Lakers fall to Saint Mary’s in Pathfinder

OSWEGO, NY — The Lakers fell short to Saint Mary’s University Friday night due to a stellar performance in net by Al Rogers for the Cardinals. The 1-0 score line featured Oswego out shooting the Cardinals 30 to 22 and dominating in the face off circle 38 to 17 thanks to forward Anthony Passero. This loss is the first of the season in the Marano Campus Center and snaps their three game win streak that came out of SUNYAC play. Moving forward, the tenth ranked Lakers continue in the Pathfinder/Oswego State Hockey Classic tomorrow night against the #9 University of New England Nor’easters who fell to #14 Williams College earlier in the day. The Cardinals and Ephs will do battle at 4 pm for the Pathfinder Championship.

A Preview of the 2020 Pathfinder Bank/Oswego State Hockey Classic

OSWEGO, NY — In the first weekend of the new decade, Men’s Hockey welcomes in three out of conference teams to the 2020 Pathfinder Bank/Oswego State Hockey Classic. The 14th edition of the four team tournament is set to begin this Friday as the Lakers look to defend the title. This year, the competition is set to feature three nationally ranked programs, #9 University of New England, #10 Oswego, #14 Williams College, along with Saint Mary’s University traveling in from Minnesota. The Lakers, who currently sit atop the SUNYAC conference with an overall record of 7-3, will face the Saint Mary’s Cardinals at 7 p.m. on Friday in the semifinal round. The 3-5-1 Cardinals look to build on their win over Gustavus Adolphus College back on December 7th, while Oswego looks to bring home some recent success that was found on the road. #9 University of New England and #14 Williams college will face off before hand at 4 p.m. which will feature an offensive talented group from UNE against the defensive Ephs of Williams college. Oswego Women’s Hockey falls to Amherst in last game of 2019

OSWEGO — Women’s Hockey had a minor setback in their 2019-2020 season today as they fell to the Amherst Mammoths. The 3-0 loss was the first since November 8th when the Lakers lost to the Plattsburgh Cardinals. The Mammoths went ahead on the scoreboard in the first period on the powerplay. They would not add to their total till the third period as the group netted one even strength and then towards the end as the group buried an empty net goal. Senior Rachael Farmer kept Oswego in this game who finished with 19 saves. The Lakers will take a month off until they battle King’s College in the Marano Campus Center and then travel to Morrisville for a NEWHL matchup. Women’s Hockey finishes their first half of the season at 7-3-1 and in second place in the Northeast Women’s Hockey League.

Oswego Women’s Hockey Preview versus Amherst Mammoths

OSWEGO — The last hockey game taking place in the Marano Campus Center this semester is set to feature the Women’s hockey team, who recently beat the Canton Roos. The Lakers were victorious in Canton Friday night as their NEWHL matchup finished 2-1. Freshman Mia Conboy tallied the game winner in the second period to put the group on a four game win streak, which may stabilize them in second place in the conference. Before heading into winter break, the Lakers welcome Amherst College, a small college located in Massachusetts. The last time this NESCAC team traveled to Oswego was in 2012, however the Lakers beat the Mammoths on the road in 2018. If the Lakers obtain the win tomorrow, the team will head into break on a five game win streak that would be the first since the beginning of the 2018-19 campaign. Women’s Hockey continues win streak with victory over SUNY Cortland

OSWEGO — Women’s Hockey extends their winning streak to three wins after the group defeated the Cortland Red Dragons Wednesday night in the Marano Campus Center. The 3-2 win featured multiple Lakers getting on the stat sheet which was led by Megan Teachout. The freshman contributed by netting Oswego’s first goal of the night and tallying an assist on Morgan Shines game winning goal in the third period. The Lakers fourth line got the tying goal late in the second period when Aislinn McAleer buried a rebound off a Kate Randazzo shot. Sara Cruise returned to the line up and tallied an assist on the McAleer goal for her first point of the season. Rachael Farmer saved 19 shots and finished with a .905 save percentage in the win. This victory moves the Lakers into second in the NEWHL standings before they head to SUNY Canton on Friday, who’s currently 0-6-1 and last in the conference. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m. in the Roos House.

