Oswego State women’s lacrosse drops to 0-2 to begin season

POTSDAM, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team fell to Clarkson 18-9 on Wednesday, bringing them to 0-2 on the new campaign. Despite a four goal performance from junior Sela Wiley, the Lakers weren’t able keep pace with the Golden Knights in a game that saw 27 total goals.

Clarkson got to scoring exceptionally fast to being the first quarter. After a penalty gave Clarkson a woman-up opportunity just nine seconds into the game, the Knights were able to capitalize 22 seconds later to go up 1-0. Following that, the Lakers were able to tie it up off a Madison Davis free position shot. Although Oswego scored once again, this time off a Julia Quirk position shot, Clarkson was able to net four more goals. With the Golden Knights leading 5-2 going into the second frame, they continued their dominant first half. Clarkson scored four goals through the first nine minutes, leaving Oswego in a 9-2 deficit. Sela Wiley, the Lakers leading scorer in 2021, begun her scoring spree at the 6:04 mark, finding the back of the on the team’s third free position goal. Though, Clarkson capped off a hot second quarter with three more goals which brought their halftime lead to 12-3.

The second half begun with Clarkson scoring their 13th goal of the contest, giving them a double-digit lead. From there on out, both teams traded goals with the Golden Knights winning the frame 4-3. Wiley netted two more Laker goals in that span with Quirk getting the other. Things slowed down in the final quarter and while the Lakers were able to outscore Clarkson, they weren’t able to over come the large deficit. Sophomores Shae McConnell and Isabella Lembo scored two of the Lakers final three goals, with Wiley netting the other. After a comeback attempt, Clarkson went on to win 18-9.

Despite Clarkson having more turnovers than Oswego, the Lakers weren’t able to match the Knights shot production. Oswego lost the shots-on-goal battle 28-14 and were outshot by 16. With this loss, the Lakers drop to 0-2 to begin the 2022 season. Searching for that coveted first win, Oswego will have an opportunity to capture it when they face Utica in their home opener Saturday. Face-off is set for 12:00 p.m. at Laker Turf Stadium

After the first round of matchups was completed the Cortland Red Dragons were set to come to Oswego Wednesday night to take on the Lakers. The Lakers knew exactly what to do to move on, and just 23 seconds into the game Alex DiCarlo fired a shot over the left shoulder of SUNYAC Goaltender of the Year and Co-Player of the Year Luca Durante to give the Lakers the early lead. Just nine minutes later Ryan Dickinson grabbed the puck in the neutral zone passed it up to Shane Bull. Oswego led in shots in the second period 16-7. The third period started with the Lakers third goal, Tommy Cahill took a pass in the slot and fired it through a screen just two minutes in. Durante had a few good saves throughout the final frame including a tough save on a wide open shot from Alex DiCarlo on a drop pass from Broughman. Cortland would pull Durante with four to play to try and fight back. With two left in the game, Cahill caused a turnover and passed it into the neutral zone for Shane Bull. Bull swung it up to Tyler Flack who buried it into the empty net and officially close the game for the Lakers. Connor Sleeth led the Lakers in shots on goal with eight. Cahill, Bull, and Dickinson all had two points in the game.

Oswego State men’s lacrosse falls to Hartwick in season opener

ONEONTA, N.Y.  — The Oswego State men’s lacrosse team kicked off the 2022 season on the road, falling to Hartwick College 9-6 on Tuesday. Although it was a tough way to begin the new campaign, Oswego saw great production from the team and had five total goal-scorers on the day.

The game started off relatively slow with Hartwick scoring the only first quarter goal just over five minutes in. However, the second quarter saw both the Lakers and Hawks heat up offensively. Hartwick a flurry of goals to begin the second frame, bringing their lead to 3-0 with 12:10 remaining in the first half. It wasn’t until the 8:08 mark where Oswego capitalized on a Hawks turnover and turned it into a Rob Nelson goal. Not even a minute later, Hartwick brought their lead back up to three on a fast break shot that found the back of the net. Later in the quarter, the Hawks were called for a slashing penalty which put the Lakers in a man-up situation that they cashed in on. Senior Weston Gray found Gavin Elston as he shot one past the Hartwick goalie, bring the score to 4-2. Although this provided a burst of momentum for Oswego, Hartwick remained relentless before the half. The Hawks snuck in another goal before the end of the second quarter and brought the lead to 5-2 heading into the intermission.

