Oswego State men’s lacrosse falls to Brockport in heart-breaking season finale

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s lacrosse team dropped their last game of the regular season on Friday, falling to the Brockport Golden Eagles 13-12. In the Friday night contest which saw the Oswego faithful pack the bleachers of Laker Turf Stadium, Brockport would go on to defeat the home team in heartbreaking fashion — scoring the game-winning goal with 34 seconds remaining in regulation.

Oswego was in a “win-and-you’re-in” scenario in regards to making the SUNYAC playoffs. Knowing this, the Lakers opened up the scoring early with Weston Gray getting his first goal of the game. Though, from there, Brockport went on to score five consecutive goals to make it a 5-1 ballgame at the end of the first quarter. To begin the second quarter, Ryan Eccles set up Gray with a nice feed which allowed him to get his second goal of the evening. Shortly after, Eccles got a goal for himself to cut the Golden Eagles lead to two. Then in a man-up opportunity, Brockport shot one past Aiden Kenyon to stretch their lead back to three goals. This is when the momentum started to shift in the Lakers favor. Spanning from 1:37 in the second quarter to 9:37 in the third, Oswego scored five unanswered goals to take a 8-6 lead. Included in these goals were Gavin Elston from Eccles, Ryan Dumont from Gray, Corey O’Connor from Elston, Max Broadman from Eccles, and Elston from Eccles.

From there, Brockport went on to score the next three goals of the game, capitalizing on several Laker turnovers and a man-up opportunity. Right before the third quarter came to a close, Owen Spearing got loose and shot a zinger past the Brockport goalie for his first goal of the year. This goal made the large Oswego crowd erupt with energy, which carried on throughout the fourth quarter. Both teams went back-and-forth throughout the final fifteen minutes of play. Elston scored once more for his 29th goal of the season, but this was followed up with a Brockport goal just 30 seconds later. At the 8:58 mark, Elston was left wide open and hit paydirt again, making it a 11-10 game in favor of the Lakers. A minute later, Cameron Tallman put another one in for Oswego to give them a two-point lead. The Golden Eagles weren’t going to go away that easy, though. Brockport capitalized on a late defensive rotation and shot one past Kenyon, bringing the deficit to one. Then at the 3:15 mark, Brockport forced a Laker turnover and found the back of the net to tie the game. Over the final three minutes of play, both teams played with a major sense of urgency and it looked like neither team would budge. However, after a Brockport timeout with 42 seconds left, Rocco Santillo beat his man with a quick face dodge and scored the Golden Eagles’ 13th goal of the night. Though, the drama and anticipation wouldn’t end there. After Oswego won the ensuing faceoff, Brockport was called for a cross check which gave the Lakers a much needed man-up opportunity. With 24 seconds left on the clock, Coach Eccles called a timeout and drew up his best play. Coming out of the timeout, Oswego wasn’t able to find a clean look, but somehow found a man right in front of the crease. However, the shot attempt was stuffed at the goal line and as the balled rolled towards the sideline, the clock ran out along with Oswego’s dwindling playoff hopes. Brockport wins 13-12.

On the night in which Oswego celebrated two seniors – Weston Gray and Tyler Scordo – the Lakers were unable to come away with a victory despite having less turnovers (21-25). With this loss, Oswego dropped to 8-6 (3-4 in conference) on the season and will just miss out on the SUNYAC playoffs as they were jumped by SUNY Oneonta. Although Oswego has a better overall record than the Red Dragons, they both finished with the same conference record, with Oneonta holding the head-to-head tie-breaker over the Lakers. As it stands, the #4 seed Oneonta Red Dragons will travel to take on the #1 seed Cortland Red Dragons on May 4. The first round will also see the #3 seed Brockport Golden Eagles face the #2 seed Geneseo Knights.

Despite the abrupt end to the 2022 season, Oswego was much improved this year, finishing with their best record since 2019 and their highest goal output in program history. As the spring season comes to a close, Oswego fans can rest assured knowing the men’s lacrosse program has a bright future ahead.

Oswego women’s lacrosse punch their way into the playoffs

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Pure domination from start to finish. That’s what I have to say about this contest. The Lakers hosted Plattsburgh Saturday in a win or go home matchup for both teams. The Lakers clearly proved that they wanted it more, winning in dominant fashion. Besides the opening face off, this game was never close. The Lakers got on the board in the opening minutes of the contest and were relentless the rest of the game. Up by five at the end of the first, this game was going just as planned for the lakers. At the end of the second Plattsburgh was down ten and the running clock was in full effect. The game was already over by halftime. Plattsburgh was able to score some pity points in the second half but the Lakers continued to dominate. The Final score was 17-6. An absolute massacre. Senior Isabella Lembo had an incredible performance in her last regular season game as a Laker. She scored a whopping seven goals in the contest. Sophomore Jullia Quirk also had an impressive performance with three goals. Logan Castiglione let all her teammates eat as she had two goals compared to her eight assists. The Lakers head to the first round of the SUNYAC championship this Tuesday. They take on SUNY Oneonta at 4 p.m on the road.

Oswego State women’s lacrosse takes setback against SUNY Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team headed on the road Wednesday to take on the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles in a SUNYAC matchup. The Lakers would fall 15-5 to the Golden Eagles to drop to 4-4 in the conference. With the win, SUNY Brockport clinches a berth to the post season with a SUNYAC record of 6-2 over the course of the 2022 campaign. Oswego State is now 5-10 in the 2022 season overall.

SUNY Brockport started off the contest with four straight goals before the Lakers found the back of the net in the 2nd quarter. Oswego State was held off the scoresheet in the 1st stanza but Sela WIley added to her season goal total and put the Lakers on the board. Madison Davis would snag the assist on the shot and the Lakers place ketchup against the Golden Eagles. However, SUNY Brockport would put 6 more goals in before the Lakers found twine once again. Wiley netted her second in the 3rd quarter to try and narrow the margin. The captain would complete the hattrick at the end of the quarter as Julia Quirk got credit for the assist. Quirk would add another goal in the final stanza and Shae McConnell put one in with 7 minutes remaining in regulation for her 29 goal of the season. Netminder Sarah Kamide made 7 saves over the course of the game and allowed 16 goals. The Lakers were out shot 32 to 19 in the contest.

Oswego State now turns their attention to Plattsburgh State this Saturday for Senior Day at Laker Turf Stadium. Oswego State sits in the final playoff spot in the SUNYAC playoffs and Plattsburgh State trails them with a conference record of 3-5. For the Lakers, it is simple, win and you are in. The Cardinals will look to steal a win on the road to force a tiebreaker at the end of the regular season. The final game of the regular season can be seen live on WTOP 10 as the Lakers face off against the Cardinals at 12:00 p.m. this Saturday on the banks of Lake Ontario.