Women’s Hockey Preview versus conference rivals Cortland

OSWEGO — Women’s Hockey returns home tomorrow night to battle with the Cortland Red dragons, who sits in second in the NEWHL. Cortland, who is coming off a weekend sweep at Lebanon Valley, travels back into the Marano Campus Center after tying the Lakers three weeks back. Oswego looks to continue their conference successes as the group were victorious in Potsdam two weeks ago. Their success has recently come from their special team opportunities as the team has tallied ten power play goals in eight games against conference opponents. Senior Eryn Stewart and junior Amber Thomas have both been key for Oswego’s offensive performance as both forwards have reached double digits in points only eight games into the campaign. Goaltender Rachael Farmer continues to lead the back end posting a .903 save percentage in her seven games played. The fourth place Oswego team will match up with the Cortland at 7 p.m. which is also their annual Hats, Mittens, & Coats Drive.

Women’s Hockey stays undefeated at home with win over Canton

OSWEGO — Women’s Hockey defended the Wheelhaus once again Friday as the group defeated Canton 2-1. This conference match up featured a scoreless first period that continued into the second stanza until freshman Morgan Shines buried a rebound from Kyleigh Grugin. Freshman Maura McKeown would get credited with the second assist for her first point as a Laker. Grugin would get back on the score sheet as the freshman tallied her first career goal on the powerplay. The Canton Roos would however cut the deficit in half as the Roos scored on a five-on-three advantage six minutes into the third. Tia Trovato would finish strong in her first collegiate start as she posted a .933 save percentage to go on and get her first victory. The win keeps the Lakers at fifth in the NEWHL standings as they continue conference play tonight on the road in Potsdam to face the 3-3 Bears. Puck drop is at 3 p.m. at the Maxcy Ice Arena.  

Oswego rolls past SUNY Canton to continue winning success

OSWEGO — Women’s Basketball gets there second straight win Wednesday night against Canton in a 64-25 final. The victory featured a full Oswego effort as the team outscored the Roos 39-6 at halftime which was a result of some stellular defense as multiple Lakers posted more than four defensive rebounds. Taylor Torchia posted 3-6 for three pointers and finished with 13 points on the game and sophomore Ramatoulaye Sy tallied 16 points as she went 7-15 for field goals. Oswego plans to keep their winning success at home versus Alfred State this Saturday at the Max Ziel Gymnasium. Tip off will be at 3 p.m.

Women’s Hockey holds off Cortland to tie

OSWEGO — The Women’s Hockey team recorded a 3-3 tie against the Cortland Red Dragons this past Saturday. The Lakers striked first six minutes into the first period as Amber Thomas buried one past the Cortland goalie. She would also tally an assist later in the game. Captain Kate Randazzo would score on the powerplay in the second stanza to increase the Lakers lead. The third period would feature a scoring spree as Emily Gustafson got on the board with her first of the season. Three goals came from Cortland in the final eight minutes to force overtime which ended with the tie. This tie moves Oswego into fifth in the conference heading into another NEWHL match up against the Canton ‘Roos. Puck drop will be at 7 p.m. this Friday in the Marano Campus Center. Women’s Basketball beats Morrisville in Max Ziel Tournament

OSWEGO — Women’s Basketball beats the Morrisville Mustangs in the consolation game of the Max Ziel Women’s Basketball Tournament with a final score of 77-62. Senior Sydni Eure who tallied 27 points en route to the win. Ramatoulaye Sy would also net 27 points and tally 2 blocks. Oswego would secure the lead in the second quarter as they outscored the Mustangs 16-7. The Lakers move forward with an overall record of 1-2 and welcome SUNY Canton into the Max Ziel Gymnasium on Wednesday. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. and can be found right here on WTOP 10.