To begin the second half, Oswego was flagged for a cross-check, giving Hartwick an extra-man opportunity early in the third quarter. A sixth Hawks goal followed the penalty, giving the home team a four-point lead. After some back-and-forth play throughout the next ten minutes, Hartwick laid in another goal which brought the score to 7-2. Though before the third quarter ended, Ryan Dumont scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Weston Gray. Heading into the final quarter, Oswego needed a few scoring runs to keep pace with Hartwick. Devon Gerhardt got things started for the Lakers at the 11:45 mark as he found the net for his first goal on the year. Just four minutes later, Gavin Elston put in his second goal of the contest, bringing the deficit to two. However, that would be as close as the score got from there on out. Hartwick put in two more goals over the final seven minutes of regulation before Cameron Tallman scored the final Oswego goal with 30 seconds remaining.

Although the Lakers have now started the 2022 season off 0-1, Oswego saw great production offensive and defensively that they can build off of. Under new interim head coach Sean Eccles, the Lakers saw seven players record at least one point in the contest. Goalkeeper Aiden Kenyon also gathered in 15 saves in his first start for Oswego. The men’s lacrosse team will have the opportunity to rebound on Saturday, Mar. 5 as they take on SUNY Polytechnic. Face-off is set for 1:00 p.m. at Utica.

Oswego State women’s lacrosse falls to #7 William Smith in season opener

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team kicked off the 2022 season on Saturday, falling to #7 ranked William Smith 11-3.

Oswego started their new campaign off quickly as Madison Davis found the back of the net for the first Lakers goal of the season, giving them a 1-0 advantage early in the first quarter. Just two minutes later, the Herons responded with a goal of their own and knotted the game up at one apiece. With 17 seconds left in the opening stanza, the Lakers scored on a 8-meter shot, but the goal was taken away by the officials after they deemed the pocket of the stick to be illegal. After some back-and-forth play, Oswego broke the tie at the 10:33 mark of the second period. Sophomore Julia Quirk got on the board with her first goal of the season, assisted by Logan Castiglione. Four minutes later, William Smith completely flipped the momentum. The Herons scored at the 6:13 mark and again at :23 to take a 3-2 lead into halftime. William Smith started to take control in the third quarter as they took a two-goal lead at 10:59. Although Oswego made some personnel adjustments, the Herons would not let up as they scored two more unanswered goals to bring the lead to 6-2 with 4:58 left in the frame. Needing a quick response, junior midfielder and 2021 All-SUNYAC member, Sela Wiley, ripped one over to Madison David who scored her second goal of the contest. Oswego attempted to claw their way back into the game, but the fourth quarter belonged to the Herons. William Smith scored five unanswered goals in the final 15 minutes and won the game 11-3.

Oswego wasn’t able to keep pace offensively as they lost in the shots-on-goal department 27-10. The Lakers also committed 23 turnovers, some of which directly contributing to Heron goals. Notably however, in her first game as a Laker, starting goalkeeper Sarah Kamide gathered in 16 saves and finished with a .593 save percentage. Although it wasn’t the outcome Oswego wanted, they have plenty of opportunities to rebound with the first being against Clarkson on Wednesday, March 2nd. Face-off is set for 4:00 p.m. in Potsdam.

Oswego State baseball team returns to action against Salisbury

Tammaro_Batting_Brock

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego Baseball team made their return over the week on with three contests. They faced off in two games Saturday against the nationally ranked Salisbury. These two contests were wildly different in outcomes. Their first game of the season was a rough one, with oswego giving up fifteen runs in a 15-2 loss. The Lakers scored a run in the first inning when graduate student Kyle Lauria stole second, leading to senior Ryan Enos putting the Lakers on the board. It was all downhill from there as the Lakers were only able to score one more run in the third inning when Ryan Enos scored his second run of the day.