Oswego State mens lacrosse falls in hard fought battle

OSWEGO, N.Y. – It was a back and fourth battle yesterday afternoon when the Red Dragons of Cortland made the hour and a half drive to Oswego. Cortland has had the Lakers number for a while and they looked to keep the streak going. The Lakers were hungry and were ready for a war. They found themselves battling from behind early on in the matchup when they were down three goals at the end of the first quarter. The Lakers found more success in the second, putting up four goals. Cortland was still firing on all cylinders and had a four goal lead over the Lakers heading into halftime. Freshman Max Brodman had himself a day scoring four goals on the contest, making him the lead scorer for the Lakers. Sophomore Gavin Elston had two goals on the day as well as freshman Cameron Tallman. The Lakers went goal for goal with Cortland in the third, leaving them at a four goal deficit heading into the forth. The Lakers came off firing in the fourth scoring two back to back goals at the start of the fourth. Their momentum was halted after another goal from Cortland as the final score was 16-12. Softball loses five over hard weekend matchups

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State softball team played six games over four days this weekend. A Friday double header in New Paltz against the Hawks was followed by a Saturday double header in Oneonta with the Red Dragons, the team had a day off Sunday, but played another double header at home against the Plattsburgh Cardinals Monday. 

Friday’s first game in New Paltz saw the Hawks grab an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Two two-out singles were followed by a triple, bringing that brought both runners home to open the scoring. In the bottom of the second the Hawks would strike again. A two-out double was followed by a single. A throwing error would bring home the lead runner, and another triple would bring home the other runner. No more runs would be scored until the seventh inning, where the Lakers finally found the score sheet. Two one-out singles were followed by Madison Hoeflich reaching on an error, that would score the first runner of the inning for the Lakers. Ellie Mahoney then grounded out the the Shortstop, but would bring home another run. A Samantha Morgan double brought home the third run of the inning for the Lakers, but the scoring would end there, and Oswego fell 4-3. The Lakers only had four hits on the day, no batter having more than one, and a lone walk. Freshman Maria Lutz pitched all six innings for Oswego, allowing four runs, nine hits, two walks, and striking out two.

Game two of the double header was a more convincing win for New Paltz. The Hawks scored one in the first, but Oswego would match the run the second on a Ellie Mahoney single. Errors in the bottom half of the second brought home two more runs, and a two out double in the third brought home run number four for the Hawks. The bottom of the fourth was started by a single for New Paltz which was followed by a double driving home the run. Oswego got two consecutive pop-outs after, but a single drove home the sixth run. Oswego held New Paltz scoreless in the fifth, but three runs in the sixth triggered the mercy rule, and the game ended 9-1 in favor of the Hawks. Zoe Mennig led the Lakers with two hits, and Madison Hoeflich led the Lakers with two walks. Fiona Higgins had a rough day on the mound. She allowed fifteen hits, nine runs, eight earned, and walked three, she would strike out six.

The Lakers took the two hour trip to Oneonta for the Saturday double header. The Lakers found the scoreboard in the top of the first in game one. Tai Smith led off with a walk, and she was moved to second by a sac bunt. Taylor Dubois hit a double moving Smith to third, and a fielder’s choice in the next at bat scored the run. The Lakers held the Red Dragons scoreless until the third inning, when a lead off triple would be driven in by a sac fly to tie the game. Oneonta scored once more in the fourth inning, and twice more in the fifth. In the sixth, a two out single, then stole second and was driven in by a double. Oswego wouldn’t score in the seventh, and the game ended 5-1 Oneonta. Taylor Dubois led Oswego with two hits. Tai Smith got on base three times, a hit and a team leading two walks. Maria Lutz pitched all six innings once again, allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits and no walks, striking out two.

Game two of the second double header saw Oneonta grab a big lead in the bottom of the first, scoring four. The next run wouldn’t be scored until the top of the third, when Taylor Dubois hit a lead off double and was then drive in by Zoe Mennig’s double in the next at bat. A scoreless fourth was followed by a scoreless top of the fifth, and the Red Dragons broke the scoreless streak in the bottom of the fifth, crossing the plate once. Oneonta grabbed two more in the bottom of the sixth, and the Lakers, trying to rally could only manage one in the top of the seventh, a Zoe Mennig solo shot to left, and the Red Dragons took game two, 7-2. Samantha Morgan led the Lakers, going three for three at the plate. Zoe Mennig drove in both runs for Oswego. Madison Hoeflich got the start for the Lakers, but only pitched one inning, allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits, striking out two. Chelsea Sellars pitched the remaining five innings for Oswego, allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits, and four strike outs.

The Lakers took a much needed day off Sunday, and took to the diamond for two more Monday to take on the Cardinals of Plattsburgh. The Cardinals went 1-2-3 in the top of the first, and the Lakers struck first in the bottom half. The first two batters would get out, then Taylor Dubois and Zoe Mennig would reach on errors. Fiona Higgins drove in both with a double. The second inning was scoreless, and Plattsburgh grabbed their first run in the top of the third on an error. Two more scoreless innings brought the game to the sixth, where the Cardinals struck again. The Lakers committed two errors to start the inning, allowing two runners on base. A single by the next batter loaded the bases, and another single drove in the first run of the inning, second of the game for the Cardinals. A pop out to second got out number one of the inning,  and a fly out to center got the second out, but also drove in the runner from third, for the third run of the game and the lead for Plattsburgh. Another single drove in the fourth run, and the walk that followed reloaded the bases. Another single brought home two more, and Plattsburgh got out of the inning with a 6-2 lead. Oswego wouldn’t score after the first, and lost the game. Fiona Higgins led Oswego with two hits and two RBIs. Maria Lutz pitched all seven innings, doing the whole game for the third time over the weekend. She allowed six runs, two earned, do to three errors on the Lakers. Lutz struck out four and walked three during the game

The Lakers finally turned things around in game two of the double header, and the final one of the weekend. The Lakers scored three times in the bottom of the first on hits by Zoe Mennig and Fiona Higgins. Neither team would score until Oswego did in the bottom of the fifth. Fiona Higgins drove in the fourth run for Oswego on a double, and in the next at bat, Madison Hoeflich brought in one more on a single. The Lakers scored two more in the inning on a single and a sacrifice hit, bringing their total to seven in the game. Zoe Mennig brought in one more run in the bottom of the sixth, triggering the mercy rule. Zoe Mennig went 4-4 at the plate, driving in two runs, and scoring two of her own. Fiona Higgins was the star of the day though. She went 2-3 at the plate driving in three runs, and pitched six scoreless innings, striking out six, while only allowing two hits and two walks.

The Lakers get the next three days off, until the play a double header Friday against the Brockport golden eagles at home, game one set to start at 3:00 P.M. They play their final series of the season against Geneseo at home Saturday with a double header.  The lakers now sit a 9-22 (4-10 SUNYAC). They are currently eighth in the SUNYAC, two games back of Fredonia in the six seed, the final spot in the SUNYAC playoffs.

Oswego State baseball goes 2-1 on Senior Day weekend

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State baseball team faced off against rival SUNY Brockport this weekend in a three-game series, winning the the first two contests 2-0 before dropping the final game 13-11. This was the first home series of the season for the Lakers after multiple games were either postponed or moved to a different location.

In Saturday’s Senior Day game, the Lakers celebrated a total of 12 seniors, including Ryan Enos who’s emerged as one of the best division III players in the country. However, game one of the series was mainly a battle between the pitchers — not something that was expected for these juggernaut offenses. The first five innings of the contest were scoreless with both teams combining for just four hits. It wasn’t until the sixth inning where a single from Julian Drew brought in Kyle Lauria for the Lakers first score. In the top of the seventh inning, the Golden Eagles hit one deep into center field, but Lauria tracked the ball down and made a tremendous diving catch to keep the game 1-0. Oswego carried this momentum into their next at-bat where Jacob Levine hit a double to help Blake Vandreason cross home plate. Oswego went on to win the Senior Day contest 2-0 with Jacob Sanders and Sean Dertinger allowing a total of two hits.

Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader started much the same as the first game of the series for the Lakers, retiring the first six Brockport batters. Though, unlike the prior contest, Oswego got their offense rolling early on as they took a two-run lead in the bottom of the first. Paul Tammaro, Enos, and Lauria all reached base with Ryan Weiss bringing home Enos off a single. Jacob Levine the singled opposite of Weiss to the right side, allowing Lauria to reach home plate. In the fourth inning, the Golden Eagles were in a threatening position with men on first and second. After a strikeout by Kieran Finnegan, the Lakers collected the third out of the inning on a line out to third base. Oswego was then able to shutout Brockport through the remaining innings and went on to win 2-0 once again. Finnegan moved to 5-0 on the season, allowing just three hits while facing 26 batters.

Game 2 of the Sunday doubleheader was completely night and day from the previous two games. Brockport struck first to take a 1-0 lead in the opening inning, with Oswego responding with three runs of their own in bottom of the first. After a leadoff walk by Tammaro, Enos advanced him to third with a huge double to left field. Lauria hit a sac fly to center field, which brought in Tammaro for their first run. Soon after, Ryan Weiss was walked and Enos stole third base in the process. Levine then took after Lauria and hit a sac fly to center field, bringing in Enos for the Lakers second run. After a CJ McCarthy walk, Julian Drew slung one to center field, pushing the Laker lead to 3-1. In the top of the third, Brockport cut the Oswego lead with a run of their own. After some back-and-forth stellar pitching, the Lakers put two more on the board in the fourth inning and another in the fifth, giving them a 6-2 lead. In the top of the sixth, the momentum began to swing Brockport’s way. The Golden Eagles racked up seven hits and brought in five runs to take the lead. Then in the seventh inning, Brockport put up two more runs, bringing the score to 9-6. Though, the onslaught wouldn’t stop there as the away team scored four more runs in the eighth inning to make the score 13-6. Oswego began to rally back in the final two innings, but were just able to muster five runs. Brockport took game three of the series by a score of 13-11.

Following the series, Oswego moves to 21-7 on the season and 11-1 in the SUNYAC Conference — tied for first with Cortland. The Lakers will have the chance to carry this momentum into their next game against Ithaca College before hosting Cortland at home next weekend. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday in Ithaca, NY.

Oswego State baseball hits this weekend out of the park

Tammaro1ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Oswego Lakers baseball team had quite the impressive weekend in they’re three games played. Saturday the Lakers had a double header where they sweeped SUNY Oneonta in impressive fashion. The first matchup was a 8-0 shutout with the Lakers having an answer for everything Oneonta threw their way. Senior Paul Tammaro led the charge with two runs scored on the day with two RBIs. Ryan Enos also had two runs on the day in a performance that is far from unexpected. Enos has proved to be an integral part of this Laker team. Pure domination is the only way to describe this game as Oneonta could get absolutely nothing going in this contest. Pitcher Jakob Sanders had six strikeouts on the day and only gave up one hit.

The next game was much of the same as this time only one run was scored for Oneonta, making the final score 7-1. Tammaro lead the large again in this contest as he was the lead scorer with two runs and two RBIs. Enos also had a run with two RBIs in this game. The Lakers weren’t able to get much going until late in the contest. Going into the top of the seventh, the score was 2-1 with the lakers sitting on a one point lead. They went on to score five runs in the seventh sealing this contest. They would then have one more contest with Oneonta the following day.

With Oneonta out for blood, this contest was much closer than the previous two. A slow start for the Lakers resulted in Oneonta having a three run lead early in the contest. The following inning the Lakers put up two runs when senior Ryan Weiss hit a two run homer that couldn’t have been more clutch. With the momentum back with the Lakers they began to fight 6-1 run the rest of the contest, resulting in a 8-6 victory. Weiss was the star player with three runs total and a homer on the day. The Lakers look to take this momentum into next week as they face Clarkson University at home this Tuesday in a double header. Games start at 2pm and 5pm. Catch it live on WTOP10!

Oswego State Softball picks up pair of wins in weekend doubleheader

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State softball team’s offense and pitching shined in their weekend doubleheader versus SUNY Potsdam. In the pair of weekend home games, the Lakers went on to defeat the Bears 13-3 in game one and 9-4 in game two. Oswego’s offense was on full display, scoring a combined 22 runs to earn their seventh and eighth wins on the year.

To begin game one, Potsdam got off to an early two-run lead only for Oswego to respond with a barrage of seven runs in the second. In that scoring run, Fiona Higgins hit a double to bring in Zoe Mennig for a run. Madison Hoeflich would then go on to hit a single to bring Higgins across home plate. Tai Smith’s double to left field brought in three more runs for the Lakers before Mennig returned the favor and brought Taylor Dubois home. Oswego continued their scoring onslaught in the third inning, putting three more runs on the board to take a 10-2 lead. Mattison Phinney, Samantha Morgan, and Smith all scored a run during that stretch. The Lakers struck again in the fourth inning after Maria Lutz brought one home and following a wild Potsdam pitch, Hoeflich ran in another one. Oswego led 13-2 heading into the fifth inning and with the large deficit, the Bears weren’t able to claw back. Although they scored a run in the fifth, the Lakers went on to win 13-3.

Game two started off much different with both teams failing to find any offense in the first inning. The Lakers would break the deadlock in the second inning after Phinney scored on a wild pitch. After both teams traded strikeouts in the third, Potsdam got on the board with two runs in the fourth inning. Oswego tied things up in the bottom of the fourth after Adriana Marini scored her first run of the afternoon. In the fifth inning, Dubois hit a double into center field to bring in Aleah Yaizzo and Smith. Following that, Mennig singled to right field and advanced Dubois for Oswego’s fifth run. Phinney closed out the inning with a single which helped Higgins and Mennig cross home plate. With the Lakers leading 7-2, Potsdam hit a two-run homer to decrease the deficit to three runs. In the bottom of the sixth, both Yaizzo and Dubois ran home to bring the game to 9-4. Oswego would hold on to their five-run lead by forcing Potsdam to a quick three-and-out, securing their second straight victory.

Oswego totaled 26 hits on the day with Higgins leading the team with six. The junior pitcher was great on the mound as well, finishing game two with 14 strikeouts. Smith continued her dominance in this series as she earned four hits and five RBI’s on the day. With Monday’s doubleheader versus SUNY Cobleskill being postponed, the next opportunity for the Lakers to continue their win-streak will be against Plattsburgh State on April 20. Game one is set for 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, with game two set to start at 3:00 p.m. at Laker Softball Field.

Women’s lacrosse struggles against SUNY Cortland

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team had an afternoon contest with the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons Friday. Cortland came in as the number one team in the SUNYAC, and with an undefeated program record against the Lakers, 31-0, and looked to keep both. 