Oswego Hockey stays undefeated with win over Brockport

OSWEGO — Lakers hockey battled the Brockport Golden Eagles Friday night which resulted in a 4-1 victory for Oswego. Brockport would open the scoring a little over halfway into the first period after getting one past goalie David Richer. He would save the rest of Brockport’s shots to finish with 21 total. Jody Sullivan would tally one four minutes later as Joseph Molinaro and Chris MacMillan received the assists. The Lakers would pull away from the Golden Eagles in the second period as captain Josh Zizek would put one in within the first two minutes. Travis Broughman and Colton Fletcher would both add by the end of the second to secure the win. Joseph Molinaro was a standout as he finished with 3 assists on the night. The Lakers will look forward to tomorrow night’s trip to No. 2 Geneseo to play their fifth SUNYAC game of the campaign. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. and coverage will be provided by WNYO in the Ira S. Women’s Basketball begins 2019-2020 season with loss against UW Superior

OSWEGO — Women’s Basketball drops their first home game of the season to UW Superior Friday night. The 49-77 final featured the Yellowjackets scoring 48 points by halftime compared to the 15 by Oswego. The Laker offense would come alive in the third quarter as transfer Sydni Eure would score 10 points out of her game total 15 to bring some life back into the Lakers. The team would outscore the Yellowjackets in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough. Oswego moves forward into the Max Ziel Tournament tomorrow afternoon to play Morrisville in the consolation game. Tip off will be at 1 p.m. at Max Ziel. Men’s Hockey Preview versus SUNY Brockport

OSWEGO — Men’s Hockey will continue SUNYAC play this weekend as the Brockport Golden Eagles travel to Oswego Friday night. Both teams have 3 wins so far in conference play this season as both groups sit a top of the standings. The No. 3 ranked Lakers will hold their fourth-annual “Teddy Bear Toss” against Brockport who hasn’t won against Oswego since 2015. Travis Broughman has had a strong start to his sophomore season after tallying two goals and three assists in the three games played. Senior defenseman Carter Allen has also put up four points this campaign after getting an assist last time out against Potsdam. Coverage will start at 6:30 p.m. on WTOP 10 for Hockey Night in Oswego. Women’s Hockey wins at home versus Buffalo State

OSWEGO — Women’s Hockey returns home from a four-game road trip to play the Buffalo State Bengals which resulted in a 6-2 win to move the team to an overall record of 3-2. The Lakers were carried by Amber Thomas (2G and 3A) and Eryn Stewart (4A) offensive production that led to Oswego scoring five unanswered goals in the second and third period. The Bengals would get their second goal past Rachael Farmer as Tristin Stetson would sneak one back door towards the end of the third period. Farmer would finish with 26 saves to win her 50th career game for Oswego. The Lakers continue NEWHL play Saturday afternoon against SUNY Cortland who took a 3-2 lost to Morrisville tonight. The match up on Saturday will be Oswego’s annual United Way Food/Toy Drive that will begin at 3 p.m. in the Marano Campus Center. WTOP 10 will begin coverage at 2:30 p.m. for a pregame show before the slate.

Lakers Hockey defeat Potsdam to stay undefeated

OSWEGO — Men’s Hockey stays perfect so far this season with a commanding 8-1 win over SUNY Potsdam Saturday night. Carson Vance and Colton Fletcher started the scoring for the Lakers in the first period. The Bears would get on the scoreboard late in the second period on a powerplay rebound tally. Oswego would answer right off the faceoff at the start of the third period from a Jeff Solow shot. That would be the first of five unanswered goals to come in the rest of the period before the end of regulation. Cedric Hansen would earn the win with 20 saves in the contest. Travis Broughman would be the most notable Laker tonight with two goals and two assists. Moving forward, the Lakers host Brockport this coming Friday at the Marano Campus Center. Puck drop will be at 7 p.m.