The second matchup ended with a much better outcome for the Lakers as they found a way to come out with the victory. It was another rocky start for the Lakers as they were down by two runs after the first three innings. The Lakers were not even close to finished as they had a score to settle with Salisbury. A double by senior Julian Drew gave the Lakers a golden opportunity to get on the board. After a pitch sailed past the catcher the Lakers were able to cut the lead down to one. Another score at the top od the sixth by senior Ryan Weiss tied the game up at two a piece. Weiss had a dominant performance in this game, and came in clutch in the top of the ninth inning. Weiss had a base hit that set up senior Ryan Enos for a crunch time run, giving the Lakers a 3-2 lead. Pitcher Ben Wilcox would seal Salisbury’s fate in the bottom of the ninth. The Lakers would have the rubber match Sunday afternoon.

The Lakers battled it out in a hard fought game Sunday, but ultimately came out on the losing end. Despite being right in it until the very end, they ultimately lost 6-5. Oswego was on the board first at the top of the third when sophomore Brian Brezosky scored after a single that got him to the plate. The fifth inning was action packed as the Lakers scored 3 runs to give them a 4-1 lead. Salisbury answered right back though, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Later in the top of the seventh, Kyle Lauria would score his second run of the day after capitalizing on a botched pitch. Unfortunately this would be the Lakers last run of the contest as Salisbury went on to score a run in the bottom of the seventh, eighth, and ninth inning to seal their one run victory. Oswego walked out with one win this weekend but showed signs of greatness after going against top ranked Salisbury. The Lakers take a trip to Virginia to face Shenandoah University this Saturday and Sunday. Time is TBD.

After a back-and-forth third quarter, Brockport brought the deficit to seven entering the final ten minutes. The Golden Eagles continued to fight down the stretch and pulled the game within two points with just over a minute remaining in regulation. Castiglione, who was great defensively in this game, came up with a clutch steal to maintain the Oswego lead with 30 seconds remaining. After some scrappy play, an Oswego foul put Brockport on the free throw line down just one point. The Golden Eagles nailed both free throws to take their first lead since the opening quarter. The Lakers got a last-second shot off in time, but it would fall short, giving Brockport the victory. Shania Iglesias finished the contest with 16 points while Caivana (15) and Castiglione (10) both scored double-digit points.

Before the tip-off of Saturday’s senior night game, Oswego celebrated Caivana and Encarnacion for their accomplishments with the team. Both teams exchanged a flurry of baskets throughout the first quarter, with Fredonia up 18-16 heading into the second. The Lakers quickly took their first lead of the game off a Diamond Pickett three-point shot. Encarnacion and Caivana combined for 25 points in their final game as Lakers. With this win, the Blue Devils clinched the sixth and final playoff berth in the SUNYAC Championship.

Although it wasn’t the outcome the team was hoping for, the Lakers have a bright future lead by their young star athletes. Oswego saw major contributions from the likes of Catie Lilly, Chastin Giles, and Diamond Pickett throughout the course of the season and will look to build upon their performances from this season. The team will reload in the offseason and look towards the 2022-23 season, where they hope to make it back to the SUNYAC playoffs once again.

POTSDAM N.Y. — The Oswego women’s hockey team is in the midst of a fight for playoff seeding in the NEWHL. Coming into Tuesday night’s matchup in Potsdam they had three games remaining. The game against the Bears was a big one, the Lakers have already clinched a spot in the playoffs, but Potsdam still fighting for that final seed.