The Red Dragons started hot. They got on the board just 44 seconds into the game, and kept their lead the entire contest. By the end of the firsT, SUNY Cortland had scored two more, and held a 3-0 advantage. The second period was when Cortland did a lot of their damage. They scored eight more unanswered goals, three players finding the back of the net more than once. Cortland’s Lauren Hopsicker had a second period hat trick, and Hannah Lorenzen finished the hat trick she started in the first. The Lakers would score one before the half, Logan Castiglione netting one, but the Lakers still were down 11-1 at the half. Cortland kept up the pressure in the second half, scoring three more times in the third period to extend their advantage to 14-1. The Red Dragon’s scored twice more before the Lakers would answer in the fourth, but the fourth is when the Lakers found a little momentum. With just under eight minutes to go, Cortland got a penalty, and Oswego would capitalize. Isabella Lembo scored on the man-up advantage, for Oswego’s second, just nine seconds into the penalty. Lembo scored again just three minutes later for Oswego’s third, Castiglione tallying assists on both goals. The Red Dragons answered with one final goal, their seventeen of the game. Oswego would grab one more consolation goal, Shae McConnell scoring, assisted by Madison Davis. Oswego couldn’t match Cortland’s offensive prowess, and lost 17-4. Lembo scored twice for the Lakers and Castiglione had three points. A tough day between the pipes for Sarah Kamide, allowing 17 goals on 27 shots. For SUNY Cortland, five players had more than two goals, and three had more than four points.

The Lakers next matchup comes against SUNY Potsdam on Saturday April, 23. They now have a 4-9 (3-3 SUNYAC) record. They sit fifth in the SUNYAC with three games to go before the playoffs.

Baseball sweeps with massive offensive output, loses series finale with Rochester

Oswego, N.Y. — The Oswego State baseball team took to the road to take on the Plattsburgh Cardinals for a three game set Monday and Tuesday, and had a their first home game Wednesday against the University of Rochester. The Lakers were coming off two non-conference losses, but were ready to turn it around and stay undefeated in SUNYAC play and avenge their loss to Rochester last week.  

The first game of Monday’s double header saw the Lakers take an early commanding lead. The Lakers grabbed two runs before an out was made, a third run cross the plate before the second out, and a Tishawn Featherstone three run shot saw the top of the first end 6-0. Kyle Lauria got his second RBI of the game in the second inning, with Lukas Olsson driving one of his own for runs seven and eight of the game. The Lakers had three more runs in the third and led 11-0. A scoreless fourth was followed by Oswego getting one more in the fifth, and the Cardinals finally answering with one of their own in the bottom half. In the sixth, Tishawn Featherstone got his second home run of the game, a solo shot, Ryan Enos drove in two more with a double, and Kyle Lauria hit a two run homer to give the Lakers a 17-1 lead. The seventh inning was when the Cardinals finally found their stride, scoring five of their six in the game. The Lakers got two more in the top of the ninth, and won the game 19-6. Anthony Van Fossen pitched five innings, striking out six in the game. Kyle Lauria had a game high five RBI’s and five hits in the game.

Game two of the double header saw Plattsburgh find the scoreboard first. A scoreless first inning and top of the second was followed by the Cardinals grabbing two runs in the bottom half. Oswego would answer with one in the third inning. The fourth was when Oswego finally found the lead. With the bases loaded, Ryan Enos would reach on a fielders choice and one run would score and tie the game. A Kyle Lauria single to right would score the leading run. A double steal with Lauria and Enos saw Lauria get second and Enos steal home. The Lakers left the inning with a 4-2 lead. The fifth and sixth innings were scoreless. In the top of the seventh, the Lakers grabbed four more runs, and the Lakers won 8-2. Kieran Finnegan pitched all seven innings for Oswego, striking out 10, with only five hits and one walk. Kyle Lauria again led the Lakers in RBIs with three, with Ryan Enos, Paul Tammaro, and Tishawn Featherstone each scoring two runs.

The final game of the series was played on Tuesday. The first inning was again scoreless. Oswego got their first three runs of the game in the second, with Plattsburgh answering with one of their own. The third was led off with a CJ McCarthy solo shot, and Paul Tammaro would drive on the Lakers fifth later in the inning. Oswego got one more in the fourth, Kyle Lauria scoring on a wild pitch. The Cardinals crossed the plate for the second time in the bottom of the fifth, but Ryan Weiss would drive in two more for the Lakers in the sixth to extend their lead to 8-2. The Cardinals got three in the bottom of the seventh, but once again Oswego answered the following frame, scoring nine in the top of the eighth to extend the lead to 17-5, which would be the final score of the game. Ryan Weiss was the Lakers RBI leader with four, as well as leading the team in hits with four. Tyler Pecchia started the game for the Lakers, going four inning, striking out, allowing four hits, and one unearned run. He was relieved by Connor VanDreason, who went two innings in relief, and got the win for the game.

A Wednesday afternoon set with the University of Rochester Yellowjackets was game four of a busy week for the Lakers. The second and final matchup of the year between the two sides saw Rochester get on the board before the Lakers could even get an at bat. A leadoff home run got the Yellowjackets on the board early. A two-out single later in the inning drove in two more, and Rochester had a 3-0 lead after just half an inning. In the bottom of the second, a Julien Drew single brought home CJ McCarthy and got the Lakers on the board. Innings three through five were scoreless, and in the top the sixth, Rochester found the scoreboard once more. An error in right allowed a runner to score from third, and Rochester had a 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Lakers would strike for two more and bring the game to 4-3. The eighth was scoreless, and the game would be called before the ninth due to lightning. Ryan Enos led the Lakers with two hits and two RBIs, CJ McCarthy drew two walks in the game and got a hit. Sean Dertinger started the game for Oswego, going five innings, allowing four runs three earned, striking out four, walking two, and giving up five hits. The Laker bullpen shut down the Yellow Jackets, only allowing one hit after the fifth.

Oswego now has a 16-6 (5-0 SUNYAC) record. They are the 21st ranked team in the country. They have a three game set with the Oneonta Red Dragons in Oneonta starting Friday with a double header.

Oswego State men’s hockey announces 2022-23 leadership group

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team announced on Sunday, April 10th the 2022-23 leadership group for the team. The Lakers will return for their 56th season in the fall and three current Lakers will be the core leadership to lead the squad into battle. Ryan Bunka will return using his extra year of eligibility due to COVID-19 to be the captain of the 2022-23 team. The defenseman from Unionville, Ontario, Canada has played three seasons for the Lakers and missed the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19 canceling the campaign. Bunka has 36 games played with 3 goals and 6 assists over the course of his career at Oswego State. The left handed defenseman only missed 2 games this past season and was an essential part of the defensive core on the second pairing. The Laker finished +16 in the plus/minus column at the end of the year, the best out of any Oswego State player.

In the assistant captain roles, defenseman Troy Robillard and forward Alex DiCarlo will get the A on the jersey for next season. DiCarlo has been with the program since his freshman year back in the 2019-20 season. The Ontario native started his freshman campaign as a healthy scratch before becoming a key part of the offensive core by the end of the season. During his sophomore season, DiCarlo returned from the COVID-19 break and continued his dominance in the SUNYAC conference. In 26 games played, the Laker tallied 14 goals and 12 assists for 26 points. The point per game player did not miss a game this season and set career high stats in both the goal and assist column.

The other assistant captain transferred to Oswego State from the NCAA Division I program out of Anchorage, Alaska. Robillard established himself as a key addition to the defensive team after playing 23 games this past season. The defenseman finished with 4 goals and 3 assists after his first season in green and gold. One of those goals was a game winner in the Teal Night game against SUNY Cortland back during the fall semester. The junior will return for his senior year at Oswego State.

