Women’s Lacrosse Advances to SUNYAC Semifinals

OSWEGO, NY – The Lakers hosted Oneonta over the weekend for the first round of the SUNYAC playoffs. Oswego put the pedal to the metal and refused to look back, sending the Red Dragons back to Oneonta with a 13 goal loss. It was a record day on Lake Ontario, as the women broke the single season record for total wins in a season, which was set in 2016. Another record was tied in the game, with junior Isabella Lembo recording NINE total goals, which has stood since 2009. Here’s how it happened…

The Lakers jumped out to an early 6-3 lead in the first quarter with the help of a hat trick by Lembo in the first. Also scoring for Oswego in the first was Julia Quirk and Shae McConnell, who scored twice in quarter one. The second quarter was a nightmare for the Red Dragons, as Oswego exploded for seven goals in the quarter, giving up just one goal to Oneonta. To make matters worse, the Lakers scored seven straight goals before the Red Dragons could find an answer on offense. Lembo came out swinging for the Lakers, scoring her fourth goal just 13 seconds into the quarter. McConnell extended the Lakers lead to five, giving her a first half hat trick. Sela Wiley got in on the action, scoring three straight goals for Oswego, giving her a hat trick as well. Lembo gave the Lakers a ten goal lead over Oneonta, but the Red Dragons cut it back to nine with a last minute goal to end the first half.

The second half was a little less rough for Oneonta, going goal for goal with the Lakers in the third quarter of play. Oswego netted four third quarter goals, with Lembo scoring twice, McConnell adding her fourth goal, and Noelle Smith scoring her first of the game. The Lakers would go into the final quarter of play with a 17-8 lead over Oneonta. However, Oswego would put the game away in the fourth, netting five more goals, holding Oneonta to just one. Quirk and Lembo each recorded back-to-back goals in the quarter to help seal the deal over the Red Dragons. Sadie Zemanick scored the final goal for the Lakers with just eight seconds remaining in the game.

Oswego defeated Oneonta by a score of 22-9, sending a statement to the rest of the teams still in play. The Lakers will now travel to Geneseo for a rematch with the Knights in the SUNYAC semifinals. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, May 3rd at 7pm.

Goalie Sarah Kamide had an exceptional game only allowing one goal through 40 minutes of play before backup goalie Freshman Nicole Aherne stepped into the game to replace her. The Lakers improve to 8-3 on the season with the win while the Bears drop to 2-8 on the season where their only wins have came against Suny Poly Wildcats and the Russell Sage Gators. Additionally the Bears lose their fifth game of the season. Potsdam will next face off against a struggling Oneonta Red Dragons squad hoping to get back on track and end their losing streak.

The Lakers have dropped five straight to the Golden Eagles since 2017 where their last win came back in 2016. Brockport is coming off a three-game winning streak beating Potsdam, Fredonia, and Plattsburgh. The Lakers will look to end that winning streak that the Golden Eagles have going for them currently.

With the way the Lakers are performing right now, they are on pace for their best season since the 2019 lacrosse season where they finished 11-5 and where their season that year ended with a 18-5 loss to Geneseo in the SUNYAC Outdoor Championship.

The Lakers travel to Rochester to take on St. John Fisher College on Wednesday, March 15th at Growney Stadium. Women’s Lacrosse Hands Pioneers First Loss of the Season

Isabella Lembo throwing the ball upfield

UTICA, NY – The Lakers extended their win streak to two this afternoon after a tightly contested road matchup against the Pioneers. Isabella Lembo and Sela Wiley continued their scoring streaks from their previous matchup against SUNY Canton. Wiley now has seven goals in the last two games, with Lembo having six.

The offense showed up to play in the first quarter for both teams, with Lembo recording her first goal of the afternoon less than four minutes into play. The Pioneers quickly responded to the Lakers with a goal of their own less than a minute later, tying the game at one. Sela Wiley was able to give the Lakers the lead just minutes later, scoring her first goal of the afternoon. Utica simply refused to back down from the Lakers, tying the game yet again with another goal shortly after Wiley’s goal. Lembo would give the Lakers a one point lead going into the second quarter with a goal coming in with 5:58 remaining in the first. Scoring slowed down in the second quarter, with Oswego netting two more goals, while surrendering one goal to Utica. One goal came from Lembo, the other came from from Wiley, with just 20 seconds remaining in the half. The Lakers held a five to three lead going into the second half.