The Lakers took the first period. The lone goal of the period coming on the power play. Morgan Shines passed the puck up to the offensive blue line. Unfortunately, quickly after the end of the second power play the Bears tied the game. Potsdam won possession at their offensive blue line setting up a two-on-two, and forward Kaylee Merrill threatened a pass but took it herself and scored a goal that was assisted by former Laker Megan Teachout. With the win, the Lakers have now won six straight and have a record of 14-0-7-1 (11-0-4-1 NEWHL). They are currently tied with Cortland in the standings, but sit a seed below due to the tiebreaker being head-to-head with the one seed, in this case Plattsburgh. The Lakers have two games left in the season and need to win out and need Cortland to lose one of their final two, both against SUNY Canton. The first of the Lakers final two games is Friday February, 18 in Morrisville against the Mustangs. After a back-and-forth first quarter, New Paltz built a 19-8 lead by the opening minute of the second quarter. Men’s basketball takes first SUNYAC loss

ONEONTA N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s basketball team is one of the hottest teams in the country. Coming into the weekend they were undefeated in conference play, had only one loss on the season, and had won seventeen straight games. Oswego was set to go on the road to take on the New Platz Hawks and the Oneonta Red Dragons. They had taken on these two teams and blown them both out at home two weekends prior, they were hoping to do the same this weekend.

Their first stop of the weekend was New Paltz. When the teams played two weekends ago it was a one vs two matchup in the SUNYAC where the Lakers would come out on top, the Hawks wanted revenge for their loss. The game was close through most of the first half, the Lakers held a 13-10 lead after six minutes, were down 21-20 after eleven minutes, and finally grabbed a sustained lead around the seven minute mark, 25-21, on a Brendon Mulson three. A three from Ahkee Anderson with five to go would give the Lakers a 30-23 lead, but New Paltz would use the last five minutes to go on a 14-5 run and the half would end with New Paltz up 37-35. The teams traded baskets for most of the second half, a Jeremiah Sparks three with twelve to go gave the Lakers a six point lead, the largest lead for either team in the half. A Sparks dunk with four minutes left gave the Lakers a four point lead, and then the Hawks would score the next six points to give them a 62-60 lead. Devin Green would go to the line and make the first but miss the second, a rebound on the miss by Brendon Mulson led to a Sparks layup to give the Lakers a one point lead. With fifteen seconds left New Paltz hit a layup to go up one and then got a steal to hand Oswego their first loss since November 23, 64-63. Jeremiah Spark led the Lakers with fifteen points, with Ahkee Anderson contributing twelve and Jamal Achille ten.

Game two of the road trip came against Red Dragons of Oneonta on Saturday. The Lakers looked to make up for the loss the night before and move on. Devin Green was the leader for the Lakers from the tip. He scored the ten of Oswego’s first twenty points on way to a 20-10 lead after eight minutes. The game was back and forth the remaining twelve minutes with Jeremiah Sparks hitting the final shot of the half for either team around the two minute mark. The teams would head to the locker rooms with Oswego leading 31-23. Oswego grew their lead to eleven four minutes into the second half on a Kaleb Cook three. With just under seven minutes left they grew the lead to fourteen, 56-42. Oneonta would go on a 9-0 run to close the gap to five before five straight points from Brendon Mulson would seal the game. Oswego State men’s hockey blanks Morrisville to earn fourth shutout of season

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team defeated Morrisville State 4-0 on Wednesday. This victory marks the 11th SUNYAC win for the Lakers and second win over the Mustangs in the 2021-22 season.

It was a back-and-fourth, scrappy first period that saw neither team find the back of the net. However, Oswego’s defense was stifling from the opening puck drop as they held Morrisville to just three shots in the first stanza compared to the Lakers 15. The Lakers remained relentless on the offensive end to start the second period, firing off 10 shots in the frame’s first nine minutes. Though, it wasn’t until the 13:17 mark where sophomore Connor Sleeth got things rolling for Oswego, scoring his sixth goal on the year. Ryan Bunka and Alex DiCarlo were awarded assists on the play. Just four minutes later, captain Travis Broughman put the Lakers up 2-0 as he tallied his eleventh goal of the year. To finish the period, Oswego went on to score another goal with Alex DiCarlo “one-upping” Broughman for his twelfth goal of the season. The team captain would not be upstaged for long however. As the Lakers took command in the final period, Broughman tacked on his second goal of the game, tying DiCarlo at 12 for the team lead. The Oswego defense, lead by senior Steven Kozikoski, played phenomenal all game long. The “Wizard of Koz” raked in 13 saves en route of earning his fourth shutout of the season. The team as a whole dominated the stat sheet, totaling 51 shots, 35 shots on goal and winning 36 faceoffs.