The Lakers are looking ahead to the summer months and the key part of the season, the offseason. Oswego State has one game announced so far for the 2022-23 season that is publicly known. The Utica College Pioneers released on twitter the date of their Teddy Bear Toss game for next season. Oswego State will travel to Utica on December 3rd for a 7:00 p.m. puck drop. Oswego State men’s lacrosse extends win streak to seven, first time since 2012

OSWEGO, N.Y. — In the first ever meeting between the two programs, the Oswego State men’s lacrosse team defeated New Paltz 18-10 on Friday. With this victory, the Lakers extend their win-streak to seven games, their longest since the 2012 season.

It was another dominant offensive display from the Lakers, one that fans have been accustomed to seeing during this seven-game stretch. Oswego notched one on the board first with Corey O’Connor assisting Max Brodman, giving the home team an early lead. Shortly after, Lakers leading goal scorer Gavin Elston found the back of the net for his first goal of the afternoon. Following the Hawks first goal of the contest, Ryan Eccles set up Elston twice in less than a minute to put Oswego up 4-1. New Paltz would go onto score once more, but throughout the final 3:42 in the opening quarter, the duo of Eccles and Elston continued their stellar performance and put in two more goals. The Lakers went into the second quarter with a 6-2 lead, but O’Connor quickly extended the lead after gaining the opening draw control. Though, over the next seven minutes, New Paltz scored four unanswered goals. Eventually, Eccles found the back of the net for his second goal of the game, but the Hawks would go on to score with 22 seconds remaining in the quarter. Oswego went into halftime leading 8-7.

After being shut out in the third quarter by Potsdam earlier in the week, Oswego completely flipped the script in this game. Elston picked up his 23rd goal of the season off a Brodman assist with 13:31 on the clock. Three minutes later, Eccles got his hat-trick off another Brodman assist. Over the final ten minute of the third quarter, not only did Oswego continue hold New Paltz scoreless, but Brodman, Weston Gray, and Ryan Dumont all scored to make the score 13-7. This run virtually put the game out of reach for the Hawks as they could not go on a run to tie the game after this point. Both team went goal-for-goal to open up the final quarter, with Max Brodman collecting another two goals. He would go on to complete his hat-trick to give the Lakers a 16-9 lead with 6:16 left in regulation. New Paltz went on to score once more, but it wouldn’t be enough to overcome the large deficit. Oswego closed out the game with Liam Sexton scoring two fancy goals including a beautiful behind-the-back shot. The Lakers went on to win 18-10 and secured their third SUNYAC win of the season.

Not only was this the seventh straight win for the Lakers, it also marked the fifth straight game in which Oswego put up at least 18 points. Oswego was extremely efficient on offense throughout the day as they had a total of 11 player record at least one point. The team was well-rounded in other aspects of the game as well. The Lakers won more faceoffs (16-14), collected more ground balls (34-20), and had less turnovers (15-27). With this win, Oswego is now tied for first place in the SUNYAC with Cortland and Geneseo. The Lakers will have the opportunity to knock off at least one of those teams this week as they take on Geneseo under the lights. Faceoff is set for 7:00 p.m. on Friday at Geneseo.

Oswego State women’s lacrosse suffers big loss against SUNY Geneseo

Lembo_1_finalOSWEGO N.Y. — It was a rough Wednesday evening for the Lakers as they couldn’t get anything to click on Laker Turf Stadium. The Lakers took on a very good Geneseo team and at the end of the day, simply got outplayed. With the score after the first quarter being seven to two, the chances for a Laker comeback already looked slim. Oswego’s star players Sela Wiley and Shae McConnell were not able to get anything going in this contest, with McConnell only coming out with one goal and Wiley being scoreless on the day. Sophomore Isabella Lembo was able to shine in this contest with two goals out of the six that were scored. This made her the lead scorer on the night. The Lakers look to recover from this tough loss when they host SUNY New Paltz at 12 p.m. this Saturday. Catch it live on WTOP10!

Oswego State men’s lacrosse dominates to earn sixth straight win

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s lacrosse team earned their sixth straight victory on Tuesday, defeating SUNY Potsdam 22-18. In the high scoring contest, Oswego had a total of 10 players record goals with seven of them having multiple.

Oswego got out of the gates early and within a minute of play, Corey O’Connor scored on an unassisted goal after the faceoff win. Potsdam responded with their first goal at the 12:36 mark and followed that up with another two goals just three minutes later. The Ryan-to-Ryan connection was on display once again as Ryan Eccles set up Ryan Dumont for a goal, bringing the deficit to within one. Shortly after, Gavin Elston picked up his 19th goal of the season to tie the game. From this point forward, the Lakers would begin to blow things open as they went on a six-goal scoring run to close the quarter up 9-3. 28 seconds into the second quarter, O’Connor found the back of the net for another Laker goal. A minute later, Max Brodman scored his fifth goal of the season to extend the lead to 11-3. Elston went on to score once more before Potsdam responded with a goal to make the score 12-4. After some back-and-forth scoring runs by both teams, the Lakers went into halftime leading 17-7.

Potsdam started to creep back into the game throughout the third quarter. After a tremendous defensive performance, the Bears held Oswego scoreless throughout the frame, halting their otherwise impressive scoring run. Potsdam put in five unanswered goals to bring the game to 17-12 heading into the final 15 minutes. Just 45 seconds into the quarter, Potsdam extended their scoring run. Though, Tyler Stevenson got the Lakers back on the board to push their lead to 18-13. Much like Gavin Elston did earlier in the contest, Weston Gray tallied his 19th goal of the year to make it 19-13. Both teams continued to put points up on the board with Oswego leading 21-17 with two minutes remaining in regulation. Over the final few runs, Eccles scored the dagger for the Lakers 22nd goal of the game. Potsdam scored another goal, but Oswego held strong defensively and went on to win 22-18.

The Lakers were dominant in the faceoff and ground ball battles, winning them 33-8 and 44-26 respectively. Though, Oswego were prone to mistakes throughout the ballgame as they totaled 23 turnovers. Coach Eccles’ offense was explosive once again as he saw Corey O’Connor (4), Liam Sexton (4), and Gavin Elston (3) all have hat-tricks. Although the team made some mistakes, they were able to come away with a hard-fought victory against a tough Potsdam squad. Oswego will have the opportunity to extend their win streak to seven as the take on New Paltz on Saturday for the first time in program history. Faceoff is set for 3:00 p.m. at Laker Turf Stadium.

Oswego State men’s lacrosse rolls through Plattsburgh State

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s lacrosse team traveled to North Country on Saturday to take on the Plattsburgh State Cardinals for a SUNYAC conference match up. Oswego State defeated the Cardinals by a score of 19-7 and improves to an overall record of 6-2 in the 2022 season. The Lakers are also 1-0 in conference play and are on the five game winning streak heading into another conference game on Tuesday.

Oswego State opened up the scoring in the first quarter which ended with a 6-0 lead for the Lakers. The Cardinals would tally three in the second quarter but Oswego State answered with another five goals. Ryan Eccles lead the offense with four goals and attacked Weston Gray tallied three goals and one assist. In the faceoff circle, Logan Prescott went 16 for 25 against the Cardinals.

In-between the pipes, starter Aiden Kenyon and back up Jeff Kinyoun combined for 7 goals against and 12 saves. Kenyon would pick up the win after playing over 50 minutes in net and Kinyoun taking over to finish up the contest. The tandem from Plattsburgh combined for 19 goals against and 14 total saves.