The Pioneers outscored the Lakers in the second half, but it wasn’t enough for them to come back and tie the game, despite the Lakers scoreless third quarter. Shae McConnell put the Pioneers on ice with the only goal scored by Oswego in the half, coming in with 13:18 remaining in the fourth. Oswego held off a fourth quarter rally by the Pioneers to take home the six to five victory over Utica. Defense was the story of the game, with the Laker defense forcing 25 turnovers by the Pioneers, while only allowing 16 shots off against goalkeeper Sarah Kamide. Kamide was a difference maker in the net, recording seven saves in the contest, and getting the win in goal.

Lakers Comeback Against Clarkson Falls Short

OSWEGO, NY- The women’s lacrosse team dropped their season opener to Clarkson 15-11 despite rallying at the end of the game.

The first quarter started out the wrong way for the Lakers as they fell behind 2-0 as Clarkson controlled the first quarter. The second quarter was brutal as well for the Lakers as they gave up more goals to Clarkson. Clarkson’s Julia Lavarnway set up Madelynn Barnum to score to put Clarkson up 3-0 with 9:14 left in the second quarter. Lavarnway had a great second quarter assisting with two goals for the Golden Knights, Lavarnway would score later in the second quarter as she scored to put Clarkson up 6-0 with 3:58 left in the first half. The Lakers would finally get on the board as Katie Fierro would score with 40 seconds left in the first half as Shae McConnell would assist with the goal. The Lakers would then go on their own attack as Madison Davis put on a show scoring three straight goals to put the Lakers down 11-4. A penalty on Clarkson’s Kaitlyn McNamara set up Shae McConnell to score her first goal of the season but the Lakers still trailed 11-5. Mia Petrone would score her second goal of the day for Clarkson as they led 12-6 over Oswego at the end of the third quarter. Hailee Millington would score her fourth goal of the game as Clarkson led 13-6 early in the fourth quarter. Isabella Lembo, Julia Quirk, and Katie Fierro would give the Lakers life as they trailed 15-10. Madison Davis would score her fifth goal of the game as the Lakers trailed 15-11 but it was a little too late with 1:50 left in the game, the Lakers would lose their season opener. The last two matchups between Clarkson and Oswego were the season openers to the women’s lacrosse season and the Lakers would drop both games. Oswego’s last win against Clarkson came on March 1, 2019 where they won on the road against Clarkson 16-14 but they haven’t beat Clarkson at Laker Turf Stadium since the 2010-2011 women’s lacrosse season.

The Lakers travel to Suny Canton on Friday, March 3rd to take on the Kangaroos. The Lakers are undefeated against Canton as the Kangaroos look to break the long winning streak by the Lakers against them and the Lakers look to rebound and win their first game of the season.

Oswego State women’s lacrosse falls in opening round of SUNYAC tournament

ONEONTA, N.Y. — On Tuesday, the Oswego State women’s lacrosse team traveled to Oneonta to take on the Red Dragons in the first round of the SUNYAC tournament. In the back-and-forth contest which saw six Lakers total at least two points, Oswego would end up falling to the home team 14-12.

To open up the first five minutes of play, Oneonta came out firring quickly, putting up three consecutive goals. Though, it was at the 7:15 mark of the quarter when Julia Quirk scored her first of many goals on the day on a player-up opportunity. Four minutes later Isabella Lembo would continue the Lakers scoring run, finding the back of the net off a picture-perfect pass from Sela Wiley. In the final two minutes of the opening frame, both teams put in another goal. For Oswego, it was Logan Castiglione who — like many games this season — showed her playmaking prowess, setting up Shae McConnell to bring the score to 4-3. Within a minute of the second quarter, Oneonta answered back to the late goal scored by the Lakers and brought their lead to 5-3. Then once more at the 12:56 mark, the Red Dragons got another one passed Sarah Kamide to take a three-goal lead. From here on, the momentum started to shift towards the Lakers. Madison Davis found a Quirk cutting through the lane for a goal to make the score 7-5 with &:34 remaining in the half. Then much like the first quarter, Oswego got another late goal before the closing buzzer. With 40 seconds remaining, Wiley added her second assist of the game on a pass to McConnell, cutting the deficit to just one goal at the break.