With this win, the Lakers improve to 16-5-1 on the season and currently sit atop the SUNYAC standings with 34 points. With just two regular season games remaining before SUNYAC playoffs begin on Feb. 23, Oswego will look to continue this momentum and finish the season strong. The men’s hockey team concludes the season with a weekend doubleheader against Fredonia on Feb. 18 and Buffalo State on Feb. 19. Puck-drop is set for Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Fredonia.

OSWEGO N.Y. — A good ole fashion blowout. That’s what this game could be named. Oswego State women’s hockey shuts out SUNY Canton in consecutive games

Saturday’s game was on the road where the Lakers took command early on. After putting up seven shots-on-goal to start the game, freshman Lizzie Burke got Oswego on the board at the 8:29 mark of the opening stanza. Just six minutes later, the Canton received a powerplay opportunity following a Laker tripping penalty. However, Oswego scored a short-handed goal with 28 seconds left in the first period. Captain Philomena Teggart and junior Ariella Haas assisted Simone Bednarik on the score. Early on into the second period, Morgan Shines put the Lakers up 3-0 off an assist by Kyleigh Grugin and Avery Webster. Oswego continued their dominant offensive performance as they found the net once again just 46 seconds later, this time being a goal from Taylor Hudon. After some back-and-forth runs by each team in the final period, the Lakers scored their fifth and final goal of the night courtesy of Ashlyn McGrath. Oswego out-shot Canton 33-14 in Saturday’s contest with sophomore goalkeeper Joanna Hiebert going perfect on the night, saving all 14 Kangaroo shots.

The Lakers and Kangaroos met once again just one day later, this time being in the Deborah F. Stanley arena. Much like their previous matchup, Oswego started Sunday’s game off hot from the opening puck-drop. Junior Emily Gustafson netted her first goal of the season just 5:50 into the first period to put the Lakers up by one. Towards the end of the first frame, freshman Mack Hull made it a 2-0 game when she found the back of the net. Both teams went scoreless throughout much of the second period until Sophia Kyrkostas netted a powerplay goal with three minutes remaining. Joanna Hiebert was outstanding in goal once again, racking up 18 saves and recording her fourth shutout of the season.

After an impressive weekend which saw junior Morgan Shines win the Oswego State athlete of the week honor, the women’s hockey team is now tied for 2nd place in the NEWHL with SUNY Cortland. Oswego will look to carry this momentum into Tuesday’s match against Buffalo State before competing in a rubber-match verses SUNY Canton on Friday. Oswego State men’s hockey splits weekend

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s hockey team split this past weekend in SUNYAC conference play after competing against SUNY Brockport and SUNY Geneseo. The Lakers were able to get the job done on Friday with a win on home ice against the Brockport Golden Eagles. On Saturday, Oswego State traveled to Geneseo and fell after trying to complete the comeback in the third period.

Friday evening, Oswego State welcomed the Golden Eagles of SUNY Brockport into the Marano Campus Center for Senior Night and Pride Night. The Lakers would get the job done against Brockport posting a victory by a score of 7-3 in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. Oswego State got out to an early lead in the first period with a quick goal from forward Alex DiCarlo. The Golden Eagles would respond with their own two goals to take the lead. Tyler Flack would answer for the Lakers and tie the game with an assist going to sophomore Shane Bull. Goals from Mac Lewis and Tommy Cahill finished the scoring for the Lakers in the first period. The Golden Eagles would net one more before heading into the locker room to round out the first stanza.