Oswego State turns their attention to SUNY Potsdam Tuesday afternoon at Laker Turf Stadium. The Lakers are on a four game win streak against the Bears and have an overall record of 26-15-0 against the SUNY Potsdam program. These two teams played back on April 10th, 2019 at SUNY Potsdam and the Lakers took the win 11-9. The game is set to start at 4:00 p.m. on SUNY Oswego’s campus as the Lakers look to stay undefeated in conference play so far this season.

Baseball opens SUNYAC play with weekend series sweep

Endwell N.Y. — The Oswego State baseball team took to the road this weekend to take on the New Paltz Hawks for a three game set to open their SUNYAC play. They played two games Saturday, winning both, and took the series topper on Sunday. Saturday’s first game saw the Hawks grab an early 2-0 lead. A lead of single and then a one out walk got two men on the base paths, a two out double drove both runs home. The Lakers finally found their swings in the third inning. Back to back one out doubles saw the Lakers grab their first run of the inning. After a fly out, an error on the Hawks saw the second runner get home. A walk followed by a single and another walk saw the Lakers load the bases, and then Julien Drew would send them all home with a grand slam. They Lakers ended the inning with the lead 6-2. The next inning saw the Lakers put three more on the score board. A lead off double, followed by walk and single saw the Lakers load the bases for the second inning in a row. Julien Drew would come back up to the plate with two out and this time hit a double to drive in three, his fifth, sixth, and seventh RBI’s of the day. In the fifth Ryan Enos would drive out his sixth homer of the season, this one a two run shot, to put the Lakers up 11-2. Oswego got another run in the sixth. In the seventh the Lakers would hit another two run shot and drive in a third to put the lead to 13, 15-2. Oswego’s staters, Anthony Van Fossen, was relieved to start the eighth, he gave up six hits, two runs, and walked three. With Van Fossen out of the game, New Paltz found a grove. Back to back singles, followed by a single loaded the bases with none out in the inning. A fielder’s choice at third saw one run cross the plate, and left men at first and second. Another fielders choice saw the Hawks have men at first and third with two outs. A single scored one, and that was followed by bunt to load the bases. A passed ball saw their fifth run score, and a wild pitched scored their sixth. No runs would be scored for the rest of the game and Oswego won, 15-6. Oswego finished the game with 20 hits, six doubles, and three homeruns. 

Game two of the double header was a the exact opposite of game one. The Lakers were the first to find the scoreboard. Paul Tammaro led off with a walk for the Lakers. New Paltz got two outs, but Tammaro stole second and third in the process, he scored on single. Both teams went scoreless on through the top of the fifth. In the bottom half, Ryan Enos led off with a walk, he moved to second on a Kyle Lauria single, and scored on Lukas Olsson double to left, for the Lakers second run. The Lakers held the Hawks scoreless over the final two innings and won 2-0 in the seven inning bout. The Lakers were held to four hits, but walked six times. Paul Tammaro stole four bases in the game. New Paltz was held to three singles and a lone walk in the game.

The third game of the series was played Sunday. The Lakers grabbed the early lead again in this game. A Ryan Enos single in the bottom of the first followed by a Kyle Lauria walk brought Lukas Olsson to the plate. He smacked a double into left and drove in both runners for the 2-0 lead. A one-two-three top of the second was followed by a lead off double by Jacob Levine in the bottom half. A single moved him to third, and he scored on a double-play. The Lakers kept their momentum going and Paul Tammaro singled with two outs. He moved to third on an error, and Enos walked to have runners at first and third. Lauria tripled driving in both, and he then scored on an Olsson single. Oswego left the inning up 6-0. New Paltz grabbed one in the third, but Oswego answered with one of their in the bottom half. A scoreless fourth was followed by a five run fifth for the Lakers, a CJ McCarthy three run shot, and a Lauria two run single. Oswego also got one in the sixth, a lead off solo homer by Sam Allen. The Hawks got their second run in the top of the seventh. New Paltz got one in the top of the eight, and in the bottom of the eight, Oswego grabbed one more too. The game ended with Oswego winning 14-3. Oswego had 18 hits and seven walks in the game. Kyle Lauria led the team with four RBIs, with Lukas Olsson and CJ McCarthy both having three.

The Lakers now have a 13-3 (3-0 SUNYAC) record. They are currently 20th in the national poll. Their next game is Wednesday against St. John Fisher in Rochester, and that’s followed by three game set with the Plattsburgh Cardinals on Friday and Saturday.

Oswego women’s lacrosse loses in nail biter

ONEONTA, N.Y. — It was a hard fought battle between the Lakers and Oneonta that ultimately resulted in a loss for the Lakers. This SUNYAC matchup featured two teams who were very hungry to get a victory, Oneonta had a significantly better start early on as they went up 5-2 in the first quarter. The Lakers were not out of it this early as they managed to stay in it for the entirety of the contest. The second  half was more of the same as Oneonta outscored the Lakers 5-3 to go up by five points. The third quarter is when the tide started change and the Lakers began to make a comeback. The lead scorers for the Lakers were sophomore Sela Wiley with an incredible seven goals and and sophomore Shae McConnell with five. Both of these women have been on an absolute tear this season and have been the lead scorers in almost every game. It was crunch time in the fourth as the lakers were still down by two points. Despite a great effort the Lakers would ultimately lose by four goals as Oneonta sealed the victory. The Lakers look to get back on track as they take on the Geneseo Knights April 6th at Laker Turf Stadium. Game Starts at 4:00pm on WTOP10!

Oswego State softball splits in weekend double-header

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Oswego State softball team split a road double-header against Buffalo State this weekend. Oswego defeated the Bengals 3-2 in the first seven-inning game, but fell 13-4 in the following five-inning game. The Lakers had a total of eight players record hits, including Zoe Mennig and Aleah Yaizzo who each had three on the day.

The first contest was a thriller that saw Oswego open things up with a RBI double from Tai Smith, giving the Lakers an early 1-0 lead. Though, Buffalo State answered immediately, scoring two runs of their own in the second inning. Mennig later gave the momentum back to the Lakers as she tied the game with a solo home run in the fourth frame. The game remained knotted up until the sixth inning where Taylor Dubois hit a clutch single, allowing Menning to score on her second run of the game. Oswego finished the seventh inning off strong and pulled away with a 3-2 victory heading into the next game. Fiona Higgins continued her stellar season, picking up 10 strikeouts in the contest.

Oswego opened game the second match off strong, scoring three runs in the first inning courtesy of Mennig, Yaizzo, and Mattison Phinney. Though, much like the previous contest, Buffalo State responded quickly as they tied the game 3-3 in the second inning. This was the closest the game would be from there on out as the very next inning saw the Bengals add five more runs to their tally, taking a 8-3 lead. Buffalo repeated their third inning performance in the fourth, piling on another five runs. Although Zoe Mennig crossed home plate once more in the fifth and final inning, Oswego was unable to overcome the large deficit. Buffalo State went on to win 13-4.

Following the double-header, Oswego moves to 4-9 on the season and sits in a four-team tie for fourth place in the SUNYAC conference. The Lakers will have the opportunity to build upon these string of games as the faceoff with SUNY Fredonia in a Monday afternoon double-header. Game 1 is set for 3:00 p.m. while game 2 is slated for a 5:00 p.m. start at Fredonia.