It was key for Oswego to carry that momentum into the third quarter and that’s exactly what they did. Just 16 seconds into the second half, Wiley added another assist, finding an open Castiglione to tie the game at seven. However, the Red Dragons were not going to give up that easy. Oneonta kicked it up a notch, scoring the game’s next three goals spanning from 14:13-11:47. This put the Red Dragons up 10-7. At the 11:02 mark, Castiglione got her third point of the afternoon as she set up Davis for her first goal. Following this, Oneonta started to pull away little by little. At the 9:03 mark, the home team took a 12-8 lead after scoring two straight goals. Oswego was able to chip away at this lead before the end of the quarter as Quirk put in another goal with 1:45 remaining. This brought the contest back to a three-goal difference heading into the final quarter. Less than two minutes into the fourth, Oneonta scored once more to take a 13-9 lead. Shortly after, Quirk scored again following a caused turnover by Lembo. Although, the Red Dragons fired back at 9:15 to regain their four-goal lead. Oswego scored the final two goals of the game, but those final two goals of the game would end up being the final two goals of the season for the Lakers. Oswego wasn’t able to find the back of the net over the final three minutes and Oneonta would go on to win 14-12.

Statistically, the game was relatively even. Oswego barely trailed the Red Dragons in total shots (29-28), but did have two more turnovers in the game (19-17). Where things weren’t even, though, came in the ground ball department where Oneonta was extremely efficient (23-14). The Lakers had a total of six players rack up at least two points including Julia Quirk (6g), Sela Wiley (5a), Madison Davis (2g, 2a), Logan Castiglione (1g, 2a), Shae McConnell (2g), and Isabella Lembo (1g, 1a). Sarah Kamide also brought in 10 saves throughout the contest.

Although it isn’t the outcome the team or Coach Howard wanted, this season was a success for the Lakers. This season marked the first time Oswego made the playoffs since 2019, over three years ago. This was also the first time Oswego had a winning record in the SUNYAC conference (5-4) since that very season. In the 2021 season, one of the Lakers biggest problems was that they were too reliant on Sela Wiley to generate offense and score goals. However, Oswego completely flipped the switch and were much more efficient in 2022. The Lakers saw five players total more than 20 goals this season as opposed to last year where they only had one. This — in part — was due to the meteoric rise of Julia Quirk, who put up 35 goals this season which was 30 more than she had in 2021. Oswego was also much better at setting teammates up for success this year. Logan Castiglione once again led the team in assists, this time with 34 which was more than double the amount she had last season (15). Finally, Oswego saw great production from freshman goalkeeper Sarah Kamide. In her first year with the team, Kamide totaled 152 saves and more impressively, play every second of every game this year, solidifying herself as the Ironwoman the Lakers will need moving forward.

Through a hard fought season, Oswego was able to put together a much improved 2022 campaign. Although the outcome could have been more favorable, the team put on some mightily impressive performances. With only one senior graduating this year, the Oswego State women’s lacrosse team looks to be intact for the foreseeable future. And with the talent this team possesses currently, the future is brighter than ever for the Lakers.

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Pure domination from start to finish. That’s what I have to say about this contest. The Lakers hosted Plattsburgh Saturday in a win or go home matchup for both teams. The Lakers clearly proved that they wanted it more, winning in dominant fashion. Besides the opening face off, this game was never close. The Lakers got on the board in the opening minutes of the contest and were relentless the rest of the game. Up by five at the end of the first, this game was going just as planned for the lakers. At the end of the second Plattsburgh was down ten and the running clock was in full effect. The game was already over by halftime. Plattsburgh was able to score some pity points in the second half but the Lakers continued to dominate. The Final score was 17-6. An absolute massacre. Senior Isabella Lembo had an incredible performance in her last regular season game as a Laker. She scored a whopping seven goals in the contest. Sophomore Jullia Quirk also had an impressive performance with three goals. Logan Castiglione let all her teammates eat as she had two goals compared to her eight assists. The Lakers head to the first round of the SUNYAC championship this Tuesday. They take on SUNY Oneonta at 4 p.m on the road.