Lakers Hockey victorious again versus Plattsburgh on Whiteout Weekend

OSWEGO — Men’s Hockey came away with a shutout victory Friday night against rivals Plattsburgh in the first game of Whiteout Weekend. The 3-0 win puts the Lakers up 2-0 in SUNYAC play while the Cardinals drop to 0-3. Senior David Richer was perfect for Oswego with 25 saves in the contest. Anthony Passero would strike first on the powerplay with Derek Brown getting the assist. Passero’s first goal of the season came halfway in the first period. The Lakers would add to the scoreboard just two minutes later as Carter Allen buried the puck that came from Josh Zizek and Jody Sullivan. The third Oswego tally came off a Travis Broughman shot that was finished by Tyler Currie on the rebound with roughly eight minutes left in the second period. Jeff Solow would also get credit with the second assist for his first point of the campaign. Oswego is back in action Saturday night against the Potsdam Bears, who are coming off a loss from SUNY Cortland. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. in the Marano Campus Center for a special Military Appreciation Night. WTOP 10 will start coverage at 6:30 p.m. with another installment of Hockey Night in Oswego.

Men’s Hockey Preview vs. SUNY Potsdam

OSWEGO — Men’s Hockey will do battle to their second opponent on Whiteout Weekend Saturday night against SUNY Potsdam. The bears began their season this past weekend with a tie against Geneseo (3) and a lost to Brockport. This coming game will be the second matchup for both teams of this weekend as Potsdam will travel to Cortland to face the Red Dragons. After sweeping the Bears last season, the Lakers look to take game one of the home and home series as they will not see Potsdam again until February. Puck drop will be at 7 p.m. at the Marano Campus Center. The game can also be found live on WTOP 10 starting at 6:30 p.m. with a Hockey Night in Oswego pregame show.

Oswego Men’s Hockey Whiteout Game Preview versus Plattsburgh

OSWEGO — Friday night at the Marano Campus Center will feature the beginning of Men’s Hockey annual Whiteout Weekend as they host rivals SUNY Plattsburgh. The Lakers look to continue their Whiteout success after shutting out the Cardinals last year. Plattsburgh comes into the match up after dropping their first two games against SUNYAC opponents Brockport and Geneseo (3). The Lakers however gained their first conference win against Cortland in their home opener this past Friday. Max Novick and Mitch Emerson were huge producers for Oswego, both putting up three points. Laker fans can get tickets at the SUNY Oswego box office or watch live at WTOP 10 starting at 6 p.m. for the pregame show. Puck drop will at 7 p.m. in front of an expected sellout crowd.

Oswego Men’s Hockey victorious against SUNY Cortland

OSWEGO — Men’s Hockey played their first game of the regular season last night at the Marano Campus Center against SUNY Cortland. The Lakers were victorious with a 6-3 win that was a source from the four unanswered goals that occurred in the second period. This Oswego surge was led by junior Max Novick as he notched two goals and an assist along with captain Josh Zizek getting two assists. #6 Oswego would hold off SUNY Cortland in the third period to start the season 1-0 in conference play. David Richer finished the night with a .888 save percentage after giving up three goals over the course of the game. Moving forward, Oswego will host SUNYAC rival Plattsburgh in the annual Whiteout game next weekend. Puck drop will be at 7 p.m. at the Marano Campus Center.

Men’s Hockey Preview versus SUNY Cortland

OSWEGO — The Men’s Hockey team will start their 2019-2020 regular season today against SUNYAC opponent Cortland. The Lakers are looking to continue their success last season versus the Red Dragons after sweeping their opponent both home and away. The most recent preseason poll has the Lakers slotted in the sixth position under Hobart (5) and Geneseo (3). After going 2-0 against Carleton Place and Nazareth in exhibition, the top story going into this season is who Ed Gosek will be starting between the pipes. Puck drop will be at 7 p.m. at the Marano Campus center. Of course WTOP10 has you covered with Hockey Night in Oswego starting at 6:30 p.m.