Oswego women’s lacrosse with a statement victory over Fredonia this weekend

The Oswego Lakers women’s lacrosse dealt out a brutal beating in their matchup against Fredonia Saturday. This dominant victory showcased the Lakers ability to perform and cleanly handle their opponents. When it was all said and done the Lakers walked out with a 19-4 W. This was the perfect way for them to kick off their SUNYAC play. The Lakers had a lightning fast start scoring six goals in the first quarter to Fredonia’s two. This would set the tone for the rest of the game. Junior Sela Wiley had a stellar performance as usual, scoring five goals and one assist. Sophomore Shae Mcconnell also had five goals in this contest. Despite Fredonia’s efforts to gain some momentum, the Lakers handled them easily as this contest was pretty much over by halftime. The Lakers look to keep these impressive performances up as they head to SUNY Oneonta Saturday at 3:00!

Oswego State men’s lacrosse extends win-streak to four

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s lacrosse team defeated Utica 18-8 on Wednesday, earning their fourth straight victory. This also marks the Lakers second-straight game with a double-digit margin-of-victory.

Oswego started the game off strong, going up 1-0 off a Weston Gray goal with 11:52 remaining in the opening quarter. Just two minutes later, sophomore Ryan Eccles scored his first of many goals throughout the contest to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead. After some back-and-forth runs, Gray scored two consecutive goals, earning a hat-trick less than 10 minutes into the game. Utica responded with their first goal at the 4:52 mark, but quarter ended with the Lakers up 5-1 after Gavin Elson found the back of the net. Oswego’s scoring onslaught wouldn’t stop there, however, as the Lakers netted nine unanswered goals over the next 20 minutes of regulation. During that stretch, Eccles, Gray, and Elston continued to explode offensively along with Ryan Dumont who got on the board at the 11:23 mark of the third quarter. Oswego went up 14-1 at one point before the Pioneers responded, scoring on back-to-back opportunities. However, the Lakers kept their foot on the gas as they netted another three goals to take a 14-point lead, their largest of the game. Utica won the fourth quarter, outscoring Oswego 5-1, but it simply wasn’t enough to overcome the big deficit. The Oswego State men’s lacrosse team won 18-8 and improved their record to 5-2 on the season.

Oswego had a total of seven players score against Utica, including five-goal performances from Weston Gray and Ryan Eccles and a four-goal outing from Gavin Elston. Although, their offensive efficiency came as a direct result of great ball movement. The Lakers had three player total multiple assists including Corey O’Connor (4), Liam Sexton (4), and Max Brodman (3). Oswego State played tremendous defense too as they caused 31 turnovers and held Utica to just 26 shots. Following this victory, Oswego is now tied for first place in the SUNYAC with SUNY Brockport. With SUNY Potsdam coming to town on Sunday, the Lakers will look to extend their win streak to five, which would match their longest win streak since 2018. Faceoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at Laker Turf Stadium.

Oswego women’s lacrosse falls short in tough battle

OSWEGO, N.Y. — Despite a great showing on Laker Turf Arena, the Lakers women’s lacrosse team couldn’t get the job done in their game against the Golden Flyers of Nazareth. The Golden Flyers were off to a wild star scoring the first three goals of the game. With three minutes left in the first, sophomore Julia Quirk and junior Sela Wiley both found success to narrow it down to a one goal deficit. The second quarter was back and forth action ultimately ending with the Golden Flyers taking a 6-5 lead at the half. It was a rough third quarter for the Lakers as the Golden Flyers scored six unanswered goals to bring the lead up to seven. The Lakers were not giving up just yet as they were able to score five more goals in a comeback attempt, ultimately losing by just four. The lead scorers for the Lakers were sophomore Julia Quirk with four goals and Junior Sela Wiley with three. The Lakers look to bounce back from this loss when they head to Lake Ontario Thursday to take on the Fredonia Blue Devils in a SUNYAC matchup. Game starts at 1:00!

Men’s basketball season comes to an end in wire to wire matchup

MARIETTA O.H. — A historic season by the Oswego State men’s basketball team came to end Friday night in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Division 3 tournament. After winning the first two rounds in Swarthmore, the team was sent to Marietta, Ohio to take on the the Marietta College Pioneers, the hosts of the new pod. A matchup between two top 25 ranked teams, Marietta number two and Oswego number 17, was set to be a tough one for both sides.

The Lakers got on the board first from an Ahkee Anderson three. The Lakers were the ones hitting their shots early, and just five minutes in they held an 8-2 lead. It didn’t take Marietta long to find their stride and by the ten minute mark it was only a 16-15 lead for Oswego. The teams went back and forth draining baskets, and Marietta grabbed their first lead of the game, 22-21, just under the eight minute mark. The Pioneers would then went on a 14-6 run over the next five minutes to grab a nine point lead. The Lakers closed the lead to four with 36 second to go on a Jeremiah Sparks three, but Marietta’s Lukas Isaly hit a three with six second to go to give the Pioneers a seven point lead, 43-36, into the halftime break. Oswego came out of the locker rooms hot. A Devin Green three got the half started, and they grabbed a 47-46 lead with 15 minutes remaining. The Lakers kept pushing and just a minute and a half later they led 56-47, a 20-4 run coming out of the half. Marietta went on a run of their own, 11-2, to tie the game at 58, with eight minutes to play, and then grabbed a 64-61 lead on a Tim Kreeger layup and one with six minutes in the game. Devin Green hit a three with five to go to give Oswego their final lead of the game, 66-65. Marietta kept hitting their shots, and extended the lead to 10, 78-68, with a 1:48 to go. The Lakers got as close as five on three straight free throw makes from Green, 80-75, but the Pioneers weren’t letting the lead slip away and they moved on the Elite Eight 89-81. Devin Green was the Laker’s leader with 22 points tying his season high, he was 5-10 from three and 7-13 overall. Jeremiah Sparks added 19 points and Ahkee Anderson had 12 to go with six assists. Jamal Achille and Brendon Mulson had seven and six rebounds respectively to lead the team. Marietta’s Jason Ellis had had 28 points, with Lukas Isaly and Tim Kreeger both contributing 17. Marietta moves on to take on Christopher Newport University in the Elite Eight. 

Oswego’s season comes to an end with a record of 27-3, a school record for wins in a season. They clinched their eighth SUNYAC Championship and fifth since the 2011-12 season. They claimed their sixth appearance in the NCAA tournament, and their third sweet sixteen appearance, the farthest the team has ever gotten (2016, 2019). Devin Green was the Lakers overall scoring leader at 12.2 points per game, with Jeremiah Sparks (11.8) and Julien Crittendon (10.5) the other to Lakers above 10 ppg. Green (5.7), Sparks (5.5), Brendon Mulson (5.5), and Christian Simmons (5.3) all averaged over five rebounds per games, with Jamal Achille averaging 4.4. Ahkee Anderson ran the point for Oswego most of the season and he led the team in assists per game at 3.0 as a freshman, also contributing 8.4 points. The Lakers are seeing seven seniors graduate, Forward Brendon Mulson, Forward Christian Simmons, Guard Eric Sanfilippo, Forward Jordan Brown, Forward Hunter Cole, Guard Julien Crittendon, and Center Louis Fedullo.

Men’s Basketball takes pod, moves on to sweet sixteen

SWARTHMORE P.A. — The Oswego State Men’s basketball team took the the road last weekend to Swarthmore, Pennsylvania for the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament. After Monday’s selection show it was announced that they would play Hood College of Frederick, Maryland in the first round, with the winner moving on to take on the winner of Swarthmore and Keene State of New Hampshire. 