Oswego State women’s lacrosse takes setback against SUNY Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team headed on the road Wednesday to take on the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles in a SUNYAC matchup. The Lakers would fall 15-5 to the Golden Eagles to drop to 4-4 in the conference. With the win, SUNY Brockport clinches a berth to the post season with a SUNYAC record of 6-2 over the course of the 2022 campaign. Oswego State is now 5-10 in the 2022 season overall.

SUNY Brockport started off the contest with four straight goals before the Lakers found the back of the net in the 2nd quarter. Oswego State was held off the scoresheet in the 1st stanza but Sela WIley added to her season goal total and put the Lakers on the board. Madison Davis would snag the assist on the shot and the Lakers place ketchup against the Golden Eagles. However, SUNY Brockport would put 6 more goals in before the Lakers found twine once again. Wiley netted her second in the 3rd quarter to try and narrow the margin. The captain would complete the hattrick at the end of the quarter as Julia Quirk got credit for the assist. Quirk would add another goal in the final stanza and Shae McConnell put one in with 7 minutes remaining in regulation for her 29 goal of the season. Netminder Sarah Kamide made 7 saves over the course of the game and allowed 16 goals. The Lakers were out shot 32 to 19 in the contest.

Oswego State now turns their attention to Plattsburgh State this Saturday for Senior Day at Laker Turf Stadium. With just under eight minutes to go, Cortland got a penalty, and Oswego would capitalize. Isabella Lembo scored on the man-up advantage, for Oswego’s second, just nine seconds into the penalty. Lembo scored again just three minutes later for Oswego’s third, Castiglione tallying assists on both goals. The Red Dragons answered with one final goal, their seventeen of the game. Oswego would grab one more consolation goal, Shae McConnell scoring, assisted by Madison Davis. Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse Team Falls in Season Finale

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse team lost their fifth and final game of the 2021 season, dropping to no. 16 ranked Geneseo Knights, 20-3. This was Oswego’s fourth straight loss to Geneseo and second loss in 2021 as they were previously defeated 22-9 on April 12th.

The Knights opened Sunday’s game with back-to-back goals from senior attack, Hannah Marafioti. They then followed that up with an 11-0 scoring run and held the Lakers scoreless until the opening minutes of the second half. Freshman attack, Isabella Lembo, responded with back-to-back goals of her own to put Oswego on the board, though the Lakers were unable to generate enough offense to keep up with Geneseo. The Knights defense was dominant throughout the entire game, holding the Lakers to just 11 total shots, including 5 in the first half. Geneseo also caused Oswego to turn the ball over 26 times, whereas they had only 18. Three Knights had hat-tricks in Sunday’s matchup, including Jacqui Thorsen (4), Emma Gaenzle (3), and Hannah Marafioti (3). Freshman midfielder, Shae McConnell, also scored a goal for Oswego, bringing her season total to 19.

Oswego honored two seniors on Sunday, including Kamryn Sherman and Lynsey Roth. Roth is an attack/midfield hybrid from Syracuse. She just joined the Women’s Lacrosse team this year and appeared in three games for the Lakers in 2021 after playing for the Oswego State Women’s Soccer team. Roth was able to add depth on a smaller roster under head coach Britt Howard. Sherman was a four-year starter for Oswego and appeared in 45 games. She’s totaled 50 goals and 36 points in her collegiate career and will finish with a .562 all-time shot percentage. Both athletes will surely be missed by teammates, coaches, and fans alike for the contributions on and off the field.

Following an unprecedented and abrupt end to their 2020 season, the Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse team finishes the 2021 season 3rd in the SUNYAC West division with a record of 3-4. Although it wasn’t the outcome many were hoping for, there are many positive things to take away from this season for Coach Britt Howard and the Lakers. In a reduced season, Oswego had four players total 20 or more points in 2021: Sela Wiley (34), Logan Castiglione (26), Shae McConnell (23), and Isabella Lembo (20). Oswego Women’s Lacrosse has an abundance of young, talented athletes who are only going to get better moving forward. With more experience under their belts, the Lakers are sure to be contenders in upcoming seasons. Oswego State unfortunately wrapped up their season, but Brockport and Geneseo will represent the division in the SUNYAC Championship this coming weekend. This will wrap up WTOP 10’s coverage of the Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse team for the 2021 season.
