshman Briana Winkler had the home debut of a lifetime scoring her first two goals as a Laker in this game. Winkler was on fire the whole game and will definitely see the field a lot more in the coming weeks. Katie Delgrosso, Graisa Madden, and Luignina Serrao all had very impressive performances in this contest. The Lakers season goal total for their 2021 season was nineteen and with just two games in the books, they are already approaching that total with fourteen. The Lakers look to keep this momentum going as they take on Houghton University at 5:00pm this Tuesday.

A fly out to center scored the runner from third for Arcadia’s seventh run of the game. Arcadia only scored one run in the outing, a sac fly to center in the top of the third. Oswego State baseball team returns to action against Salisbury

Tammaro_Batting_Brock

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego Baseball team made their return over the week on with three contests. They faced off in two games Saturday against the nationally ranked Salisbury. These two contests were wildly different in outcomes. Their first game of the season was a rough one, with oswego giving up fifteen runs in a 15-2 loss. The Lakers scored a run in the first inning when graduate student Kyle Lauria stole second, leading to senior Ryan Enos putting the Lakers on the board. It was all downhill from there as the Lakers were only able to score one more run in the third inning when Ryan Enos scored his second run of the day.

The second matchup ended with a much better outcome for the Lakers as they found a way to come out with the victory. It was another rocky start for the Lakers as they were down by two runs after the first three innings. The Lakers were not even close to finished as they had a score to settle with Salisbury. A double by senior Julian Drew gave the Lakers a golden opportunity to get on the board. After a pitch sailed past the catcher the Lakers were able to cut the lead down to one. Another score at the top od the sixth by senior Ryan Weiss tied the game up at two a piece. Weiss had a dominant performance in this game, and came in clutch in the top of the ninth inning. Weiss had a base hit that set up senior Ryan Enos for a crunch time run, giving the Lakers a 3-2 lead. Pitcher Ben Wilcox would seal Salisbury’s fate in the bottom of the ninth. The Lakers would have the rubber match Sunday afternoon.

The Lakers battled it out in a hard fought game Sunday, but ultimately came out on the losing end. Despite being right in it until the very end, they ultimately lost 6-5. Oswego was on the board first at the top of the third when sophomore Brian Brezosky scored after a single that got him to the plate. The fifth inning was action packed as the Lakers scored 3 runs to give them a 4-1 lead. Salisbury answered right back though, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Later in the top of the seventh, Kyle Lauria would score his second run of the day after capitalizing on a botched pitch. Unfortunately this would be the Lakers last run of the contest as Salisbury went on to score a run in the bottom of the seventh, eighth, and ninth inning to seal their one run victory. Oswego walked out with one win this weekend but showed signs of greatness after going against top ranked Salisbury. The Lakers take a trip to Virginia to face Shenandoah University this Saturday and Sunday. Time is TBD.

Cortland won the tournament back in 2015 and 2016, but Oswego claimed the crown in 2018 and 2019. Weather cancelled the 2017 tournament resulting in top seeded Oswego to be crowned the champions, and COVID cancelled the 2020 tournament. Friday’s games will also mark the first time there have been fans permitted at a SUNYAC game since March 2020, as SUNY Cortland campus is now open to visitors and New York State has reduced restrictions on social distancing. Fans will only be able to attend if they are on an official list collected by the conference office. Each school was allowed to submit a list of 150 fans, bringing the game total to 300 spectators. Since the attendance is below 500, spectators do not need to provide a negative COVID-19 test or show a vaccination card. Fans are required to adhere to CDC, New York State, and SUNY Cortland COVID-19 guidelines.

#21 Oswego comes in at 23-3 (14-2 SUNYAC) after a 8-2 and 11-4 sweep over Oneonta in Oswego last weekend in the semifinals. Oswego State Baseball Moves on to SUNYAC Championship Finals

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Oswego State Baseball took on Oneonta in the first round of SUNYAC Baseball Playoffs on Saturday, May 15th and the Lakers swept the two-of-three series by scores of 8-2 and 11-4. With the wins, Oswego punched their ticket to meet the Cortland Red Dragons in the SUNYAC Finals on Friday, May 21st.

Kieran Finnegan had a tough first inning allowing two runs on four hits, but bounced back in tremendous fashion as his final line read 8 innings, 6 hits, 2 runs and 7 strikeouts. Oswego put up back to back four run frames in the seventh and eighth innings to secure a comeback 8-2 win in game one. Hunter Holliday had the first two RBIs for the Lakers in both innings with a 2 RBI double in the 7th and a 2 RBI single in the 8th in his 4-4 game one. With a 7-2 lead in the 8th, Myles Felton hit a solo home run to cap off the 8-2 victory as the Lakers took game one.

Oswego struck first in game two courtesy of a Brendon Frank home run in the 4th inning but Oneonta answered back with two runs in the top of the 5th to take a 2-1 lead. Oswego had their biggest inning of the day in the form of a six run bottom of the 5th that was highlighted by a Kyle Lauria 3 RBI triple as the Lakers led 7-2 after five innings and would not surrender the lead. Jake Terrill was solid on the mound all day for the Lakers going 5 innings and allowing 5 hits and 2 runs (1 earned).

The two SUNYAC Baseball powerhouses have not played each other this season due to the division format in the conference. Oswego goes on the road to Cortland on Friday, May 21st for a 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. matchup in the SUNYAC Baseball Championship Series as the Lakers look for their fourth consecutive title. If necessary, game three will be played on Sunday, May 22nd at noon.