Men’s Hockey continues success against Nazareth

OSWEGO — The Men’s Hockey team had their last exhibition game this past Saturday against the Nazareth Golden Flyers. Oswego looked to continue their success from last time out and that occurred when Jody Sullivan scored off a dish from senior Joseph Molinaro. Both players would later team up again towards the end of the first period to finish with a goal and an assist for each. Travis Broughman and Tyler Currie would both add a goal to keep the Lakers ahead of the Golden Flyers for a 4-3 final score. Oswego starts their regular season against Cortland on Friday at the Marano Campus Center.

Women’s Hockey gets first win of the season over Williams Smith

OSWEGO — Women’s Hockey played their last exhibition game this past Saturday against Williams Smith. The Lakers got their first win of the season from a combined effort all over the ice. Rachael Farmer started in net for Oswego only allowing one goal against and sported a .900 save percentage. Oswego would tie the Herons off a goal from senior Eryn Stewart who got a pass from transfer Amber Thomas. Freshman Meg Teachout would get her first career goal in the third period and then would add later in the period to solidify the Lakers win. Tia Trovato relieved Farmer in net at the start of the third period and stayed perfect for Oswego. Heading forward Oswego will start a four-game road trip beginning in Vermont against Castleton this coming weekend.

Field Hockey finishes SUNYAC play with loss versus Geneseo

OSWEGO — Field Hockey played their final home game of the 2019 season on Saturday when they took on SUNYAC opponent Geneseo. The Knights, who came into the contest 4-0 in SUNYAC play, recorded the first two goals of the game within the first six minutes. The lone Lakers goal would come from Kacie Simzer in the third quarter before the Knights answered in the fourth to finish with a 4-1 final score. Oswego goalie Erica Scheblein recorded 20 saves which was a new career high. The Lakers finish 1-5 in conference competition and will miss the SUNYAC Championship. However, the team will finish their 2019 campaign on the road at St. John Fisher on Wednesday.

Oswego Volleyball loses both games but has strong showing

OSWEGO — Lakers Volleyball finished SUNYAC play this weekend at the Max Ziel Gymnasium that started with a match up against the Brockport Golden Eagles on Friday night. The team would battle back to eventually lose by 2 points in the fifth set. Lakers were led by Melissa Lussier (15 kills and 2 aces) and Shauna O’Flaherty (13 kills and 3 blocks) who allowed the Lakers to win set number four and force the match into set five. The following day, the Lakers battled the conference leader SUNY Geneseo in a tight four set match up. The group would lose the first two sets by only three points each to the Knights. Senior Julia Flohr (18 digs) led the Laker defense in the third set to send the match into the fourth before the Knights became victorious. This lose ends SUNYAC regulation play for Oswego, who was granted the six-seed for the SUNYAC Championship. The team will travel to Cortland on November 5th for the opening round.

Women’s Soccer finishes their 2019 Season after splitting weekend

OSWEGO — Women’s Soccer finished their 2019 season this weekend against two strong SUNYAC conference teams. The Lakers started their final home stand versus Fredonia on Friday that ended in a 2-1 victory for the Blue Devils. However, sophomore Maggie Riordan would score the lone goal for Oswego just over five minutes into the game from a Graisa Madden pass. Fredonia would later get two past goalkeeper Sophia Portalatin, one coming before the end of the half and the second immediately at the start of the next half. Portalatin would rebound the following day against Buffalo State with a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory, the first SUNYAC win of the season. Lynsey Roth would snag two goals in the match up, one on a Penalty Kick and her second off the pass from freshman Katharine Balog. The team did not qualify for the SUNYAC championships, and finished their campaign with an overall record of 3-14.