Over the course of the next forty minutes, the Golden Eagles would not be able to find the back of the net after a solid performance from the Oswego State defense. Cahill and Flack found the back of the net one more time prior to the end of the contest and defenseman Troy Robillard also found the twine before the completion of the game. In between the pipes for Oswego State, netminder Steven Kozikoski received the win after making a total of 24 saves and only allowing three goals against.

On Saturday, Oswego State loaded up the bus and headed down Interstate 90 to SUNY Geneseo’s campus to play against the number two team in the nation per the USCHO poll. The Lakers would fall in the contest by a score of 4-2 but played a better game against the Ice Knights compared to the contest against Geneseo back in November. Geneseo would score four unanswered goals in the first and second periods to take a commanding lead on home ice. Rocco Andreacchi found the back of the net first for Oswego State and Cahill had another goal on the weekend in the third period. Kozikoski made a total of 34 saves in the lost.

Although the Lakers split the weekend against the Rochester teams, Oswego State moved up in this week’s USCHO poll. In terms of the Pairwise rankings, the Lakers are in tenth and have a good shot at an at-large bid if necessary. In the conference standings, the Lakers are tied with Geneseo for the top spot but Geneseo has a game at hand. Oswego State has three more games left in the regular season before the SUNYAC Championship starts. This Wednesday, Oswego State will travel to Morrisville State to take on the Mustangs for a weekday SUNYAC matchup. Morrisville is currently last in the conference with a total of six points. A Friday night matchup against the Potsdam Bear and a Saturday afternoon bout against the Plattsburgh Cardinals became just two more games during one of the dominant stretches in program history.

Potsdam kept it close through the beginning of the first first half. The Lakers held a 9-8 lead after five minutes, and a 26-22 lead with eight and half to go. Then the Lakers found their stride. Oswego went on a 24-3 run to end the half lead by eight from Ahkee Anderson. The Lakers went to the locker rooms up 50-25. The second half was all Lakers. The Lakers pushed the lead to twenty-four with six minutes left in the half, 34-10, with ten points from Jeremiah Sparks. Julien Crittendon hit two three later in the half, and the Lakers reached the fifty point mark before half time, and went to the locker rooms up 52-23. The Lakers would also have a fifty point second half, and for the third time this season would have over 100 points, winning 103-61. Oswego women’s basketball suffers two losses despite impressive performances

OSWEGO N.Y. — It was a rough weekend for the Oswego State women’s basketball team as they were unable to find success in their two games played. The Lakers took on Potsdam in a SUNYAC matchup Friday night as they were looking to get back in the win column. The Lakers started off strong taking the early lead after the first quarter. Senior Danielle Caivana was on fire the whole game, dropping twenty-one points, nine from the three point line. She was pure money as she did everything she could to help her team and try to come out with the win. After the first quarter things got a little rocky for the Lakers as they lost their lead and couldn’t bounce back to come out with the win. Potsdam was firing on all cylinders despite the Lakers putting up a fight. Oswego State looked to put this fourteen point loss behind them as they hosted SUNY Plattsburgh in an important matchup the following day.

The Lakers had another SUNYAC matchup Saturday night against Plattsburgh. This game was a fight to the finish with both teams fighting desperately to come out on top. The Lakers were up by one at the end of the first. With a combination of lockdown defense and a good offensive performance, the Lakers were here to win. Yet again, Danielle Caivana had a stellar performance dropping a whopping twenty-two points this game to out do her performance from Friday. Caivana has had an incredible senior year and continues to prove how she is a crucial part of Oswego’s offense. Additionally, freshman Shania Iglesias had a great performance with nine points. At the end of the half Plattsburgh was able to take the lead, going up by four. The Lakers were not out of this game as they outscored Plattsburgh in the third, making it a three point game. Despite a valiant effort to come out with the victory, the Lakers ultimately came out on the losing end. The final score was sixty to fifty three. The Lakers go on the road to take on Buffalo State Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.!

Oswego State men’s hockey extends win streak to six games following weekend doubleheader

Oswego, N.Y.  — The Oswego State men’s hockey team improved to 14-4-1 this past weekend, defeating SUNY Cortland 5-3 on Friday and Fredonia 3-2 on Saturday. With these pair of victories, the Lakers have extended their win streak to six games and are nationally ranked for the first time this season, being named the #13 team in the most recent USCHO poll.