Oswego and Hood were the second game in the entire tournament to tip off, with the time set for 3:05 Friday afternoon. Jamal Achille started the scoring for both sides with an early three, but that was quickly followed by six straight points from Hood for an early 6-3 lead. The two sides kept it close throughout the early part of the first half, but the three point barrage from Hood’s Evan Wang saw them grab a nine point advantage, 25-16, with nine to play. The Lakers then found their stride, an 18-2 run to end the half saw them go to the locker rooms up 34-27. Evan Wang had 18 of Hood’s 27 in the first half. The teams traded baskets to start the second half, with Oswego extending their lead to just ten, 47-37 with just under 14 minutes to play. Hood then went on a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to five, and after a made Oswego basket, hit a three to cut it to four. Then the Laker’s hit their stride again, a 14-2 run saw the lead jump to 66-50 with seven and a half minutes to play. Hood fought the rest of the game, but the lead never dropped below nine for Oswego, and the Lakers moved on to the round of thirty-two with a 82-73 victory. Jamal Achille led Oswego with 20 point and 12 rebounds, nine of them offensive. Four other Lakers had nine or better in the points column, Devin Green (17), Jeremiah Sparks (10), Brendon Mulson (9), and Julien Crittendon (9). Evan Wang (21) came in second in points for Hood to his twin brother Mason Wang (23).

Keene State won the other matchup in the pod over hosts Swarthmore, so the two sides met Saturday afternoon for a chance to move into the sweet sixteen. Jamal Achille picked up where he left off and scored nine points in the first six minutes, with Ahkee Anderson contributing four, to give the Lakers a 13-10 lead. Devin Green found his scoring stride, scoring seven of Oswego’s next 12  to give them a 25-14 lead with seven to go in the half. The Lakers kept pushing, and by halftime they led 48-28. Jamal Achille and Christian Simmons each had 13 in the half, with Anderson and Green both having nine. Keene State was led by Octavio Brito who had 12. Jamal Achille hit the twenty point mark with 15 still to play on a two-handed slam down low, and Oswego had a 57-32 lead. Keene State then went on a 19-9 run to close the gap to 15 with just under eight minutes in the game. Keene State cut the lead to 13 with 5:10 to go. Oswego hit a couple of shots to push the lead back to 18, and then both sides went scoreless for a little over two minutes. Hunter Cole had five of Oswego’s last seven in the final minute of play, and Oswego moved on with another win, 84-63. Jamal Achille again led the team, this time with 22, and Ahkee Anderson had his season high with 17. Christian Simmons added 16 of his own off the bench, and Devin Green had 11 to close out the Lakers in double digit scoring. Octavio Brito led Keene State in scoring with 24, and Mason Jean-Baptiste had 19, no other players had over 5 five points.

The Lakers and their fifth ranked defense now head to Marietta, Ohio to take on the Marietta Pioneers in the sweet sixteen. Marietta hosted the first two rounds of play as well, beating Madaille College 91-79 in the first round and the University of Rochester 88-83 in the second round. Marietta is led by 17.3 point-per-game scorer, senior guard Jason Ellis, who had 25 in the first round, but was held to only 10 in the second. Their second leading scorer is senior guard Lukas Isaly who averages 15.3, he had 15 in the first round, and had a game high 33 vs Rochester. They also have two other ten plus point scorers in seniors Tim Kreeger and Mason Lydic, who average 11.8 and 10.8 respectively. Marietta is 20th in the country in team scoring at 84.7 points per game. The winner of this matchup plays the winner of Christopher Newport University of Newport News, Virginia and Stockton University of Galloway Township, New Jersey.

Oswego State women’s lacrosse falls to Utica in overtime

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team was defeated in their home-opener Saturday, falling to Utica in a 11-10 overtime contest. Despite a valiant comeback, the Pioneers capitalized on a controversial ricochet goal to drop the Lakers to 0-3.

Both teams traded early goals to begin the opening quarter. Julia Quirk put the Lakers up 1-0 just 44 seconds into the game, but that lead didn’t last long. 25 seconds later, the Pioneers answered with their first goal which tied the game at one apiece. After some back-and-forth play, Utica netted four goals within four minutes to give them a 5-1 lead. Before the frame ended, Sela Wiley kept her hot streak going and scored her first goal of the game. To begin the second quarter, Oswego scored back-to-back goals courtesy of Quirk and Madison Davis. Though, to close out the quarter, Utica added three more goals to take a 8-4 lead going into halftime.

Three minutes into the second half, Quirk put in her third goal of the contest which brought the deficit to three. Seven minutes later, Shae McConnell netted another goal on a free position shot. Shortly after on a woman-down possession, Utica scored again to make it 9-6. With two minutes remaining in the stanza, McConnell added another free position goal to bring the deficit to two heading into final period. Needing a strong finish to comeback in the game, the Lakers provided in the clutch. The first 13 minutes of the quarter saw Madison Davis tally her second goal of the afternoon and Shae McConnell put in another two goals. However, with 1:52 remaining in regulations, the Pioneers cashed in on a free position goal to tie the game 10-10. Neither team would score from there on out, which brought the game to overtime. The Lakers won the initial draw control behind Julia Quirk, but their shot went wide and Utica gained possession. With a player off due to penalty, the Pioneers hit the game-winner off a clear attempt. Although the shot would be discussed at volume by the officials due to Utica having seven players in the offensive zone, the away team was awarded the goal, ending the game.

Oswego saw six players total points in the contest including McConnell (6), Quirk (3), Davis (2), Wiley (2), Logan Castiglione (1), and Madison Green (1). With this loss, Oswego State drops to 0-3 to start the season despite a fierce offensive prowess. With their first win of the season still ahead of them, the Lakers will have the opportunity to get it as they take on St. Lawrence on Tuesday, March 8. Face-off is set for 4:00 p.m. at Canton.

Oswego State women’s lacrosse takes on Utica College

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team will host their first home game of the 2022 season today at Laker Turf Stadium. Nonconference opponent Utica College will travel down Interstate 90 to take on Oswego State for the first time since the 2019 season.

The Lakers start off their season 0-2 after dropping nonconference contests to nationally ranked Williams Smith and Clarkson University. The offense is once again led by veteran Sela Wiley who has four goals and one assist. The captain leads the team in points heading into the third game of the season. Newcomer Madison Davis has three goals in two games played for Oswego State after starting the season red hot and earning SUNYAC Offensive Player of the Week honors. In between the pipes, freshman Sarah Kamide has played every minute for the Lakers. The netminder has given up 29 goals and averages 14.50 per game. With 26 total saves through two games played, the Laker post a save percentage of .473. Currently, the Lakers are getting outscored 12 to 29 against opponents this season. Oswego State has also averaged less shots per game compared to their opponents with a stat line of 17.5 per contest.

On the other side of the field, the Utica College Pioneers kick off their 2022 season with this contest against Oswego State. Last year, the Pioneers were 9-6 and 4-2 in Empire 8 conference play. The team finished their season in the final round of the playoffs, losing to Nazareth College 8-9.

In terms of the history between these two programs, Utica College won the last matchup between the two teams back in March of 2019. The 11-7 win came at home for the Pioneers against the Lakers. However, the Oswego State squad holds the history in their hands with a record of 5-4-0 against Utica College and looks to gain their sixth win this afternoon.