On Friday, the Lakers faced a familiar foe in the Cortland Red Dragons. Following an Oswego powerplay early in the first period, the Red Dragons scored their first goal to take the lead. Soon after, captain Travis Broughman scored his first goal of the evening to tie things up at one apiece. After some back-and-forth action between both teams to begin the second period, Cortland broke the tie once again at the 15:22 mark. It wouldn’t take long for the Lakers to tie things up as just two minutes later, Tommy Cahill found the back of the net, bringing the score to 2-2. Oswego would take their first lead of the evening with 10:22 left in the second period. Garrett Clegg found the twine off an assist by Mac Lewis, his second assist of the game. Though, Cortland would knot things up again just four minutes later. With the game tied 3-3 heading into the final period, the Lakers needed someone to step up to break the stalemate. Broughman, as he has done throughout much of his career at Oswego, was the guy to break things open. With 12:44 left in regulation, the team captain scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal, assisted by Alex DiCarlo and Quinn Warmuth. The Lakers defense was impenetrable through the final stretch. The Red Dragons pulled their goalie with 46 second left on the clock and with an empty net, Broughman was able to secure the hat trick, notching in his third goal of the contest.

On Saturday, the Lakers started the game off hot from the opening puck drop, scoring just 30 seconds into the first period off an Alex DiCarlo goal. Although each team continued to fire shots on net, the score remained 1-0 throughout the rest of the period. After some back-and-forth attempts in the second period, sophomore Tyler Flack opened things up for the Lakers at the 13:26 mark, using a screen to beat the Fredonia goalie for his fourth goal of the season. With seven minutes left in the period, captain Travis Broughman intercepted a Blue Devil turnover and found the back of the net to bring the score to 3-0. However, the Blue Devils responded with a goal of their own less than a minute later, using a two-on-one to beat Steven Kozikoski. To end the period, Oswego took a five-minute major for contact to the head of a Fredonia player.

The Lakers, like they’ve done all night, were able to kill the penalty efficiently. Fredonia was held to 0-3 on power plays. With 9:45 remaining in the third period, the Blue Devils scored off a clear that snuck past a Laker defenseman, bringing the deficit to just one goal. Though, a mighty defensive performance by the Lakers would hold Fredonia scoreless through the rest of regulation. With less than a minute left in the period, Oswego had a chance to score a fourth goal. However, an incredible sliding block by the Fredonia defenseman kept the game 3-2.

Travis Broughman lead the team in points with two (1 goal, 1 assist), while Steven Kozikoski continued his hot-streak as he totaled 24 saves. The Oswego State men’s hockey team will look to carry this momentum into their Senior Night and Pride Night game against SUNY Brockport. Puck drop is set for Friday at 7:00 p.m. in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. Coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. on WTOP 10!

Oswego State scored first in the contest with a goal in the first period to take the lead. Lizzie Burke got the lone period goal with an assist from Morgan Shines. The Lakers and Mustangs would go scoreless in the second period to keep the game a one goal game heading into the final stanza. Just thirty-nine seconds into the third period, Morrisville State tied the game to make for an exciting finish. Simone Bednarik was able to capitalize on the man advantage after burying a goal after a pass from defenseman Chyne Kennedy. With 1:32 left in the game, Oswego pulled goalie Bryn White in order to take a few last-minute shots. They were able to rattle off six shots, but came up just short at the final buzzer.

Oswego dominated in many areas of the game including total shots, shots-on-goal and faceoffs, but weren’t able to capitalize on their power-play opportunities. Although the Lakers dropped their final non-conference game of the 2021-22 season, they still remain fourth place in the NEWHL standings. They’ll have the opportunity to rebound from this loss against Morrisville State College on Friday, Jan. 28, before a three-game series versus SUNY Canton the following week. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Deborah F. Stanley Arena.
